Cardi B Shares a Glimpse of Her ‘Morning Routine’ as a Mom of 2

Just like any mom of two young children, Cardi B sure is busy.

The star took to Instagram Stories bright and early on Tuesday morning (Jan. 4) to share that she was “AWAKE,” and “thinkin bout doing a story of my mourning [sic] routines.”

“Let’s see if my hand are not that tight [sic] up,” she added as a disclaimer in the Stories viewed by Billboard.

The 29-year-old “Up” rapper’s first update began at 6:03 a.m., after she already fed her and Offset‘s newborn son his first bottle for the day and was put back to sleep. Cardi shared the new bottle she was preparing for him “when he wakes up again in a few.”

Cardi’s motherly instincts were right, as the baby was up and enjoying another bottle at 7:57 a.m. Keeping his face out of frame, Cardi posted a video of her boy’s adorable feet moving around while he cooed. “Now he’s awake with full energy while I have NONE,” she wrote. “Feed, burped, changed. Waiting on his morning poop thooo…. I know it’s coming.”

And she was correct, once again. “Literally in my last video I said I was waiting on my morning poop,” she said in a clip posted four minutes later. “I know this baby too well. The morning poop already came. Literally four minutes after posting. I’m gonna just wait until he finishes.”

Cardi’s busy morning continued less than half an hour later, when her three-year-old daughter Kulture and Offset’s six-year-old daughter Kaelea woke up. The rapper shared a video of the girls playing on their iPads, and a follow-up of Kulture sitting on the sink and brushing her teeth.

“She normally wakes up at, like, 9 or 10, but she’s up now,” Cardi revealed, before adding that the late wake-up time is not Kulture’s “normal schedule,” as she typically goes to school in the mornings. “But we in Georgia right now, so, yeah, it’s a little different,” she added.

After that, the morning chaos was a bit too busy, and Cardi cut her IG Story morning routine short. “Sorry, can’t do more Insta stories,” she wrote on a blank slide. “It gets busy quick. NEED BOTH MY HANDS.”

Back in September, Cardi B and Offset welcomed their second child together. The “I Like It” rapper took to Instagram to share a sweet family photo of her new baby boy. In the snapshot, Cardi and Offset are sitting under a Louis Vuitton blanket in a hospital bed as they proudly gaze at their newborn. The couple has yet to announce the name of their bundle of joy.

Back in July 2018, Cardi and Offset welcomed three-year-old daughter Kulture.

Concert Archive Wolfgang’s Wins Key Ruling In Copyright Battle

A federal appeals court has sided with internet concert archive Wolfgang’s Vault and ruled that two large groups of musicians cannot team up as a class action to sue the site for copyright infringement over bootleg recordings.

In a decision issued Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the lawsuit against Wolfgang’s could not proceed as a class action, since thorny questions for each particular accuser – like whether they had granted consent for their individual performance– would predominate over common issues.

The ruling will send the case back to a trial court, where Wolfgang’s will now only face only claims from a single musician who filed the lawsuit, Greg Kihn, best known for his 1983 hit song “Jeopardy.”

Once labeled one of “the most important collection of rock memorabilia and recordings ever assembled” by the Wall Street Journal, Wolfgang’s allows users to stream audio and video from concerts by the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, and hundreds of others. The service was created by acquiring the archives of classic concert promoters, including the legendary Bill Graham.

Unsurprisingly, the service has faced copyright litigation for years. Wolfgang’s was sued in the 2000s by The Doors, Carlos Santana and many other artists, resulting in a settlement. It was sued again in 2015 by major music publishers, resulting in a $2.5 million award against Wolfgang’s in 2020.

The current lawsuit was filed in 2017 by Kihn, who had several hits in the 1980s with his The Greg Kihn Band. Like previous cases, he claimed that Wolfgang’s did not have a license to stream footage of his concerts. But he also filed his case as a class action, seeking to represent thousands of other musicians whose concert footage appeared on the site.

In 2020, a federal judge granted Kihn so-called class certification – an important procedural step that meant the case could formally proceed as a class action on behalf of many other artists. The judge certified two groups of plaintiffs, one covering performers and another covering songwriters.

Monday’s appellate ruling overturned that decision. Class actions can only be certified if common issues among the accusers “predominate” over individual questions, and the Ninth Circuit said Kihn had not met that tough standard. In particular, the appeals court cited tricky questions about whether each individual artist had authorized the recording and performance of its concert footage.

“Those agreements in fact vary as to the artists, performances, and rights they purport to cover,” the Ninth Circuit wrote in a footnote. “Determining whether any performer or composer consented to the recording of live performances at numerous events over a period of decades will thus require individualized analysis.”

