The Cool Smashers’ roster is, indeed, tattooed with some of the biggest names in the sport: Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos, Jema Galanza, Jeanette Panaga, […]

Textured Leather And Hemp Brighten Up The Nike Air Force 1 Low “Doll”

The Nike Air Force 1 Low is unquestionably one of the brand’s focuses for the year. As part of its 40th anniversary, Bruce Kilgore’s iconic design has emerged in dozens of special and general releases, with the latter category soon boasting a women’s pair constructed from textured leather and hemp.

Clad in “Summit White” and “Doll,” the upcoming sneakers deliver a summer-friendly ensemble. Stitching overlays throughout the forefoot, midfoot and heel indulge in a pattern-covers purple tone, interrupting the women’s pair’s uniform look. Profile swooshes and upper heel panels boast a raised leather finish that contrast the surrounding arrangements found across the rest of the low-top Air Force 1, while sole units underfoot feature a partly-translucent outsole in the titular purple “Doll” tone. Lastly, sock-liners also boast rich purple patterns that match most overlays’ trims.

Enjoy official images of the pair ahead, and anticipate a Nike.com launch soon.

In related sneaker news, the Kobe Bryant Estate has renewed its Nike partnership.

Nike Alternates Grey Shades On The Nike Air Max 95

Since its grand debut 25 years ago, the Air Max 95 has set itself apart in sneaker culture due to the pleasing grey gradient of shades. That aesthetic has been stamped into the the history of fashion as it’s been referenced and damn near plagiarized by competing brands both in the footwear industry and not, and it’s that imitation that acts as proof of the Air Max 95s immeasurable influence in culture. While this new Air Max 95 isn’t the OG gradient we’ve come to know and love, we can only help but be reminded of that timeless style through the selection of colors.

Two shades of grey have completely overtaken this latest release, with alternating panels and a monochromatic sole package offering up a two-toned look that’ll go with any outfit. We can argue that an accent color — volt, crimson, or whatever else you prefer — would look solid in this particular style, so perhaps Nike has plans of that moving forward. Finally, the Swoosh at the heel is of the Jewel kind, something we’ve seen more frequently in recent Air Max 95 drops.

Expect a release on Nike. com soon for $170.

‘Summer of Soul’ Producer Says Will Smith & Chris Rock ‘Robbed’ Oscar Moment With Slap, ‘Four White Guys’ Joke

One of the producers behind Summer of Soul (… Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), awarded the best documentary feature Oscar immediately in the aftermath of Will Smith’s onstage attack on Chris Rock, took to social media Wednesday not only to criticize Smith for his actions, but also Rock for a joke he made about the team when they won.

Summer of Soul‘s director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and producers Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein had the unenviable task of walking to the stage to collect an award with the entire Dolby Theatre still reeling in shock from when Smith rushed the stage and assaulted Rock moments earlier.

On Wednesday evening, Patel took to Twitter to give his side of what happened in the immediate aftermath of the slap and then his team collecting their Oscars, explaining that he was “angry” not only with Smith for having “robbed” the entire category of its moment, but also with Rock for a flippant joke that described the producers incorrectly as “four white guys,” which he says erased his achievement.

Patel, who wrote that he was speaking “for me and me alone. Not Ahmir and not our co-producers,” began his Twitter thread detailing that he had been “drunk with joy” the last few days, celebrating their Oscar win and he took pains to thank everyone for their support and congratulations. He added that he was “still sort of processing” the incident between Smith and Rock.

“Once we realized the Chris Rock/Will Smith interaction wasn’t a bit, everything got turned upside down. Everyone was still trying to make sense of it when Chris persevered and started to read the nominees,” Patel wrote.

“I think what Will did was selfish. It robbed the category of its moment. It robbed the other excellent and amazing films of their moment to be acknowledged in what was a STRONG year for docs. And it robbed Summer of Soul and our team of our moment. Of a loud, enthusiastic cheer for a celebrated film,” Patel added.

