Daniel Johns tried “reuniting” Silverchair for ‘FutureNever’ cameo: “When they didn’t want to, I didn’t care”

Daniel Johns has revealed that in the process of making his latest solo album, ‘FutureNever’, he attempted to reunite with his former bandmates in Silverchair.

READ MORE: Every Silverchair and Daniel Johns release ranked in order of greatness

The revelation comes in the premiere episode of Johns’ three-part docuseries Inside The Mind Of Daniel Johns, titled ‘Reclaim Your Art’ which will land on YouTube at 6pm AEST (9am BST) on Monday August 22. A press release for the premiere also promises that it will see Johns “break his silence” on the nervous breakdown he faced over recent years, as well as his struggles with self-medication and subsequent stint in rehab.

Ahead of the episode’s release, Johns shared a preview in the form of a quote touching on his failed attempt to reunite Silverchair (albeit not formally under that moniker) for a song on ‘FutureNever’. He stressed that his aim in reaching out to his former bandmates – drummer Ben Gillies and bassist Chris Joannou – came “not out of necessity”, but because he “wanted to make it clear that I don’t have an issue with them as people”.

“I just didn’t want to play under the banner of Silverchair once I’d established myself as an artist outside of Silverchair,” Johns continued. “I asked them to come again and then when they didn’t want to, I didn’t care. It was like, ‘I asked you, it’s cool, I’ll play the drums with spatulas.’”

Elsewhere in the ‘Reclaim Your Art’ episode of Inside The Mind Of Daniel Johns, the Australian singer expresses gratitude over the recent success of ‘FutureNever’. In his home country, the album – which arrived back in April via BMG – peaked at Number One on the ARIA Albums Chart, and went on to break records as the longest-reigning Top Two, Top Three, Top Five and Top Ten Australian release of 2022.

Such is especially notable because Johns was unable to promote the album itself in the weeks leading up to its release. As he explained in another preview quote from the docuseries: “I haven’t been there at all to promote ‘FutureNever’, so for it to become the chart success it has is testament to the people who have been supporting me and I’m eternally grateful for the love.

“For probably the first time in my life, I’ve sacrificed the art for both my physical and mental health. I had a nervous breakdown, I really fucked up – I’ve been processing pain and guilt. I’m going on the record now to talk about the dark but also the light. This is a healing journey, but I also need to talk about the music because it’s the only thing that pulled me through.”

Just under a month before ‘FutureNever’ was released (on March 23), Johns was involved in a car accident caused by drunk driving. The incident led Johns to admit himself into a rehabilitation centre, and he later pleaded guilty to a charge of high-range drink-driving. He avoided jail time when he faced a court in July, when he was ordered to complete 10 months of an intensive corrections sentence.

In a public statement released shortly thereafter his guilty plea in April, Johns wrote: “I take full responsibility for my actions on the evening of March 23rd, I am deeply remorseful and I am working every day to make amends.”

In a four-star review of ‘FutureNever’, NME’s Andrew Trendell praised the album for the way it “shows off [Johns’] range”, writing: “While there’s a lot of Daniel Johns at his best here, this isn’t ‘The Best Of Daniel Johns’. There’s rock bravado throughout, but you won’t get a whiff of ‘Frogstomp’. Styles and eras clash, but ‘Neon Ballroom’ it ain’t. There is, however, a vulnerability, curiosity and adventure that makes ‘FutureNever’ unmistakably Johns. That kid who once asked you to wait for tomorrow is living in it today.”

Following tonight’s premiere of ‘Reclaim Your Art’, subsequent episodes of Inside The Mind Of Daniel Johns will be released at 6pm AEST (9am BST) on Mondays. The second episode, ‘The Silver Chair’, will launch on August 29, while the finale, ‘FutureNever (Forever)’, premieres on September 5.

The Weeknd heads to the “the gutters of Hollywood” in new teaser for ‘The Idol’

HBO have released the second teaser for The Idol, the upcoming drama series created by “the sick and twisted minds of” The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) and Euphoria helmer Sam Levinson.

