Watch Big Thief perform ‘Certainty’ on ‘The Late, Late Show’

Big Thief took to The Late, Late Show With James Corden to perform ‘Certainty’ last night – check it out below.

READ MORE: Big Thief – ‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You’ review: a new chapter

‘Certainty’ is taken from Big Thief’s fifth album ‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You’, which was released in February.

The performance on Corden rounds off a hat trick of late night American talk show appearances, with the band using the same living room practice space to air  ‘Spud Infinity’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and ‘Simulation Swarm‘ on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Watch ‘Certainty’ below:

Big Thief are currently touring North America ahead of a string of UK and European festivals, including Glastonbury, Primavera Sound, Best Kept Secret and Tempelhof Sounds. You can find the band’s full live schedule here.

In a video message to fans though, frontwoman Adrianne Lenker has asked fans to stop talking through their support acts’ sets.

“It’s really come forward in the last few days that: when music is happening in a room, there’s a performer on stage playing and doing their craft, when you enter into that space, try to be mindful of what’s happening and pay attention and don’t talk,” she said.

Hello. We are now contributing 1% of our gross touring income to @earthpercentorg, including income from last year’s US tour. We are grateful to be part of this group which will grant $ to organizations fighting the climate emergency in the most impactful ways. pic.twitter.com/ebiAHNmMa3

— Big Thief (@bigthiefmusic) February 3, 2022

Big Thief have also pledged to contribute one per cent of their touring income to tackling the climate crisis, partnering with Brian Eno‘s EarthPercent organisation.

“The hope is that something like this could spread to our peers, especially those making money and maybe even become a standard for artists and those around the music industry (labels, DSPs, publishers, managers, booking agents, etc).”

Big Thief were the first band to perform on The Late, Late Show after host James Corden announced he would be leaving next year.

“When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey—an adventure,” he said. “I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there.”

New ‘Barbie’ film will not include Aqua’s track ‘Barbie Girl’

The forthcoming Barbie film will not include Aqua’s 1997 hit ‘Barbie Girl’, it’s been reported.

Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Pictures shared the first-look image of Margot Robbie in character as Barbie for the new live-action movie.

Robbie will star alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken, and a wider ensemble cast including Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Sex Education stars Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera and more.

According to Variety, Barbie will not feature the Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group’s novelty single as part of its official soundtrack.

The publication noted that many fans have insisted that ‘Barbie Girl’ – which has registered over a billion streams on YouTube – should appear in the Mattel/Warner Bros. film. However, Variety said it understands that there are no plans for this to happen.

Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen, who manages Aqua lead singer Lene Nystrøm, told the outlet: “The song will not be used in the movie.”

While there isn’t currently a known reason for the track’s apparent absence, there’s previously been disputes between Aqua and US toy company Mattel, who created and own the Barbie brand.

The firm filed a lawsuit against MCA Records (now part of Universal Music), which distributed ‘Barbie Girl’ in the US, for trademark infringement. Mattel took issue with the song’s suggestive lyrics, fearing they could harm Barbie’s image.

In the filing, the company claimed that Aqua’s tune featured “a promiscuous Barbie doll sing[ing] in a flirtatious tone” alongside a “licentious Ken doll respond[ing] ‘kiss me here, touch me there’.”

MCA Records responded by claiming the song was a parody protected by the First Amendment, and filed their own lawsuit for defamation over statements that a Mattel spokesperson made as part of the lawsuit.

The United States District Court in California dismissed both parties’ claims: “Mattel’s statements were non-actionable hyperbole,” it said, claiming that ‘Barbie Girl was a parody, “poking fun at both her and the plastic values she represents”.

‘Barbie Girl’ sold over 1.4 million copies in the US and stayed at Number One in the UK singles chart for four weeks.

Directed by Gerwig and co-written by Noah Baumbach, Barbie will be released in cinemas on July 21, 2023.

Listen to a preview of Pale Waves upcoming new single ‘Lies’

Pale Waves have announced a new single called ‘Lies’ – you can check out a teaser below.

The Manchester band confirmed late last year that they had finished their third studio album, which will follow on from 2021’s ‘Who Am I?’.

