Watch Ghetts bring out Stormzy, Kano, Giggs and more at epic London show

Ghetts capped off his UK and Ireland tour with an explosive, star-studded show at London’s Roundhouse last night (November 20) – you can see footage below.

READ MORE: Ghetts: “There were definitely times when I could have thrown it all away”

The Plaistow rapper hit the road last week for a short run of dates in support of his Mercury Prize nominated album ‘Conflict Of Interest’, with stops in Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol.

For the finale, he played to a sold out crowd at Camden’s Roundhouse, delivering a set very different to the rest of his tour.

Besides his usual backing band – made up of keys, drums and bass – and Rude Kid behind the turntables for the show’s mid-section rave, Ghetts was joined by a string section, who perfectly complimented the show’s heartfelt moments and kept up with the rapper’s high octane energy and laser sharp lyricism.

He also performed on and in front of a massive tank, similar to the one he rode through the streets of London earlier this year during his battle with Mogwai for the UK’s Number One album.

The biggest moments from the night came, however, when Ghetts brought out an all-star cast to join him on stage, ranging from up-and-coming artists to superstars.

Longtime friend and collaborator Kano joined Ghetts for ‘Class Of Deja’, taken from Kano’s most recent album ‘Hoodies All Summer’; Giggs popped up for a lengthy rendition of ‘Crud’, which features on ‘Conflict Of Interest’; and the crowd erupted when Stormzy joined Ghetts for their collaboration ‘Skengman’, also from Ghetts’ latest record.

Other guests included Dizzee Rascal, Emeli Sandé, Pa Salieu, Backroad Gee, Shakka, Jaykae, Suspect, Aida Lee, and Prince Jaaken.

You can watch footage from the show below:

In a five-star review of ‘Conflict Of Interest’, NME‘s Kyann-Sian Williams said: “It’s a rare achievement to make an album as thoughtful and transparent as this; you need real lyrical talent to do so.

“The rapper’s third studio record and first on a major label, showcasing his growth over nearly two decades in the game, proves lyricism is in rude health.”

Watch Method Man and Pete Davidson rework Mark Cohn’s ‘Walking In Memphis’ into Staten Island anthem

Pete Davidson was joined by Marc Cohn, Method Man and Big Wet on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live to perform a parody of Cohn’s ‘Walking In Memphis’.

READ MORE: SNL heroes: stunning Saturday Night Live performances by your favourite stars

In the sketch, Davidson wears an “I <3 Staten Island” hoodie and muses about his hometown, reflecting on its fine sites including the bagel spots, pizza places and garbage dump you can see from space.

Marc Cohn appears briefly, stating his reluctance to join the parody, before fully committing and donning a similar hoodie to Davidson and Big Wet.

The group sing about Staten Island’s unique attractions (“I think this strip club used to be a McDonald’s/ And the zoo is shockingly small”) and mention local celebs like rap legends Wu-Tang Clan and member Method Man, who naturally joins in on the fun.

They all end the song aboard the Staten Island ferry, with Davidson saying “Wow look at the ocean, imagine if we could actually swim in it,” as Method Man points out a dead body floating in the water.

Cohn charted with ’Walking In Memphis’ in 1991, and won a Grammy that year for Best New Artist. The song was notably covered by Cher in 1995 for her 21st studio album ‘It’s A Man’s World’, debuting at number 11 on the UK Singles chart.

During the same episode of SNL, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings actor Simu Liu made his debut as host and Saweetie served as musical guest.

Elsewhere on SNLlast week’s musical guest Taylor Swift joined Pete Davidson in a sketch about “three sad virgins”, singing a parody song about a “sad Ron Weasley” who looks like a “Big Bird who lost all his feathers.”

It was also recently announced that Billie Eilish would be returning to the SNL stage next month, being both the musical guest and making her debut as host. Other notable artists who have performed double duty include Ariana GrandeTaylor SwiftBritney Spears and more.

Lorde performs while peeling fruit at the Guggenheim International Gala

Lorde performed an acoustic version of ‘Buzzcut Season’ while peeling fruit at the Guggenheim International Gala in New York – watch the video below.

READ MORE: Lorde: “I feel like I can see my world and myself a lot clearer now”

The singer attended the event on Wednesday (November 17), appearing on the red carpet wearing her hair as a scarf. She then took to the stage dressed in gold, with her live band wearing white suits and similarly peeling fruit during the performance.

The reason for the fruit is not entirely clear, although it is likely a reference to ‘Fallen Fruit’, which had its music video premiere earlier this month.

‘Buzzcut Season’ is a track from her 2013 album ‘Pure Heroine’, which features the singles ‘Tennis Court’, ‘Royals’ and ‘Team’. Lorde also reportedly performed songs from her new album ‘Solar Power’, including ‘Fallen Fruit’ and ‘Leader Of A New Regime’.

— Lorde fix (@Lorde_fix_media) November 18, 2021

‘Solar Power’ was released in August, with NME giving it five stars, writing that the follow-up to 2017’s ‘Melodrama’ “continues her winning streak, as she blazes a trail through the pop landscape with a beautiful paean to nature”.

