Aurora to perform at special climate and culture event during UN’s climate change conference

Aurora is among the acts who are set to perform live at a special climate and culture event during COP26, the upcoming United Nations climate change conference.

The conference is set to take place in Glasgow between October 31 and November 12, which is aiming to “bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on climate change”.

The UMA Entertainment Group will be hosting a special not-for-profit event during COP26 which will include panels, talks and live music. All profits from the event will be donated to Brian Eno‘s EarthPercent charity as well as a selection of social impact charities in Glasgow.

Set to take place at St. Luke’s Church in Glasgow’s East End on November 6, the event is part of ‘Beyond The Green’ – “a three-day COP26 fringe festival celebrating music and the arts, sustainability and plant-based solutions for a cleaner, greener, healthier planet”.

Aurora is headlining the event’s live music bill, with Sam Fischer and BEMZ (DJ set) also set to perform. DJ sets will also be provided by Groove Armada‘s Andy Cato, Sarra Wild and Darwin during the after-show event.

Aurora and Cato will also speak during the event, which is set to feature the involvement of Kumi Naidoo (Africans Rising), Professor Carly McLachlan (Tyndall Centre), Daniela Tajada (Count Us In), Mindahi Bastida (Alliance of Guardians), Clover Hogan (youth activist), Will Hutton (Beggars Group), Teresa Moore (A Greener Festival), Ross Patel (Music Managers Forum), Sophia Mathur (youth activist) and Phoebe Inglis-Holmes (BBC Music).

“We’re excited to host this event during the historic COP26 environmental summit,” Tara Borna, Global Marketing Director of UMA Entertainment Group, said.

“The reality is that climate change affects each and every one of us and incredible opportunities exist within the entertainment industry to help increase positive cultural impact. We thank all of our sponsors and partners for their continued support with this initiative.”

Back in April, the likes of The Cribs, Declan McKenna and Skunk Anansie showed their support for a campaign run by No Music On A Dead Planet which called on the government to do more to tackle climate change.

Suki Waterhouse signs to Sub Pop and tells us about her ‘Thelma & Louise’-inspired new song ‘Moves’

Suki Waterhouse has signed to Sub Pop and shared her first two songs under the label with ‘Moves’ and ‘My Mind’. Listen to them below, and check out NME’s interview with the British actor and musician.

Waterhouse has been releasing her own music since 2016, when she put out her debut single ‘Brutally’. Over the last five years, she’s shared a further four tracks that marry ‘60s girl group influences with dreamy, melancholy-tinged pop, each showcasing a knack for writing evocative lyrics and songs that linger with you long after they’re over.

“I’ve always been comfortable making music and playing it and even having the life of a musician, but I’ve always been so scared of actually putting out records,” she told NME over Zoom from Los Angeles last week. “The ones I’ve done before it’s been one song a year and I’ve really been trying to push myself to do that.”

Although it’s been a long time coming, Waterhouse’s debut album will finally arrive next year via the legendary Sub Pop. “It really was a surprise,” the musician explained of inking the deal. “I made the album by myself and then was sending it to some labels. I sent it to Sub Pop and didn’t get a response for months, and then nudged them again.” When the label’s team listened to the record, they came on board and snapped up the album.

‘Moves’, the first fruits of her relationship with the historic imprint, shows why. It is a timeless piece of pop that beautifully straddles romanticism and sadness, Waterhouse’s voice a gorgeous anchor as she shares small details from her life.

“That song is like a collection of diary entries put into one idea from over 10 years,” she explained. “Years ago, someone said to me that I looked like Suzi Quatro when I was out one night. I remember I didn’t know who she was at first, but I was like, ‘I think that’s a cool thing, I’m gonna try and keep being like this person’ and then going home and looking her up and hearing the Chris Norman version of her and him doing ‘Stumbling In’ and going down a total Suzi love hole.”

