The “Nike Athletic Club” Collection Adds A Letterman Look To The Air Force 1 Low

In addition to high-profile collaborations, the Nike Air Force 1‘s 40th anniversary celebration is set to include in-line collections. Among them, the retro-inspired “Nike Athletic Club” roster.

Also featuring other Nike Sportswear classics like the Air Huarache and Air Max 90, the forthcoming collection has recently delivered a “LT Smoke Grey” and “Hyper Royal” makeup onto the low-top version of Bruce Kilgore’s famed 1982 design. High-quality suede covers most of the sneaker’s upper, with profile swooshes interrupting in both material and color scheme. Non-standard “AF-1”-branding on the upper heel panel indulge in a vibrant blue tone that harkens back to sportswear of decades past (namely varsity jackets). The collection’s name is stamped onto the top of the tongue and on the sock-liner, as with other entries. Underfoot, sole units further nod to the past with their predominantly “Sail” styling.

Enjoy official images of the pair here below, and anticipate a launch via Nike.com come springtime.

In related sneaker news, the Air Jordan 3 is set to launch in a handful of new colorways before 2022 ends.

The adidas Forum ’84 Hi Presents A Realistic “Vintage” Make-Up

Vintage as a design concept is certainly nothing new. Nike, for example, has employed aged colorways throughout the past few decades, indoctrinating silhouettes like the Dunk High and Dunk Low into the “Vintage Pack.” But where this adidas Forum ’84 Hi sets itself apart is in its sense of realism, opting to distress its upper in the image of pairs long-forgotten.

The colorway only creates a deeper sense of immersion, its whites and blues relatively faithful to one of the silhouette’s OGs. And over top these colored and color-bereft leathers lies scuffs, scratches, and various marks, each proffering a yellow shade like that of an antique. The midsole and outsole receive the same execution to a more dramatic degree, both deceptively worn and dusty across their entire exteriors.

For a closer look at the Forum ’84 Hi “Vintage,” check out the official images below. A release date is likely near, with sizes to appear on adidas.com and at select retailers soon.

In other news, a Neutral Grey New Balance 550 is coming soon.

Cordae’s New Album Will Feature Eminem, Stevie Wonder & More: See the Tracklist

Cordae unveiled the tracklist for his upcoming album From a Bird’s Eye View on Monday (Jan. 10), and it’s packed to the brim with A-list guest features.

The 14-track LP, which is due out Friday (Jan. 14) via Atlantic Records, features collaborations with everyone from Eminem (“Parables [Remix]”) and Roddy Ricch (lead single turned bonus track “Gifted”), to Gunna (“Today”), Lil Wayne (latest single “Sinister”) and Stevie Wonder (“Champagne Glasses” also with Freddie Gibbs and Nas).

Ahead of the album’s release, the one-time YBN rapper also stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, giving fans a taste of “Sinister” and album cut “Chronicles,” and sitting on the couch for an interview with the late-night host.

“Yeah, OK, my flow sinister/ This ain’t rap music, this straight literature/ Small minded, all your ideas miniature/ They tend to hate on you when they can’t get rid of ya/ I ain’t going nowhere, twenty year career minimum/ Call Hit-Boy for beats, ask for ten of ’em/ I don’t follow trends, I swing the pendulum/ If she real bad, you know I’m gon’ give her some,” he rapped on the chorus of the former track sans Wayne. He then debuted the melodic “Chronicles,” which not only name drops Beyoncé, but cleverly interpolates “Say My Name,” her 1999 smash hit with Destiny’s Child.

From a Bird’s Eye View will serve as a follow-up to Cordae’s 2021 holdover EP Just Until…, as well as his first studio set since launching his own record label Hi Level back in June.

Check out the full tracklist for the album, as well as Cordae’s Fallon performance and interview below.

Concert Venues Are Going Mixed-Use to Diversify Revenue and Offer Artists Better Deals

In November, Brooklyn Bowl opened its fourth location in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood with a party featuring local talent Soulive, George Porter Jr. and Questlove. Following existing locations in Brooklyn, Las Vegas and Nashville, Brooklyn Bowl’s latest combination bowling alley/performance space was the first launched in partnership with Live Nation — demonstrating the faith of the world’s largest promoter in a growing model of mixed-use concert venues that allows owners to diversify revenue streams in the tight-margined live industry.

“When we came up with Brooklyn Bowl, there were already so many great venues in New York like Irving Plaza or Bowery Ballroom,” says Pete Shapiro, who opened the original Brooklyn Bowl in 2009. “You’ve got to add an element to it, otherwise it’s just a stage and a bar and an open floor.”

