Currently in his sixth NBA season, Dejounte Murray of the San Antonio Spurs has recently unveiled a New Balance 327 collaboration inspired by his hometown, Seattle.

Mac Miller Drug Supplier Pleads Guilty to Distributing Fentanyl-Laced Pills

In court documents obtained by Billboard on Tuesday (Oct. 26), Stephen Walter, the man responsible for supplying Mac Miller’s drug dealer with counterfeit oxycodone pills that killed the rapper in 2018, has pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of fentanyl. According to prosecutors, Walter, 48, faces up to 20 years in prison.

Two other men, Cameron James Pettit and Ryan Michael Reavis were charged in connection to the death of Miller and pleaded not guilty. The trial begins March 1, 2022.

The documents state that Walter “knowingly and intentionally directed Ryan Michael Reavis to distribute fentanyl in the form of counterfeit oxycodone pills, to Cameron James Pettit. [Walter] knew that the pills that he directed Reavis to give to Pettit contained fentanyl or some other federally controlled substance, and at all relevant times intended for Reavis to distribute the pills to Pettit.”

According to the plea agreement, fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol combined to cause Miller’s fatal overdose. “M.M. would not have died from an overdose but for the fentanyl contained in the pills that M.M. had received from Pettit on September 4, 2018,” the document notes. While Walter pleaded guilty to the one count of distribution of fentanyl, his charge to distribute a controlled substance was dropped.

Last week, Mac Miller’s 2014 fan-favorite mixtape Faces landed on streaming services. The project debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

All the Bilingual Collabs That Topped Hot Latin Songs Chart in the Past 5 Years

Over the past five years, bilingual (Spanish and English) songs such as “Despacito,” “Tusa,” “Hawái” and “RITMO (Bad Boys for Life),” among others, have topped Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.

Scoring non-Latin acts such as Justin Bieber and The Weekend their first entries on the tally, Spanglish duets have become a growing trend across Billboard’s charts, scoring not only No. 1s on Latin surveys, but also topping all-genre charts such as the Hot 100.

From Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi’s Bieber-assisted “Despacito” to Karol G and Nicki Minaj’s “Tusa,” here are the nine bilingual collabs that have topped Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart in the past five years.

“Despacito” – Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber

Spending 110 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Justin Bieber-assisted “Despacito” peaked at No. 1 on the tally dated Feb. 17,  2017. The global smash hit also topped the all-genre Hot 100. “It was just another song in Spanish,” Fonsi said about the track making history. “I’ve been doing this for 21 years. It’s just, I’m putting out an album, let me do a new song. This idea pops to my head, then Daddy Yankee jumps on it, it starts to sound really cool. We release it, it becomes a huge hit.”

“Mi Gente” – J Balvin & Willy William feat. Beyonce

With Beyonce in tow, J Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gente” topped the chart on Oct. 20, 2017. It spent a total of 56 weeks on Hot Latin Songs. Before it was released, Beyoncé shared a 20-second video on Instagram announcing she had joined the remix and would donate all proceeds to disaster relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and the other recently affected Caribbean islands.

“Taki Taki” – DJ Snake feat. Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B

The rumba-infused, party-starting track nabbed both DJ Snake and Selena Gomez their first-ever No. 1 entry on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Peaking at the top on Oct. 12, 2018, and spending 41 weeks on the chart, “Taki Taki” became Cardi B’s third No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs and Ozuna’s eighth leader, at the time.

“Con Calma” – Daddy Yankee & Katy Perry feat. Snow

Daddy Yankee’s “Con Calma,” featuring Snow, is a remake of Snow’s 1993 No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Informer.” The track, which fuses upbeat Caribbean dance rhythms with undertones of reggae, was later remixed by Katy Perry peaked and peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated May 3, 2019. The Perry-assisted remix spent 42 weeks on the chart.

“Tusa” – Karol G & Nicki Minaj

Spending 35 weeks on the chart, Karol G and Nicki Minaj’s anthem “Tusa” peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated Nov. 22, 2019. The triumphant team-up marked a number of milestones for the Colombian hitmaker. It was the first Latin song with all female artists to reach a billion streams on Spotify, and it was also the first song with a female lead artist to debut atop Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart since 2016.

“RITMO (Bad Boys for Life)” – Black Eyed Peas & J Balvin

The Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin’s “Ritmo” crowned the survey, reaching the No. 1 spot on Jan. 3, 2020. “RITMO” reworks Corona’s dance classic “The Rhythm of the Night,” which hit No. 11 on the Hot 100 in January 1995.

