Nike Adds Plaid Collars To The Air Max Goadome SE

Nike has long-fostered the concept of a sneaker boot, often expanding their selection whenever the weather begins to cool. This year is certainly no exception, the brand quick to bring out the Air Max Goadome SE in a new, plaid-accented colorway.

The lumberjack feel only amplifies thanks to the “Shadow Brown” exterior, the shade integral in likening the silhouette more to a boot than a sneaker. Branding, then, is largely camouflaged amongst the earth tone, debossed very small into the side profile. The buffalo plaid at the collar is much more apparent by comparison, it’s brief display of color used across the lateral and medial padding. Finally, black rounds out the palette underfoot, mimicking that of Vibram soles and the like.

If you’d like to get your hands on a pair of these, they’re available now in limited sizes. Find them at Nike.com for a retail of $180 USD.

Boots not your thing? Maybe you’ll enjoy the Light Bone Air Jordan 1 GORE-TEX.

Prince Could Posthumously Receive Congressional Gold Medal

Minnesota’s Congressional delegation on Monday (Oct. 25) is introducing a resolution to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to pop superstar Prince, citing his “indelible mark on Minnesota and American culture,” The Associated Press has learned.

The medal is one of the nation’s highest civilian honors and past recipients include George Washington, the Wright Brothers, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, the Navajo Code Talkers, the Tuskegee Airmen and the Dalai Lama.

“The world is a whole lot cooler because Prince was in it — he touched our hearts, opened our minds, and made us want to dance. With this legislation, we honor his memory and contributions as a composer, performer, and music innovator. Purple reigns in Minnesota today and every day because of him,” said Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who represents the state, in a statement.

Prince, whose hits include “Little Red Corvette,” ″Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry,” died April 21, 2016, of an accidental fentanyl overdose at age 57 at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

The resolution for Prince is led by Klobuchar and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat who represents Minneapolis in the House. The full Minnesota delegation serves as original cosponsors, including Sen. Tina Smith and Reps. Jim Hagedorn, Angie Craig, Dean Phillips, Betty McCollum, Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, Pete Stauber and Omar.

“Prince is a Minnesota icon,” said Omar in a statement. “He showed that it was OK to be a short, Black kid from Minneapolis and still change the world. He not only changed the arc of music history; he put Minneapolis on the map.”

The legislation notes that Prince is “widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation,” with seven Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, an Oscar for the score to “Purple Rain” and a Golden Globe.

It adds that he is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, sold more than 150 million records worldwide and that “Purple Rain” was added by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. The bill also puts into the Congressional record the glyph he used instead of his name for a time that Prince called “The Love Symbol.”

Under the rules, Congressional Gold Medals require the support of at least two-thirds of the members of both the Senate and House of Representatives before they can be signed into law by the president. The Prince legislation will be introduced in the House and Senate.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, the singer, songwriter, arranger and instrumentalist broke through in the late 1970s with the hits “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” and soared over the following decade with such albums as “1999” and “Purple Rain.” Among his other notable releases: “Sign O’ the Times,” “Graffiti Bridge” and “The Black Album.”

If the gold medal is approved and made, the bill asks that it be given to the Smithsonian Institution, which should make it available for display at the National Museum of African American History and Culture or on loan.

10 Cool New Pop Songs to Get You Through the Week: Aly & AJ, Craig David & MNEK and More

Another week is upon us, which means it’s time to press play on 10 Cool Pop Songs to Get You Through the Week. If you’re looking from some inspiration and sonic fuel, we’ve rounded up songs from Aly & AJ, Duran Duran ft. Tove Lo, Hippo Campus, Dreamer Boy ft. BENEE and Craig David & MNEK and others to help get you through another week.

Slide any of these gems into your personal playlist to get energized to take on the week – or scroll to the end of the post for a custom playlist of all 10.

