DJ fined for “lending” soundsystem for warehouse rave days before Downing Street party

A former BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ has been fined £1000 for supplying an illegal rave with a soundsystem during the second lockdown in 2020.

Maressa Innerarity, who is also known as Carmen London, provided equipment at a warehouse rave for 200 people in Bethnal Green, City of London Magistrates’ Court heard.

Although she was not the event organiser, she arrived at the event with her own sound system, reports The Mirror.

Despite that, prosecutor Nathan Paine-Davey said that her offence was enough to charge her for being involved in holding the gathering.

At the time the country was just days into a lockdown which prevented any sort of mass gatherings indoor and out.

The prosecutor said: “This relates to November 7 and 8. The defendant has been charged with an offence against the public protection coronavirus restrictions regulations which were in force on November 5, 2020.”

Eric Kawoya, defending, said Innerarity had been asked by two friends named if they could borrow her sound equipment.

He told the court his client did not know the equipment would be used for a party.

Mr Kawoya added: “She packed them in the car and drove to the venue. She was not told what kind of function was taking place. When she arrived at the venue at the time the place was empty but as time went by, people started to arrive.

“She had cause for concern and she asked what was going on and they said to her not to worry. She couldn’t leave because she was concerned for the safety of the speakers and damage to the speakers.”

But District Judge Tim Godfrey said “it was a blatant breach of the lockdown and coronavirus regulations in force at the time”, and Innerarity was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £100 prosecution costs and a £100 surcharge.

The gathering was held just days before an alleged Downing Street flat party on the same day as Boris Johnson’s former chief adviser, Dominic Cummings and communications director, Lee Cain, left their roles.

That flat party was the subject of Sue Gray’s report which was released earlier today (January 31), along with the May 20, 2020 “bring your own booze” event in Downing Street’s garden and the PM’s birthday on June 19, 2020.

Gray said “too little thought” was given to public health concerns and confirmed that the Metropolitan Police is investigating 12 events, on eight separate dates for alleged coronavirus rule-breaking.

In the House of Commons, Johnson said he accepted the report’s findings in full.

He added: “I am sorry for the things we simply didn’t get right and also sorry for the way this matter has been handled.”

Watch Machine Gun Kelly confess new album title change to Travis Barker

Machine Gun Kelly has changed the name of his forthcoming new album just months after he got a matching tattoo with Travis Barker of the original LP’s title.

READ MORE: Machine Gun Kelly: “I’ve been jumping up and down on the table, believing in myself, for-fucking-ever”

Back in August, the rapper/rocker shared a video of himself and Barker, the album’s executive producer, both brandishing new tattoos of the title ‘Born With Horns’.

“‘Born With Horns’ the album. we’re back for round two…” Kelly captioned the short clip, at the time.

Now, the pair have appeared in a new TikTok video in which MGK confesses to Barker that he’s now changed the album title to ‘Mainstream Sellout’.

@machinegunkelly

my bad @travisbarker

♬ original sound – Colson

The follow-up to 2020’s ‘Tickets To My Downfall’ is set to be “more guitar-heavy” and lyrically “deeper”, MGK said last year.

“It feels more guitar-heavy for sure, lyrically it definitely goes deeper – but I never like to do anything the same,” he added. “Every album is a juxtaposition of the last album. So I went and studied ‘Tickets’, and I heard the bright sound that I had, and for this album I just turned the lights off.”

The album’s first single ‘Papercuts’ – which arrived in August 2021 – continued the pop-punk sound of ‘Tickets To My Downfall’.

Yesterday (January 30), he teased an upcoming collaboration with Willow, sharing a clip of a track called ‘Cherry Red Lipstick’.

The musician had already revealed that he had worked with Willow previously, but had said that the song they had worked on together was called ‘Emo Prom’.

It’s unclear whether the Willow collaboration will feature on MGK’s new record.

Meanwhile, Kelly recently teamed up with Barker on iann dior’s new single ‘thought it was’, which appears on the rising artist’s recently-released third studio album, ‘On To Better Things’. The three musicians previously worked together on the 2020 single ‘Sick And Tired’, as well as ‘Tickets To My Downfall’.