READ MORE: The Weeknd – ‘Dawn FM’ review: soulful star meets a new day with hope and hindsight

As well as reminding us that The Idol will feature copious amounts of sex, the new preview offers a closer look at its extended cast. Tesfaye himself will star as a self-help guru, club owner and leader of a modern-day cult, who begins dating an up-and-coming pop artist played by Lily-Rose Depp.

In the trailer, we see the latter’s character being taken on a night of clubbing by BLACKPINK‘s Jennie (credited here as Jennie Ruby Jane), who will makes her acting debut in the series.

Already confirmed was that the main cast will also feature Troye Sivan, ex-Disney Channel luminary Debby Ryan and Transparent breakout Hari Nef, while the recurring cast will include Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio and Tyson Ritter of The All-American Rejects.

In the latest teaser, we learn that other actors and artists set to appear include Moses Sumney, Mike Dean, Suzanna Son, Jane Adams, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Ramsey and Hank Azaria. The lattermost inclusion is especially notable since Tesfaye recently cameoed in an episode of The Simpsons (on which Azaria voices more than a dozen characters).

Have a look at the new trailer for The Idol below:

Jennie spoke about her casting in The Idol last month, saying in a statement from YG Entertainment: “I found the script very intriguing, so I wanted to be part of the series. I feel very excited. I’ll work hard, so please watch me with affection.” The new trailer comes just days after BLACKPINK returned with their new single ‘Pink Venom’.

Little else is known about The Idol, although the new trailer does promise that it’ll take us deep into “the gutters of Hollywood”. The first season will run for six episodes and is primed to arrive on HBO Max sometime before the year’s end, with a specific premiere date yet to be announced. In the UK, The Idol will premiere on Sky and streaming service NOW.

The show itself was announced last June and began filming that November. Back in April, it was reported that extensive reshoots would be taken out to overhaul its creative direction; HBO confirmed as much, saying in a statement that the series was “adjusting” its cast and crew to serve a new direction.

Tesfaye is currently on tour across North America, performing as The Weeknd on his long-delayed ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ run. In a four-star review of ‘Dawn FM’ – which arrived back in January – NME’s Rhian Daly said the follow-up to 2020’s ‘After Hours’ “feels like the first steps on a journey for The Weeknd to find peace with himself”.

Earlier this month, Tesfaye dropped a remix of the ‘Dawn FM’ cut ‘Best Friends’ featuring Summer Walker. It’s also been teased that a new collaboration with Grimes will be released this summer.

Later this year, Tesfaye will launch haunted houses at Universal Studios in Hollywood and Universal’s Orlando resort, inspired by his 2020 album ‘After Hours’. The houses, both named The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare, were designed by the team behind Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights, in collaboration with the singer himself. They are based on the visuals and aesthetics from ‘After Hours’.

Saucony Draws Upon A Golden Japanese Art Form With The Shadow 6000 Kintsugi

Widely adorned for their uniquely crafted racing silhouettes, the centuries old Lexington-based running brand is fraternizing with itself for a Saucony x Saucony Shadow 6000 proposition with deep rooted ties to the art form of Kintsugi.

The process of the ancient Japanese art style involves reconstructing fractured pottery utilizing liquid gold, revealing an infinite glue-like golden seam filling the imperfections of the piece. That same process is replicated in the pistachio suede overlays as metallic gold threading connects the uppers panels and pops through cracked-like stitching along the interior medial side.

The aforementioned palette is additionally treated in its perforated nubuck base and upper eyestays in an effort to mimick the crafts embracing of flaws as the gray weathered tongue opts for a premium hint with an embossed Kanji Saucony tag tongue and faded tan laces. A grey suede heel counter is paired with a matching black speckled midsole while the chocolate brown semi-translucent outsole places the finishing touches on Saucony’s high-milage running shoe.

Enjoy official images of the Saucony Shadow 6000 “Kintsugi” as sizes are available now at saucony.com for a retail price of $150.

In other collaboration news, YCMC is offering four different lacing options for their association with the New Balance 990v3.

