Kelly Clarkson addresses allegations of toxic work environment on her talk show

Kelly Clarkson has addressed recent allegations of a toxic work environment on her daytime talk show.

The claims were made in a report by Rolling Stone last week (May 12), in which numerous staff members working on The Kelly Clarkson Show came forward — accusing the producers of “overworking” and “underpaying” employees.

In the report, one current employee and 10 former members of staff spoke anonymously about the workplace environment behind the scenes of the chat show. “I remember going up on the roof of the stage to cry,” one said, describing the emotional impact the job took on them. “[I was] being like, ‘Oh, my gosh, what am I doing? Why am I putting myself through this?’”

As per the statements, the staff collectively agreed that Clarkson herself was “fantastic” and stated that she must have “no clue how unhappy her staff is”.

Following the report, the host has taken to social media to address the accusations. “In my 20 years in the entertainment industry, I’ve always led with my heart and what I believed to be right,” Clarkson wrote on Saturday (May 13). “I love my team at The Kelly Clarkson Show, and to find out that anyone is feeling unheard and or disrespected on this show is unacceptable.”

She also went on to explain how the team will be reinforcing a positive work environment going forward by introducing new leadership training for all current employees.

“I have always been, and will continue to be, committed to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment at The Kelly Clarkson Show. As we prepare for a move to the East Coast, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that not only our team that is moving, but also our new team in NY, is comprised of the best and kindest in the business,” she said.

“Part of that build will include leadership training for all of the senior staff, including myself. There is always room to grow and ensure we are all being/becoming the best version of ourselves in any business. Especially when it comes to leadership, to ensure that any notion of toxicity is eradicated.”

A spokesperson for NBCUniversal also weighed in on the report, sharing a statement discussing how they have taken all accusations very seriously. “We are committed to a safe and respectful work environment and take workplace complaints very seriously and to insinuate otherwise is untrue,” they explained (via The Hollywood Reporter). “When issues are reported they are promptly reviewed, investigated and acted upon as appropriate.”

In other news, earlier this year Clarkson confirmed that new music will be coming “really soon”, and announced her new album ‘Chemistry’.

Reportedly in the works for over three years, she described the forthcoming LP as representing the “arc of an entire relationship”. “A whole relationship shouldn’t be brought down to just one thing. So there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly kinda thing going on it.”

A release date for the album has not yet been confirmed.

The Weeknd pitched ‘The Idol’ concept by saying he could start a cult if he wanted to

Sam Levinson, director of the upcoming HBO series The Idol has revealed how The Weeknd – real name Abel Tesfaye – first pitched the idea of the show to him.

READ MORE: The Weeknd – ‘Dawn FM’ review: soulful star meets a new day with hope and hindsight

Speaking to W Magazine, Levinson recalled: “Abel came to us with a pitch. He said something that I’ll always remember: ‘If I wanted to start a cult, I could.’ What he meant is that his fans were so loyal and devoted that they would follow him anywhere. That was the germ of the idea for The Idol: what happens when a pop star falls for the wrong guy and no one speaks up.”

Levinson and The Weeknd had an outline for the show two days later, and approached HBO with a script for the series’ pilot episode later, with the network reportedly picking it up immediately.

Tesfaye and Levinson picked a fresh team to handle production on the show, led by director Amy Seimetz as Levinson was busy working on Euphoria at the time. However, Seimetz’ version of The Idol underwent an overhaul in April 2022 after a rough-cut was completed that led to various changes in the cast and crew, including the departure of Seimetz.

Tesfaye was reportedly concerned the dynamic between his cult figure character and Jocelyn in the original cut was “not as complex” as they had initially envisioned, which led to a “pivot”. “Film and TV is a new creative muscle for me,” Tesfaye said. “I don’t release my music until I think it is great. Why would this be any different?”

In a report on Rolling Stone earlier this year, various anonymous sources alleged that Levinson’s rewrites and reshoots added more nudity and disturbing sexual content which changed the show’s message.

In April 2022, Deadline reported that the show was getting a rehaul as Tesfaye was unhappy with the show’s creative direction, which at the time reportedly focused too much on “the female perspective” of Depp’s character, rather than his own.

HBO issued a statement in response to the Rolling Stone report, which read: “The initial approach on the show and production of the early episodes, unfortunately, did not meet HBO standards so we chose to make a change.”

“Throughout the process, the creative team has been committed to creating a safe, collaborative, and mutually respectful working environment, and last year, the team made creative changes they felt were in the best interest of both the production and the cast and crew.”

The Idol is scheduled to premiere on June 4, 2023.

Released today (May 15), his management wrote on social media: “We would like to share the playlist Ryuichi has been privately compiling to be played at his own funeral to accompany his passing. He truly was with music until the very end.”

Check out the post below.

— ryuichi sakamoto (@ryuichisakamoto) May 15, 2023

The 33-track playlist features some of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s favourite music, including works from Back, Debussy and Ravel, and opens with an 11-minute piece ‘Haloid Xerrox Copy 3 (Paris)’ from Sakamoto’s frequent collaborator Alva Noto.

Listen to the playlist below.

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Funeral’ playlist comes shortly after Milan Records released a newly compiled collection of solo works by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, titled ‘Travesía’. The album was curated by Oscar-winning Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu, with the album’s title translating to ‘journey’ in Spanish.

The pioneering composer died on March 28, aged 71 after being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021 and throat cancer in 2014. In late December last year, the lauded composer and founder of the Yellow Magic Orchestra played his final show, a livestreamed concert titled ‘Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano 2022’.

Johnny Marr, Massive Attack and David Bowie’s estate were among artists who lead tributes to the composer.

Following Ryuichi Sakamoto’s death, Daniel Peters wrote of Sakamoto’s legacy for NME: “Throughout his career, he restlessly bucked tradition, innovating within instrumentation, composition and technology. Over the decades, he remained fascinated with the pop song, testing the endurance of its form through different methods of musicianship – even while holding on to his earliest and dearest classical inspirations. In the wake of his departure, it’s hard to imagine that there will ever be another like Ryuichi Sakamoto.”

Over the weekend, WEi and their label OUI Entertainment announced that they have cancelled all dates on their upcoming Latin America ‘Passion’ tour, with the exception of the Mexico City stop on June 4.

“We requested visa issuance and other matters that had to be checked in advance to ensure smooth performance. Nevertheless, we were told to proceed with the concert without issuing a proper visa and to perform in an open-air venue,” OUI Entertainment said.

“Furthermore, some of the notices were not negotiated with OUI Entertainment before uploading,” the agency added. “Although we tried to proceed with the performance through continuous consultation, we have judged that it would be difficult to proceed with MC Entertainment for this tour.”

The dates on WEi’s tour that have been cancelled are: Merida (June 5) and Monterrey (June 7), San Salvador (June 9), San Jose (June 11), Caracas (June 13) and Caguas (June 15).

“If you purchased tickets for concerts listed above, please request refund and cancellation to the MC Entertainment,” OUI Entertainment noted, adding that it “does not have the authority to issue a refund but we will check to ensure refund and cancellation for all ticket holders”.