Official Images Of The KAWS x sacai x Nike Blazer Low “Reed”

KAWS and sacai may have on their hands one of the most exciting collaborations of the Winter 2021 season. Releasing in two waves, their Blazer Lows proffer an effective use of the New York artist’s skillset, combining colors that Chitose Abe herself has yet to come up with. And among the selection, the second drop’s “Reed” colorway stands out just a bit from the rest, its upper the most replete with neutrals.

The titular hue, which reads as a desaturated tan, is used heavily throughout the upper. Serving as the leather base as well as the outermost tongue, the shade visually amplifies the features atop, such as the shiny blue Swoosh and pastel-dominant eye stay panels. Adjacent, the lace unit — while half-comprised of the same earth tone — is highlighted similarly, stringing in bright pops of orange. All is then sat atop the same white midsole unit that outfits the options previous.

This “Reed” colorway dropped exclusively through sacai back on December 9th, but this recent emergence of official images may hint at a future SNKRS release. This is by no means a confirmation, but enjoy the official images for now. In other sacai news, check out the sacai Nike Cortez releasing during the AW22 season.

The JJJJound x BAPE STA Is Releasing On February 5th

Late last year, just days before Christmas, JJJJound teased their upcoming collaboration with A BATHING APE, which saw the BAPE STA clad in the Montreal studio’s usual sense of minimalism. The apparel, which was revealed last week, offers a similar design language, as the Made in Japan blanks are only dressed with the capsule’s “A TASTEFUL APE” logo. Soon — this Saturday, specifically — all of the above will hit the digital shelves, and “SOLD OUT” will surely follow soon after.

Finally pictured in better detail, the JJJJound x BAPE STA lacks any noteworthy color. Calf leather is used for the neutral upper as well as the light grey hits along the “STA” logo and heel tab. Round laces in both white and beige are included in the package, lacing up near the top’s metallic silver eyelets and the textile mesh lining. And though BAPE branding is replaced by JJJJound’s at the heel, the Japanese label’s logos remain intact atop the midsole and tongue.

For a closer look at the BAPE STAs, take a peek below. The entire collection is set to launch this Saturday, February 5th, at 12pm EST on JJJJound.com and BAPE’s own online channels and stores.

Blake Shelton Duets With 6-Year-Old Fan Who Needs a Heart Transplant: Watch

Blake Shelton shared a special moment with a young fan during his concert at Choctaw Casino & Resort in Durant, Okla., on Jan. 29, when the country star welcomed to the stage 6-year-old Wyatt McKee, who is waiting for a heart transplant.

Wyatt’s mother had previously shared a video on social media, capturing the moment she told her son that someone had paid for them to go see Shelton in concert.

“We just got the news that a very nice man who heard about how much Wyatt loves Blake Shelton has paid for his ticket to see him live!! He’s so excited!! I don’t know this man but thank you so much!!” the boy’s mother shared on Facebook.

At the concert, Wyatt’s evening got even better when Shelton noticed Wyatt’s homemade sign, which read, “Your smallest biggest fan from Lake Texoma, 6 [year old] waiting on a [heart] transplant.”

Shelton invited the boy to join him onstage and read Wyatt’s sign to the crowd.

“Think y’all are having a bad day, put that into perspective right there, man,” Shelton told the crowd as he kneeled next to the boy. “The next note he has on here, he asks if he can sing this song with me.”

Shelton continued to kneel on the stage next to Wyatt while the pair sang one of the young boy’s favorite Shelton hits, “God’s Country.” The song, released in 2019, won the Country Music Association’s single of the year honor, and was nominated for a Grammy for best country solo performance.

After the concert, the boy’s mother shared the experience on Facebook, saying, “I don’t know if Blake Shelton will ever see this but I just want to let him know he is awesome and officially my favorite person he absolutely made Wyatt’s day thank you so much to him and everyone who stopped us to tell him how great he was on stage and told him they are praying for him!!! Definitely a night to remember!!! #WyattStrong”

Sam Lay, Blues Drummer Who Played With Bob Dylan & Others, Dies at 86

CHICAGO (AP) — Sam Lay, a Chicago blues drummer and vocalist who played with Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, has died at age 86.