Wet with Blood Orange, “Bound”

Wet is back (and independent!) with the emotive pop that thrust them into the spotlight back in 2016, this time, with their most recent offering, Letter Blue. The album shines and envelopes the listener in a dreamy, synth-filled cocoon of sounds before hitting a sweet spot halfway through with “Bound.” Blood Orange blends seamlessly in both production and vocals — a nod to the collaborators’ total harmony on the track. – Starr Bowenbank

Hippo Campus, “Boys”

Hippo Campus isn’t new to having pointed lyrics in their songs, and “Boys” is proof — the new track sees lead singer Jake Luppen cutting into the messiness of one’s twenties with expert precision, starting off like a movie before gradually descending into a happy-go-lucky chaos by the bridge. – S. Bowenbank

Mild Orange, “The Time of Our Lives”

Mild Orange has mastered the art of making music for the nostalgic, as evidenced on “The Time of Our Lives.” The indie quartet reflects on a trip to Japan through rose-colored glasses, an understandable choice given the pandemic. Hints of shoegaze come together with the group’s self-described “melting melodies” for a concoction that’s satisfying enough to get swept up in. – S. Bowenbank

Alice Ivy and Sycco, “Weakness”

For this perfect summer closer, 28-year-old Australian musician/producer Alice Ivy teams up with fellow Aussie Sycco, a rising singer-songwriter who was up for the Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year award in 2020. Ivy delivers a welcome dose of reverb while Sycco plays with repeated phrases, working together to ensure this one gets stuck deep in listeners’ heads. – Lyndsey Havens

Aly & AJ, “Am I Alright”

As pop-rock duo Aly & AJ gear up to release the deluxe version of their stellar summer album a touch of the beat gets you up on your feet and then out and then into the sun, they continue to release even more inventive and edgy tracks with the latest being “Am I Alright.” The plinking riff and steadying drumbeat add vibrant color to the oftentimes dark question, “am I alright?” – L. Havens

Duran Duran ft. Tove Love, “Give It All Up”

Duran Duran delve into dark, moody atmospherics on “Give It All Up,” a highlight from their new LP Future Past. Even after four decades, the English hitmakers still have an ineffable alchemy together, and adding Swedish dark-pop chanteuse Tove Lo to the mix is a smart move that takes “Give” to the next level of melancholy pop bliss. – Joe Lynch

Ariana and the Rose ft. Cakes da Killa, “London Boys”

Synth-pop purveyor Ariana and the Rose and electro-infused rapper Cakes da Killa – neither one a stranger to the dancefloor – team up on “London Boys,” a thumping four-on-the-floor house banger about beautiful Brits that boasts an absolutely fire verse from Cakes. – J. Lynch

Craig David & MNEK, “Who You Are”

A gentle harp arrangement introduces this inspired pairing, as MNEK and Craig David find a meeting point between separate generations of radio-ready R&B. “Who You Are” is both understated and exciting, two pros delivering romantic deference and sidestepping unnecessary vocal theatrics. – Jason Lipshutz

Hope Tala, “Tiptoeing”

Hope Tala’s rhythmic pop often flows so naturally that it’s not hard to overlook the intricacies of her songwriting. New single “Tiptoeing,” which was created with Greg Kurstin, presents itself as both easily developed and fussily mastered, with Tala’s tone offering comfort but the production and lyrics striving for a complex equilibrium. – J. Lipshutz

Dreamer Boy feat. BENEE, “Are You Letting Go?”

Ready for the “Circles” of this fall? “Are You Letting Go?,” the new team-up between Dreamer Boy and BENEE, nails the balance between pop and alt-rock crooning that Post Malone rode to ubiquity two years ago, as BENEE interacts with electric guitar riffs and channels the same type of charm that helped “Supalonely” become her breakthrough. – J. Lipshutz

“‘My Way’ is a song about accepting and embracing the trials and tribulations of the past, present, and future,” vocalist Lynn Gunn said of the track. “It’s about facing the pain, loss, hard times, and hard decisions while finding empowerment and humility (and a sprinkle of humour) through it all.”

She continued: “Life always pushes us toward great change and growth. When we stop fighting it and flow with it, we offer ourselves, and others, so much more. Whatever way it takes us, our paths are all so uniquely our own. You have your way and I have my way.”

The single follows on from the release of ‘Monster’ in August, which marked the start of a “new era” for the band, and ‘Burn It All Down’, the official anthem for the 2021 League of Legends World Championship.

PVRIS released their third album ‘Use Me’ in 2020.

Speaking about it to NME, Gunn said: “[Those songs] capture the chaos of the last two years. There’s so much that I’ll never be able to share. You’ve got to keep changing and growing. If someone or something is attacking you negatively, sometimes you’ve just got to have the power and the courage to walk away from it.”