“Mamacita” – Black Eyed Peas, Ozuna & J.Rey Soul

On Hot Latin Songs, “Mamacita” peaked at No. 1 on July 17, 2020, spending 26 weeks on the chart. The catchy collab samples Madonna’s 1987 hit single “La Isla Bonita,” which reached No. 4 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart. As “La Isla Bonita” was co-written by Madonna, she also got songwriting credit on “Mamacita,” and in turn received her first top 10 as a songwriter on Hot Latin Songs.

“Un Dia (One Day)” – J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy

Fusing the best of both worlds, the Spanglish bop by Balvin, Bad Bunny, Tainy and Dua laces seductive melodies of dream pop and flairs of dancehall and reggaeton. In his verse, Bad Bunny even samples part of Tito “El Bambino” and Jadiel’s 2007 hit “Sol, Playa y Arena,” adding a touch of old-school reggaeton. “One Day” peaked at No. 1 on Aug. 7, 2020, and spent 26 weeks on the chart.

“Hawái” – Maluma & The Weeknd

Spending 49 weeks on the chart, Maluma and The Weeknd’s “Hawái” peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated Sept. 11, 2020. Hitting No. 1 secured the Colombian chart-topping artist his second chart-topper on the tally and his first as a lead act.

Ruben Rodriguez, Former Motown & Columbia Promotion Exec, Dies at 68

Ruben Rodriquez, a veteran record promotion executive whose career included successful tenures with Motown, Columbia, Elektra and his own Pendulum Records, died Sunday in his sleep. He was 68.

Known for his sophisticated sartorial style and affable personality, Rodriguez received the lifetime achievement award from the Living Legends Foundation in 2015. During that presentation, LLF noted of Rodriguez, “Since the very beginning of his 40-plus-year stint in the business, he was always dapper in appearance while remaining sharp in his professional focus on what would eventually afford him the moniker, ‘Radio’s Best Friend.’ This honor is being presented for the longevity of passion, integrity and creative spirit given so generously to an industry that has benefited tremendously from its donor.”

Raised in the Van Dyke & Tilden projects in Brooklyn, New York, Rodriguez began the first chapter in a 50-year industry career at the age of 18 as Northeast regional marketing and promotion manager at Motown Records. After running campaigns on behalf of projects by Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson, Rodriguez further honed his promotion skills at Neil Bogart’s Casablanca Records where he worked with a diverse roster that included Donna Summer, Cameo, KISS, Parliament Funkadelic and the Village People.

From there, Rodriguez advanced to senior vp promotion at Chris Blackwell’s Island Records (Grace Jones) and to the same post at Columbia Records under Clive Davis. At the latter stop, his promotional achievements earned No. 1 albums for George Michael, Terrence Trent D’Arby, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys and LL Cool J, among others.

After exiting Columbia, Rodriguez pursued his entrepreneurial calling with the establishment of  label, Pendulum Records. The label made its breakthrough with the 1992 release of Digable Planets’ “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat),” which hit No. 1 on the rap chart and No. 15 on the Hot 100. The song subsequently won the group a Grammy Award for best rap performance by a duo or group in 1994.

While building Pendulum, Rodriguez simultaneously accepted another senior vp promotion post, this time with Elektra Records. Responsible for working the hits behind artists such as Anita Baker, Keith Sweat and Natalie Cole, Rodriguez helped forge the label’s hip-hop footprint in the early ‘90s through projects by Brand Nubians and Leaders of the New School, the group that brought Busta Rhymes to the forefront.

In addition to Pendulum, Rodriguez also operated label consulting firm Ruben Rodriguez Entertainment, Inc. and management company RAM Talent Group, Inc. One of the latter’s first clients was R&B singer-songwriter Donell Jones; later signings included Shaliek and Lords of The Underground. In 2003 Rodriguez was presented with the Joseph Papp Racial Harmony Award by The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding.

Preceded in death last November by his son Xavier, who worked with him, Rodriguez is survived by his daughter Erica.

Primary Wave Signs Expansive Deal With Luther Vandross Estate

Primary Wave Music has signed a new deal with the estate of R&B legend Luther Vandross. The terms of the deal provide the independent publisher with new income stakes in a selection of both his publishing and master recordings. It will also give Primary Wave a stake in Vandross’s name and likeness rights.

The new deal builds on Primary Wave and the Vandross estate’s long term agreement to manage and administer the late singer’s assets.

As a multi-hyphenate musical talent who worked in the industry as a background singer, artist, producer and writer for over three decades, Vandross’s new deal with Primary Wave includes cuts of publishing and master recording income from his production work for Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and Dionne Warwick.