Patel continued, “We were in shock walking to the stage — not because of winning but because we, too, were still trying to make sense of what happened. Then Will hugs Ahmir and daps me up. I didn’t even know it was happening in the moment. Still in shock.”

The producer writes that Thompson handled the moment with grace, but given everything that was going on, he didn’t hear what Rock was saying onstage.

“What I didn’t hear in that moment walking to stage but was told of afterwards is what Chris Rock said when reading our name from the winner’s card — the winner is Summer of Soul … Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and … four white guys.’ WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F—?????”

Chris Rock: And the winner is Ahmir Thompson and four white guys.

— 8645 (@DistortedLoop) March 28, 2022

Patel went on to explain his anger. “The reason that makes me SO SO VERY ANGRY is because I was so proud to be one of a handful of South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the history of the award. I was ecstatic that I was the third South Asian to win that night — after [Riz Ahmed] and Aneil Karia won earlier in the night for The Long Goodbye. Three South Asians winning on the same night — that’s never happened before! And it’s meaningful! It’s history!”

He added that Rock wasn’t even accurate to say Thompson and “four white guys” won, as the film has only three producers — Patel, Fyvolent and Dinerstein.

Patel added that he “can take a joke” but “not in that moment. … What a sh–ty, disrespectful thing to do. AND HERE’S THE THING. … It wasn’t that Chris Rock was under stress. He made the same joke the night before onstage at the Roots Jam!”

The producer then wrote of his anger at the various players in the incident, adding that he was “angry at Will Smith. Angry at Chris Rock. Angry for me. Angry for Ahmir. Angry for my fellow filmmakers.”

He concluded his thread by revealing he couldn’t face watching the ceremony again and “probably never will. … Thank you, Chris — you absolute f—ing di–.

“What both Will AND Chris did really stained what should have been a beautiful moment for us,” Patel wrote.

New Around the World: Demi Lovato’s ‘Cool for the Summer’ Reheats on Global Charts

Glass Animals, GAYLE and Anitta infuse the upper reaches of the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated April 2) with songs from 2020, ’21 and ’22, respectively. But elsewhere on the global tallies, a hit from the mid-2010s roars back.

Demi Lovato debuts in the top half of both global charts with 2015’s “Cool for the Summer,” at No. 66 on the Global Excl. U.S. list and at No. 93 on the Global 200. The song, from 2015, earned 13.4 million official streams and sold 950 downloads worldwide in the week ending March 24, according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data. Those figures represent increases of 224% and 573%, respectively, week-over-week.

“Cool” is resurging as a sped-up, pitched-up remix of it has gone viral, soundtracking numerous dance videos on TikTok. The renewed activity has also inspired an official “Sped Up Remix,” currently available for pre-save/pre-add, as well as a re-servicing of the song to radio.

Global streams for “Cool” have ballooned over the last month, rising weekly by 25%, 32%, 82% and now 224%. The gains for the track by the U.S.-based Lovato haven’t been the same in every pocket of the world, though; U.S. streams have increased by 17% and 111% the last two weeks, while non-U.S. streams have jumped by 95% and 261%. While “Cool” derived 38% of its worldwide streams from the U.S. in the week ending March 3, that share has shrunk to 16% in the current tracking week. While the song and Lovato’s catalog as a whole usually splits more toward the U.S., the TikTok virality has expanded the song’s reach to a wider global audience.

“Cool” also debuts at No. 23 on the LyricFind Global chart, indicating curiosity around the single. Following its original release, it debuted on the July 18, 2015-dated Billboard Hot 100 at No. 36, ultimately rising to No. 11 that September. It also hit No. 3 on Pop Airplay.

“Cool” is Lovato’s fifth song to crack both global charts (dating to their 2020 launch). It follows “OK Not to Be OK” with Marshmello; “What Other People Say” with Sam Fischer; “Dancing With the Devil”; and “Met Him Last Night,” featuring Ariana Grande.

