Brian Eno calls for “a revolution” in music industry’s approach to climate change

Brian Eno has spoken about Coldplay and The 1975‘s efforts to tackle climate change, while calling for “a revolution” in the wider music industry’s approach.

READ MORE: Savages’ drummer and Music Declares Emergency co-founder Fay Milton on climate change: “Music needs to get real”

The renowned musician/producer appeared as a guest on the second season of Fay Milton’s Sounds Like A Plan podcast, which focuses on how the music community is confronting the climate crisis. It’s hosted by the Savages drummer and activist alongside journalist Greg Cochrane.

Eno spoke of this year launching Earth Percent, “a charity providing a simple way for the music industry to support the most impactful organisations addressing the climate emergency”.

“We’ve got quite a few people on board already,” Eno explained, “either actually on board or with a commitment to join us. We’re not talking only to artists; we’re talking to agents, promoters, managers, record companies, publishing companies, legal and so on.”

He continued: “We’re saying to all of them, ‘We’re all part of this business together, and you’re as an important part of it as anyone else. Why don’t you join us?’

“We’re trying to make it the cause of the music business, really, to say, ‘Let’s have a revolution’,” Eno said, adding that he hopes the model would then spread to other industries.

Asked about Coldplay’s efforts to reduce their carbon footprint (the band vowed to look at more “environmentally beneficial” ways of touring in 2019), Eno replied: “Well, there are other people doing it. The 1975 are working on this as well and U2 also have a sort of climate change department where they’re trying to discuss the same kinds of things. And I’m sure lots of other people that I don’t know about [are].”

He added: “But the important thing about that is that you create a new sort of question that people have to answer, which is, ‘Am I gonna engage with this or not?’ And it becomes harder and harder to say ‘not’ if more and more people are engaging with it.”

Later, Eno suggested that the climate crisis should be reframed as a “climate opportunity”. “I think the opportunity side needs to be stressed a little bit,” he said. “Y’know, all you revolutionaries who want to make a new world: here is your chance. This is why you have to do it.”

You can listen to the podcast in full above.

Sounds Like A Plan
was launched in March of this year, and guests during its first season included Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien, The 1975’s manager Jamie Oborne and Heidi Leffner, of FEAT (Future Energy Artists) and formerly of Cloud Control.

Appearing under the banner of ‘William Patrick Corgan Early Years 1985-1990’, the singer then treated those in attendance to a string of early Pumpkins material, playing ‘Pain’, ‘The Vigil’, ‘There It Goes’, ‘With You’ and more.

You can see a selection of fan-shot videos from the show below, with the full set available to watch here.

Of the artists Lil Nas X named, Azealia Banks responded via her own Instagram story, writing, “Let’s get ’em”.

Lil Nas X’s wish list comes after he revealed last month that he wanted Lady Gaga on his recent album, ‘Montero’, and Nicki Minaj on the song ‘Industry Baby’.

In a Twitter Q&A, he fielded questions from fans who used the hashtag #askMONTERO.

One user asked if he would ever collaborate with Lady Gaga, to which Lil Nas X responded: “Yes i actually wanted a song with her on the album but i never finished writing to it & sending it to her.”

Another user asked about the song Lil Nas X had sent to Nicki Minaj in hopes of a feature, which he’d revealed he’d done in an interview with The Breakfast Club, to no response.

The song was the single ‘Industry Baby’, Lil Nas X said, which ultimately got a guest verse from Jack Harlow.

Meanwhile, Dolly Parton has given her stamp of approval to Lil Nas X‘s recent cover of her signature song ‘Jolene’.

The rapper performed his rendition of Parton’s 1973 song, lifted from her album of the same name, during a session as part of BBC Radio One’s Live Lounge last month.

Taking to Twitter ahead of his sold-out show at Newcastle’s O2 Academy tonight (October 12), Yungblud posted a video in which he told fans: “It was really important to me that there would be gender-neutral facilities on this tour.”

He went on to address the difficulties faced by non-binary people at gigs, adding: “So that’s happening.”

The Big Moon announce UK headline tour for 2022

The Big Moon have announced a UK headline tour set to take place in 2022 – check out all the details below.

The NME Big Read: The Big Moon: “Everything feels big, strange, and very scary”

The London band will hit the road next May in support of their second album ‘Walking Like We Do’, which was released in January 2020. Tickets are available here.

Sharing the news on social media earlier today (October 12), the group reflected on the lack of live dates since their latest record’s release, owing to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. “Gahhhh it’s finally happeniiiing!” they wrote. “The Big Moon Big Tour coming to a city near you in 2022!”

They continued: “2020 was set to be a big year for us and this tour in particular is something we’ve been working towards our whole careers so we are thrilled to be able to keep all the original cities and announce these new and (hopefully fingers crossed pray to any and all goddesses) final official dates.”

