Megan Thee Stallion protests Texas abortion law at Austin City Limits

Megan Thee Stallion protested Texas’ new abortion law during her set at the Austin City Limits festival this weekend.

The new legislation, Senate Bill 8, bans most abortions in Texas and makes the state the most restrictive in the United States in terms of access to abortion services.

The restrictive laws prohibit abortions to take place once cardiac activity can be detected in the foetus. This timeframe is typically around six weeks, before most people know they are pregnant. There are no exceptions for cases involving rape or incest, and private citizens have the right to take legal action against anyone involved in assisting an abortion to take place.

During her set on Saturday (October 8), Megan told the crowd (via Billboard): “This middle finger is also to these motherfucking men that want to tell us what the fuck to do with our body.

“‘Cause how the fuck you gonna tell me what to do with my motherfucking body? Drop that shit.”

Following the set, she wrote on Instagram: “Y’all know I’m a Texas girl and we deserve better! Politicians want to cut off abortion access and control our bodies, lives, and futures — I’m speaking up.”

YungbludMaggie RogersSt. Vincent and Lucy Dacus all spoke against the laws when they came into effect the first week of September. Dacus, along with Jack Antonoff, also pledged proceeds from their respective shows in Texas to charities that support abortions.

On October 1, Phoebe Bridgers officially released a version of Bo Burnham’s ‘That Funny Feeling’ on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to a range of abortion funds in Texas.

Billie Eilish also took the opportunity to share her opposition to the law during her Austin City Limits headline set.

At one point during the show, Eilish admitted: “When they made that shit a law, I almost didn’t want to do the show because I wanted to punish this fucking place for allowing that to happen here.”

Elsewhere, Austin City Limits have apologised to Phoebe Bridgers for cutting her sound off before the end of her festival set last weekend.

Bridgers’ sound was cut in the lead-up to the climax of her ‘Punisher’ closing track ‘I Know The End’. Footage shows Bridgers continuing to play to the end of the track despite the interruption. Shortly after her set ended, she tweeted “lol fuck acl”.

THE BOYZ reportedly to release new music in November

THE BOYZ are reportedly slated to release new music this November.

READ MORE: THE BOYZ on ‘Thrill-ing’: “We’re in that spot where we can be more confident and try new things”

This is according to a October 12 report by South Korean news site JoyNews24, which claims that the boyband are currently filming a new music video in Seoul. The publication also noted that the group’s new project will be released in November.

However, the group’s agency Cre.Ker Entertainment has yet to confirm the report as of writing.

If true, THE BOYZ’s upcoming project will come just three months after the release of their sixth mini-album ‘Thrill-ing’. That release had marked the group’s first domestic release in approximately 11 months, since their fifth mini-album ‘Chase’ in September last year, which featured the title track ‘The Stealer’.

In a four-star review, NME’s Carmen Chin described ‘Thrill-ing’ as “a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions that not only pays tribute to their earlier sounds of fresh-faced wonder, but also takes unexpected twists in an ambitious showcase of versatility and experimentation.”

The group had also opened up about their mini album in an exclusive interview with NME. “There’s so many emotions that we associate with it and that we feel while going to one, it’s an emotional rollercoaster,” says Kevin.

“We had our share of bright and bubbly [concepts] and we had our share of dark and conceptual. I think this album is very bright, but at the same time very witty and tongue-in-cheek.”

Aside from a new EP, THE BOYZ also released the single ‘Kingdom Come’ earlier this year. The track, released as part of their appearance on Kingdom: Legendary War, has since become their first to top the real-time chart of South Korean streaming service Genie.

Watch Gene Simmons avoid fall after descending platform malfunctions during KISS gig

KISS‘ Gene Simmons managed to avoid a fall after a descending platform malfunctioned at the start of the band’s show in Tampa, Florida last weekend.

As Simmons, Paul Stanley and Tommy Thayer began dropping to the stage on individual platforms for opener ‘Detroit Rock City’, Simmons’ failed to lower all the way to the ground and became unbalanced, tilting and shaking.

Simmons was luckily unhurt and managed to hold his balance throughout the ordeal, holding onto a cable as the platform eventually lowered to the ground, allowing him to escape onto the stage.

See fan-shot footage of the moment below:

Simmons acknowledged the moment on Twitter yesterday (October 11), sharing a photograph of himself atop the wobbling stage prop.

“We are committed to you and to putting on the greatest on Earth…even though it’s not always as safe as we want it to be,” he wrote. “This happened 2 shows ago.”

— Gene Simmons (@genesimmons) October 11, 2021

Last month, KISS were forced to postpone a handful of tour dates after Simmons tested positive for COVID-19, just days after Stanley also tested positive for the virus. In August, Simmons said he was in favour of vaccine mandates at shows.

Last week, Stanley revealed when their ‘End of the Road’ world tour would wrap up, saying he believes that the run of dates will be completed by the beginning of 2023, ending the tour in New York.

Stanley also said that the jaunt would definitely be the band’s last tour, citing the “incredibly demanding” physical nature of the band’s shows.

