“They’ve far more in common with Iggy & The Stooges than they do with The Darkness, and appear more the sort to worship at the altar of Placebo and read from the Velvet Goldmine playbook than riffing of Steel Panther’s tired japes. It’s douze points from us. Wham, bam, thank you Måneskin.”

Shygirl breaks out the charm on shimmery new single ‘Cleo’

Shygirl has officially dropped her second new single for 2021, following up her racy Slowthai collab, ‘BDE’, with a silky new cut titled ‘Cleo’.

READ MORE: Shygirl – ‘ALIAS’ review: futuristic club-rap bangers from underground queen’s fantasy universe

The track opens with a luscious orchestral passage, simmering and swelling as Shygirl’s reverb-flourished vocal soars over the mix. About a minute in, however, the track shifts dramatically into a thumping pop tune, with colourful, club-ready pad synths and a crisp beat driving the energy.

‘Cleo’ arrives today (October 27) alongside a video directed by Trinity Ellis. The clip shows the singer in a variety of dazzling outfits and grandiose settings. Take a look at it below:

‘Cleo’ comes ahead of Shygirl’s forthcoming headline tour in the UK and Europe. Initially set to kick off earlier this month, the eight-date run was recently knocked back to the first quarter of 2022.

The run will now begin in Manchester on Tuesday March 1, before rolling through Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Bristol, London and Amsterdam, wrapping up in Berlin on Wednesday March 16. Tickets and details for the full tour can be found on Shygirl’s website.

The singer released her second EP, ‘ALIAS’, last November via Because Music. NME gave the record a four-star review, with writer Ben Jolley saying it “proves that Shygirl is in full control of her artistic vision no matter the scale”.

Jolley also noted that in the wake of her touring plans for 2020 being cancelled, “Shygirl has instead created her own alternative reality for fans to immerse themselves in”.

DMX’s estate to be co-administered by rapper’s three oldest sons

After a lengthy battle regarding DMX‘s estate, it has been confirmed that the late rapper’s three eldest sons will be looking after his affairs. DMX did not leave behind a will.

“DMX’s ex-wife Tashera Simmons’ oldest sons, Xavier Simmons, Sean Simmons, and Tacoma Simmons, have been appointed temporary co-administrators of the estate of Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons pursuant to a decision of the Westchester County Surrogate’s Court today,” reads a statement from a representative.

“They will now exclusively manage the affairs of their late father’s estate. The estate has retained entertainment attorney Ron Sweeney of Ron Sweeney and Company to exclusively handle all entertainment-related matters. Estate Attorney, Herb Nass is the attorney for the Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons estate and the sons as co-administrators.”

The announcement comes just a couple of days after a woman claiming to be DMX’s 15th child entered the battle over the rapper’s estate. Nass, the estate’s attorney, said that all 15 people claiming to be DMX’s children will take paternity tests in coming weeks. “All the legal children of DMX will be entitled to an equal share of his estate,” Nass said at the time.

DMX’s fiancée, Desiree Lindstrom, also petitioned to be an administrator of the estate, with her application denied by a judge.

DMX died of a heart attack back in April of this year. The rapper’s first posthumous album, ‘Exodus’, was released the following month. His first studio album since 2012’s ‘Undisputed’, the record featured guest appearances from the likes of Swizz Beats, Jay-ZNasLil WayneSnoop Dogg and more.

Snoop Dogg honours late mother with singalong to ‘Stand By Me’

At a recent DJ set in Brooklyn, Snoop Dogg paid tribute to his late mother – Beverly Tate, who passed over the weekend at age 70 – with a venue-wide singalong to the Ben E. King classic ‘Stand By Me’.

The show took place a matter of hours after Tate’s passing, with Snoop addressing the crowd: “I wasn’t even gonna come out here and perform tonight ’cause my mother passed away earlier tonight, but in the spirit of the people of Boston, I wanted to come out here and represent for y’all because this is what my mama would have wanted me to do.”

Check out a video of Snoop playing ‘Stand By Me’ in Boston below:

After the performance, Snoop told his audience: “I needed this. I fucking love y’all for getting my spirit right tonight. Peace, love and soul.”

According to Page Six, Snoop was particularly grateful for the opportunity to perform after his devastating loss. “He was very emotional after the show,” Randy Greenstein – a partner at Big Night Live, the venue Snoop headlined – told the publication.

“He thanked our team, said he needed this show. He needed the love from the audience. It meant a lot to him.”

Back in July, Snoop thanked fans for their support while sharing a video of himself and his brothers visiting their mother in hospital. “Gotta stay strong, keep pushing on,” he added. “They say God don’t put nothing on your shoulders you can’t handle. I’m being tested right now, ya’ll. Make sure ya’ll pray for me and my family.”

Last week saw Snoop Dogg mark his 50th birthday by announcing ‘The Algorithm’, an “all-encompassing new project that features artists from the legendary Def Jam label’s past, present and future”.

He shared the track ‘Big Subwoofer’ by his rap supergroup Mount Westmore, which also features Ice CubeE-40 and Too $hort in its line-up. Further details on ‘Snoop Dogg Presents The Algorithm’, including a release date, are due to be revealed soon.

