Travis Rudolph Found Not Guilty In Murder Trial

Travis Rudolph, who appeared in seven NFL games in 2017 was arrested on suspicion of murder in 2021. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder after a shooting at a residence in Lake Park, Florida. According to investigators, a group of individuals visited Rudolph to confront him about domestic violence allegations. In response, Rudolph allegedly opened fire on the group with an AR-15-style pistol. One person was killed and another was injured.

While Rudolph did not deny that he had opened fire on the group, his lawyers attempted to have the charges thrown out under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. However, the motion was denied and Rudolph was arraigned to face trial. During the trial, texts from Rudolph’s ex-girlfriend showed that she had asked her brother and his friends to “shoot up” Rudolph’s house.

Jury Finds Rudolph Not Guilty

On June 7, after a two-week trial, a jury found Travis Rudolph not guilty on all charges. Emotions were tense in the courtroom before the jury delivered their verdict. The family of Sebastian Jean Jacques, the man who died during the incident, declined to speak with the media. Meanwhile, Rudolph’s sister said “It means freedom. It means truth. God has set us free, and they have the truth now. The world has seen everything, and now it’s up to the jury to make the decision.”

During the trial, Rudolph testified that four men, Keishaun Jones, Tyler Robinson, Chris Lowe, and Sebastian Jean-Jacques, came over to his house on April 7, 2021 to physically hurt or kill him. Jones and Robinson had both received the text messages from Rudolph’s ex-girlfriend, who allegedly sought revenge for Rudolph’s alleged infidelity. Jones was the brother of the ex-girlfriend. As the decision was read, Rudolph was embraced by his family, finally free after over two years of dealing with this complex legal case. The jury returned a verdict after just two hours of deliberation. During the past two years, Rudolph had spent time in both jail and under house arrest. One of the first things to happen after the verdict was the removal of an ankle monitor.

Black Music Month: Remembering Heavy D, The “Overweight Lover” Of Hip Hop

Heavy D was not just a rapper but a charming storyteller who laced his lyrics with positivity and joy. Born in Mandeville, Jamaica, as Dwight Myers, Heavy D migrated to The Bronx, New York, with his family as a child. He was just eight when he decided that the world of hip-hop was his destiny.

Growing up in Mount Vernon, Heavy D immersed himself in the vibrant world of hip-hop, which was just beginning to find its footing in mainstream culture. Inspired by this emerging genre, he and his high-school friends, DJ Eddie F, Trouble T. Roy, and G-Wiz, formed Heavy D & the Boyz, a foundational pillar of the New Jack Swing era.

Climbing The Ladder Of Success

Heavy D’s success wasn’t an overnight story; it resulted from relentless dedication. His career took off in 1987 with the release of Living Large, an album that propelled him into the limelight. The album’s blend of reggae, R&B, and hip-hop vibes resonated with the audience, setting the stage for Heavy D’s multi-genre influence.

His influence spanned across eras, making him a crucial player in various music periods. Heavy D left his mark from New Jack Swing to the Golden Era. “Now That We Found Love,” a track from his 1991 album, Peaceful Journey, became a Top 5 Billboard hit and remains a party anthem today. In the ’90s, the rapper continued his winning streak with Blue Funk and Nuttin’ But Love. The latter became his best-selling album, earning a Platinum certification. Additionally, he earned himself a Soul Train Music Award for Best Rap Single in 1990.

His versatility extended beyond music. Heavy D successfully ventured into television and film, with notable roles in popular shows like Living Single. However, he was not just an entertainer but a beacon of positivity in a genre often associated with aggression. His lyricism reflected his personal ethos – an attitude of love, respect, and upbeat energy. This earned him the nickname the “Overweight Lover,” symbolizing his big heart and irresistible charm.

The Death Of A Legend

On November 8, 2011, the world bid farewell to an icon. He passed away due to a pulmonary embolism, but his legacy continues to shine in music and beyond. His impact on the hip-hop scene is undeniable. Through his music, he opened doors for future generations of rappers, showing them that success could be achieved without resorting to violent themes. He also inspired other artists, influencing the music of modern performers. Heavy D was also a mentor, fostering the careers of several artists, including Soul For Real and Monifah.

We remember Heavy D for more than his music. He embodied an ethos of love, respect, and positivity. In a world where negativity often takes center stage, Heavy D chose a different path – one of joy and exuberance. His music reflected his personality – full of life, love, and unbridled enthusiasm.

Heavy D was more than a rapper – he was an icon, a pioneer, and a lover of life. As we look back on his life, we celebrate not just his achievements but the indomitable spirit that made Heavy D, the “Overweight Lover,” an unforgettable figure in the annals of hip-hop.

MM6 Maison Margiela Transforms The Salomon XT-4 Into A Mule

Regardless of function and purpose, footwear quickly becomes all about aesthetic whenever fashion determines it vogue. And there’s arguably no better an example of this than MM6 Maison Margiela‘s upcoming collaboration with Salomon.

