Elton John and Ed Sheeran Ring in the Holidays With Joyful ‘Merry Christmas’ on ‘Kimmel’

Elton John and Ed Sheeran rang in the holidays in style on Thursday night (Dec. 16) on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with a glittery, joy-filled run through their holiday single, “Merry Christmas.” The song, which dropped last week and immediately topped the singles chart in the UK, is an upbeat, cheery ode to all the best things about the season.

“So kiss me under the mistletoe/ Pour out the wine, let’s toast and pray for December snow/ I know there’s been pain this year, but it’s time to let it go/ Next year, you never know/ But for now, Merry Christmas,” Sheeran sang while strumming his acoustic guitar.

John, seated at a red baby grand piano, joined in on the first verse, harmonizing with Ed on the lyrics about embracing the good times. “We’ll dance in the kitchen while embers glow/ We’ve both known love, but the love we got is the bеst of all/ I wish you could see you through my eyes, then you would know/ My God, you look bеautiful/ Right now, Merry Christmas,” they sang.

The pair, who co-wrote the track, were accompanied by a full band and a trio of back-up singers in shimmering dresses on a massive soundstage decked out with Christmas trees for the performance that benefitted Sheeran’s Suffolk Music Foundation and the L.A.-based AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The song is John’s second holiday tune and the sequel to his beloved 1973 classic “Step Into Christmas.” It also debuted on multiple Billboard charts dated Dec. 18, launching at No. 2 on Holiday Digital Song Sales, No. 4 on Digital Song Sales, No. 10 on Billboard Global Excl. U.S., No. 20 on the Billboard Global 200 and No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100. With it, John earned his 70th career Hot 100 hit, becoming the 23rd artist to reach the mark since the list originated in August 1958. It’s his third of 2021, following this year’s “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” with Dua Lipa, and his featured turn on Lil Nas X’s “One of Me.”

Toni Cornell Tributes Late Dad Chris With Moving ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ Cover on ‘Tonight Show’

Late Soundgarden/Audioslave singer Chris Cornell‘s 17-year-old daughter, Toni Cornell paid tribute to her dad on The Tonight Show on Thursday night (Dec. 16) with a moving cover of the heart-rending power ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

The song, which appeared on the posthumous 2020 Cornell covers compilation No One Sings Like You Anymore, Vol. 1 — which also featured the late rock icon’s takes on songs by Janis Joplin, Harry Nilsson, Guns N’ Roses, John Lennon and ELO, among others — was originally written by Prince for his side group The Family and made famous by Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash version.

Accompanied by piano, acoustic guitar and a string quartet, the teen swayed slightly as she gripped the mic stand with both hands and nailed the moving homage to loss, imbuing it with a  slight country twang. “It’s been so lonely without you here/ Like a bird without a song,” Toni sang in a steady, strong voice as the strings swelled behind her. “Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling/ Tell me, baby, where did I go wrong/ I could put my arms around every boy I see/ But they’d only remind me of you.”

Back in 2018, Toni shared her dad’s cover of “Nothing” to celebrate Father’s Day, writing, “Daddy, I love you and miss you so much. You were the best father anyone could ask for. Our relationship was so special, and you were always there for me. You gave me courage when I didn’t have any. You believed in me when I didn’t. I miss your love everyday. Recording this song with you was a special and amazing experience I wish I could repeat 100 times over and I know you would too. Happy Father’s Day daddy, nothing compares to you.”

Cornell, 52, died in May 2017 after being found dead in Detroit hotel room following a Soundgarden show at the Fox Theatre earlier that night.

Suspect Pleads Not Guilty in Shooting Death of Jacqueline Avant, Wife of Music Legend Clarence Avant

The man suspected of fatally shooting Jacqueline Avant in her Beverly Hills home entered a plea of not guilty on Thursday (Dec. 16). Aariel Maynor, 29, of Los Angeles, is charged with one count each of murder, attempted murder and felon with a firearm as well as two counts of residential burglary with person present.

Maynor is accused of breaking into the home of the 81-year-old philanthropist and wife of legendary music executive Clarence Avant on Dec. 1 and fatally shooting her, according to authorities. Maynor also allegedly shot at a security guard at the location; the guard was not injured.

Maynor’s next court appearance is Jan. 19.

Maynor was apprehended a little more than an hour after the Avant shooting on Dec. 1 when Los Angeles police responded to another reported shooting at a residence. Police said they found Maynor in the backyard suffering from a gunshot wound to his foot. Following an investigation, it was determined that a burglary occurred at that residence and that Maynor accidentally shot himself, authorities said.

