Questlove, Will Smith & More 2022 Oscar Record-Setters

CODA won best picture at the 94th annual Academy Awards, which were presented Sunday (March 27) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The feel-good movie, directed by Siân Heder, is the third film directed by a woman to win best picture. Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao, won last year. The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, won 12 years ago.

Heder won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay, but she wasn’t even nominated for best director. CODA is the third film in the past decade to win best picture without its director being nominated for best director. It follows Argo, directed by Ben Affleck (2012); and Green Book, directed by Peter Farrelly (2018).

Prior to the past decade, only three other films in all of Oscar history had won best picture without their directors being nominated. They were: Wings, directed by William A. Wellman (1927/28); Grand Hotel, directed by Edmund Goulding (1931/32); and Driving Miss Daisy, directed by Bruce Beresford (1989). For whatever reason or combination of reasons, this trend is picking up steam.

Here are more fun facts about the 2022 Oscars.

Summer of Soul won best documentary feature: Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson won for directing the film, which makes a strong case that this concert event, held in Harlem in the summer of 1969 – the same summer as Woodstock — was unjustly overshadowed. It won the same Oscar that Woodstock won 51 years ago. Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) — the film’s full title — is the first music-themed film to win in this category since Amy, a documentary about Amy Winehouse, six years ago.

In accepting the award, an emotional Questlove noted that it was a movie that his mother, who accompanied him to the Oscars, and his late father should have been able to take him to the movie when he was five years old, but because it wasn’t released, they didn’t have that opportunity. “This is about marginalized people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain. Just know that in 2022 this is not just a 1969 story about marginalized people in Harlem,” he said, before being too overcome with emotion to continue speaking.

Encanto won best animated feature: It’s the fifth film released by Walt Disney Animation Studios to win in this category (which was introduced in 2001). It follows Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia and last year’s Soul. (This doesn’t count 10 winning films released through Pixar Animation Studios.)

Hans Zimmer won for best original score for Dune:. In so doing, he set a record. He waited longer to win his second scoring Oscar than any other composer in history. Zimmer won his first Oscar for best original score 27 years ago for The Lion King. The late Henry Mancini was the former record-holder for having waited the longest to win a second scoring Oscar. Mancini won his first for Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) and waited 21 years to win his second, for Victor/Victoria (1982).

Billie Eilish and Finneas won best original song for “No Time to Die”: They are the first siblings to win in this category since Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, who won the 1964 award for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from Mary Poppins. “No Time to Die” from the James Bond film of the same name is the third song from a Bond film to win an Oscar; the first that was written by American songwriters. The first two winners, “Skyfall” and “Writing’s on the Wall,” were both written by pairs of English writers.

Will Smith won best actor for King Richard: Smith is the fifth Black actor to win in this category – the fourth since 2000. Sidney Poitier was the first, for Lilies of the Field (1963). The pace has picked up considerably in this century with Denzel Washington winning for Training Day (2001), Jamie Foxx for Ray (2004), Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland (2006) and now Smith. The last three have won for playing a wide range of real-life characters – music legend Ray Charles, dictator Idi Amin and father and coach Richard Williams.

Smith stepped on his own widely expected moment of triumph by overreacting to a joke Chris Rock told about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Smith walked up to the stage during Rock’s remarks and appeared to slug him in the face. In his acceptance speech, Smith apologized to the Academy, but not to Rock. He also repeated something he said Denzel Washington had told him, “At your highest moment, be careful. That’s when the devil comes for you.”

Jessica Chastain won best actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye: She won for playing televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, widely mocked in her time and now seen much more sympathetically. Chastain spoke of Bakker’s strong championship of LGBTQ people, which was revolutionary in evangelical Christian circles at the time. Chastain received her first Oscar nomination for her role in the 2012 film The Help. Chastain is the fifth principal member of that cast to win an Oscar. Octavia Spencer won for that film, Emma Stone for La La Land (2016) Viola Davis for Fences (also 2016), and Allison Janney for I, Tonya (2017).

Ariana DeBose won best supporting actress for West Side Story: Rita Moreno won in the same category 60 years ago for playing the same part, Anita. This is only the third time in Oscar history that two actors have won for playing the same role in different films. Marlon Brando won best actor for playing Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972). Robert DeNiro won best supporting actor for playing the same role in The Godfather: Part II (1974).  Heath Ledger won best supporting actor for playing The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008). Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for playing the same role in Joker (2020).

Troy Kotsur won best supporting actor for CODA: He’s the second deaf actor to win an Oscar, following Marlee Matlin, who won best actress for Children of a Lesser God 35 years ago.

