Lars Ulrich says “there’s nothing cohesive” yet in terms of new Metallica music

Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich has shared an update on the status of the band’s long-awaited new material.

Speaking in a new interview with Zane Lowe for his Apple Music 1 show, the 57-year-old drummer was asked where the band are at with regards to a follow-up to 2016’s ‘Hardwired… To Self-Destruct’.

“I mean, listen, we haven’t been out of the house for a year and a half, and so it’s very rejuvenating,” Ulrich said. “And the last couple, two, three days, as we’ve played… Played with Miley [Cyrus] yesterday, played with Miley today, you’re kind of getting your groove back, getting your spunk back, getting your confidence back, getting the band back together… but listen, I don’t know….

“I know everybody’s had a different version of obviously the last 18 months. It’s impacted all of us in different ways, but sitting still, as you know, is not my forte. And so, just getting out again and getting amongst it is so fucking re-energising. And the last couple of days, like James [Hetfield] said earlier, celebrating the legacy of [the ‘Metallica’ album] and so on is… It’s kind of cool, but still it’s a little like, “Okay, well what’s about the future?” What about the future? I just get too…”

He continued: “Obviously, ultimately, we like the seesaw element of it, the balance, but still, it’s like, ‘Let’s get on with it. Let’s go play some shows, let’s get on with our fall. Let’s hope that we can get through the next few months without anybody going down, keep our fingers crossed. Let’s be cautious, let’s be respectful of the situation out there.

“And of course there’s new music coming, there’s always new music coming. It keeps us alive, you know that… Listen, I wish I could… I mean, of course there’s new music, but there’s nothing cohesive. There’s not a story, there’s not anything to really back it up yet.”

Back in July, guitarist Kirk Hammett had talked up the new Metallica album’s arrival, saying he hopes it will “cut through the division” in the world.

The band have been working on new music during the coronavirus pandemic, with James Hetfield confirming that the band wrote 10 songs together over Zoom in quarantine.

Last month, it was confirmed that Metallica will headline the first-ever German edition of Download Festival when it takes place in 2022.

The inaugural Download Festival Germany will take place at the motor racing circuit Hockenheimring in the Rhine valley on June 24 next year. Also confirmed for the line-up so far are Nevada band Five Finger Death Punch and Swedish power metal outfit Sabaton.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds share live version of ‘Push The Sky Away’ with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have shared a new live version of their 2013 track ‘Push The Sky Away’, which was recorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – listen to it below.

The song, which was recorded live in 2019 as part of the ‘Film Music – Nick Cave & Warren Ellis’ event at the Hamer Hall in Melbourne, will appear on the band’s ‘B-Sides & Rarities Part II’ album which is set to come out on October 22.

“I never had more fun on stage than with the MSO…” Cave said of the experience, while Warren Ellis called the event “one of the best shows of my life”.

Listen to the new live version of ‘Push The Sky Away’ with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra below:

The upcoming compilation album, compiled by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, is the follow-up to 2005’s lauded ‘B-Sides & Rarities’ album. The record features 27 rare and unreleased tracks from 2006-2020, including the first recordings of ‘Skeleton Tree’, ‘Girl In Amber’ and ‘Bright Horses’.

Set for release on double vinyl, double CD, deluxe double CD and all digital platforms on October 22, ‘B-Sides & Rarities Part II’ was previewed in August by the release of the 2006 song ‘Vortex’, while a ‘Ghosteen’-era outtake called ‘Earthlings’ was shared last month.

Speaking about the new album, Cave said: “I always liked the original ‘B-Sides & Rarities’ more than any of our other albums. It’s the only one I’d listen to willingly. It seems more relaxed, even a bit nonsensical in places, but with some beautiful songs throughout. There is something, too, about the smallness of certain songs that is closer to their original spirit.”

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are currently on a UK tour in support of their joint lockdown album ‘CARNAGE’, which came out in February.

Earlier this year, Red Hot Chili Peppers revealed that they are currently at work on a new album with John Frusciante and that they’re “psyched” to have their old guitarist back in the fold.

Earlier this year the band sold their songwriting catalogue to Hipgnosis, joining an extensive list of artists who have recently signed over their intellectual property in multi-million dollar deals.

The deal, which Billboard reports may not have closed yet, is worth at least £100million ($140million) and is likely to include their hit tracks ‘Snow (Hey Oh)’, ‘Californication’, ‘Otherside’, ‘Can’t Stop’ and ‘Give It Away’, among others.

Cat Power announces new ‘Covers’ album with Frank Ocean and The Pogues tracks

Cat Power has announced details of a new covers album – listen to her versions of tracks by Frank Ocean and The Pogues below.

‘Covers’ will be released on January 14, 2022 via Domino, and also feature renditions of songs by Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Billie Holiday and more.