After Maynor was charged on Dec. 6, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said, “Mrs. Avant was a treasured member of our community. Her generosity and good will touched so many lives. My office is working closely with the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments in the investigation and prosecution of this case. We must continue to work together to hold accountable the people who commit violent crimes against our community.”

Following Avant’s killing, per her wishes, Avant’s survivors announced the Jacqueline Avant Memorial Fund for the new MLK Children’s Center, located in South Los Angeles in the Watts/Willowbrook neighborhood.

David Bowie’s ‘Hunky Dory’ is getting a special 50th anniversary reissue

A 50th anniversary edition of David Bowie‘s fourth album ‘Hunky Dory’ has been announced – listen to ‘Changes (2021 Alternative Mix)’ below.

READ MORE: An oral history of David Bowie’s ‘Blackstar’ – five years on from his death

Produced by Ken Scott and Bowie, the classic 1971 record was released 50 years ago today (December 17) and features the singles ‘Life On Mars?’, ‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ and the aforementioned ‘Changes’.

To mark the half-century milestone, a new take on the latter track has been shared ahead of a special vinyl picture disc reissue of ‘Hunky Dory’. The new physical edition will arrive via Parlophone on January 7, 2022 – the day before what would have been Bowie’s 75th birthday (January 8).

“The new version of ‘Changes’ is a fresh look at David’s classic,” explained Ken Scott in a statement.

“When listening to the original multi-track I discovered a few things that I had eliminated from the original mix and also a completely different sax solo at the end. It was those things that led me to try a new mix, trying for a slightly harder, more contemporary edge to it.”

‘Changes (2021 Alternative Mix)’ arrives with an accompanying new lyric video featuring previously-unseen photographs from the ‘Hunky Dory’ sessions. Tune in above.

As for the forthcoming reissue, the picture disc vinyl will boast the 2015 vinyl remaster of ‘Hunky Dory’ and includes a poster featuring the annotated back cover art of the album.

You can pre-order ‘Hunky Dory’ here and see the preview images below.

“It’s an honour to be able to continue to share David Bowie’s music with the world,” Bowie’s longtime keyboardist Mike Garson told Rolling Stone.

“I’m excited for everyone to be able to experience this very special show we’ve got in store in celebration of what would have been David’s 75th birthday with the bandmates he recorded and performed with, plus a great group of guest artists who he was such an influence to.”

Listen to Sleaford Mods’ cover of Yazoo’s ‘Don’t Go’

Sleaford Mods have shared a cover of Yazoo‘s ‘Don’t Go’ – listen to it below.

READ MORE: Sleaford Mods live in Nottingham: bewildering joy at duo’s first-ever headline arena show

Mods frontman Jason Williamson shared a video of himself dancing to the track, which also arrived on streaming platforms today (December 17).

The song has been a fan-favourite of the duo’s live sets for some time and was included in their recent hometown show in Nottingham, which was also their first headline gig at an arena.

All I want for Christmas is to cover ‘Don’t Go’ by Yazoo. Out now on all streaming platforms for your kitchen disco pleasure, me owd’s.

— Sleaford Mods (@sleafordmods) December 17, 2021

Reviewing the gig, NME wrote: “The Mods’ live show is a bewildering joy from start finish, and the key factor is that you’ve never seen anything like it. Don’t waste time trying to compare it to anything else. “Life’s too fucking short,” ends Williamson. “We are the Sleaford Mods”. It is what it is: real life, loud, made in Nottingham.”

The group embarked on a UK tour last month in support of their recent album ‘Spare Ribs’, with the dates beginning in Manchester and running until early December with a final show in Brighton.

Meanwhile, Williamson recently made a surprise cameo in new Olivia Colman-starring HBO miniseries Landscapers.

Colman stars alongside David Thewlis (Harry Potter) in the show, which premiered on Sky Atlantic last night (December 7) and tells the story of a couple in late 1990s Nottingham who killed and buried Colman’s character Susan’s parents undetected for over 15 years.

A synopsis for the show reads: “Landscapers tells a unique love story involving a seemingly ordinary couple who become the focus of an extraordinary investigation when a couple of dead bodies are discovered in the back garden of a house in Nottingham.

“Mild-mannered husband and wife Susan (Colman) and Christopher Edwards (Thewlis) have been on the run from reality for over 15 years…their role in a terrible crime that remained undiscovered for over a decade begins to emerge into the light.”

After the show aired, many pointed out a cameo from Williamson, which the frontman himself later confirmed in a tweet.
