Two Shot Dead at Georgia’s Freaknik Music Festival

Investigators are searching for culprits in shootings that killed two people at a music festival in east central Georgia.

Local news outlets report the shooting in Sandersville killed William Mykell Lowery, 17, and Christopher “Scooter” Dunn, 30.

Both men were attending a Freaknik festival at a local park. Freaknik was once a spring break festival in Atlanta attended by students at historically Black colleges and universities. But the name is now used by music promoters for dances, concerts and events nationwide. Sandersville is about 100 miles (165 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta.

Witnesses said the shooting sparked a stampede.

“You just heard gunshots go off and then the whole crowd just started running. Everybody just started hiding behind cars and stuff and a lot of folks were rushing out with cars because the whole field was packed,” Timothy Pace told WJBF-TV.

Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran told WMAZ-TV that the first deputy arrived to find as many as a thousand people attending.

“Once he got there to the location, more shots were being fired. He radioed for assistance and there, far out, he found a victim that had been shot. We later found out that another person had been shot and was driven to the hospital by a civilian,” Cochran said.

Pace said the crowded event had little security and no one checking for weapons.

Cochran’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are handling the inquiry.

JoJo Siwa’s XOMG POP Goes Off Like a ‘Mini Explosion’ on ‘AGT’: Watch

America’s Got Talent is back on our screens, and, for Tuesday night’s (May 31) season 17 premiere, XOMG POP provided all the screams.

XOMG POP was founded by JoJo Siwa and mom Jessalynn, both of whom stood in the wings as the sparkly girl group lit up the room with an original song, “Candy Hearts.”

“I’m guessing this is about world domination,” Simon Cowell said ahead of the performance. He was only half kidding.

The energetic routine was slick and colorful and had the youngsters in the audience grooving along.

This wasn’t just the kick-off of AGT, it will be remembered for the debut presentation of Siwa’s new project.

“Wow, that’s how you do it,” Cowell enthused afterwards.

“You should have your own show, you should be touring, and I think that’s exactly what you’re going to do,” fellow judge Howie Mandel remarked.

“That was so much fun. Every little girl in America is gonna go crazy when they see you on AGT,” Sofia Vergara added.

Cowell didn’t like it, however. He loved it. “What’s there to not like about you. Your energy, your enthusiasm. It was like a mini explosion,” he said. “I’m really, really, really excited and happy that you came to audition for us.

And with this, the troupe scored four “yeses” and they progress to the next round.

There’s also a charitable aspect to the Jonas Brothers’ Scriber partnership; according to a press release, more than half the band’s proceeds ($2 per subscription) will go to yet-to-be-announced charitable organizations selected by the group. “There’s no app to download, no website to visit, no email to have to find,” said Scriber CEO Brian Goldsmith in a statement. “We cut through the clutter to deliver subscription videos and rewards in a way that captures the attention of subscribers.”

Creators can choose how much to charge their subscribers, with rates starting as low as $4.99 per month. The press release notes that Scriber distributes subscriber rewards using the blockchain and has a patent pending on its “one-click playing” technology. Creators retain copyright ownership over the video content they distribute using the service.

The concept of connecting creators, artists, politicians and brands to their audiences via direct message has been gaining prominence over the last few years, as companies like Community and Laylo have partnered with notable figures in multiple spheres, including Stacey Abrams, McDonald’s and Dixie D’Amelio. Though Scriber is entering this space later than its competitors, its business model differs in one key area. While Community and Laylo are paid for by the celebrities who utilize those platforms, Scriber asks fans to pay a monthly fee (7-day free trial, $4.99 per month) to gain exclusive access to their favorite stars as part of a quasi fan club.

Scriber’s focus on exclusivity, fan building and finding new revenue sources for artists also echoes messaging previously popularized by Web3 start-ups. Blockchain-based companies such as Rally ask fans to buy crypto tokens from their favorite celebrities in exchange for access to gated Discord servers and special fan experiences. Scriber, however, keeps its technology humble: Anyone with a cell phone number and a credit card can join. Also, unlike popular forms of token-gated fan clubs in Web3, Scriber provides a much simpler connection to the artist — no community building involved.