The combination of concerts with bowling and a food menu from famed restaurant group Blue Ribbon decreases Brooklyn Bowl’s reliance on ticket sales and allows the venue to offer more lucrative deals to artists in a competitive market. The additional attractions bring customers to Brooklyn Bowl locations every night of the week, and Shapiro says they generate 400 to 500 walk-up ticket sales per show for venues ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 capacity. The various locations have hosted such high-profile acts as The 1975, Beck, Jason Isbell, Fletcher, twenty one pilots, Tame Impala and more.

“We try to keep our door charge low to increase our walk-ups. No one walks up to the Bowery Ballroom,” says Shapiro, who adds that walk-ups also boost discovery, with new fans stumbling across acts performing in the same building. “It’s an easy decision for managers to say, ‘Play Brooklyn Bowl.’” The deals are sometimes better, too. The club’s original location in Brooklyn, for example, allows artists to keep 100% of merchandise sales since the venue generates enough income from its other revenue streams to make up the difference.

As the concert business strives to emerge from the pandemic, interest in this kind of diversified business model is growing. Austin’s 1852, Tribe Supper Club in Chicago and Lori’s Roadhouse outside Cincinnati all opened in 2021 as combination venue/restaurants, while Against the Grain opened its newest brewery/concert venue in Louisville, Ky.

In September, former Live Nation New York president Anthony Makes opened the 500-capacity Brooklyn Made venue in the Bushwick neighborhood, which also includes the bar/restaurant Connie’s and the café Standing Room. Among the building’s three businesses, Brooklyn Made is open from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily for coffee, music, food and drinks. With four rooftop decks, the property also provides pandemic-friendly outdoor spaces for people to gather. Like with Brooklyn Bowl, the additional revenue streams amount to better deals for artists and allows Brooklyn Made to share more ticket revenue with acts.

“We’re just covering our bare minimum production expenses and giving everything else to the artist,” Makes told Billboard in September. “The deals we are doing are pretty unheard of.”

Makes believes the multiuse property model has room to grow. While the Bushwick venue will remain the “heart” of the business, Makes says he’s already looking at larger spaces with 1,000- to 2,500- seat capacities that can deliver the same all-day amenities for artists and fans. With 30 years of experience working for Live Nation, AEG and The Bowery Presents, Makes says the traditional venue model where doors open at 7 p.m. for an 8 o’clock show with headliners on at 10 isn’t a desirable one for Brooklyn Made, whose promotion division launched mid-pandemic in July 2020.

“I never wanted that kind of structure for [Brooklyn Made],” he says. “I want people to be there all day.”

Such mixed-use buildings are easier to design from the ground up, but established venues have been similarly expanding their operations. Arizona’s 300-capacity Rebel Lounge opened the Reap & Sow Coffee Bar in October 2020 to serve coffee and pastries from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and drinks in the evening. The coffee shop — created with friends and Driftwood Coffee owners Luke Bentley and Lance Linderman — was originally a way to create just enough revenue to keep the business afloat while Rebel Lounge owner Steve Chilton waited on federal funds from the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, but it has proved profitable enough to keep around. Since opening the coffee shop, Chilton says Rebel Lounge has attracted more neighbors to the building, and the venue benefits from having staff present all day to receive mail or open doors for bands arriving for soundcheck.

“It’s not a huge money maker or something that we could live on, [but] it’s a nice little ancillary income and every dollar helps,” says Chilton. “And it has some positives that aren’t just the bottom line: It brings more life to the building and makes us more a part of the community.”

Since concerts resumed at Rebel Lounge, the venue has been forced to accommodate the coffee shop’s hours by scheduling later soundchecks and door times, but Chilton notes many acts are showing up early anyway. “They show up early, get a cup of coffee and hang out here,” he says. “Right now, it’s going well, and the hope is that it lasts. We’re going to try it as long as it makes sense.”

Demi Lovato Shows Off a New Industrial Ear Piercing After Getting Skull Tattoo

Demi Lovato continues to make changes to their ever-evolving look. On Monday (Jan. 10), the “Melon Cake” singer posted a video to their Instagram Story of them with a new accessory — a silver ear piercing.

“New piercing by @mrprickrichink,” the 29-year-old captioned a video of them showing off the new accessory. The artist in question, Daniel Ruiz of Rich Ink Tattoo, confirmed that he did Lovato’s piercing. “Yes @ddlovato has a new piercing By @mrprickrichink me #industrialpiercing,” he captioned a repost of Lovato’s video, along with several other piercing-related hashtags.

Lovato’s new piercing follows their recent tattoo of a large black spider on the side of their head. The singer revealed the ink, done by celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo, via their Instagram Story on Jan. 8.