Nike Dunk High “Pink Prime” Official Images

As it inches closer to its 37th anniversary, the Nike Dunk High continues to appear in compelling colorways. The latest?: A two-tone arrangement featuring vibrant “Pink Prime” flair.

Akin to some of the model’s most iconic styles, the newly-surfaced pair indulges in a “colorless” smooth leather base that allows for the tone that takes over the superimposed panels to revel in the spotlight. A near-fluorescent rose shade animates the overlays around the toe, along the tongue and across the heel, as well as the laces and branding on the tongue. Underfoot, the Air Jordan 1-like sole unit opts for a “White” midsole, whereas the tried-and-proven tread reverts to a “Pink Prime” makeup.

No official Nike SNKRS release date has been confirmed, but that’s likely to change soon. While you wait, enjoy images of the pair ahead.

The Brain Dead x ASICS Trabuco Max Is A Frightening Nightmare Turned Trail Shoe

Following a partnership with Kiko Kostadinov, both Brain Dead and ASICS quickly branched off, teaming up with one another to rethink the Trabuco Max. And what they’ve come up with is an inspired display of Halloween horror, an arrangement that’s appropriately dubbed “Chaos Slime.”

At a glance, the pair is no more imposing than its GR counterparts. However, once closer, you’ll notice a pattern chiseled into the upper. This, like the warped, vein-akin laces adjacent, seem influenced by the mutated creature that faces the campaign. Underfoot, the bright green of the tread only aids this connection, while simultaneously complementing the aforementioned strings and Brain Dead insignia.

When the shoes first released earlier in the month, Brain Dead hosted a very special, thematically similar haunted house in celebration. And only after participants braved the mold-contaminated, mutant-filled maze, an opportunity to purchase the collaboration presented itself. Fortunately for the scare-averse, there’ll be no need to jump such hoops for the global launch, which is due to hit retailers on October 30th.

In other news, the Foam Runner Vermillion is also releasing this week.

Giselle of aespa Apologizes for Lip-Syncing Racial Slur

Giselle of the K-pop girl group aespa has issued an apology via Twitter for mouthing a racial slur in a YouTube video featuring the group.

On Saturday, the group’s agency, SM Entertainment, dropped a behind-the-scenes video of the girls shooting for their recent Savage EP, which debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Album Sales chart. The video included a now-viral clip of Giselle, also known as Aeri Uchinaga, mouthing a racial slur as a part of a lyric from SZA’s “Love Galore.”

Giselle’s apology came from aespa’s official Twitter account and was sent to the group’s audience of 1.6 million Twitter followers, citing that she got “carried away” when the song started playing.

Hello, this is GISELLE.

I would like to apologize for mouthing the wrongful word from the lyrics of the song that was playing on-site. I had no intentions of doing it with any purpose and got carried away when one of my favorite artist’s song was played. I sincerely apologize.

— aespa (@aespa_official) October 25, 2021

Giselle followed the apology with another tweet saying, “I will continue to learn and be more conscious of my actions.” The reactions to the apologies seem to be split between forgiveness and eyebrow-raising among fans and spectators alike.

The original video, which was first uploaded to aespa’s official YouTube channel, has since been removed and the Twitter account has not seen any activity since the release of the apology.

aespa made their U.S. television debut on Oct. 15, performing “Savage” on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “Savage” is the title track from aespa’s most recent EP, released Oct. 5 via SM Entertainment.

Lil’ Kim Talks ‘American Gangster: Trap Queens’ & Having ‘Great Friend’ Nick Cannon Become Her Manager

Lil’ Kim is serving as the narrator of BET+’s hit true crime series American Gangster: Trap Queens for the second consecutive season, helping to chronicle the crime-ridden lives of female lawbreakers. Fans can watch the new season on BET+ to learn more about infamous figures like  Tonesa Welch, Peggy Fulford, Claudette Hubbard, Priscilla Echi and former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh; the latter’s criminal activity included laundering millions of dollars, narcotics distribution and trafficking, tax evasion and property theft.

“I’m excited and honored to be doing all the seasons,” Lil’ Kim tells Billboard. “I’m a faithful watcher of American Gangster: Trap Queens.” And in her own words, to be a trap queen means to be “making money and successful.”

The hip-hop trailblazer also explains the importance of allowing the trap queens to share their stories. “It’s our time [as women],” Lil’ Kim says with a smile. “I’m from the hood, and I think people are surprised to find that there are so many women who are just like me.”