Lorde also released two new tracks this month – ‘Hold No Grudge’ and ‘Helen of Troy’ – as part of the deluxe version of ‘Solar Power’. In an email to fans, she described the tracks as  “black sheep” but still “big tunes” despite not making the cut.

In other news, the singer recently announced that she would be postponing the Australian and New Zealand legs of her ‘Solar Power’ world tour to February and March 2023. The tour was due to kick off in New Zealand and Australia in March 2022, but these dates have now been pushed back, with uncertainty around the easing of border restrictions, and the recent outbreak of COVID-19 in New Zealand cited for the postponement.

“I am beyond devastated to be postponing these shows,” she commented in an accompanying statement. “Starting the tour in New Zealand was always really important to me, and would have been a huge high.”

Adele reveals that original version of ‘I Drink Wine’ was 15 minutes long

Adele has revealed that ‘I Drink Wine’ was originally much longer than the six-minute track that appears on new record ’30’.

READ MORE: Adele – ‘30’ album review: dependable pop titan finally mixes things up

’30’, the follow-up to 2015’s ’25’, arrived on November 19, having been previously previewed by the comeback single ‘Easy On Me’ as well as ‘Hold On’. ‘I Drink Wine’ is the seventh track on the record and details the struggles of making a relationship work.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Adele revealed that the six-minute track was longer but had to be cut down because her label said it wouldn’t get played on the radio. She said: “[The label] was like, ‘Listen, everyone loves you, but no one’s playing a 15-minute song on radio.’”

Adele previously confirmed that the new material delves into the aftermath of her 2019 divorce from Simon Konecki, explaining that ’30’ was her most personal and “sensitive” album to date.

Ahead of the release of the record, Adele shared an intimate performance of ’30’ cut ‘To Be Loved’ on social media. She had previously debuted ‘Hold On’, ‘I Drink Wine’ and ‘Love Is A Game’ during her CBS TV special One Night Only, which included a new sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe, Adele said that there was a point where she considered not releasing ’30’, commenting: “There were moments when I was writing these songs – and even when I was mixing them and stuff like that – where I was like, ‘Maybe I don’t need to put this album out. Like maybe I should write another.’”

She continued, “I’m never going into the studio to be like, ‘Right, I need another hit’. It’s not like that for me. When something is more powerful and overwhelming than me, I like to go to a studio because it’s normally a basement and there’s no fucking windows and no reception, so no one can get ahold of me.”

In a three-star review of ’30’NME wrote: “This devastating level of honesty means that, despite its more experimental moments, ‘30’ still winds up feeling like trademark Adele, in its own way, most of the time. And after fair accusations of playing it safe musically in the past, it’s refreshing to see the pop titan treading braver territory – even if the hit-rate isn’t 100 per cent.”

Tonight (November 21), Adele will perform a UK TV special An Audience With Adele, filmed at the London Palladium. It airs on ITV at 7.25pm.

Watch Boygenius play first show in three years for San Francisco charity event

Boygenius played at a San Francisco charity event on Friday (November 19), marking the first time they’ve performed together since 2018.

READ MORE: How guitar-smashing badass Phoebe Bridgers is putting the anarchy back into music

The indie-rock supergroup – comprising Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus – took part in the one-off benefit gig at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society, with all proceeds from the event going to the Bay Area nonprofit Bread & Roses.

According to their website, the organisation “produce[s] free, live music and entertainment for Bay Area children, teens, adults, and elders who don’t have the ability to easily experience the uplifting power of the arts in any other way”.

The trio performed a 12-song set that comprised of a handful of their individual solo tracks and the entirety of their self-titled Boygenius EP.

You can check out the setlist and see footage from Boygenius’ first performance in three years below:

‘Blacktop’ (Julien Baker song)
‘Kyoto’ (Phoebe Bridgers song)

‘Favor’ (Julien Baker song)
‘Salt in the Wound’
‘Ketchum, ID’

Baker linked back up with her Boygenius bandmates earlier this year, featuring Bridgers and Dacus on the track ‘Favor’ from her third album, ‘Little Oblivions’. That album was released back in February to a four-star review from NME, and also featured singles ‘Faith Healer’ and ‘Hardline’.

Dacus released her third album, ‘Home Video’, in June. Also earning four stars from NME, it featured the singles ‘Thumbs’, ‘Hot & Heavy’, ‘VBS’ and ‘Brando’. 2022 will see Dacus tour Europe and the UK, with a 20-date run set to kick off in March.

Bridgers has kept incredibly busy in the year-and-a-half following the release of her second album, ‘Punisher’, launching her own record label (Saddest Factory) and dropping the ‘Copycat Killer’ EP of reworks. ‘Punisher’ earned itself a five-star review, and was previewed by the singles ‘Garden Song’, ‘Kyoto’, ‘I See You’ and ‘I Know The End’.

The trio’s most recent outing as Boygenius was their 2018 self-titled EP. NME called it “a record that leaves you yearning for more” in a five-star review, adding that it “would be astonishing regardless of the length of time it took to make, but it becomes even more so when you learn these songs were created in a matter of days”.