Ahead of the release of the album, Cat Power has shared a version of Frank Ocean’s 2012 track ‘Bad Religion’, which she also performed on The Late Late Show with James Corden last night (October 7).

In a statement, the singer revealed that the ‘Bad Religion’ cover originated when she started pulling lyrics out from the track to incorporate into her own song ‘In Your Face’ while performing live, in order to distance herself from the pain of the track.

“That song was bringing me down,” she said, “so I started pulling out lyrics from ‘Bad Religion’ and singing those instead of getting super depressed.

“Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music.”

Listen to the cover of ‘Bad Religion’, see her Corden performance of the version, and listen to another cover of The Pogues’ ‘A Pair Of Brown Eyes’, Cat Power’s “personal favourite” cover on the album, below.

See the tracklist for ‘Covers’ below:

1. ‘Bad Religion’ – Frank Ocean
2. ‘Unhate’ – Cat Power – Chan Marshall
3. ‘Pa Pa Power’ – Dead Man’s Bones
4. ‘A Pair Of Brown Eyes’ – The Pogues
5. ‘Against the Wind’ – Bob Seger
6. ‘Endless Sea’ – Iggy Pop
7. ‘These Days’ – Jackson Browne
8. ‘It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels’ – Kitty Wells
9. ‘I Had A Dream Joe’ – Nick Cave
10. ‘Here Comes A Regular’ – The Replacements
11. ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ – Billie Holiday

In recent years, Cat Power has also covered Rihanna’s ‘Stay’, released a cover of Cassius‘ 2006 single ‘Toop Toop’ as a tribute to member Philippe Zdar on the first anniversary of his passing, and collaborated with Lana Del Rey.

Day6’s Jae claims it wasn’t his choice to take a break from the band

Jae Park of South Korean band Day6 has claimed that it wasn’t his choice to take a break from the group.

READ MORE: Day6 (Even Of Day): “Whenever we listen to songs in different languages, there’s still emotions that we can feel”

In a recent Instagram Live session, the Korean-American singer opened up about his hiatus from the group. His comments were seemingly in reference to the Day6 sub-unit Even Of Day, which features three of the band’s five members: Young K, Wonpil and Dowoon.

“I also want to make a couple things clear, like, for the work stuff, I was never the one who said I don’t want to perform,” Park alleged during his live broadcast, as archived on YouTube. “I was never the person who said I’m going to take a break. I’ve had that on my chest for a very long time.”

Park then claimed that he was “never invited [to join] Even Of Day”, adding that he “miss[es] those days when it was still a team”. Even Of Day made their debut in August 2020, while Day6 were still on hiatus, before returning with a new mini-album earlier this July.

“Nobody ever asked me like, ‘Yo, you wanna come?’ I expected people to hit me up,” Park added. “No one hit me up, so I was just here doing my own thing. And people are gonna come here and tell me I’m selfish? Come on, man.”

Park later said that “all [he] has now” is his solo music – which he releases under the moniker eaJ – and the projects he has worked on by himself. “I haven’t been given these opportunities… I did everything on my own, out of my own pocket,” he said. “I called favours for everything.”

He later ended the Instagram Live with a cryptic message, saying that his fans “might not like the decisions to come”. He added: “I want you guys to know that I’ve done everything that I could for [Day6].”

Last month, Park spoke about plans to interact with fans more in the coming year when he’s “more out of the K-pop realm”, as well as having more solo releases. “But I’m telling you guys, [20]22 is about to be our year, for sure,” he added.

Kanye West is reportedly set to open the ‘Donda Academy’, a new school in Southern California.

The ‘Donda Academy’ is reportedly set on “finding the intersection between faith and the innovation of the future,” and will focus on “equipping students with an education that will last in the ever-changing world”.

One promising basketball player, Jakhi Howard, confirmed his move to the school on Instagram, writing: “I will be moving to California and I will be transferring to Donda Academy, I want to THANK YOU NORCROSS and the whole BLUE DEVIL FAMILY STILL WILL BE MY FAMILY.”

West has also reportedly reached out to the players personally on Instagram, with one telling Yahoo Sports: “It’s crazy that he reached out. But he’s building a good team with players that I want to play with and it’s out in LA in a good market so it’s something me and my family have to think about.”

There is little information out there regarding the ‘Donda Academy’ so far, but a mission statement on their official website, which also features an option to apply for admission, reads: “Using an ethic of integrity and care, ‘Donda Academy’ prepares students to become the next generation of leaders, thinkers and innovators by providing them with a world-class education that includes a rigorous core curriculum, and an emphasis on sustainability, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.”

Elsewhere, it also appears that West wants to launch a range of ‘DONDA’ tech products after submitting paperwork to trademark the name last month.

According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the rapper and producer wants to use the ‘DONDA’ branding on a range of tablet computers, surround sound systems and smartwatches.