Though a hiking shoe by design, the Salomon XT-4’s upcoming collaboration with MM6 Maison Margiela sees the sneaker stray quite a bit away from the trail. The diffusion label — often described as a more affordable sibling to the mainline — has simply chopped off the heels of the staple model, turning it from a piece of utility into a fashionable pair of mules. In addition to this, MM6 has also stamped the toe box with the number-heavy graphic found on the labels of their clothing.

Pictured in multiple colorways, the MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon XT-4 is expected to release in time for Spring/Summer ’23. More details should be unveiled soon, so sit tight and stay tuned for updates.

In other news, Salehe Bembury recently unveiled his latest offering with Crocs: the Pollex Clog Horchata.

Doe Boy Thanks Ja Rule And J-Lo For Finally Clearing Sample

Sampling is an often controversial part of making music. It’s gotten even more heated in recent years when artists have faced lawsuits just because their music sounds too much like someone else’s. So for artists to protect themselves, clearing a sample is absolutely essential. For Doe Boy, the process of getting a sample cleared took a lot longer than anticipated. His new song “Way I Walk” dropped a few days ago. According to Doe Boy himself, it took 12 months to clear a sample for use in the song.

A popular remix of Jennifer Lopez’s 2001 song “I’m Real” is an essential piece of Doe Boy’s new track. After a very long process of trying to get his sample of the song cleared, Doe Boy was finally able to release his own track. He recently posted a video thanking both J-Lo and Ja-Rule for their help getting it cleared. “Thank you J.Lo, I appreciate it. I been begging yo a*s for a year, we finally made it happen,” he says.

He also posted on his Instagram to celebrate and promote the new song. “Everybody say THANK YOU @jlo. ‘WAY I WALK’ finally cleared,” he says in the caption. “Way I Walk” is the second new single Doe Boy has released this year following “Roll The Dice” with Dej Loaf. The song also got its own music video which has racked up over 100k views in just a few days.

Doe Boy had an even busier 2022 dropping two projects and dozens of features. His 19-track album OH REALLY came out earlier in the year and sports features from Lil Uzi Very, Ty Dolla $ign, Roddy Rich, and many more. He followed it up with his CATCH ME IF YOU CAN EP earlier this year. He also joined Smiley in the features list of Killy’s Crazy Life Of Sin EP later in the year. What do you think about Doe Boy’s new song and how long it took him to clear the sample? Let us know your thoughts on the song and sampling in general in the comments below.

The Fugees’ Reunion Was A Shock To Pras

Following the Fugees’ recent reunion at the 2023 Roots Picnic, sources shared some behind-the-scenes info with TMZ Hip Hop. A representative for Pras revealed that the performance came as a surprise to the artist, who is currently awaiting sentencing for recent charges of conspiracy and fraud. The source also shared that the trio didn’t have an opportunity to rehearse prior to the last-minute performance, which featured six songs from their 1996 LP, The Score. Many fans speculated that the reunion could have been the last they saw of the Fugees for a while, however, sources suggest they “stay tuned!!!”

In April, Pras was found guilty of 10 charges surrounding an alleged international conspiracy plot. Though he has not yet been sentenced, his charges could leave him spending over 20 years behind bars. “We are extremely disappointed in that result. But are very, very confident in the ultimate outcome of this case,” Pras’ lawyer David Kenner stated following the verdict. “If we do move to a sentencing hearing I remain very confident we will certainly appeal this case. This is not over.”

Pras’ Legal Battle

In August of last year, the Fugees canceled their scheduled reunion tour, citing COVID-19 as the cause. The cancelation came amid Pras’ legal trouble, leading to speculation that it had more to do with the artist’s legal battle than the group was letting on. Amid the battle, Pras has also faced accusations that he was an FBI informant. He has continuously shot down the allegations.

“Look, I was never in the past, present, or future an FBI or a CIA informant. Never ever. If people want to check it out, look at the testimonies. They could see that all within the records, and all the DC courts,” he stated last month. He also said, “This is not a Tekashi 6ix9ine situation, respectfully.” “Because he admitted he was an informant, basically. So I was never. I never said I was,” Pras claims, “I am not now and never will be an FBI or a CIA informant.”

Shaquille O’Neal And Brittany Renner Spotted At Dinner

NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal was gong to dinner with fitness model and Instagram influencer Brittany Renner. Shaq’s dating history has always been a little bit of a mystery. He was long associated with film marketer Shaunie O’Neal, whom he married in 1996. However, the couple divorced in 2007, something that Shaq blamed on former Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant. Most recently, Shaq was seen with actress Annie Ilonzeh.

Meanwhile, Renner, who has five million followers on Instagram, has a long history of dating athletes. Her partners include Colin Kaepernick, Ben Simmons, James Harden, and P.J. Washington. Furthermore, she has also been linked with the likes of Lil Uzi Vert, Drake, Chris Brown, and Trey Songz. Her relationship with Washington, who plays for the Charlotte Hornets, is her most notable one. Renner and Washington have a son together, who was born in 2021. However, the pair split in 2022.