Dave Grohl discusses ‘Nevermind’ baby lawsuit: “He’s got a ‘Nevermind’ tattoo. I don’t”

Dave Grohl has discussed the ongoing lawsuit between the cover star of Nirvana‘s iconic ‘Nevermind’ artwork and the band themselves.

READ MORE: Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ at 30: a track-by-track guide from your favourite musicians

Earlier this year, Spencer Elden, the child who appears in the artwork, sued the surviving members of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain’s estate, alleging the image was an example of child pornography and sexual exploitation.

After saying he had “many ideas of how we should alter that cover” in the future, Grohl has now further discussed the ongoing issue in a new interview.

Talking to Vulture, Grohl said: “I don’t know that I can speak on it because I haven’t spent too much time thinking about it. I feel the same way most people do in that I have to disagree. That’s all I’ll say.”

Asked about Grohl’s thoughts on Elden re-creating the photo as an adult, Grohl added: “Listen, he’s got a ‘Nevermind’ tattoo. I don’t.”

Nirvana are also about to release a 30th anniversary edition of the classic album, however Elden wants his image censored on the reissue.

Elden also wants the album art altered for any future re-releases, according to his lawyer Maggie Mabie. “If there is a 30th anniversary re-release, he wants for the entire world not to see his genitals,” lawyer Maggie Mabie told The Associated Press.

Since the lawsuit was filed, a deluxe 30th anniversary reissue of ‘Nevermind’ has been officially announced and is set to be released on November 12. Pre-orders for the various deluxe edition are currently available on Nirvana’s website with Elden’s image uncensored.

Elsewhere, Nirvana have this week (October 25) won another lawsuit they were involved in, which claimed one of their most recognisable T-shirt designs is based on a copyrighted illustration of Dante’s ‘Inferno’.

Confidence Man Signs With I OH YOU, Books a ‘Holiday’

After COVID-19, lockdowns, and some rotten luck, Confidence Man is stepping out with a new record deal, and fresh tunes.

Announced Wednesday (Oct. 27), the Australian indie electronic act signs with I OH YOU, the red-hot label whose roster includes DMA’S, Jack River, Violent Soho and DZ Deathrays.

“We feel lucky,” frontman Sugar Bones tells Billboard. “We’ve always loved everything they’ve done. It feels like a really nice match for us. We’re stoked.”

The new deal comes ahead of “Holiday,” the first track lifted from Confidence Man’s forthcoming sophomore album.

Expect this “Holiday” to blow your hair back. “We’ve been wanting to try a ‘hands in the air’ banger forever. Everybody does. It’s quite difficult,” Bones explains. “But for some reason, this song has dropped out of the heavens.”

Self-produced, and mixed by Ewan Pearson, “Holiday” was “pretty much perfect from the get-go,” he notes.

Speaking over the phone from Sydney, singer Janet Planet describes the new cut as “Underworld meets M.I.A.” True, that’s an unusual vibe, she admits, “but for some reason it works.”

“Holiday” is due out Nov. 11. Confidence Man “embody everything an I OH YOU artist should,” comments label founder Johann Ponniah, “they make music we love, they’re ambitious, they challenge themselves and their audience, and they have an unwavering commitment to their vision. To officially welcome them to the I OH YOU family today is an absolute joy.”

I OH YOU, winner of best independent label at the 2021 ARIA Awards and an affiliate Mushroom Group, represents Confidence Man for Australia and New Zealand. The outfit remains with Heavenly/PIAS for U.K., Europe and North America and with Zync/Round Hill publishing worldwide (excluding ANZ).

Confidence Man’s as-yet unnamed second LP will be the followup to 2018’s Confident Music for Confident People, a 41-minute-long party-starter that caught the attention of groovers around the globe.

The LP won best independent dance/electronica album at the AIR Awards, and tracks from it were synced to campaigns for Apple and IKEA.

The following year, Confidence Man’s 2019 standalone track “Does It Make You Feel Good?” scored an NME Award nomination for best Australian song and they were shortlisted for best Australian band, a nod to their floor-filling powers.

Just as the act was ready to blow the barn-doors off, the pandemic arrived. And Confidence Man was grounded. The outfit did get away new music in 2020, the sassy “First Class Bitch,” though full-scale international touring was moth-balled.

“It was like three stages of grief that we went through,” explains Bones. “We felt like we were on the cusp, about to go on an epic tour, and then it all hit. The shit hit the fan. That was the first stage of loss. We worked through it, reached anger, and now we’re at the point where, ok, at least we’ve ultimately had the time to write an album in this endless lockdown.”

As borders reopen, and fans return to live shows, Confidence Man is ready to pick up where they left off. Australian tour dates are locked in, and shows across Europe and the U.K. (including the O2 Forum) are coming up.

“Luckily a lot of the opportunities that COVID crushed have been resurrected and 2022 and 2023 is shaping up to be another big step up for the band in the U.K. and Europe,” explains Stu McCullough, director and owner of Confidence Man’s management firm, Amplifire. “Some amazing shows opportunities to share soon.”

Planet is amped. “In the end, we were happy to have the gap because we actually got to write stuff,” she enthuses. “Everything we were meant to do in the past two years is now probably happening in the space of six to 12 months. So we’ll just have a very busy next year. We’ve got new costumes, and we’re getting ready to play new music which is awesome for us.”