“It was Grandmother Spider who taught us many things,” Lovato explained of the inspiration for the ink. “She taught us about pottery and weaving. She taught us about fire and light and dark. She taught us that we are all connected on the web — each one of us having our place in this world.” The two-time Grammy nominee also revealed a newly shaved head on Christmas Day in a short FaceTime-recorded video by photographer Angelo Kritikos.

Lovato cleared their Instagram feed shortly after shaving their head, with the exception of a single post of them showing off the new buzz cut. It’s currently unclear if Lovato is entering a new music era — they released their seventh studio album, Dancing With the Devil…The Art of Starting Over, on April 2. It peaked at No. 2 and spent eight weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.

See Lovato’s new piercing below.

Burke Shelley, Budgie Singer/Bassist Dies at 71

Burke Shelley, singer/bassist for 1970s Welsh hard rock band Budgie, has died at age 71. In a Facebook post on Monday (Jan. 10) attributed to the heavy metal pioneer’s daughter, Ela Shelley, she wrote, “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my father, John Burke Shelley. He passed away this evening in his sleep at Heath Hospital in Cardiff, his birth town. He was 71 years old.”

The notice, which was also attributed to the musician’s other three children — Osian, Dimitri and Nathaniel — did not disclose a cause of death for the rock howler who is credited with helping to usher in the modern metal sound via the trio’s bottom-heavy, urgent attack. John Burke Shelley, born on April 10, 1950 in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales, was the focal point of the group, with a studious, straight-laced look highlighted by oversized glasses and a preference for tailored vests that was at odds with his band’s thundering, aggressive sound.

The band, which also originally featured Tony Bourge on guitar and drummer Ray Phillips, was formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1967 as Hills Contemporary Grass. By the next year they’d switched the name to Budgie, a placid-sounding moniker that paid tribute to the nickname for a colorful Australian parakeet whose pleasant look was, like Burke’s stage image, the antithesis of the group’s hard-charging sound.

Their self-titled MCA Records debut album, produced by Black Sabbath collaborator Rodger Bain, was released in 1971; the collection included the song “Crash Course in Brain Surgery,” which, in a sign of Budgie’s enduring influence, was covered by Metallica on their 1987 The $5.98 E.P. – Garage Days Re-Revisited.

Their 1972 second effort, Squawk, featured a cover image of a bird-like plane crashing to Earth drawn by frequent Yes illustrator Roger Dean. The following year they dropped Never Turn Your Back on a Friend, which featured another Dean cover illustration and one of the group’s most beloved songs, the proto speed-metal, blues-flecked rager “Breadfan,” which Metallica issued as a 1988 B-side to “Harvester of Sorrow.” Their songs have also been covered over the years by everyone from Van Halen to Iron Maiden, Soundgarden and Megadeth.

After near-annual releases throughout the 1970s — In For the Kill! (1974), Bandolier (1975), If I Were Brittania I’d Waive the Rules (1976), Impeckable (1978) — guitarist Bourge split with the group before the release of their eighth full-length, 1980’s Power Supply. Two more 1980s albums, 1981’s Nightflight and 1982’s Deliver Us From Evil, propelled the group through their final live gigs in 1987. It would be 24 years before Budgie issued their 11th and final album, 2006’s You’re Living In Cuckooland.

A 2010 Eastern European reunion tour was cut short when Shelley was hospitalized with an aortic aneurysm, effectively marking the end of the group’s career. Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich paid tribute to Shelley in an Instagram Story on Tuesday, posting a classic black and white picture of the bassist in action and writing, “Thank you Burke for everything you did for heavy music and much next level appreciation for co-writing and creating two songs that Metallica were honoured to record over the years, ‘Breadfan’ and ‘Crash Course In Brain Surgery’.”

‘Encanto’ Star Mauro Castillo Talks About Bruno and Joining a Rare Club on Hot 100

The Encanto soundtrack tops the Billboard 200 this week, propelled by songs featuring Colombian stars like Carlos Vives and Sebastian Yatra. But the most recognizable song is “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” performed by Catalina Gaitan, Adassa, Rhenzy Fekix, Dianne Guerrero, Stephani Beatriz and Mauro Castillo, former singer of venerable salsa orchestra Grupo Niche.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which surprisingly shot to No. 5 on the Hot 100, has shone a spotlight on Castillo, who plays the irresistible Felix Madrigal (Mirabel’s uncle and Pepa’s husband) in the original and in the Spanish versions of the film, and who looks very much like his character.