Lay died Saturday (Jan. 29) of natural causes in Chicago, Alligator Records said Monday (Jan. 31).

Lay, known for wearing a cape and carrying a walking stick, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 as part of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

“Words can’t describe it if you like blues like I do,” Lay told the South Bend Tribune that year, referring to the band. “I enjoyed the moment of it, and everybody that was in that band, I enjoyed. I learned a lot from everybody in there, and they claim they learned a lot from me.”

Alligator Records said Lay was known for his “trademark, hard-to-copy ‘double-shuffle’” drumming, based on double-time hand-clapping in his childhood church.

Lay, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, played professionally in Cleveland in the mid-1950s before moving to Chicago, the record label said.

In 1969, he played drums on “Fathers & Sons,” Waters’ best-selling record on Chess Records.

Lay backed up Dylan on drums in 1965 at the Newport Folk Festival. It caused a stir in the crowd because Dylan played an electric guitar and had turned to a rock sound.

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: Pink Sweat$, Raveena, Sinéad Harnett & More

It’s not Valentine’s Day quite yet, but love-centric R&B dominates this week’s Fresh Picks. From Pink Sweat$’s romance-filled EP, Pink Moon, to a flirty collab from Raveena and Vince Staples, here are some of our favorite tracks of the week to prepare you for all the love (for yourself, or otherwise) on the horizon.

Share the wealth with your loved ones, with our Spotify playlist linked below.

Pink Sweat$ feat. Blxst, “For Me”

On “For Me,” R&B songwriting savant Pink Sweat$ declares that what is meant for him will always be for him. Enlisting the help of Los Angeles up and comer Blxst, the pair reflect sweetly on their path and purpose, highlighting the importance of keeping a clear head overtop the trap R&B beat. “I’m feeling godly/ I break the chains that confine me/ Light live inside me,” Sweat$ sings over the bridge.

Amber Mark, “One”

The opening track on Amber Mark’s debut album Three Dimensions Deep makes quite the statement. The singer leans into a rap-like cadence, exemplifying her versatility from the jump. Intertwined with her raspy melodies, “One” is equal parts rugged and gentle, a symbol of the singer’s own journey and messaging.

Sinéad Harnett, “Let Go”

Sinead Harnett brings all the ethereal vibes on “Let Go.” The singer’s laid back, floating harmonies hover across the constantly building production, making for a standout track on the deluxe version of Ready Is Always Too Late.  An honorable mention goes to another track from the deluxe album, Harnett’s replay-worthy cover of Aaliyah’s rendition of “At Your Best (You Are Love).”

Audrey Nuna, “Changes”

Audrey Nuna’s “changes” goes from sweet to sick in a matter of milliseconds. The Jersey rapper rides a dark and twisted beat, her buttery-smooth tone juxtaposing the rock-rap instrumental.

YEИDRY x Lous and the Yakuza, “Mascarade”

French-Spanish fusion R&B, anyone? Yendry and Lous and the Yakuza combine two of the sexiest languages on earth to make it perfectly clear that if you want to talk to them, first take off your mask. The independent anthem overflows with confidence and badass energy from the two friends, who met through their solo COLORS performances.

Nija, “Beautiful Lies”

Nija might just say what you want to hear on new song “Beautiful Lies.” After creating a buzz with her R&B drill fusion “Ease My Mind,” the New Jersey-bred singer just released her brash and self-assured debut EP Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You. Once a songwriter for big names like Beyoncé, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and Summer Walker, Nija is forging her own path as an artist in the R&B space.

ASTN, “Gradually”

ASTN explores the beauty of letting go on his new single “Gradually.” The L.A.-based artist went viral a few months ago for an R&B cover of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” and recently signed with Warner Records as a result. ASTN says of “Gradually” in a statement: “The song poses the question: Is it more agonizing to see someone you love vanish from your life all of the sudden, or slowly detach from you over time?”

