Incubus’ Brandon Boyd on 20 years of ‘Morning View’: “We wanted to change our environment dramatically”

Incubus are in the midst of celebrating the 20th anniversary of their fourth album ‘Morning View’, and frontman Brandon Boyd has spoken to NME about the making of the seminal record.

Today (October 23), marks 20 years since the band released the record, and to celebrate they are heading back to the Malibu beach house where it was written and recorded for a livestream concert of the record performed in its entirety.

Speaking on the initial decision to record the album in the house on Morning View Drive in Malibu, Boyd told NME that the band, who were used to recording in “windless padded rooms,” wanted to be free from distractions during the recording process.

“We made the decision to not make our next album in a traditional setting so we rented this big, empty house up in Malibu kind of away from everything,” said Boyd. “We were interested in seeing what would happen if we changed our environment dramatically and set up in a living room together and brought out all of our gear into this house, where it was as distraction free as you could possibly be in that moment.”

Besides providing a peaceful retreat, the house and its stunning surroundings also inspired some of the album’s content. “Being in that sort of antithetical recording studio where there’s these beautiful, picturesque cathedral-type windows from the floor to ceiling, like 25 feet high, was amazing,” said Boyd.

“We got to watch the day move by as we were in there all day recording, and then at night, we got to watch the moon go by, and we got to watch the palm trees blowing in the wind; we would open the door sometimes and let the sea air into the room. That stuff affects everything, especially when you’re in a creative process.”

Acknowledging the beauty of “letting a natural environment inspire the art that you’re making”, the frontman added that the band probably should have given nature’s natural elements “a co-writer credit on the album”.

‘Morning View’ arrived two years after Incubus’ breakthrough third album ‘Make Yourself’. Coming off the back of that success, Incubus felt a little pressure going into the making of ‘Morning View’, but Boyd himself didn’t let it affect him.

“There was definitely a little bit of chatter in our kind of band family about that pressure,” he recalled. “I think maybe some of the other guys in the band may have experienced it a little bit differently, but you’d have to ask them. I can only speak for myself and I didn’t take on that weight. During that period of time, I was distracted, I suppose by the excitement of having the opportunity to record another album.”

He continued: “I was also coming off the heels of two, really just heartbreaking separations, like one after the other. So I was coming into the recording of ‘Morning View’ excited, elated, filled with enthusiasm, and heartbroken all at the same time. Looking back, I feel really lucky because I was able to experience those things through the lens of music and art, and the art was a catharsis but there’s also communion and it was all of these things wrapped up.”

The album spawned the hit singles ‘Nice To Know You’, ‘Are You In?’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ – the latter was one of the last songs to be recorded for the album.

“It came really quickly, because we had been sort of doing that creative weight training for five, almost six months,” Boyd said of the track. “We kept saying the album felt like it needed something else, like one more. There’s one more in us. And if I’m remembering correctly, we knocked that one out really quickly.”

The song wound up being released as the album’s first single, which Boyd said everyone was on board with straight away. Meanwhile, another fan favourite on ‘Morning View’ is the final track ‘Aqueous Transmission’ – an almost eight-minute therapeutic number that features multi-instrumentalist Suzie Katayama and hears Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger employ the use of a pipa, given to him by Steve Vai.

“I don’t think any of us thought that it would lend itself to an Incubus song,” Boyd said of the Chinese instrument. “Mikey and I grew up kind of mutually obsessed with Björk’s music. There was so much we loved about it: the weirdness of it, the instrumentation, the arrangements, the choices that she was making and that the producers were making. So we were like, let’s make a super Björky sounding breakbeat that’s really cool and eerie and mellow.

“We made a beat together, then he started playing the pipa and we kind of whittled down to that little riff. I don’t even think it was tuned properly. I think he tuned it to just a D. And it sounded awesome.”

Boyd went on: “From there, I started messing around with the lyrics, and I remember when he started playing that little riff over that kind of trip-hop sounding beat, I just started singing: ‘I’m floating down a river’. That’s what it sounded like. To me, it sounded like we were on this psychedelic river cruise somewhere. It was heavily leafed and wooded with the sound of nature around us.”

Incubus sketched out roughly 30 tracks for inclusion on ‘Morning View’, but the majority of those that were recorded and not used on the album are still yet to see the light of day. One track that has since been released, ‘Anything’, appears on the band’s 2009 greatest hits album, ‘Monuments And Melodies’.

“That was essentially just a demo that we recorded in that living room,” revealed Boyd. “The way the snare and the drum sounds, you can really tell that it’s that ‘Morning View’ living room.”

“There’s a lot of material and we might dust some of it off at some point,” the frontman said. “Sometimes old ideas or demos find their way into back into our sort of collective band consciousness and we’ll dust them off and rearrange them and they become new songs.”