The Big Moon also thanked fans for their patience, adding: “We love you and we can’t WAIT to see you and put on an incredible show for you. And to everyone who hasn’t yet – NOW IS THE TIME!! It’s gonna be a very special one. See you in the pit x”

The tour will kick off in Glasgow on May 23, with gigs then following in Newcastle (May 24), Sheffield (May 25), Manchester (May 27), Birmingham (May 28), Cardiff (May 29) and Brighton (May 31). The band will wrap up the jaunt with a homecoming performance at The O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London.

You can see the full list of dates in the post above.

Although The Big Moon have not yet performed any headline dates in support of ‘Walking Like We Do’, the group did take to the stage at festivals including Neighbourhood Weekender, Boardmasters and Standon Calling over the summer.

Last month, the band supported Kaiser Chiefs and Courteeners at their shows at Halifax’s Piece Hall and Manchester’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground respectively.

In a review of the latter gig, NME wrote: “Kicking off with ‘Sucker’, openers The Big Moon exude an air of cool, their gritty and melodic guitar lines ring out blissfully as the sunshine beams down on us. Singer Juliette Jackson struggles to contain her joy when she says, ‘It’s nice to see your smiling faces’, while the band coast into the golden indie-pop of ‘Barcelona’.

“Reading the scale of the event, they drop a rousing cover of Fatboy Slim’s ‘Praise You’, but their own material is the real winner – a highlight coming with their dreamy and melodic anthem ‘Cupid’.”

MGMT’s Andrew Vanwyngarden shares moody cover of Tones & I’s ‘Dance Monkey’

MGMT’s Andrew Vanwyngarden has recorded a cover of Tones & I’s global hit ‘Dance Monkey’ – you can hear it below.

READ MORE: The story behind Tones And I, the Australian busker topping the charts with ‘Dance Monkey’

It comes after the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist promised a “super special prize” if Memphis radio station WYXR was able to hit a target of $2,000 in donations during a pledge drive.

After the station reached its target, Vanwyngarden revealed the prize he promised: a moody, psychedelic rendition of ‘Dance Monkey’, which he shared on the Time Passage radio show on WYXR. You can listen to the cover below.

VanWyngarden has had a busy 2021, starting in January with the release of a new song under his solo moniker Gentle Dom called ‘I Miss Dancing In New York’.

VanWyngarden also produced Cola Boyy‘s psychedelia-tinged ballad ‘Kid Born In Space’, released back in April. The track is described as “the culmination of a true friendship” between Cola Boyy and MGMT, completed by Ben Goldwasser.

In March, Metronomy shared an MGMT remix of their 2011 single ‘The Look’, arriving after the former revealed they would be reissuing their third album ‘The English Riviera’ to mark the milestone, followed by a 10th anniversary UK tour in 2022.

The ‘Metronomy Forever’ 2022 UK tour will celebrate a decade of the album and finish up with a huge London show at Alexandra Palace.

Tones & I, meanwhile, released her debut album, ‘Welcome To The Madhouse’, in July. The LP was previewed by the uplifting single ‘Cloudy Day’.

Speaking about the track, Tones & I said: “After my friend T passed away I was struggling to write any songs that were happy or that I even liked.

“I met up with a friend who told me this saying from his late mum – ‘on a cloudy day, look up into the sky and find the sun.’ I knew I wanted to use that as a lyric and the next time I went into the studio I wrote ‘Cloudy Day’.”

Madonna says writing her biopic is a “draining and challenging experience”

Madonna has described the process of working on her upcoming biopic as “the most draining, challenging experience” of her life.

READ MORE: Some material, girl: the iconic Madonna moments that deserve a spot in her biopic

The Queen of Pop revealed last September that she would be bringing her lengthy career to the big screen. Universal Pictures is developing the project, with Academy Award-winning writer/producer Diablo Cody (Juno) on co-writing duties.

During a new ‘Musicians On Musicians’ interview with Rolling Stone (published today, October 12), Madonna was asked by Maluma how it was to “relive” her past through the movie.

“Writing my script is the most draining, challenging experience I’ve ever had,” the singer responded. “It’s kind of like psychotherapy in a way, because I have to remember every detail from my childhood till now.”

Madonna continued: “Remembering all the things that made me decide to be who I am, my journey as an artist, my decision to leave Michigan to go to New York, all the things that happened to me when I was young and naive, my relationships with my family and friends, watching many of my friends die — sometimes, I have writing sessions where I go to bed and I just want to cry. You know what I mean?

“The thing is, I realise I forgot a lot of things, and reliving, digging deep, trying to recall emotions that I felt in certain moments, both joyful and traumatic experiences … I realise I’ve lived a crazy life.”