Joseph Chilliams feat. Mia Gladstone, “Rick James”

Joseph Chilliams teamed up with Mia Gladstone for his lighthearted new single “Rick James.” The two duet as the Pivot Gang member insists that he’s a “young, pretty n—a like Rick James” and delivers other laughable bars like “killed the p—-y like John McCain” and “protecting the hood like Google when you try to use a different computer for your email.”

Raveena feat. Vince Staples, “Secret”

On her new single “Secret,” Raveena is the ultimate flirt. Recruiting Vince Staples for the enchanting new track, the Queens/Connecticut singer is whispery as she asks her lover if he can keep a secret. “Secret” is the second single off of her upcoming album Asha’s Awakening.

Frsh Waters, “What’s Next..?”

Frsh Waters has been in his bag, as exemplified by the Chicago rapper’s introspective new single “What’s Next..?.” Produced by Ambi Lyrics, the song finds him reflecting on the past and pondering the future. “Riding in something decent/ Praying none of my dogs get left at the precinct/ Push this rap OT so bail money never be the reason,” Frsh raps.

The group of Martín Vargas, Simón Vargas, Juan Pablo Isaza and Juan Pablo Villamil also signed a deal with the label’s management company, Global Talent Services (GTS), with Pedro Malaver as co-manager.

Morat has been with Universal since 2014, which is when the four then college students kicked off their careers and have since collaborated with artists such as Paulina Rubio, Juanes, Sebastián Yatra, Alejandro Fernández, among others.

“With this renewal, we celebrate everything we have enjoyed and achieved, and all of the new joys that will come our way,” Morat said in a statement. “Thank you Universal and GTS for making us feel at home outside of our own country.”

Narcis Rebollo, Universal Spain and Portugal’s CEO, added: “It is an honor to renew our commitment and future as a recording company and management office for Morat, a band we’ve seen develop, grow and consolidate itself as one of the most relevant pop groups within the current Latin landscape, highlighting its great artistic quality, for both its compositions, interpretations and live performances, as well as its incredible professional and personal human quality and for the many successes and challenges we will continue to reach together.”

With more than eight million monthly listeners on Spotify, Morat is currently working on a new album, which will follow their Latin Grammy-nominated set Balas Perdidas and the A Dónde Vamos?, released last year. According to a press release, the new album’s first single is set to be released in February.

MØ Says Video for Major Lazer’s ‘Lean On’ Was ‘Cultural Appropriation, for Sure’

Major Lazer‘s blockbuster video for its 2015 smash “Lean On” is getting a second look from one of its stars. In a recent interview with Business Insider, “Lean On” vocalist MØ says the clip — which features the Danish Singer, Major Lazer, song co-producer DJ Snake and a crew of South Asian dancers performing Bollywood-style choreography — was, in retrospect, cultural appropriation.

“The video is so beautiful and amazing,” MØ says, “but I definitely think it’s cultural appropriation, for sure, and I’m so happy that people were making me aware of it, because, at the time, I didn’t really understand.”

Filmed in Vasai-Virar in the Indian state of Maharashtra, the video features Indian dancers, choreography clothing, design and architecture. The clip was filmed at myriad historical sites in the region.

“I was so excited making that video and I was so excited to be invited into Major Lazer’s visual universe because I always thought they had such a cool style,” MØ continues in the interview.

The track itself was a monster hit, becoming Spotify’s most streamed song of all time just eight months after its release, with 526 million streams, and helping fuse electronic and pop music. “Lean On” hit No. 1 in over 20 countries from Argentina to Lebanon, peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 (where it spent 48 weeks), and hit No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. It spent 23 weeks in this peak position and 61 total weeks on the chart.

In 2017, the video also made internet history when it became one of the few videos in that era to hit two billion views on YouTube.

Major Lazer, which in 2015 was made up of Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire, has long been influenced by the music and styles of global cultures. (Jillionaire was replaced in the group by Ape Drums in 2019.) The group has heavily incorporated styles of music indigenous to Brazil, the Caribbean and beyond in a catalog that dates back to 2009. Diplo’s 2008 documentary, Favela On Blast, also explored the musical subcultures of Brazil.