Missing Teen Kiely Rodni Reportedly Found In Car Underwater By YouTube Dive Team

Earlier this month, California teen Kiely Rodni was declared missing after she mysteriously disappeared from Truckee following a night of partying with other young friends in the Lake Tahoe region. As TMZ notes, there were no traces left behind, and the 16-year-old has remained unaccounted for since.

While Dog the Bounty Hunter confirmed that he was receiving several tips about the young girl’s whereabouts, he was reluctant to jump in due to the backlash he faced amid his search for Gabby Petito last year.

Thankfully, another group of YouTubers, known as Adventures with Purpose, pledged that they would assist in the hunt for Rodni just a few days ago, and according to their social media pages, they make have located her – although it doesn’t sound as though she’s alive.

“WE JUST FOUND KIELY RODNI,” a post on AWP’s Facebook page declared earlier on Sunday (August 21). The creators noted that the 16-year-old is confirmed to be located inside a vehicle that’s been submerged upside down in approximately 14 feet of water for an indeterminate amount of time.

An exact discovery location has yet to be unveiled, though some are saying it might have been in Prosser Lake. It remains unclear how Rodni ended up in the car that was ultimately submerged into the lake, or if foul play is suspected.

Rod Wave’s “Beautiful Mind” Debuts At No. 1 After Moving 115K Album Equivalent Units

For the second time in his career, Rod Wave has delivered a studio album that’s landed him on top of the Billboard 200.

As Complex notes, the 22-year-old’s Beautiful Mind project amassed 115K equivalent album units during its first week out – 113K of which was made up of SEA units, or 157.73M on-demand streams.

His last release to achieve such a feat was 2021’s SoulFly, and while past arrivals like Pray 4 Love and Ghetto Gospel didn’t come out on top, they still managed to squeeze into the chart’s top 10 at the time.

Prior to Beautiful Mind‘s debut, Rod promised his fans that this will be his “last sad ass album.” He told his social media followers, “I’m off dat. Jus wanna live happy, travel, get dis money.”

The Florida-born artist proved his musical strength in beating out Bad Bunny’s fourth studio album, Un Verano Sin Ti, which has steadily been topping projects from artists like Post Malone and Brent Faiyaz even weeks after its initial release.

This past week, the Latin rap project amassed 108K album units, slating it at No. 2. Beyoncé’s RENAISSANCE followed in third place for the second consecutive week in a row, racking up 64K units.

After that on the latest ranking from Billboard comes Megan Thee Stallion’s Traumazine, which moved 63K album equivalent units (54K SEA units, or 85.72M on-demand official streams).  The H-Town Hottie is no stranger to the top 10 and this is her sixth straight project to land there, though the highest she’s ever ranked is at No. 2 with 2020’s Good News.

Biggie Smalls’ Daughter T’yanna Wallace Posted $1M Bond For Her Boyfriend’s Hit-And-Run: Report

Tyshawn Baldwin is a free man once again – thanks to the $1M bond posted by his girlfriend (and the daughter of The Notorious B.I.G.) after he mowed over three pedestrians, including a toddler in a stroller, earlier this month.

Documents obtained by XXL Mag reveal that Baldwin was arrested on August 16th after surrendering to the police for the aforementioned incident which took place on August 10th. At the time, T’yanna Wallace’s partner allegedly sped off from police during a routine traffic stop in Queens, hitting a small group of people in the process.

Police slapped Baldwin with 17 criminal charges, including unlawful fleeing from a police officer, endangering the welfare of a child, and reckless endangerment. Just two days later (August 18) he made bond.

According to the NY Post, Wallace had the help of bail bondsman Ira Judelson, and allegedly had to put up her $1.5M Brooklyn home to secure her man’s release.

It’s been noted that the three victims in the hit-and-run incident all suffered injuries, with the mother and 2-year-old child being treated for minor wounds at a local hospital, and a 35-year-old man suffering a more serious injury to his leg.

Baldwin is expected to return to court on October 18th. If convicted of the 17 charges he’s been hit with, he could face up to 25 years in prison.

Check back in with HNHH later for any updates on T’yanna Wallace’s boyfriend’s hit-and-run case.