The 43-year-old Castillo, who was born in Cali, Colombia but now lives in Miami thanks to an extraordinary ability visa, joins a surprisingly short list of Colombian acts to have reached the Hot 100 chart — artists including Shakira, Juanes, Carlos Vives, J Balvin, Maluma and Karol G.

Reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 as part of the soundtrack is a blessing, but hitting No. 5 on the Hot 100, especially as an Afro Latino artist — which is important to you — must be special.

Mauro Castillo: I feel an immense, infinite joy for my country of Colombia. As everyone knows, Encanto is inspired in our culture and I am excited to say that “We Dont Talk About Bruno” is a song that unites Latin America thanks to the inclusion of [Cuban] elements like son montuno, cha cha cha and guajira.

Mauro Castillo

So recording “Bruno” was not a strange thing for you. If the song has  ‘son montuno,’ ‘Cha cha cha’ and ‘guajira’ it is then connected with your primary genre, salsa.

Yes. If you listen well you will notice that the drum set in the shape of a montuno is very present in “Bruno.” And the drum is part of our local music. It is a brilliant heritage in Colombia. We could say the song pays homage to that instrument and the role it has played in our culture. But “Bruno” goes further. It has a lot of R&B, Pop, and urban music. Adassa raps in the song and then this wonderful universe comes together in a Latin diversity that thrills you.

Salsa is your life …

Absolutely. During my career I have composed for Oscar D ‘Leon, Joe Arroyo and I was part of Grupo Niche. For me as an Afro Latino they have been references and I feel that it is my responsibility to bring our music in search for new horizons.

How did you get to Encanto?

We were in the middle of the pandemic, a very complex situation and I had just released my album Idilios, and thanks to the fact that I was actively working they called me for the casting, I passed the filter and then I had an interview with some of the producers, including Jared Bush.

The same director as Zootopia and Moana

Yes. And in the interview via Zoom something very funny happened. While the conference was being organized I picked up my trombone. I was anxious and began to play long notes. Then something unexpected and funny happened. One of the producers told me: “I see that we have something in common.” It was Jared. He bends down and pulls out a trombone. So we connected immediately. Jared is an excellent trombonist.

Encanto

You enchanted them! [Laughter] How did your passion for the trombone come about?

My fondness for the trombone was born when I was in school, and from my love for salsa, although I confess that I had not seen a trombone. It was to impress my friends that I said I wanted to be a trombonist. Later I discovered the instrument and fell in love with it when I studied music at Universidad del Valle [in Cali] where I also graduated as an operatic tenor.

Tell us about Felix. You are from the west coast of Colombia, from Cali, but where is Felix from? It seems that he is from the Caribbean coast of the country.

He is from the Caribbean coast. But I took the liberty of adding to the character some little things from my Pacific coast. In fact, the scene in Antonio’s room where he rides on the Jaguar called Parce, is a scene recreated from the Chocó region in the Pacific coast, where I am from. The birds, the species that are seen there are from Chocó.

How was the Hollywood premiere? Do the journalists of the planet know about Colombia?

[Laughs] Something also funny happened. In Hollywood a journalist who spoke very little Spanish was surprised because she did not know that there were Afros in Colombia. Many people know, for example, that in the Colombian soccer team most of the players are Afro, but there is another part of the world that has no idea about what our country is like. That surprised me a lot. In Colombia there are five million people that self-identify as Afro, and perhaps more. Cali, for example, is the city outside Brazil with the largest African population in Latin America.

Afro artists you admire?

The late maestro Jairo Varela, leader of Niche. I like and am inspired by James Brown, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz.

Billie Eilish Calls Out Benny Blanco for Charlie Puth TikTok Takedowns: ‘What Do You Do All Day, Benny?’

It’s hard to say what exactly is going on between Benny Blanco and Charlie Puth, but suffice it to say Billie Eilish doesn’t seem to like it. The “Bad Guy” singer weighed in with a pointed TikTok response to Blanco’s inexplicable months-long trolling of Puth over the weekend, pointedly asking the producer what makes him so special.

To backtrack a bit: For some reason Blanco, who has worked with Puth in the past, has spent the past six plus months flooding his TikTok feed with an endless run of Puth diss videos. In addition to a recent string of very NSFW clips, Blanco has dissed Charlie’s knowledge of music theory, encouraged Charlie to quit the business and made fun of the singer for sitting in “your room all day [making] TikToks.”

The latter video from early November included a clip of Puth wondering why Benny was going at him so hard, asking, “You know, man, these videos were really funny at first. I don’t exactly know why you’ve been so mean to me these past couple of months, but it does genuinely hurt my feelings. I used to look up to you and I don’t know where all this is coming from.” And it appears to have been the last straw for Eilish.