Also representing the 2010s, Pharrell Williams’ “Just a Cloud Away,” from 2013’s Despicable Me 2 soundtrack (which also includes his 2014 10-week Hot 100 No. 1 “Happy”), debuts at No. 163 on the Global 200, likewise boosted by TikTok virality, while Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” which topped the Hot 100 in 2016, enters the Global Excl. U.S. at No. 190.

Billboard Explains: What a Grammy Award Win Means

The 64th annual Grammy Awards are set to take place Sunday night, where the biggest and brightest artists in the industry will take home coveted golden gramophones for their achievements in music. But once an artist is able to collect one of the most high-profile honors in music, how does it benefit the rest of their career?

Artists will often see a boost in album sales and streaming numbers after taking home a Grammy in what’s called a “Grammy bump,” but the size of the bump often correlates with how many awards are collected and when in the ceremony the wins occur. Generally, primetime award wins and showstopping performances during the main telecast will yield bigger gains. In the case of Taylor Swift, Folklore won the night’s album of the year award and later saw a 53 percent increase in earnings in the week of and week following the ceremony. But the bump didn’t stop there: Swift’s entire catalog also saw a 12 percent increase in revenue.

Bumps are not limited to the Taylor Swifts of the music industry, though: For any artist, winner, nominee or performer at the Grammys, surges in earnings range from 4 to 400 percent after the ceremony. Appearing at the Grammys often guarantees an artist an influx of opportunities — like Koffee, who leveraged her best reggae album win into signing a U.S. record deal just days after the 2019 award, or Kendrick Lamar, who saw a 349 percent jump in his Instagram following after his first Grammys.

Ultimately, the Grammys works wonders to help an artist with their visibility, as Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. puts it: “The attention and excitement around a Grammy win always translates to people more curious, especially if it’s a newer artist. It impacts your ability to attract attention thereby getting you better deals, better contracts…hopefully more people are excited to see you and want to listen to what you’ve done.”

Rapper Oxxxymiron raises £50,000 with Russians Against War charity show

Rapper Oxxxymiron’s recent Russians Against War (RAW) charity show raised more than £50,000.

The concert, which took place at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Thursday (March 24) of last week, was a “reminder of the power of music”, according to Mike Malek, the Russian rapper’s agent.

READ MORE: Ukrainian artists on the Russian crisis: “Now is the time to push for change”

Funds raised were donated to efforts supporting Ukrainian refugees impacted by Russia’s February 24 invasion of their country. The show followed the news that Oxxxymiron had cancelled six sold-out shows in Moscow in protest of the war.

“I know that most people in Russia are against this war, and I am confident that the more people would talk about their real attitude to it, the faster we can stop this horror,” he said in a statement to The New York Times.

Oxxxymiron, who is also known as Miron Fyodorov, continued: “I cannot entertain you when Russian missiles are falling on Ukraine—when residents of Kyiv are forced to hide in basements and in the metro, while people are dying.”

Organisers live-streamed the concert, which happened to be the rapper’s first London show in six years, via Twitch, YouTube and Instagram.

“Nights like last Thursday are an incredible reminder of the strength of music and how it brings people together for the greater good,” James Ponnusamy, the show’s promoter, told MusicWeek.

Ponnusamy added: “Thank you to ticket holders and the Livestream audience who helped raise awareness and show their generosity and support. All donations received will help those in Ukraine impacted by the War.”

Malak also said it was vital to both him and promoters “to put this show on and unify people against war and allow an incredible artist to use his platform. It is times like these that remind me why I and many of us got into music and the power it holds.”

He added: “To see so many people of different ages and backgrounds come together and raise an incredible amount of money for an important cause makes it all worth it. Combining the live experience with livestreaming meant we could not only raise money but also awareness that this is a war nobody wants to see nor supports.”

Fyodorov also held a live-streamed charity event in Istanbul on March 15. At one point, during the event he paused the performance to make a plea to those Russian people who are in favour of the action being taken by President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.

“It seems to me – rather, I’m sure – that the people who are for this war are in fact against this war,” Oxxxymiron began. “They just believe that this is really a special operation to bomb military facilities. In fact, this special peacekeeping operation does not exist. It is a war.”