In a statement, Nick Jonas described Scriber as a way to “share something truly special with [fans], while also finding even more ways to give back to causes close to our hearts.” Joe Jonas added that they love “surprising fans” and that the fan club will be “a win-win” for everyone, while Kevin Jonas said it’s always “so special” to “connect directly with our fans” — a feat now made easier with Scriber’s texting-based platform.

“Having been in the media business for years, I’ve seen the powerful connection between creators and their fans,” added Goldsmith. “We’re proud to provide artists a new way to share the content that they love to make –and that their most passionate followers want to see before anyone else. The subscriber experience can include special access and rewards to help build a community of superfans. We’re also happy that Scriber can support causes meaningful to our creators.”

U.S. residents can subscribe to the Jonas Brothers on Scriber by texting GO to 1-844-228-4544.

Charlie Puth Shares the Story Behind Losing His Virginity at 21

For his new interview with Bustle published on Tuesday (May 31), Charlie Puth was an open book, sharing his journey to finding his musical sound, the photos on his Raya dating profile and the story behind losing his virginity.

Yes, the “Light Switch” singer revealed that he had sex for the first time when he was 21 years old, after playing a small gig in Boston. “This girl came up to me and was like, ‘Can you sign my chest?’ I was like, I feel like a rock star,” he told the publication. “I never saw her again. She was lovely, but it makes me sad sometimes because I wish the older version of me was like, ‘Hey, you might want to just make this like a little more memorable.’”

That wasn’t the only NSFW story Puth told. He also revealed that the first song he ever “jerked off to” was Maroon 5‘s 2002 hit, “This Love.” “Now I’m good friends with Adam Levine,” he added. “[I told him] and he was like, ‘That’s really weird.’”

For him, sex and music are intertwined. “This is a really weird sentence, but if you took the instrumental only of my music, I want people to almost get turned on by the frequency,” he explained, revealing that he can’t listen to music while having sex. “I will analyze the music playing in the background and I’ll start to see the music notes in my head and I will not be able to get hard.”

Read the full interview here. Puth is currently working on self-titled third album, Charlie, which will feature recently released singles “Light Switch” and “That’s Hilarious.”

Noah Cyrus Recreates Throwback Paparazzi Video of Her & Miley Cyrus

Back before Noah Cyrus was an artist in her own right, she was the adorable baby sister of then-Disney Channel star Miley Cyrus, and would often appear walking alongside the “7 Things” singer in paparazzi videos.

In a video uploaded to TikTok on Monday (May 30), Noah recreates one of those throwback paparazzi videos, in which she’s seen at the post office with Miley and their mom, Tish. In the clip, a young, blonde haired Noah watches as a fan takes a photo of her older sister on a flip phone — and proceeds to stare, cross armed, as the fan walks away.

Cyrus has been open about how living with a famous sister and father (Billy Ray Cyrus) affected her upbringing. Back in 2020, for in tmrw magazine’s The Mischief Issue, the “Lonely” singer cited being called “Hannah Montana’s sister” and other names that weren’t her own. “Somebody not even coming up to you and calling you by your name?” the youngest Cyrus said. “That’s going to really f— you up as a kid, make you feel like you don’t f—ing even matter to the population — for them to not even know your name.”

Noah described a long list of misconceptions attached to her famous name, including having an impermeable shield against harmful comments, but she painfully felt the impact of those words hurled at her even from across a computer or phone screen. “I think what’s weird about people on the Internet is that they think if you have a well-known last name that whatever they say to you may not hurt your feelings or that whatever they say about you couldn’t possibly make its way to you or hurt you,” she told tmrw. “There’s no mercy from people who see you only as public. I would say what bothers me the most is that people think that they can just say whatever the f— they want, and it doesn’t really have a consequence to it or it doesn’t affect anything ‘cause it’s said over the internet. There’s so much power to the internet. Whether you’re well-known or not, it still f—ing hurts somebody so bad to read the s— that I’ve been reading since I was so young. So many people get that every day, and it’s so f—ed up, man.”

The 22-year-old star is set to release her new LP, The Hardest Part, on July 15 via RECORDS/Columbia.