Heather Baron-Gracie and co. subsequently debuted an unreleased track called ‘Jealousy’ on their UK headline tour in February. Baron-Gracie told fans at the time that a new single would arrive in the next few weeks, though it’s yet to materialise.

Pale Waves have now confirmed on their official website that they’ll release ‘Lies’ on May 9 – you can sign up to receive more information here.

The group shared two previews of the forthcoming tune on their official TikTok account this week. “You called it love but it never had a feeling/ Ripped out my heart and left it bleeding,” frontwoman Baron-Gracie sings over the cut.

In the caption of both videos, the group posted the hashtag #newmusic. Watch here:

In another recent TikTok upload, Baron-Gracie explained how she’d experienced “writer’s block” while Pale Waves were recording their third studio effort. “[I] ended up writing a whole song about Otis and Maeve from Sex Education because I was so invested,” she said.

The singer first spoke about that track last November, confirming that it “ended up on album 3”.

In September last year, Pale Waves revealed they were in the studio working on their third record by sharing some behind the scenes photos. One image of a notebook included the potential lyrics: “Fragile as a feather, can’t afford to break. As I’m getting older, fear I’ll make the same mistakes. Broken around the edges.”

Pale Waves are set to perform at Reading & Leeds and Community Festival this summer.

In a four-star review of ‘Who Am I?’, NME wrote: “The band capture their optimism of a new life worth living, but never shy away laying bare the challenges of doing so in times like these.

“Just getting through the day or to the finish line is enough for most of us these days; Pale Waves ought to be proud of what they’ve achieved.”

Lizzo was “genuinely surprised” Harry Styles asked her to perform at Coachella

Lizzo has said she was “genuinely surprised” that Harry Styles invited her to join him on stage at Coachella 2022.

The pair teamed up during Styles’ headline show at the second weekend of the California festival last Friday (April 22), delivering joint renditions of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ and One Direction‘s ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.

Prior to their collaboration, Lizzo teased that she was “bored otw [on my way] to Coachella” in a video she shared on TikTok.

During a recent interview on the Audacy podcast, the ‘Juice’ singer was asked by host Kevan Kenney to “take us behind-the-scenes of a surprise Coachella performance”.

Lizzo replied: “Well, [at] first Harry was gonna do 2Pac hologram and I was like, ‘I dunno, I feel like somebody already did that [Laughs].

“The crazy thing is, it really was genuinely a surprise for me too because I think I found out Wednesday night, and then I was rehearsing. ‘Cause I was genuinely going to Coachella to see Harry.

“I love his music, that’s my guy, I’m a fan. So I was like I’m going to pull up, celebrate my birthday early.”

She continued: “And then Wednesday night, it was like, ‘Do you want to come and rehearse and do ‘I Will Survive?” And I’m like, ‘Fuck, yeah!’ So I pulled up a day early, we ran it three times in his trailer, and then we just did it.”

Lizzo went on to talk about her previous connections to her friend Styles. “He did a cover of ‘Juice’ and then I did a cover of ‘Adore You’, and then we did ‘Juice’ together,” she recalled to Kenney.

“And I was gonna do ‘Adore You’ on stage with him, and then his show got rained out by like hurricane rain in Miami so we never got to scratch that itch. So we finally did it three years later on the Coachella main stage, which by the way [was] his first festival.

“Isn’t that crazy?! First festival – casually headlining Coachella. He was like, ‘Do you do festivals?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, bro. I played Glastonbury in 2012 to one person’. He was like, ‘Well this is my first one’. I’m like, ‘Wow, you’re a fucking legend’.”

In a four-star review of Styles’ Coachella weekend one show, NME wrote: “[…] It’s clear that he’s no longer aiming for the rock star lane, but is firmly blazing his own path through it.”

Lizzo recently announced live dates for a huge North American arena tour later this year in support of her fourth album ‘Special’, which is due to arrive on July 15. You can find any remaining tickets here.

Meanwhile, Harry Styles is set to headline Radio 1’s Big Weekend next month. His third solo record, ‘Harry’s House’, comes out on May 20.