Attorneys for both sides — Melissa Weiner of Pearson Simon & Warshaw LLP for Kihn and Michael Elkin of Winston & Strawn LLP for Wolfgang’s – did not immediately return requests for comment on Tuesday.

Symphonic Raises $37M to Boost Acquisitions, Expansion

Independent music distribution and label services company Symphonic Distribution has attracted $37 million in a series B funding round. Led by Philadelphia-based firm NewSpring Growth, the round also included Ballast Point Ventures, which invested in Symphonic’s $4 million venture raise in 2017.

Symphonic, based in Tampa, helps labels and artists distribute music, videos, ringtones and more to hundreds of retail and streaming platforms. The company said the new funding will be used to develop new tech and to complete acquisitions, as well as expand headcount across existing and new markets.

In the last 12 months, Symphonic expanded into Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, and was one of several distributors to partner with Tidal as part of its user-centric payment model announced in November. Also in late 2021, the company partnered with Found.ee, a digital advertising platform.

“On behalf of all of the team members of Symphonic, I can’t put into words how excited we are about the next chapter,” remarked Jorge Brea, Symphonic’s CEO. “The partnership with NewSpring, along with our existing investor, Ballast Point Ventures, will help position Symphonic as a strong market leader in independent music technology, services and distribution. This investment will enable us to invest more in our clients, our technology platform, strategic initiatives, intellectual property and other acquisitions.”

Chartbreaker: How GAYLE Spelled Out Her Success With Breakup Smash ‘abcdefu’

In 2018, Arthouse Music Publishing CEO Kara DioGuardi pulled GAYLE’s name out of a hat during a songwriting pop-up event in Nashville and heard the rising star sing for the first time. “She had this presence and poise that I’ve never seen from a 14-year-old,” DioGuardi remembers. “I was struck by everything. [And when] the event ended, she imprinted on me.”

Nearly a decade before GAYLE would scale the Billboard charts with her breakthrough hit “abcdefu,” the Plano, Texas native attended her first concert — an Aretha Franklin show, when she was just nine years old — that cemented her own desire for a similar future. “Having the passion for singing and performing was rooted in Aretha Franklin’s [music],” GAYLE tells Billboard, also citing Nina Simone and Julia Michaels as her earliest musical influences. A year later, she opted for homeschooling to focus on music, and at the same time, started taking trips to Nashville to network — ultimately leading to her run-in with DioGuardi, who by the end of 2018 signed GAYLE to a songwriting and development deal with Arthouse.

GAYLE built a modest following with a handful of independently-released singles over the next few years, including “Dumbass” and “Orange Peel,” but it was her angsty indie-pop track “Z” that put her on an international radar. The visual was uploaded by a Korean YouTube account in May 2020, translated with subtitles, and racked up more than 700,000 views. “I was 15, so I was like ‘This is awesome!’” GAYLE recalls, her voice excitedly jumping up an octave.

The traction led to attention from Warner Music’s Korean team, and subsequently, Atlantic Records stateside, thanks to a boost from DioGuardi. In January 2021, Atlantic president, A&R, Pete Ganbarg (who first met DioGuardi 20 years prior and doubles as the president of ATCO Records) signed GAYLE to a record deal with the label that signed Aretha Franklin nearly 60 years ago.

“I really love the development of Atlantic,” GAYLE says. “When they sign an artist, they’re not like, ‘Let’s release music right now.’ They look at somebody’s potential and are like, ‘We want to nurture and build this, and once you’re ready, let’s start putting out music.’”

GAYLE photographed Dec. 10, 2021 in Brooklyn.

By the summer, GAYLE felt ready. She started teasing a debut single on TikTok that summer titled “abcdefu” that unapologetically gives the middle finger to an ex. “We knew she had come up with a song that had a real, relatable concept, so we wanted to make sure that people first heard it organically,” Ganbarg says. “[From there], it started to react.”

In August, the swaggering pop-punk breakup track officially released, collecting 88,000 streams in the U.S. in its first week, according to Ganbarg — though it initially put up more eye-popping numbers globally, with Ganbarg saying it first took off in South Korea and China, followed by Taiwan and Malaysia and finally Europe and the U.S.

The following month, in September, GAYLE released three additional versions of “abcdefu,” including renditions named after a different vibe (“angrier” and “chill”) as well as its original demo. The maneuver extended the song’s staying power among listeners — a familiar move employed by chart-topping artists such as Taylor Swift (“All Too Well”) and BTS (“Butter”). “The strategy behind releasing multiple versions of the song came from GAYLE herself,” Ganbarg says. “It’s amazing to see such a young artist who really understands her audience and what they want, sometimes way before we do.”

