Although the Swoosh hasn’t unveiled all of its plan’s for the Nike Air Force 1‘s 40th anniversary, it’s difficult to imagine that another high-profile collaboration prepped for the celebration will deliver as experimental a look as Off-White‘s makeover of the sneaker’s mid-top trim.

On June 23rd, Nike will unveil yet another posthumous release from Virgil Abloh, expanding the legacies of both Bruce Kilgore’s footwear design from 1982 and the Illinois-native. Akin to the accompanying “Black” pair, the upcoming drop delivers a notable overhaul of the Air Force 1 Mid, which debuted in 1994. Airy mesh replaces traditional leather across the upper, and dons a woodgrain pattern that further updates Kilgore’s creation. Non-traditional lacing systems and layouts fall in line with other offerings from the Off-White camp, working in-tandem with the orange zip-tie on the lateral profile to catapult the sneaker into the fashion stratosphere. Transparent logos at the sides further allow the aforementioned mesh to pop that much more, though the grey nylon ankle strap and nearby heel panels battle for the spotlight. Sole units underfoot, however, propose the Air Force 1‘s arguably biggest update to the 40 years as midsoles are deformed, Air bubbles are exposed and oft-imitated traction is modified with protruding spikes borrowed from Nike’s performance running line.

Enjoy product shots of the pair ahead, courtesy of BSTN, and find the shoes at Nike SNKRS and select stockists on Thursday, June 23rd, for $185 USD.