The deal also includes many of his top tracks from his own artist career, including “Never Too Much,” the titular single from his 1981 album which earned a no. 1 spot on Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and his cover “Endless Love,” featuring Mariah Carey, “Here and Now,” and “Dance With My Father.”

Born in 1951, New York-raised Vandross began his career when he was still in grade school, singing at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theatre four times before his high school graduation. Soon after, he became a renowned session vocalist, supporting several recording artists in the early ’70s before launching a career as a songwriter when he penned “Everybody Rejoice/Brand New Day” for the Broadway musical The Wiz as his first major gig in 1974.

Vandross then earned his stripes in the pop and R&B world as a writer and vocalist for the latter part of the 1970s, most notably writing the hook for David Bowie’s “Young Americans” and co-writing “Fascination,” and cutting background vocals for Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder and more.

By 1981, Vandross turned his attention to crafting his own artist career. With his solo debut Never Too Much he went from being known as a background genius to a platinum-selling artist in his own right. The album went on to earn him Grammy nominations for best new artist and best R&B vocal performance (Male) later that year, and Vandross continued picking up a consistent stream of Grammy nominations and wins for his work until his death in 2005 at the age of 54 due to a heart attack.

“Luther Vandross was a soulful American icon who was the voice of a generation,” said Larry Mestel, CEO and founder of Primary Wave, in a statement. “We look forward to working with Carmen and the estate to help expand Luther’s influence.”

Carmen J. Romano, a representative for Vandross’s estate at FBBM Entertainment Business Management adds, “We are delighted to join forces with Larry and Primary Wave. The LV Estate’s goal is to see Luther’s legacy continue to flourish and believe the partnership with Primary Wave is a clear step in that direction.”

Listen to Joe Unknown’s frantic debut single, ‘Ride’

Joe Unknown has released his debut single, ‘Ride’ – you can listen to it below.

The frantic first offering from the artist presents “vignettes of day-to-day British culture” through fast-paced lyrics such as “shooting kids online passes time, but my girlfriend hates it“.

Elsewhere, he delivers the line: “I like to participate in life’s little edge, from time to time I take a little ride over the edge.”

“If you live in a mansion, you still know what a cheese-and-bean melt tastes like,” Joe explained in a statement. “Those little things in life apply to everyone. What I’m talking about applies to each side, but doesn’t delve too far into either one.

“I don’t understand why British culture isn’t talked about enough, or why we’re always trying to be something that we’re not. I’m not talking about the shit we don’t have, I’m talking about the shit that is around us.”

He continued: “There’s a lot of poetry in Britain. I could talk to you about Wetherspoons carpets for like an hour. The aesthetic of ‘Spoons is stunning. The one opposite my flat is a hellhole and it’s beautiful.”

According to a press release, Joe Unknown’ left Hampshire to become a drum ‘n’ bass MC before COVID halted his touring plans. His influences include the likes of The Streets, Sleaford Mods, The Damned and Slowthai.

The artist also draws inspiration from the world of film, particularly “the production details of early Tarantino”.

Packer Highlights Navy, Red, And Green With Their Three-Piece adidas Forum Hi Collaboration

Following a brief hiatus, Packer Shoes is reprising their collaborative relationship with adidas. This time, the retailer is highlighting the Forum 84 Hi, dressing it up in three simple, vintage-influenced colorways.

Aside from the pairs’ stripes, bottoms, and insoles — which are dyed either red, blue, or green — each option is near exactly identical to the next in make-up. An off-white shade is used throughout the leather construction, midsole, and lace unit, giving the illusion of age. White is then applied to the fixtures adjacent, disrupting the flow by way of the perforated toe, mesh inserts, and lining.

Rounded out with Packer insignia, the capsule is sure to release very soon via PackerShoes.com. For now, sit tight for further updates.

In other Three Stripes news, the Foam Runner Vermillion lands this week.

Dylan Fuentes is Determined to Make His Mark, Across Borders and Genres

Dylan Fuentes is giving Latin music a global makeover. The Colombian singer-songwriter teamed up with Nigerian artist Daramola for his debut EP Arena, where they sonically blended their styles, influences, and cultures. On their hit “Wahala,” sleek Afro-beats meet the hard edge of Latin trap music. Fuentes is also making his mark as a protégé of Puerto Rican hit-maker Marco “Tainy” Masís on his NEON16 label.

The 24-year-old Fuentes hails from Barranquilla, the home of superstar Shakira. He was inspired to get into music by his father, who led a local band—the very one Fuentes would sing and rap with from ages nine to 12. Growing up, Fuentes was exposed to a variety of worldly sounds, drawing inspiration from reggaeton pioneers Wisin y Yandel, R&B star Chris Brown, and Canadian singer Justin Bieber.