He continued: “Unfortunately, this illusion is one that our parents believe in. It it very important to talk to them because they’re probably not bloodthirsty people but they watch too much television.”

Oxxxymiron went on to say that he “really wants to appeal to those who don’t agree with me”, adding: “I want to ask you to consider the possibility of alternative viewpoints in your brain.

The likes of Arcade FirePatti Smith and Franz Ferdinand have performed at Ukraine fundraiser shows recently. Elsewhere, The Cure launched a new charity band t-shirt as Massive Attack confirmed plans to sell off special artwork to raise funds.

You can donate here to the Red Cross to help those impacted by the conflict, or via a number of other ways through Choose Love.

Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse steps away from live duties

Deep Purple‘s Steve Morse has announced that he will be temporarily stepping away from live duties with the band.

READ MORE: Deep Purple’s Ian Gillan: “Young artists should upset the previous generation and clear the decks”

The legendary rockers were back on stage in February, where they kicked off their 2022 dates with three shows in Florida. They’re due to head to Europe in May, June and July, with dates at festivals including Hellfest in France and Stimmen Festival in Germany.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the band confirmed that Morse will be taking a break, with Simon McBride replacing the guitarist for any upcoming dates. Morse also added his own statement, revealing that he is stepping back to care for his wife, who is unwell.

“Today, Deep Purple announce that, due to a family matter, Steve Morse will be taking a temporary hiatus from Deep Purple live shows but remains a full member of the band,” the band’s statement read. “Steve’s replacement for the upcoming live shows in May, June and July 2022 will be guitarist Simon McBride, who has previously toured with both Ian Gillan and Don Airey amongst others.”

Morse added: “Hello, everybody. I’ve just done a few gigs with the band, after years (!?) of not playing live. It’s a bittersweet, wonderful time to get together. However, my dear wife Janine is currently battling cancer. At this point, there are so many possible complications and unknowns, that whatever time we have left in our lives, I simply must be there with her.”

Today, Deep Purple announce that, due to a family matter, Steve Morse will be taking a temporary hiatus from Deep Purple…

Posted by Deep Purple on Thursday, March 31, 2022

He continued: “I am not leaving the band – I hope that after she gets a clean bill of health, I can re-join the tour. However, I am not seeing any likely situation which would allow me to do overseas touring in the immediate future. I continue to be privileged to be a part of the Purple family tree, and also to get to feel the amazing support of so many loyal fans and the rest of the band.

“There’s a certified world class guitarist ready to take over for the live shows whom everybody will surely be happy to hear. I appreciate all your sincere prayers for Janine and thank you all.”

Deep Purple released their 21st studio album ‘Whoosh!’ in 2020, announcing the album with its lead single ‘Throw My Bones’.

In a three-star review, NME said: “‘Whoosh!’ isn’t just a testament to their staying power, but perhaps one of the most stupidly fun and outrageously silly albums of the year – and goodness, we’re all in need of a bit of fun right now, aren’t we?”

The band are due to play the UK in October, with dates in London, Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester – find tickets here.

Acid Wash Denim Outfits This Kids’ Air Jordan 6

Lately, Nike has expressed a fascination with acid wash denim, as they’ve recently applied the fabric to many of their classics. Jordan Brand, too, shares this interest, as both the Air Jordan 1 Mid and Air Jordan 1 Low have followed suit.

Soon, the Air Jordan 6 will also join the above-mentioned pairs, doing so in what seems to be a kids-exclusive size run. The denim, whose acid wash treatment creates dark streaks through the material, overlays atop a neutral-colored canvas. Adjacent, complementary hits of “University Blue” mark the sole and heel pull, while cream and white dress the PS and TD tongues, respectively.

Branded with black text and matching Jumpman logos, this Air Jordan 6 should hit select retailers as well as Nike.com within the next few months. For now, sit tight as we await further updates.

To stay up-to-date with Jordan releases, make sure to keep a close eye on our Air Jordan 2022 Release Dates page.