“Look, we played [recently] in Austin, an outdoor show, 100 percent humidity. We’re running around for two-plus hours, not only with guitars, but I’ve got 30-plus pounds of gear on,” Stanley said.

“There’s a point where you go, ‘You know what? This is more challenge than I want.’ And I only want to do it as long as I can do it smiling.

“There’s really no thought about changing our minds. It has nothing to do with personalities in the band or tensions or a difference of opinion or musicality. It’s purely practical. You can play beat the clock, but ultimately the clock wins.”

Two-thirds of music fans in favour of vaccine or mask mandates at concerts

Two-thirds of music fans are in favour of mandates for vaccination or mask wearing at concerts, a new study has found.

The report from MusicWatch revealed that 67% of gig-going fans surveyed believe that venues should be employing mandates for the wearing of masks and proof of vaccination against COVID.

70% of those surveyed said they were already double vaccinated, with the number going up to 80% for those who have attended a concert since 2019.

29% of unvaccinated fans that were surveyed said they would not attend a venue where vaccine requirements were in place, while just 27% of them believe that implementing such plans is a good idea. 20% of the fans MusicWatch surveyed said they were unvaccinated.

Of the 753 fans surveyed for the report, only 6% said that they would not attend a particular venue because of its COVID mandates, while only 15% agreed that fans should be able to use “common sense” with regards to vaccination and mask wearing at gigs.

This week, it was revealed that nearly 90,000 jobs have been lost in the UK’s nightlife sector due to COVID as part of a new report from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA).

CEO of the NTIA Michael Kill said that the data, which shows 86,000 job losses in the night time cultural economy sector since 2019, proves that “it is the worst possible time to introduce vaccine passports, which will further damage a sector essential to the economic recovery”.

Earlier this month (October 1) vaccine passports became mandatory in Scotland after a judge refused to delay the implementation of the scheme.

It came after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that the Scottish government would be delaying its plans for the implementation of the passports as a requirement for entry into the country’s nightclubs, after criticism from many establishments across the country.

In England, meanwhile, the plan for vaccine passports for nightclubs, sporting events and large live music events was scrapped last month.

Nicki Minaj says Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock is “jealous” of ex-member Jesy Nelson

Nicki Minaj has weighed in on the debate around Jesy Nelson and Blackfishing, going as far to call Nelson’s ex-Little Mix bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock “a big jealous bozo”.

In an Instagram Live between Minaj and Nelson yesterday (October 11), the rapper referenced messages allegedly shared between Pinnock and Instagram user @nohun_ that were posted on social media.

In a screenshot, posted by @nohun_ and seen by NME, Pinnock appears to have suggested that the influencer make a video about Nelson’s “black fishing” as opposed to a dance to her debut solo single ‘Boyz’, which features Minaj.

Pinnock then claims that Nelson blocked her and her Little Mix bandmates, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall, and cut them off, before saying that she’s a “horrible person.”

Towards the end of the hour-long livestream, Minaj criticised the exchange, saying “Take them text messages and shove it up your fucking ass, because when you do clown shit I got to treat you and talk to you like you a clown.

“If you was in this woman’s group and you ain’t talk about this shit for 10 years,” Minaj continued, “and as soon as you see she got a video coming out with Nicki Minaj and Puffy, now you sending text messages and all this shit…print those text messages out, bust your ass open and shove them up your motherfucking ass.”

“Stop trying to hurt people and kill people’s lives and careers, this is the way people feed their families. Stop – if you want a solo career, baby girl, just say that.”

“Only jealous people do things like this,” Minaj continued. “It makes you a big jealous bozo. I love you guys but please don’t do this. Let these people be miserable all by themselves.”

Nelson, who sat quietly and occasionally laughed during Minaj’s criticisms, went on to say that a member of the band – presumably Pinnock – addressed Blackfishing with her on set of the final music video she filmed with Little Mix before leaving back in December, ‘Sweet Melody’.

“It’s just hard for me because I was in a group with two women of colour for nine years,” Nelson said, “and it was never brought up to me up until the last music video when she messaged me and said ‘Jesy, I just want to make you aware’…”

Minaj then posted more videos on Instagram, asking why Pinnock didn’t make these comments around Nelson when Minaj collaborated with Little Mix on 2018’s ‘Woman Like Me’.

“To shorty in the group, why you wasn’t mad when I worked with y’all before?” she said.

“Why you wasn’t mad that I didn’t call out Jesy before when I was working with y’all as a group? Why wasn’t there an uproar in the UK and the US before I met her? Jesy has been selling millions and millions of records for the last decade.”

Finally, Minaj took to Twitter to condemn Pinnock further, calling her ‘JeLeigh’ and referenced Nelson’s past struggles with mental health due to bullying.

“JeLeigh btchs actin real messy,” Minaj wrote.

“If you know someone has been suicidal from bullying in the past, why try to get a bunch of ppl to bully them again about smthng else, on an even bigger scale? Shame on you— that’s rlly sad. You don’t know what ppl can deal with.”

— Nicki Minaj (@NICKIMINAJ) October 12, 2021

Pinnock has yet to publicly respond to either Minaj or Nelson’s comments.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Nelson addressed the Blackfishing claims, saying, “The whole time I was in Little Mix I never got any of that. And then I came out of [the band] and people all of a sudden were saying it.