Jane Campion won best director for The Power of the Dog: This is the second year in a row that a woman has won in this category. As noted above, Chloé Zhao won last year for Nomadland. Only one other woman in Oscar history has won in this category. Kathryn Bigelow won 12 years ago for The Hurt Locker.

Kenneth Branagh won best original screenplay for Belfast: It’s his first Oscar, following five previous nominations – and three more this year for Belfast. Remarkably, Branagh’s eight career nominations have been in seven different categories – an Oscar record. He has been nominated, over the course of his career, for best picture, director (twice), acting (both lead and support), screenplay (both original and adapted), and short film (live action).

Will Smith Apologizes to the Academy in Best Actor Acceptance Speech After Appearing to Hit Chris Rock at 2022 Oscars

Will Smith delivered an emotional acceptance speech at the Academy Awards Sunday (March 27) after winning the best actor award for his portray of Venus and Serena Williams’ dad Richard Williams in King Richard. The win came shortly after the actor stormed the stage and appeared to hit presenter Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s alopecia, which he seemed to apologize to the academy for in his speech.

“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Smith said, seeming to allude to the viral moment, which viewers at home were unsure if it was scripted or an authentic reaction. He then mentioned some of his King Richard costars. “In this time in my life, in this moment, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world. Making this film, I got to protect Aunganue Ellis, who is one of the most strongest, most delicate people I’ve ever met. I got to protect Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], the two actresses who play Venus and Serena. I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people.”

“Now I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse. You gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business you have to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you gotta smile and pretend that’s OK,” he continued, becoming increasingly emotional, tears welling up in his eyes. “Denzel [Washington] said to me a few minutes ago, he said, ‘At your highest moment, that’s when the devil comes for you.’”

“It’s like I want to be a vessel for love. I want to say thank you to Venus and Serena Williams,” he continued as the screen suddenly cut to an image of the Oscars logo while Smith’s voice could still be heard. “I just spit. I hope they didn’t see that on TV — and the entire Williams family for entrusting me with your story. That’s what I want to do. I want to be an ambassador of that kind of love and care and concern.”

Smith then delivered his mea culpa, though without mentioning Rock. “I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to my fellow nominees,” he said, continuing to tear up. “This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people … Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father just like they said … just like they said about Richard Williams. Love will make you do crazy things.”

He concluded: “Thank you, I’m hoping the Academy invites me back.”

Pinkett-Smith wasn’t the only target of Rock’s jokes earlier in the evening. The comedian, who was presenting the award for best documentary feature, also made fun of Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz for being nominated the same evening, and joked about Denzel Washington having said “King Lear ain’t got nothing on me.”

After Smith appeared to hit Rock, the comedian remarked, “Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me,” which led the actor to demand that the comedian “keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth.”

Questlove Wins Oscar for ‘Summer of Soul’ Documentary

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is now an Academy Award winner.

The Roots drummer, music historian and filmmaker nabbed an Oscar for Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), which won the Academy Award for best documentary feature at the 2022 Oscars.

Summer of Soul, directed by Questlove, tells the unjustly forgotten story of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which included performances from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Sly & the Family Stone, Mahalia Jackson and more iconic artists operating in the ’60s, making the case that had this not been a primarily Black festival, it would have been as well remembered and celebrated as Woodstock, which took place in New York that same year.

“It’s not lost on me that the story of the Harlem Cultural Festival should have been something that my beautiful mother and my dad should have taken me to when I was five years old,” Questlove said, saluting his late father while his mother watched from the audience in tears. “This is such a stunning moment for me right now. But it’s not about me. It’s about marginalized people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain.”

Questlove, overcome by emotion during the moment, continued. “Just know in 2022, this is not just a 1969 story about marginalized people in Harlem. This is a story of… I’m sorry, I’m just overwhelmed right now,” Questlove said, breaking off while making a point on how Black cultural institutions and expressions are still undervalued and ignored in contemporary pop culture.

“I’m gonna get myself together and thank everyone proper when I get offstage,” Questlove said as Beyonce clapped and his mom cried.

Billie Eilish & FINNEAS Bring Moody ‘No Time to Die’ to 2022 Oscars

Seven-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish and eight-time Grammy winner FINNEAS (her brother and collaborator) have plenty of accolades already, but both admitted they were wildly nervous on the red carpet for the 2022 Academy Awards. And while it was understandable – both were slated to perform during the 2022 Oscars telecast at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and were nominated for best original song – they needn’t have worried.

Following an introduction from Rami Malek (who plays the villain in the latest James Bond film No Time to Die and also won the best actor Oscar for portraying Freddie Mercury in the Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody), the O’Connell siblings began playing the understated, moody intro of “No Time to Die,” the title track to the most recent Bond film.