‘Moves’ was also inspired by feminist film classic Thelma & Louise, with Waterhouse imagining “the kind of song they’d be listening to when they drove off the cliff”. “‘Moves’ came from a place of strength, but also feeling a sense of abandon,” she added. “I was listening to a lot of Shangri-Las at the time and ‘60s girl band songs, which had a seduction to them but also a [sense of a] last chance and something desperate. My songwriting all comes from my places of helplessness, even if there’s a powerfulness [to it].”

While ‘Moves’ is a song Waterhouse has had in her back pocket for a couple of years, ‘My Mind’ came together last year. “I thought all my neighbours had gone away and it felt like there wasn’t much to do apart from stay up really late and drink,” she said. “‘My Mind’ came from being a screaming drunk girl with the amps turned up really loud and playing electric guitar. I loved what came from that and I didn’t get any complaints, which is good.”

The song embodies the feeling of being “really trapped”, the singer softly repeating the line “Nothing left to lose, only my mind”. For Waterhouse herself, she was stuck inside her head with her reservations about sharing her music with the world. “Being trapped in your own head for so long is actually what made me go, ‘OK, I know what I think I want this to sound like, I think I know who I can do it with’,” she explained.

She decided she wanted to work with Brad Cook, who has produced records for the likes of Bon Iver and Waxahatchee, and plays bass with Hiss Golden Messenger. “I’d listened to the Hiss Golden Messenger song ‘Cat’s Eye Blue’ a billion times,” she said of what inspired her to get Cook involved.

Waterhouse flew to North Carolina to start recording with him, with original plans to make her album in a “really old, beautiful church”. “And then someone came in and said, ‘We’ve booked this’ so we had to pack up and move,” she said. “We ended up making the record in a bridesmaid’s makeup room in a wedding hall. Where I sat listening to everything and singing all the vocals was literally a bridesmaid’s dressing room with a pillow that said ‘Live, Laugh, Love’.”

Making an album was something Waterhouse had been wanting “for so long” and reasoned she had pushed herself now, at 29, because she “had all these things I’ve never spoken about that I felt like I had to tie up before I go into my thirties”.

“[Music] is the only way that I really know how to express certain things, so it definitely felt like, ‘I’ve got to get this format’.”

With an album ready to go, the musician can now turn her attention to performing live. She made her first festival appearance at BottleRock Napa in California last month, having “barely done a show” at all before. “I definitely had that feeling where it feels like your teeth are going to be sick,” she said. “But as soon as I walked on, I was really happy to be there and just really comfortable.”

Now, Waterhouse is keen to ramp up that side of her life as an artist. “I really like the exhaustion and going around everywhere and not stopping,” she laughed. “That was always what I wanted for my life.”

Until she’s able to tour, she’ll be finding that creative satisfaction and happiness in being able to share her music. “There’s nothing that’s ever given me more joy than when I put out my first song ‘Brutally’,” she said. “It came from such a place of necessity – I did that whole song crying my eyes out and I was in such a desolate, hopeless place. But the fact that people listened to it and it’s been their song and being able to share something with them, it feels like something great came out of this darker time in my life and it made everything make sense.”

Her hope for ‘Moves’ and ‘My Mind’ – and, beyond that, her album – are similar: “I just hope that I can share them and I can mark the moments that created them with other people and then move on.”

In addition, labelmate and 2PM member Junho and actor Kim So-hyun are set to star in the music video for 2AM’s upcoming single, according to a report by South Korean news outlet SpoTV News.

Earlier this year, news outlet Herald POP, reported that the members had been discussing a possible comeback. At the time, Jo Kwon‘s agency Cube Entertainment said in a statement that the reunion was “being reviewed positively.”

Im Seulong‘s agency Jellyfish Entertainment and Jeong Jinwoon‘s agency Mystic Story had also supported the claim, saying that they were also considering a possible reunion of the beloved vocal group.