“Every version brought something different,” adds GAYLE. “I came to Atlantic wanting to do [multiple releases]. They didn’t question it. That’s something I’ve really enjoyed about working with Atlantic: They don’t tell me what to do. I’m too much of a control freak, I’m too stubborn. They’re like, ‘Tell us what you want to do, and we’ll help you do it.’”

By December, GAYLE scored her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 when “abcdefu” debuted at No. 51, simultaneously topping Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart. In the week of Dec. 16, the track collected 78.5 million on-demand streams in the U.S. and 312 million on-demand streams globally, according to MRC Data. The hit has since reached No. 15 on the Hot 100, as well as a No. 2 peak on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart dated Jan. 1.

“I feel an overwhelming amount of gratitude for people [relating to] the story of when I was really hurt and angry, [but] didn’t even know I was allowed to be angry,” she says. “[I’m] trying to give people a safe space to be angry and process their own emotions — I want to create a more accepting culture and more allowance for your feelings.”

Fueled by her exponential year-end rise, GAYLE is now focused on the year ahead: she’ll perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Jan. 5, and is working on finishing her next releases, including the cheeky upcoming track “ur just horny” along with her album set to arrive in the spring. As DioGuardi says: “If you think that she’s just ‘abcdefu,’ you’re going to be very surprised. She’s much bigger than just one song.”

A version of this story will appear in the Jan. 15, 2022, issue of Billboard.

Jack Antonoff says Bleachers’ fourth album will land in 2022

Jack Antonoff has confirmed he will release the fourth Bleachers album by the end of 2022.

READ MORE: Bleachers: “This album is about wanting to hold joy, and not understanding why you can’t”

The simple declaration came in a Tweet posted on Sunday (January 2), with Antonoff writing, “i am going to put out a bleachers album this year”.

i am going to put out a bleachers album this year

— jackantonoff (@jackantonoff) January 1, 2022

His last record with Bleachers, ‘Take The Sadness Out Of Saturday Night’, was released last July, just over four years after ‘Gone Now’ came out in June 2017. Prior to that, there was a three year gap between ‘Gone Now’ and Bleachers’ 2014 debut, ‘Strange Desire’.

Fans shouldn’t start holding their breaths for LP4 just yet, though – as longtime followers will note, Antonoff declared he would drop ‘Take The Sadness Out Of Saturday Night’ (then untitled) in January of 2020, after teasing it all the way back in March 2019.

Before its eventual release, ‘Take The Sadness Out Of Saturday Night’ spawned four singles, starting with ‘Chinatown’ – a landmark collab with Bruce Springsteen, the video for which allegedly saw Antonoff break the law – in November of 2020. ‘Stop Making This Hurt’ landed in May 2021, followed in quick succession by ‘How Dare You Want More’ and the Lana Del Ray-featuring ‘Secret Life’.

In a four-star review of the album, NME’s Rhian Daly declared that “Bleachers’ third album is their strongest effort so far – the most cohesive, with the most poignant lyricism and musical moments. It moves away from the big synths and ‘80s pop of its predecessors in favour of the more organic sounds found on some of the pop records Antonoff has produced of late, and the strings and acoustic guitars bring out the album’s emotions more vividly.”

Bleachers also recently released of ‘Live At Electric Lady’, a nine-track LP of songs recorded live at the titular New York studio. Among its standouts were new versions of ‘Chinatown’ and ‘What’d I Do With All This Faith?’ (the latter featuring guest vocals from St. Vincent), as well as covers of The Waterboys’ ‘The Whole Of The Moon’ and The Cars’ ‘Drive’.

Antonoff has also kept busy as one of pop’s most in-demand producers, working closely with such heavyweights as Taylor Swift, Lorde and Lana Del Ray on their recent outings.

Samuel Ross Teases Upcoming Collaboration With ROA

It’s been quite a while since A-COLD-WALL‘s last collaborative effort. While their vulcanized Chuck Taylor did restock this past Holiday season, nothing new has come from the mind of Samuel Ross in a while. But that may finally change in a couple months’ time as the designer has just teased an upcoming partnership with none other than ROA.

Arguably popularized by ALYX and its founder Matthew M. Williams, ROA is an Italian footwear brand known well for their technical, outdoors-inspired designs. And though replete with notable silhouettes like the Neal and Andreas, these offerings serve only as inspiration for Ross’s DUOMO and STRAND. The latter, which is a far more straightforward hiker, proffers robust fabrics, metallic hooks, and number of reflective details. The DUOMO, in heavier contrast, forgoes its lace unit for a strapped down covering; this shield is then overlaid with branding and materials similar in finish to the aforementioned.

Enjoy a quick look at the two pairs below. Sit tight for word on pricing and release date, which should surface very soon.

In other news, images of the Air Jordan 1 Varsity Red have surfaced.