Shaq Denies Renner Dinner Was A Date

Footage obtained by TMZ showed Shaq and Renner arriving at a Beverly Hills hotel for dinner around 6pm on June 5. The meal reportedly lasted around two hours, with both diners in good spirits. Afterward, the pair left separately around 8pm. However, sources from both camps have told TMZ in the strongest terms that the pair are not dating. Instead, they have been friends for some time and were merely catching up over dinner. Reportedly, it was reiterated several times to TMZ that the dinner was purely platonic.

However, another connection does exist between the pair. Despite this, sources told TMZ that no cameras appeared to be present for Renner’s dinner with the producer’s ex-husband. Big L: All About The Respected New York Emcee

On May 30th, Big L would’ve turned 49 years old. In honor of the iconic Harlem rapper, we’re looking back on the career and its impact in the hip-hop scene. As Eminem put it, “Take some Big and some ’Pac/And you mix ’em up in a pot/Sprinkle a lil’ Big L on top/What the f**k do you got?” If not for his unfortunate passing, there’s no doubt that Big L would consistently be on the shortlist of the greatest rappers of all time. Still, his legacy is one of a rapper’s rapper who was able to spar with any MC, bar-for-bar. During his short career, he released one album and a brief collection of singles. However, you would be remised to find him outside of the top 10 on all-time lists for a good reason.

Big L was tragically shot and killed on Feb. 15th in the area he famously referred to as “The Danger Zone” — 139th St. and Lenox Ave in Harlem. Named Lamont Coleman, he grew up as a relative outcast on his block, where violence and drug abuse grew rampant. Still, his aunt, Gilda “Pinky” Terry, raised him as her own son and ensured that he still experienced childhood. The family was just wealthy enough to occasionally travel, taking the kids out to places such as Walt Disney World in Florida. In addition, her outgoing personality was the host and star of Harlem block parties.

Big L And Jay Z Had A Rap Battle

CHICAGO – APRIL 01: Rapper Big L performs at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois on April 1, 1995. (Photo By Raymond Boyd/Getty Images)

Although Big L already had a penchant for rhyming since a young age, experiencing Run D.M.C. live was a game-changer. His older brother, Donald Phinazee, took him to the King Of Rock tour in 1985, which planted the seed for L’s own foray into hip-hop. Their mom eventually bought DJ equipment for Don and Big L, who would serve as the MC on the block.

As Damon Dash put it with Complex, “He was known as Big L the Rapper. He always was nice. He was the guy in Harlem that was the best rapper on Lenox. There wasn’t nobody else but Big L.” By Big L’s teenage years, that reputation had sprouted from the block to New York City as a whole.

While Big L was a mellow and introverted personality, he hit a creative lightbulb when he got on the mic. Jay-Z heard of his notoriety in the Harlem scene, even challenging him to a rap battle on the block. With the battle reportedly being a tie, it wasn’t long until major labels were calling about Big L. Without a mixtape or even a demo tape, he captured the excitement of managers by dropping verses in person. By 1992, he had signed a deal with Colombia Records, who also had the likes of Nas under their wing.

Big L’s Debut Album Released In 1995

After releasing a slew of singles that depicted the realities of Harlem life amidst grim horrorcore production, Big L came out with his debut studio album Lifestylez Ov da Poor & Dangerous. The 1995 release was long overdue, as he was already a well-known MC at this point. Fat Joe went as far as to tell Vibe, “People can get mad at me for saying this, but he was the best lyricist at the time. He was a better lyricist than Biggie and Jay-Z. He just didn’t have the marketing and promotion. Let me go on the record and say that. It’s the truth.”

However, Big L was far more than exclusively a skilled lyricist. He was looking to steer the direction of hip-hop in a unique direction. After Columbia Records dropped him after his debut album, he began to explore going independent with the launch of Flamboyant Entertainment. The two parties parted ways due to “creative differences.” Still, what came after became an integral part of L’s story. Feeling that the genre was devolved into a repetitive sampling of hits and redundant subject matter, he had a steadfast vision of changing the landscape of hip-hop. In many ways, he was able to do just that while only releasing one non-posthumous album. He was able to identify new talent, proving his ear for talent was just as strong as his penmanship, as seen with the launch of Children Of The Corn — a group consisting of Big L, Ma$e, Cam’ron, Bloodshed, and McGruff.

He Was Murdered At Only 24 Years Old

Tragically, Big L was murdered in his native Harlem neighborhood on February 15, 1999. Gerard Woodley, one of his childhood friends, was arrested for the crime. However, he would later be released due to a lack of evidence regarding the drive-by shooting. Nearly 17 years after the shooting, Woodley himself was shot and killed. While there’s a great deal of controversy regarding the slew of tragedies, there is no doubt that rapper Big L’s death at the mere age of 24 cut one of the greatest hip-hop careers to date brutally short.