2AM – comprised of Jo Kwon, Lee Changmin, Lim Seulong and Jeong Jinwoon – made their debut in 2008, as a sibling group of boyband 2PM. Over their seven-year career, the vocal group released four studio albums and three mini-albums before going on hiatus in 2015 after three of the four members left JYP Entertainment.

Megan Thee Stallion protests Texas abortion law at Austin City Limits

Megan Thee Stallion protested Texas’ new abortion law during her set at the Austin City Limits festival this weekend.

The new legislation, Senate Bill 8, bans most abortions in Texas and makes the state the most restrictive in the United States in terms of access to abortion services.

The restrictive laws prohibit abortions to take place once cardiac activity can be detected in the foetus. This timeframe is typically around six weeks, before most people know they are pregnant. There are no exceptions for cases involving rape or incest, and private citizens have the right to take legal action against anyone involved in assisting an abortion to take place.

During her set on Saturday (October 8), Megan told the crowd (via Billboard): “This middle finger is also to these motherfucking men that want to tell us what the fuck to do with our body.

“‘Cause how the fuck you gonna tell me what to do with my motherfucking body? Drop that shit.”

Following the set, she wrote on Instagram: “Y’all know I’m a Texas girl and we deserve better! Politicians want to cut off abortion access and control our bodies, lives, and futures — I’m speaking up.”

YungbludMaggie RogersSt. Vincent and Lucy Dacus all spoke against the laws when they came into effect the first week of September. Dacus, along with Jack Antonoff, also pledged proceeds from their respective shows in Texas to charities that support abortions.

On October 1, Phoebe Bridgers officially released a version of Bo Burnham’s ‘That Funny Feeling’ on Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to a range of abortion funds in Texas.

Billie Eilish also took the opportunity to share her opposition to the law during her Austin City Limits headline set.

At one point during the show, Eilish admitted: “When they made that shit a law, I almost didn’t want to do the show because I wanted to punish this fucking place for allowing that to happen here.”

Elsewhere, Austin City Limits have apologised to Phoebe Bridgers for cutting her sound off before the end of her festival set last weekend.

Bridgers’ sound was cut in the lead-up to the climax of her ‘Punisher’ closing track ‘I Know The End’. Footage shows Bridgers continuing to play to the end of the track despite the interruption. Shortly after her set ended, she tweeted “lol fuck acl”.

THE BOYZ reportedly to release new music in November

THE BOYZ are reportedly slated to release new music this November.

READ MORE: THE BOYZ on ‘Thrill-ing’: “We’re in that spot where we can be more confident and try new things”

This is according to a October 12 report by South Korean news site JoyNews24, which claims that the boyband are currently filming a new music video in Seoul. The publication also noted that the group’s new project will be released in November.

However, the group’s agency Cre.Ker Entertainment has yet to confirm the report as of writing.

If true, THE BOYZ’s upcoming project will come just three months after the release of their sixth mini-album ‘Thrill-ing’. That release had marked the group’s first domestic release in approximately 11 months, since their fifth mini-album ‘Chase’ in September last year, which featured the title track ‘The Stealer’.

In a four-star review, NME’s Carmen Chin described ‘Thrill-ing’ as “a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions that not only pays tribute to their earlier sounds of fresh-faced wonder, but also takes unexpected twists in an ambitious showcase of versatility and experimentation.”

The group had also opened up about their mini album in an exclusive interview with NME. “There’s so many emotions that we associate with it and that we feel while going to one, it’s an emotional rollercoaster,” says Kevin.

“We had our share of bright and bubbly [concepts] and we had our share of dark and conceptual. I think this album is very bright, but at the same time very witty and tongue-in-cheek.”

Aside from a new EP, THE BOYZ also released the single ‘Kingdom Come’ earlier this year. The track, released as part of their appearance on Kingdom: Legendary War, has since become their first to top the real-time chart of South Korean streaming service Genie.