Wearing a loose-fitting black suit while sitting on a stool, Billie opened the ballad in hushed tones as FINNEAS played along on the piano behind her and occasionally added backup vocals. The two were accompanied by a string section that gradually ramped up the drama, but never threatened to overtake Billie’s melancholy, wounded vocals as she was bathed in shadows and piercing white lights.

Not long after, Eilish and FINNEAS returned to the stage when “No Time to Die” won the Oscar for best original song. Billie Eilish, ecstatic and beside herself with laughter, thanked her “007 family” and “Johnny Marr for taking our song and making it worthy of James Bond.” FINNEAS thanked his and Billie’s parents: “We love you as parents and we love you as real people too.”

Eilish is also nominated for seven Grammys at the upcoming ceremony in Las Vegas on April 3.

Billie Eilish & Finneas’ ‘No Time to Die’ Wins Oscar for Best Original Song

Billie Eilish and Finneas won an Oscar for “No Time to Die” from the James Bond film of the same name on Sunday (March 27). They are the first siblings to win in this category since Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, who won the 1964 award for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from Mary Poppins.

“No Time to Die” is the third Bond song to win an Oscar; the first that was written by American songwriters. The first two winners, “Skyfall” and “Writing’s on the Wall,” were both written by pairs of English writers.

Eilish, 20, is the second-youngest winner ever in the category, trailing only Markéta Irglová, who was four days shy of turning 20 when she won in February 2008 for co-writing “Falling Slowly” from Once. Eilish might have become the youngest winner ever in this category if COVID hadn’t happened and No Time to Die had come out on schedule in 2020. If that had happened, she might have won the award at the Oscars in their usual time slot in late February 2021, when she was 19 and two months.

In accepting the award, both siblings were plainly thrilled. “This is so unbelievable, I could scream,” Eilish said. She thanked Hans Zimmer, who provided the orchestral arrangement, and guitarist Johnny Marr “for taking our song and making it worthy of James Bond.”

Finneas paid a lovely compliment to their parents. “We love you as parents and as real people too.”

Oscar voters were slow to embrace songs from James Bond films, but they’ve since made up for lost time. No Time to Die is the third consecutive Bond film to yield an Oscar-winning song. It follows Skyfall (Adele’s title song, which she co-wrote with Paul Epworth) and Spectre (Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall,” which he co-wrote with Jimmy Napes).

Eilish performs “No Time to Die” on the film’s soundtrack. The song won a Grammy for best song written for visual media in March 2021.

“No Time to Die” was the highest-charting Hot 100 hit of this year’s best original song nominees. It debuted and peaked at No. 16 in February 2020.

The other nominees in the category were “Be Alive” from King Richard (music and lyric by Dixson and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter); “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto (music and lyric by Lin-Manuel Miranda); “Down to Joy” from Belfast (music and lyric by Van Morrison); and “Somehow You Do” from Four Good Days (music and lyric by Diane Warren).

All of the songs except “Down to Joy” were performed on the Oscar telecast. Eilish and Finneas performed “No Time to Die,” Beyoncé performed “Be Alive,” Sebastián Yatra performed “Dos Oruguitas,” and Reba McEntire performed “Somehow You Do.”

Miranda would have become an EGOT if he had won. At 42, he has plenty of time to join that elite club, which currently consists of 16 members.

The 2022 Oscars returned to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood after being shifted to Los Angeles’ Union Station last year because of the pandemic.

Here’s the Will Smith & Chris Rock Moment at the 2022 Oscars Everyone Is Debating

Amidst the glitz, glamor and awards given out during Sunday evening’s Oscars (March 27), there was one moment that had the audience’s jaws on the floor — when Will Smith appeared to smack Chris Rock in the face on live television.

Presenting the award for best documentary feature, Rock was on stage throwing some jokes out at the celebrities in the audience. He made a jab at Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz for being nominated on the same night, as well as joking that Denzel Washington as Macbeth had said “King Lear ain’t got nothing on me.”

But the comment that seemed to set things off was when he looked over to Jada Pinkett-Smith and said, “Jada, I love you, G.I Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” seemingly referring to the actress’s bald head. Pinkett-Smith previously opened up about living with alopecia — an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss — in 2018, and more recently in a December Instagram video.

After Rock’s joke, Smith walked up to where the comedian was standing on stage, and appeared to punch Rock in the face. While Rock exclaimed and continued laughing at the joke, the audio cut out for American audiences. Uncensored clips of the moment quickly began showing up online, where Rock said, “Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me.”

As Rock tried to continue his speech, Smith — back in his seat — began yelling at Rock to “keep my wife’s name out your f–king mouth.” While the comedian continued to assure him that he would, and that “it was a G.I. Jane joke,” Smith got angrier, and yelled the same sentence much louder.