Upon the release of “Lean On” video, Diplo expounded on his love for India in the YouTube video’s caption, writing, “India is special and its beauty absolutely humbled me. When we toured there as Major Lazer, it was mind blowing to see our fanbase and we wanted to incorporate the attitude and positive vibes into our video and just do something that embodies the essence of Major Lazer. Major Lazer has always been a culture mashup and to us, India feels like some kind of special creature with one foot in history and one firmly in the future. The experience is something we’ll never forget.”

A representative for Major Lazer did not immediately respond to Billboard’s request for comment. With respect to incorporating music from other cultures and criticisms that this practice could be considered cultural appropriation, Diplo told The Guardian in 2018 that “I don’t … really … f–king care. What kind of music am I supposed to make? Being a white American, you have zero cultural capital, unless you’re doing Appalachian fiddle music or something.”

END And Salomon’s First Collaborative Sneaker Is Inspired By The Grueling Marathon Des Sables

With END and Salomon‘s first-ever collaboration, the two are taking the XT-Wings 2 to the Sahara desert, preparing the shoe for the Marathon Des Sables, a grueling six day footrace that takes place every year.

In name, the colorway pays homage to the “Sirocco,” a Mediterranean wind that originates in the Sahara. The palette itself, though, draws influence from the desert, as the brown tone of the mesh upper is said to emulate the sand dunes common across the landscape. Darker shades accent the side and lace unit, complementing both the aforementioned as well as the dusty, earthy finish of the sole underneath.

For a closer, detailed look at the upcoming END x Salomon XT-Wings 2, check out the provided imagery below. Currently, these are set to release on February 4th at a retail of $160 USD.

In other news, the Air Jordan 4 Infrared is expected to release May 12th.

Which Nike Running Shoe Is Right For You?

Running is one of the most accessible sports in the world. Getting started, however, may seem daunting when taking training regiments, diet and gear into account. A simple search on Google for “How to run” populates over four billion results, and while we at Sneaker News would love to help you comb through some of those findings, we’d prefer to focus on the footwear. Because there are thousands of options to choose from, we’re shining the spotlight on Nike Running’s offerings.

Soon to include the Nike ZoomX StreakFly, the brand’s catalog is expansive. Therefore, your running needs should be met without a problem not only now, but also as they evolve. World-class athletes the likes of Steve Prefontaine and Eliud Kipchoge have inspired, tested and run in some of the products Nike has released over the last 58 years – Kipchoge ran a sub-two hour marathon in the Nike AlphaFly NEXT% – so you’ll be in good company.

Before we attempt to help you figure out which Nike Running shoe is right for you, here are some things to note:

• Products featured ahead may no longer be available.
• Nike’s footwear tends to be narrow and favor neutral runners.
• “Nike React” and “Nike ZoomX” refer to foams commonly used for cushioning.
• Strike type, foot shape and personal preference should be considered.
• You probably don’t need new shoes.

As mentioned before, running is one of the most accessible sports out there. So, whatever footwear you can get your feet in should work fine. All pairs listed below, however, have helped countless athletes achieve personal bests, improve their “running economy” and minimize the general stress that the sport puts on their bodies with their weight, cushioning, lockdown methods and other design choices.

The Swoosh’s catalog currently includes more than 11 options, but we’ve landed on that number for this list as we felt it captured the perfect array of options for all running needs and price points. Given that the company is constantly updating their product line, new offerings may arise after publication, but familiar cushioning solutions and other design cues are likely to be employed.

Now, without further ado, here are 11 Nike Running shoes that might be right for you.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38

Debuted in 1983, the Nike Pegasus line has been countless runners’ “workhorse with wings,” delivering one of the most consistently reliable rides around. A breathable upper, roomy forefoot, dual-cushioning system and road-ready traction makes the Peg’s 38th iteration one of the easiest recommendations we can make to runners of all types.