Incubus’ 20th anniversary ‘Morning View’ livestream concert will be broadcast at 7:00pm BST on October 23 – get your tickets here.

Taylor Swift shares preview of ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ title track

Taylor Swift has shared a snippet of the title track from ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’ – check out the video below.

READ MORE: Taylor Swift’s new ‘Fearless’ is a success, but beware the dangers of the re-record

The re-recording of the singer-songwriter’s 2012 album – which features the singles ’22’, ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ and ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ – will arrive on November 12.

Taking to Instagram last night (October 22), Swift ushered in “Red season” by sharing a clip of herself wearing a red dress before showing off various red accessories, shoes and items of clothing.

“21 days til November 12 and I *promise* it’s worth the wait,” she wrote as the caption to the post, which is soundtracked by ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’. Tune in here:

Swift is remaking her first six studio albums – up to and including 2017’s ‘Reputation’ – following the controversial sale of her masters in recent years. The star released ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)’ in April before sharing a re-recording of ‘1989’ single ‘Wildest Dreams’ last month.

‘Red (‘Taylor’s Version)’ will contain “all 30 songs that were meant to go” on the original album, as well as collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers, Ed Sheeran and more. It was initially scheduled to arrive on November 19, but was pushed forward by one week.

Last week ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version’) returned to the top of the US Billboard 200 chart owing to huge physical sales of the record this month. According to Billboard, it racked up 152,000 equivalent album units in the US in the week ending October 7 – up by 1,931 per cent on the previous week.

Listen to PVRIS’s electric new track ‘My Way’

PVRIS have shared a brand new track called ‘My Way’ – you can listen to it below.

READ MORE: PVRIS: “Sometimes you’ve got to have the power – and the courage – to walk away”

The alt-rock band’s latest single follows August’s ‘Monster’, which marked the start of a “new era” for the Lynn Gunn-fronted band and was their first material since PVRIS’ acclaimed third album ‘Use Me’.

“‘My Way’ is a song about accepting and embracing the trials and tribulations of the past, present, and future,” Gunn said of the track. “It’s about facing the pain, loss, hard times, and hard decisions while finding empowerment and humility (and a sprinkle of humour) through it all.”

She continued: “Life always pushes us toward great change and growth. When we stop fighting it and flow with it, we offer ourselves, and others, so much more. Whatever way it takes us, our paths are all so uniquely our own. You have your way and I have my way.”

If there’s a war I’m gonna conquer it/ Don’t give a fuck about the consequence/ If I’m on the edge I’m going over it/ Spin around russian roulette/ Razor sharp teeth, I bite bullets/ I don’t hesitate just take the risk,” Gunn sings defiantly in the opening verse.

Before hitting the chorus, she delivers an unapologetic bridge: “Turn the days into nights/ Hit the switch in my mind/ I burn through phases of life/ No reset no rewind.” You can check out the Katharine White-directed video for ‘My Way’ above.

In a four-star review of ‘Use Me’, NME‘s Dannii Leivers described the album as one where Gunn “leaves her anxieties behind and steps forward into the spotlight.”

“‘Use Me’ is the sound of an artist flexing her muscles, making sense of and peace with her past and, most importantly, embracing a new future,” the review continued.

Big Sean gets cloaked in 65,000 bees in music video for new single ‘What A Life’

Big Sean‘s new collaborative effort with Hit-Boy, ‘What A Life’, sees the legendary rapper get covered in 65,000 for its official music video.

READ MORE: Big Sean: “God has taken away all these special people – there has to be a reason I’m still here”

Taking to Instagram overnight (October 23), Big Sean posted an image of himself covered by a swarm, confirming he really did go the extra mile for the clip. In a caption, he wrote: “In the song I said 100 B’s, but it was really 65,000 ’s on me.

“This not photoshopped neither. I HAD 65,000 Bee’s on me… love to the hive. I just ain’t want y’all to think it was some damn effects or some shit .”

Aside from his brush with the busy hive, the music video for ‘What A Life’ is a woven feature of contrasting frames, each shot featuring Sean reflecting on an area of his life. Sean floats above a city skyline, raps in a darkened room wearing a black suit, gets chased by a hoard of would-be brides and more, as he reflectively raps on his successes.

Watch it below:

Earlier this week, as part of the 122nd instalment of the Power 106 Los Angeles freestyle series, Sean dropped an almost nine-minute-long freestyle over four different beats.

Referencing Kobe Bryant, the rapper also used Drake‘s ‘Love All’ and Kanye West‘s ‘Hurricane’, from his latest album ‘Donda’.