This is not the first time that Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett-Smith have clashed over his comments at the Oscars. When Rock hosted in 2016 and Pinkett-Smith was boycotting the event over the “Oscars So White” controversy, Rock joked at the event, “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.” She later responded, “Hey, look, it comes with the territory. We gotta keep it moving.”

Travis Scott performs for first time since 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy

Travis Scott has performed live for the first time since the crowd crush tragedy at his 2021 Astroworld Festival, which killed 10 and left many others injured.

As reported by TMZ, Scott delivered a short set at a private pre-Oscars party on Saturday night (March 26). The Bel Air event was reportedly attended by a host of celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Venus and Serena Williams, Tobey Maguire, Kaia Gerber and more.

Scott’s brief performance was reportedly a combination of rapping and DJing, with footage from the party showing him delivering his 2018 hit ‘Sicko Mode’. It follows on from months of speculation that he may be preparing to play live shows again, including fan theories that he’ll be on the bill for this year’s Rolling Loud in Miami.

The rapper is still facing hundreds of lawsuits from the tragic events that unfolded at Astrowrold in Houston last year. Some 300 people were injured and 10 died as a result, with the cause ruled as compression asphyxia by the medical examiner.

Families of the victims and others who were injured are seeking billions in damages from the rapper and the festival’s promoters Live Nation, among others. The US’ House Oversight and Reform Committee has also launched a bipartisan investigation into Live Nation over their planning around potential safety hazards at the festival.

Scott gave his first public interview about the tragedy in December last year, where he said: “Fans come to the show to have a good experience and I have a responsibility to figure out what happened here. I have a responsibility to figure out a solution.”

Families of several victims criticised his statements, saying he was avoiding taking responsibility for the incident. Half also rejected his offer to cover funeral expenses.

Earlier this month, Scott announced he’d be launching a new initiative called Project HEAL through his Cactus Jack Foundation, putting $5million into community-based initiatives including “tech-driven solutions for event safety”.

Megan Thee Stallion Brings the Fire to ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ at 2022 Oscars

The Family Madrigal may not be too keen on speaking about their oft-maligned member Bruno, but at the 2022 Oscars, the cast of Encanto certainly had plenty to say — with some help from superstar guest Megan Thee Stallion.

During Sunday evening’s ceremony (March 27), five members of the film’s cast — comprised of Adassa, Stephanie Beatriz, Mauro Castillo, Carolina Gaitán and Diane Guerrero — offered their first-ever live performance of the Billboard chart-topping song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” Introduced by John Leguizamo — who scolded them for not letting him sing — Gaitán appeared in the audience with a guitarist, with her five fellow cast members eventually joining her, walking through the crowd.

But in a sudden surprise twist, the camera panned to reveal Megan Thee Stallion, standing in a brilliant gold dress and ready to give viewers a brand new version of the chart-topping song. Adding her own new verse to the tune, Megan rapped about the three funny women hosting — Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, as well as Zendaya — before eventually declaring that she was ready for a statue of her own. “Believe I’m up next/ I’m coming for that gold,” she spit directly into the camera. “You can add it to my shelf/ Academy Award”

As the stage opened up behind Megan, stars Becky G and Luis Fonsi suddenly appeared onstage surrounded by a bevy of dancers in multicolored outfits, as they offered up their own altered lyrics of the song’s opening verse, singing about the Oscars ceremony around them. Eventually, everyone joined them in singing, “We’re here to celebrate Oscar,” in place of the song’s title.

Before even making it to the Oscars, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” already made history earlier this year, when it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks. “Bruno” became the second song from a Disney film to ever top the chart, and the first time in 29 years that a soundtrack and corresponding song topped both the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200, since Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and the rest of The Bodyguard‘s soundtrack topped both charts in 1992 and 1993.

“Bruno” was not the only Encanto performance at the 2022 Oscars — Sebastian Yatra took to the stage earlier in the evening to perform the emotional Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” from the film. Up for best original song, “Oruguitas” is composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s second chance to earn an EGOT since his song “How Far I’ll Go” from the Disney film Moana was nominated in 2017.

New ‘Kardashians’ Trailer Premieres During 2022 Oscars: Watch

The newest trailer for Hulu’s The Kardashians teases more of what fans will see this season, which debuts on Hulu on April 14.

The latest 30-second clip, which aired during Sunday night’s (March 27) Oscars, shows glimpses of footage from Kourtney Kardashian’s engagement to Travis Barker, Kylie Jenner’s recent pregnancy and Kim Kardashian’s relationship with ex-husband Kanye West.

It also touches upon a little Vogue cover family drama.

A previous trailer for the show revealed that Kourtney and Travis are ready to have a baby together, and hinted that Kim would be addressing her romance with SNL star Pete Davidson — so it seems there’s plenty of dramatic material to come this season.