“I wasn’t on social media around that time, so I let my team [deal with it], because that was when I’d just left.”

She later gave a statement, saying, “I take all those comments made seriously. I would never intentionally do anything to make myself look racially ambiguous, so that’s why I was initially shocked that the term was directed at me.”

Nelson signed a solo record deal with Polydor back in May, while Little Mix are set to release their first album as a trio, greatest hits collection ‘Between Us’, in November as a celebration of their 10 year anniversary.

This isn’t the first time Evans has showcased his piano skills on social media, after he left fans “weak” back in November of last year with footage of him performing one of his “favourites” by Italian composer Fabrizio Paterlini.

Social media recently buzzed with fans’ wishful casting of Evans and Lizzo in the upcoming remake of The Bodyguard, which originally starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. This came after a playful exchange between Evans and Lizzo that began when the pop singer sent the Captain America star a drunk DM.

In August, it was revealed that Evans will reunite with Avengers co-star Scarlett Johansson for the new film Ghosted, a romantic action-adventure film directed by Dexter Fletcher, who is known for his work on Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Cardi B defends Paris Fashion Week trip after citing travel safety concerns for pushing back trial date

Cardi B has defended a recent trip to Paris Fashion Week after she cited concerns around travel safety in order to get a scheduled October court date pushed to next year.

The rapper was sued late last year by Kevin Brophy Jr, who alleged Cardi used his distinctive back tattoo on the cover of her 2016 debut mixtape ‘Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1’ without his permission.

Last month, Cardi made a declaration to a court saying she needed to avoid risky travel, and as a result, successfully had her trial (which would require her to travel to Southern California) postponed to February 2022.

Last week, Brophy slammed the rapper for flying to Paris for a week between September 26 and October 4, calling for sanctions be placed against Cardi and the trial moved to December. A judge has not yet ruled on Brophy’s request.

As Rolling Stone reports, Cardi has hit back in a statement to a federal judge, arguing the “important” and “brief” work opportunity in Paris is not comparable to the nearly month-long stay in California that would be required for the trial. Part of her argument centres around the birth of her second child with husband Offset back early last month.

“This was the only trip I have taken since the birth of our son on September 4, 2021. I was of course very concerned with, and made thorough arrangements for, the well-being and care of our children in our absence,” Cardi – real name Belcalis Almánzar – writes.

“During our absence, our three-year-old daughter and our newborn son stayed with my mother and a baby nurse for our son, in New York. Both children were and remain in perfect health.”

Cardi goes on to say that representing famous designers’ work during her Fashion Week appearance offered a “rare” and “important” opportunity for her career, at a point when she is readying her second studio album, and has been largely unable to perform in recent years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“That opportunity was so important and compelling to my career that I could not reasonably turn it down, provided of course that we were able to make adequate provision for the care of our children for the few days my husband and I would be gone.”

According to Rolling Stone, Cardi also argued that the Paris trip was done in coordination with a doctor, and involved multiple COVID-19 precautions to ensure the safety of her family. She added a driver remained on standby in New York for any needs that might have related to her children during that time, and that she talked to her children multiple times a day over FaceTime.

In contrast, an October trial date would have required Cardi and her family to stay in Southern California for at least three weeks.

“The children would have had to be looked after here in California, away from me for extended periods while I would be gone for trial preparation meetings, traveling to and from court, and in the courtroom all day every day during the trial,” Cardi wrote.

“I was also concerned I would be distracted and exhausted prior to and during the trial, not only from the travel and trying to juggle family needs and trial at the same time, but from lack of sleep due to my newborn’s schedule and demands.”

Cardi also rejected Brophy’s claim that her declaration on September 10 around travel safety concerns was misleading, saying that the opportunity to go to Paris didn’t arise until almost a fortnight later when the brand Mugler reiterated an invitation to represent it. She went on to attend Balenciaga and Messika events.

“My declaration of September 10th, 2021, was entirely truthful,” Cardi said. “I concealed nothing.”

Brophy filed a lawsuit against Cardi in December of last year regarding the rapper’s ‘Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1’ artwork, which features a male model with Brophy’s back tattoo superimposed, ostensibly performing oral sex on Cardi.

At the time, he alleged that that the rapper had photoshopped his tattoo onto someone else’s body and used it without his permission, which ultimately appropriated his likeness in “a misleading, offensive, humiliating and provocatively sexual way”.

Cardi argued at the time that the cover image constituted transformative fair use of Brophy’s likeness. However, the judge in the trial believed the changes made to the tattoo on the cover were insufficiently creative, and the claim was not accepted as a basis for handing the rapper a win in the lawsuit at the pre-trial stage.

“Most significantly, defining elements including the tiger and snake remain virtually unchanged,” US District Court Judge Cormac Carney said at the time. “Under these circumstances, a jury will have to decide the merits of Defendants’ defense.”

Rolling Stone notes that Brophy and Cardi are set to appear for a settlement conference on December 1 in an attempt to avoid the suit going to trial.