The NME Big Read: Madonna: ”People pick on me. That’s just the way it is”

Maluma suggested that Madonna’s past must have been “beautiful at the same time”, to which the star replied: “Beautiful, obviously. But I would find myself at night, lying there in bed, thinking, ‘My God, did that really happen to me? Did I really know that person?’”

Madonna shared a behind-the-scenes look at the process of writing the forthcoming film shortly before the project was officially announced last year. An hour-long Instagram Live broadcast saw Madge and Cody talk about where they were at with the movie at that time.

The ‘Madame X’ musician said it detailed her “struggle as an artist trying to survive in a man’s world”, covering a journey she called “happy, sad, mad, crazy, good, bad and ugly”.

Last week saw Madonna describe the project as a “visual autobiography”, saying:  “Don’t call it a biopic.” She added: “The reason I’m doing it is a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they’re always men.”

Meanwhile, Madonna hosted a secret ‘Madame X’ gig in New York last Friday night (October 8) and ended it by taking the show to the streets of Harlem.

Watch Eels’ intergalactic new video for ‘Good Night On Earth’

Eels have shared a new video for their recent single ‘Good Night On Earth’ – you can watch the bizarre clip below.

READ MORE: Eels on album ‘Earth To Dora’: “Dark phases happen, but they will get better”

The track is taken from the Mark ‘E’ Oliver Everett-led band’s upcoming 14th studio album ‘Extreme Witchcraft’, which is set for release on January 28, 2022 via PIAS and the band’s own E Works Records.

Directed by Steven Mertens, the primarily animated video for ‘Good Night On Earth’ builds up to “an intergalactic clash of the titans”. E stars in the clip as a newscaster who appears on TV as disaster strikes when an evil giant space lobster lands on Earth, forcing the musician to do battle with the creature.

“Just another newscaster-Godzilla-fighting-a-lobster-from-space video,” E said of the clip for the song, which you can watch below.

Speaking about ‘Extreme Witchcraft”s co-producer John Parish, E recently remarked: “John Parish is one of the most even-tempered, polite people I’ve ever met. A true gentleman. Actually he’s probably THE most polite person I’ve ever met.

“But when he gets into the studio he becomes a mad scientist. If you make music with John Parish, you get stuff no one else does. He has a really unique toolbox and musical outlook. Perhaps his politeness is a coping mechanism to keep Mr. Hyde under control when he’s out of his laboratory.”

Eels will head to the UK and Ireland in March 2022 for a set of tour dates in support of their new LP – you can see their upcoming tour schedule below.

March 2022
11 – Telegraph Building, Belfast
12 – Olympia Theatre, Dublin
14 – Roundhouse, London
15 – Albert Hall, Manchester
16 – Barrowland, Glasgow
17 – Rock City, Nottingham
18 – O2 Guildhall, Southampton

Watch James Blake and Slowthai’s sombre performance of ‘Funeral’ on ‘Fallon’

James Blake and Slowthai stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (October 11) to deliver a performance of their new track ‘Funeral’.

READ MORE: James Blake: “There’s always been more to me than sadness”

The original version of the song appears on Blake’s new album ‘Friends That Break Your Heart’, which was released last Friday (October 8). A new version featuring Slowthai arrived yesterday (October 11) with a new video.

The new version of ‘Funeral’ stays largely faithful to the original, with the sole addition being Slowthai’s pensively rapped second verse. On it, he spits: “I spread my wings, I got a nose bleed/ I been the dust on top of trophies, the rust that makes it homely/ The crust that no one wants, I was forgotten, I’ve gone mouldy.”

It marks the second time that Blake and Slowthai have joined forces, with the former appearing on Slowthai’s 2020 single ‘Feel Away’ (which also featured Mount Kimbie).

For their performance on Fallon, the pair, under dim lighting, sat behind Blake’s piano, which was made to look like a coffin, complete with a red and white flower arrangement. Blake and Slowthai were accompanied by a guitarist and a drummer, who played at the back of the sombre set.

You can watch the full performance below:

‘Friends That Break Your Heart’ marks Blake’s first full-length album since 2018’s ‘Assume Form’The album – arriving after December’s ‘Covers’ EP – features appearances from the likes of SZA, JID and Joji, as well as production from Blake’s partner, Jameela Jamil.

Jamil recently spoke out against criticism she’d received after being credited on the album, calling her detractors “part of the problem of why women don’t pursue producing”.

In a five-star review of Blake’s new album, NME‘s Ella Kemp wrote: “It’s beautiful and uncomfortable stuff – it’s James Blake in his richest, rawest form, still and always shapeshifting to find fascinating new ways to heal.”

Blake is set to take ‘Friends That Break Your Heart’ on the road next year, having recently announced a UK and European tour to kick off at the tail end of April. He’s also set to perform an “intimate solo piano show” in Kingston.