• Best for: Daily training, road-running, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Nike React, Nike Zoom Air
• Specs: 10 mm drop (24mm heel, 14mm toe); 8.28 oz (W), 10.05 oz (M) weight
• MSRP: $120 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike ZoomX VaporFly NEXT% 2
Once you’ve tried the VaporFly, most other running shoes feel less exciting. If you’re not a fast forefoot striker, you may want to look elsewhere as this product really shines for those ready to take advantage of the forward propulsion enabled by the carbon fiber plate-assisted midsole. Oh, and if you’re wondering why so many competitors’ running shoes include some sort of carbon fiber, the VaporFly’s record-setting is to thank.

• Best for: Race day, pace training, faster road runs, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Nike ZoomX
• Specs: 8mm drop (40mm heel, 32mm toe); 5.8 oz (W), 6.9 oz (M) weight
• MSRP: $250 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike ZoomX StreakFly

Rooted in Nike Streak heritage, a long-standing series of products designed for race day, the StreakFly ditches the ultra-tall midsoles and carbon fiber plating for a closer-to-the-ground feel and springy thermoplastic panel. This one isn’t for the “faint of heart.”

• Best for: Race day, speed training, fast one mile to 10K runs,
• Cushioning: Nike ZoomX, Pebax plate
• Specs: 6mm drop (32mm heel, 26mm toe); 5.5 oz (W), 6.6 oz (M) weight
• MSRP: $160 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike ZoomX Invincible Run FlyKnit

With a wide last and plush Nike ZoomX foam midsole, the Invincible Run is arguably the most comfortable shoe featured here. Experienced athletes often choose this option when they’re in need of an “easy day,” but the pair has also become a go-to sneaker for people who are constantly on their feet. If you want a pillowy feeling underneath your feet, look no further.

• Best for: Long distance running, slower road runs,
• Cushioning: Nike ZoomX
• Specs: 9mm drop (36.6 heel, 27.6 toe); 8.6 oz (W), 9.8 oz (M) weight
• MSRP: $180 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike Quest 4

At quick glance, the Nike Quest 4 resembles several of the Swoosh’s top-performing running shoes. Closer inspection, however, reveals an option that trades the fanciest technologies for a budget-friendlier price point. Reliable and built-to-last, this is a solid choice for those not interested in the “latest and greatest,” marketable accoutrements.

• Best for: Daily running, road running, middle-distance running, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Textured foam
• Specs: 13.7mm drop (32.1mm heel, 18.4mm toe)
• MSRP: $75 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike React Infinity Run FlyKnit 2
Designed (and proven) to reduce running-related injuries, this shoe features a chunky slab of firm Nike React foam at the midsole. While not as bouncy as other Nike Running propositions, the Infinity Run’s design – which includes high arch support – follows a rocker shape, naturally keeping athletes moving forward.

• Best for: Daily training, treadmill running, longer-distance running, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Nike React
• Specs: 8mm drop (34mm heel, 26mm toe); 8.5 oz (W), 9.9 oz (M) weight
• MSRP: $160 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike Winflo 8
It’s difficult to compete with the Nike Winflo 8 when looking for a shoe under $100 capable of taking daily beatings while also delivering cushioning that’ll surely enable some faster paces.

• Best for: Daily training, road-running, middle-distance running, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Nike Zoom Air, Nike Cushlon
• Specs: 10mm drop
• MSRP: $90 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike Air Zoom Vomero 16

Historically marketed as the company’s “smoothest ride,” the Nike Air Zoom Vomero 16 is a compelling alternative to the Pegasus as its use of ZoomX foam provides a spongier feel than Nike React does, even after high mileage.

• Best for: Daily training, road-running, middle-distance runs, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Nike Zoom Air, Nike ZoomX
• Specs: 10mm drop (33mm heel, 23mm toe); 8.4 oz (W), 10.3 oz (M) weight
• MSRP: $150 (Buy Now On Nike, Buy Now On eBay)

Nike Air Zoom Structure 24

While significantly different from the product line that debuted in 1991, the Nike Air Zoom Structure 24 still delivers one of the brand’s most “balanced” rides.

• Best for: Daily training, middle-distance runs, neutral runners
• Cushioning: Nike Zoom Air, Compression Molded Phylon (CMP 010)