Fuentes wrote and recorded on his own, which led to his breakthrough hit “Ajena” with Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers in 2018. Later that year, he branched out into acting in the hit Netflix show Siempre Bruja, where he performed his music.

In 2018, Fuentes made noise globally with his Myke Towers-assisted hit, “Ajena.” The track caught the attention of Tainy, who recently surpassed 100 weeks at the top of Billboard’s Latin Producers chart. Once Tainy and his business partner Lex Borrero created the label NEON16, they tapped Fuentes to join its burgeoning roster.

With the support of a superstar producer like Tainy behind him, Fuentes isn’t solely using his platform to build his brand–he’s leveraging his voice for the good of his fans. In this year’s single “DF,” he opened up about his battle with anxiety and depression and highlighted the importance of mental health awareness.

Now, Fuentes is pushing the boundaries of Latin music and expanding his reach as an artist, recently teaming up with Swedish producer Concrete for the song “Drown in Me.” In an interview with Billboard, Fuentes talked about his journey as an artist, working with Daramola, and what to expect next.

This interview has been translated and edited for length and clarity:

Your first big hit was “Ajena” with Myke Towers. How did your world change after releasing that song?

Before “Ajena,” I was a little bit more focused on doing romantic trap. This song opened my eyes and made me feel confident, like, “Wow, bro, you can really get people in a club dancing to your music.” That collaboration was huge. I have a lot of admiration for Myke Towers. I feel like this song changed my career so much, and so far, it’s my biggest song in terms of numbers.

What was it like acting in Siempre Bruja?

Recording this Netflix series was a dream for me. I enjoyed it so much. Acting comes to me in a very spontaneous way. I didn’t study it or anything. On the nights before [I arrived to set], I didn’t read or memorize anything, but everything stayed with me. It was like I was already the character, and everything flowed. I don’t want to do any acting [right now] because I have all my energy directed towards music, but I feel like down the road, I will. After 35, I want to do my own series with my best friend about our lives.

NEON16 has many artists from Puerto Rico. How do you feel about representing Colombia on the label?

In the beginning, I was scared, [laughs]. I was like, “Wow, they literally created reggaeton.” Now, I realize that I have to learn a lot from it. I grew up with reggaeton, and I have always listened to reggaeton. I also bring things to the table that are more from the Caribbean, more from dance, singing, more from Colombia’s African influence. I have a lot of that essence—that fusion and energy of reggaeton but with different melodies.

Your song “DF” is very powerful. Why did you want to open up about mental health in that song?

I went through 10 months of anxiety last year. I wasn’t well, not a single day, even though everything was going well in my career. Everything was moving forward, and everything was happening, but the anxiety [stopped me from realizing] the importance of what was happening in my career. When I did that song, I released so much emotion, like I had taken a weight off my shoulders. I felt like, “This is a hug for every follower of mine and for every person that connects with this song. It’s a hug for when they’re going through a bad time.”

Wahala” recently landed on Amazon Music’s Rompe playlist, and the track is a standout on your EP Arena. Can you tell me about the project and your experience of working with Daramola?

I met Daramola two years ago before signing with NEON. I made music with him about three months before. I tell you, I don’t speak English very well. Right now, my English is [at] 40%, and at that time, it was like 20%.

Dramola’s Spanish was nothing. It was 10%. We got into the studio, and we didn’t speak the same language, but we still made incredible music. It’s a very nice project that connects a lot to the culture I grew up with.

I grew up in Barranquilla with champeta. That [sound] came from Africa, but we also adapted and created it in Colombia. We also have dancehall; I grew up with all that.

You did a crossover song with Discrete, Ouse, and Kiesza called “Drown In Me“. How did that come together?

That was major. When they told me, I knew that through my music, I was fulfilling my dreams and getting into places I never thought I would. I didn’t imagine it. We blended our cultures through my music, and though we don’t speak the same language, they connected with my melodies and what I was feeling.

Who else do you like to collaborate with in the future?

My favorite artist is Post Malone. I want to gain respect and make a connection so we can work together someday.

Talking about reggaeton, from Colombia, J Balvin is an icon. I have always admired him. Right now, there are also new artists coming out of Colombia—Ryan Castro, who I love, and Blessd.

From Puerto Rico, Jhay Cortez is an inspiration for me right now. I would love to work with him. From Argentina, I would love to work with Maria Becerra.

What can we expect from you next?

We’re preparing my album. I’ve been working on it for two weeks now, making and finishing the music. That’s what’s coming, 13 or 14 songs. You’re going to feel that Dylan energy with all the songs. Each song is different, but all with my energy.