Here’s Where Genre-Bending Albums From Lil Nas X, Halsey, Miley Cyrus & More Landed for 2022 Grammys

Even before first-round voting for the 64th annual Grammy Awards opened on Friday (Oct. 22), we knew that some albums wouldn’t be in the expected genre categories. Kacey Musgraves’ star-crossed was moved from best country album to best pop vocal album, while Bo Burnham’s Inside (The Songs) was slotted in best compilation soundtrack for visual media, not best comedy album, as had been expected.

These were hardly the only albums that wound up on the Grammy ballot in places you might not expect. That’s bound to happen as artists increasingly cross genres. Albums often wind up right on the border between two or more genres. In those cases, the Recording Academy’s screening committee endeavors to put it in the most suitable category.

Here are some of this year’s borderline albums, and where Grammy voters can find them on the online ballot. (Voters have until Nov. 5 to make their choices.) Nominations will be announced Nov. 23. The winners will be revealed Jan. 31, 2022.

Lil Nas X’s Montero and Doja Cat’s Planet Her are both vying for nods as best pop vocal album rather than best rap album.

Kylie Minogue’s Disco is competing for best pop vocal album rather than best dance/electronic album. The dance icon was nominated in the latter category with X in 2008.

Halsey’s If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power is vying for best alternative music album. The album’s co-producer, Trent Reznor, has been nominated three times in that category, for Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral (1993), The Fragile (1999) and Hesitation Marks (2013).

Various albums somewhere on the line between pop and rock wound up in different categories. Imagine Dragons’ Mercury Act 1 and Twenty One Pilots’ Scaled and Icy are both competing for best pop vocal album, while Machine Gun Kelly’s Tickets to My Downfall, Miley Cyrus’ Plastic Hearts, John Mayer’s Sob Rock and Paul McCartney’s McCartney III are vying for best rock album.

Imagine Dragons’ Evolve was nominated for best pop vocal album four years ago. Cyrus’ Bangerz was nominated in that same category seven years ago. Mayer has been nominated in the pop vocal album category twice — for Continuum (2006), which won, and Battle Studies (2010) — and in best rock album once, for Try! (also 2006). McCartney has yet to receive a nomination for best rock album, but he has been nominated for best pop vocal album twice — for Chaos and Creation in the Backyard (2005) and Memory Almost Full (2007) — and best alternative music album once, for Liverpool Sound Collage (2000).

The Black Keys’ Delta Kream is vying for best contemporary blues album. Should the album win, this would be the third album genre in which they have prevailed. Brothers won the 2010 award for best alternative music album. El Camino took best rock album two years later.

Carrie Underwood had two No. 1s on Top Country Albums during the eligibility period (Sept. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021) but neither is competing for best country album. Underwood’s Christmas album My Gift is vying for a nod as best traditional pop vocal album. Her sacred album My Savior is vying for a nod as best roots gospel album, rather than best contemporary Christian music album or best gospel album. (Surprising fact: Underwood is a seven-time Grammy winner, but she has yet to be nominated for best country album.)

Bad Bunny’s El Ultimo Tour del Mundo and Anuel AA & Ozuna’s Los Dioses are among the albums vying in the new best musical urbana album category. Bad Bunny won last year for best Latin pop or urban album. He had two nominations two years ago for best Latin, rock or alternative album.

Ty Dolla $ign’s Featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Bryson Tiller’s Anniversary are both vying for nods for best progressive R&B album rather than best rap album and best R&B album, respectively.

Ani DiFranco’s Revolutionary Love is vying for a nod as best R&B album. The veteran artist has received three nominations for best female rock vocal performance and two for best contemporary folk album.

Wizkid’s Made in Lagos is vying for a nod in the recently renamed best global music album category.

Travis Barker & Kourtney Kardashian Celebrate Halloween Early as Sid & Nancy: See Photos

Halloween isn’t until next weekend, but that isn’t stopping Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian from celebrating a little early.

The newly engaged couple shared photos of their spot-on costumes as ill-fated punk-rock couple Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen. The blink-182 drummer wore a black leather jacket, spiky black wig and Sid’s signature padlock necklace to embody the Sex Pistols bassist, while Kardashian wore a sheer fishnet shirt over a black bra with a curly blonde wig to dress up as the rocker’s girlfriend.

Of course, the story of Sid and Nancy doesn’t have a happy ending: Spungen was found dead from a stab wound at New York’s Chelsea Hotel  in October 1978 after a night with Vicious, who was charged with her murder but ended up dying of a heroin overdose four months later before he could stand trial. The couple was immortalized in the 1986 biopic Sid and Nancy, with Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb starring as the pair.

See photos below:

Barker and Kardashian announced their engagement Sunday via Instagram posts with the simple caption “forever.” The couple — who have been friends for years — reportedly began dating in January before making it Instagram-official on Valentine’s Day, when Kardashian shared a photo of their intertwined hands and Barker commented with a black-heart emoji.