Billie responded on Friday with a clip featuring Benny’s TikTok takedown, followed by a short one in which a smirking Eilish wonders, “What do you do all day, Benny? The same thing, literally the same thing,” before pointing a finger gun at the camera. Puth responded to Billie’s backing in the video that has more than 13 million views to date with a “thank you,” but otherwise has not publicly addressed the one-way quarrel in public.

Blanco did, however, appear to suggest a possible detente in a video posted last week in which a random selection filter flips options over his head as a voiceover says, “Whatever this filter tells me to do in 2022, you guys hold me accountable for it, because I’ll do it.” The “random” options then just happen to fall on “make up with Charlie Puth,” which prompts a spit-take from Benny.

Is it all an elaborate inside joke? A set-up for a possible upcoming collaboration? At press time it was unclear, and spokespeople for Blanco and Puth have not responded to requests for comment on the apparent feud.

Check out some of the videos below.

Happy Mondays’ Bez suffers “dangerous” accident on ‘Dancing On Ice’

Happy Mondays percussionist Mark ‘Bez’ Berry has suffered a “dangerous” accident on Dancing On Ice, according to Phillip Schofield.

READ MORE: Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! – Happy Mondays’ Bez

Schofield, who hosts the show as it returns to ITV this week, reportedly told The Sun that an accident saw Bez’s helmet “fly off” after he hit the ice.

“You have a rink that is full of essentially blades and we know how dangerous they can be and how deeply they can cut and how sharp they are,” he explained.

“I’ve just watched a video of Bez on his second day fall over backwards so hard that his helmet flew off. Dancing On Ice is really dangerous.”

Discussing the risks this year’s contestants have been taking, Schofield continued: “We’ve seen in the past that people do get hurt and, of course, you want to avoid that at all cost. I think we will be wrapping Bez up in bubble wrap that’s for sure.”

Anticipating his appearance on Dancing On Ice last year, Bez said: “At the moment it’s more like Bambi On Ice, not Dancing On Ice.

“How I got picked I don’t know because I was absolutely awful at the audition but they must have seen some potential in me!”

He continued: “I’m looking forward to learning a new skill and I can’t wait for the Christmas ice rinks again and I can get on there and really show off.”

This year’s series of Dancing On Ice launches on January 16 at 6.30pm GMT.

Stella McCartney Armors The adidas UltraBOOST 22 With An Inflated Exoskeleton

Exemplified by her newest take on the UltraBOOST 22, Stella McCartney‘s adidas line is taking on a distinct form this year. And while said model may use the same sole as the original, its upper is nowhere close to familiar.

This is due wholly in part to the exterior cage, which wraps and supports the entirety of the profile. The singular piece, whose inflated parts are meticulously scattered throughout the available space, mirrors the bladder of the iconic Instapump Fury, only sans the manual pump. Underneath, the base itself is also distinct, opting for a knit bootie that extends just passed mid-top height. Laces, too, help fasten the midfoot, though they’re seemingly integrated into the adjacent systems.

For a closer look, check out the official images below. According to adidas AU, these are set to release on January 14th. A US release shouldn’t be too far off.

adidas Originals Joins “Neo-Vintage” Trend By Giving The Forum ’84 High A “Worn” Look

There’s no denying that figures the likes of Bad Bunny and Beyoncé have helped the adidas Forum garner attention over the last two years, but the made-for-basketball silhouette has been a favorite of savvy sneaker collectors since the 1980s. For its latest ensemble, the hoops-staple-turned-street-style-icon has emerged in a “worn” arrangement that nods to its past.

Akin to dozens of custom adidas Originals silhouettes that’ve graced Instagram feeds everywhere over the past 24 months, the newly-surfaced Forum ’84 High indulges in a manufactured “beat” look that taps into the “Neo-Vintage” trend that’s dominated some sneaker-related conversations since the tail-end of 2019. The Three Stripes’ classic silhouette opts for the same color-blocking with which it debuted more than 35 years ago, though the mix of white and yellow that takes over the pair’s upper is accompanied by “wear and tear” marks. Paint “fading” and “scuffs” across the sneakers unquestionably promote the “Neo-Vintage” design approach, but they’re arguably overshadowed by the yellow midsole and its “dusty” outsole kin. Together, each aforementioned component help connect the present to the past in a much more accurate and compelling way than usual, and more pairs featuring the design are likely to follow.

No official adidas.com release date has been disclosed by the brand, but that’s likely to change soon. In the meantime, enjoy product shots of the pair ahead.

Elsewhere under the adidas banner, all-black Yeezy Slides are expected to arrive before 2022 ends.