For Lil’ Kim, the story of Welch – who is often called the First Lady of the Black Mafia Family (BMF) – is particularly memorable. “[Her story] sticks out in my mind because she was down with the whole BMF movement,” she explains. “The life she was into is the life I was in before I even got into the [music] industry, so I understood her right away, and that was an instant bonding connection for me.”

Kim says she also connects with Welch because of the drug dealer’s roots in the notorious BMF – a drug trafficking and money laundering organization led by convicted Detroit brothers Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory. “We [artists] hung out with [BMF] and identify with them so well,” she says. “I was really good friends with Big Meech. He’s really a nice person and they did a lot of charity for the people. They were very much into [helping] the kids in the hood and always donating. In the industry, you have to be so many faces, and there’s different sides to everybody.”

Much like some of the women featured in the series, Kim was forced to power through a difficult childhood and many physically and mentally abusive relationships in her adult life. “I feel like all of these women have a piece of me, and I have a piece of them,” she says. “It’s just so relatable for me.”

In addition to narrating American Gangster: Trap Queens, Lil’ Kim stars in the upcoming film Miracle Across 125th Street – a move made possible thanks in part to her new manager, Nick Cannon. “Nick and I have been friends for almost 20 years, since we were like teenagers and every time I’ve asked him for anything, he’s been there,” she says. “And he asked me to do the movie soundtrack. It’s like the Friday [version] of a Christmas movie.”

As for sparking a professional relationship with her longtime friend Cannon, which was revealed last week, Kim says, “He is one of the best human beings that I’ve ever met in this world. He is a loving sweetheart, great friend and businessman, [a] business-minded individual.”

JD Pantoja & Kimberly Loaiza Named Favorite Latin Couple of 2021 (So Far) in Fan Poll

Billboard readers have crowned Juan de Dios “JD” Pantoja and Kimberly Loaiza as their favorite Latin couple of 2021 (so far).

In a fan poll published earlier this month, Billboard highlighted 11 couples in the Latin industry. Pantoja and Loaiza, who are two Mexican influencers-turned-musicians who have collaborated multiple times, took the crown with nearly 63 percent of the votes.

The beloved couple, who’s also married with two children, is followed by Christian Nodal and Belinda with more than 31 percent of the votes. Other top lovebirds included Bad Bunny and longtime novia Gabriela Berlingeri, and Rauw Alejandro and Rosalia, who made their relationship Instagram official on Rosalia’s birthday on Sept. 25.

“I’ve got my fans used to knowing everything about my life,” Pantoja previously told Billboard about having a public relationship with Kim. “I share every achievement, every problem with them on social media. My fans and I are very connected. I chronicle these moments with those who have been there since the beginning since I began dating Kim. It’s nice to be able to share it with them.”

While Headline Tours Struggle, Festivals Fuel the Concert Biz Comeback

BottleRock has made playing until the plug gets pulled a rite of passage at their annual Napa, Calif., festival, where the event’s 10 pm curfew is enforced with a kill switch. The sudden loss of amplified sound can be jarring, but when the crowd chimes in to close out song, like they did during this year’s Guns N’ Roses set, bellowing together “Oh, won’t you please take me ho-ome,” the inevitable viral video is marketing gold for the following year’s ticket sales.

This year, the high-energy close may have served as a confidence booster for the hard rock band, which recently made its post-pandemic return to the road to play 25 shows postponed from its 2020 tour, as well as 14 new ones in nearby markets. The act’s last big series of concerts was the Not in this Lifetime tour, which made $500 million starting in spring 2016 and became the fourth-highest-grossing in history, according to Billboard Boxscore. Since the concert business started again, however, it is having a hard time getting fans to show up. On average, 10% of fans who bought tickets to see Guns N’ Roses in 2019 and 2020 are coming to its shows, and performances planned for later this year in Mexico and Europe have been pushed back to 2022, amid worries about weak walkup sales.

At least Guns N’ Roses is in good company. This fall, the Eagles, Billy Joel, George Strait, Zac Brown and James Taylor have seen no-show rates as high as 25% for some concerts. Industry executives blame persistent fears about the spread of COVID-19 in indoor venues, even among those who are vaccinated, as well as competition with a flood of other concerts, festivals and destination events. Even for shows that sold out already, that means fewer bodies in seats, as well as waker food, beverage and merchandise sales – plus a blow to the ability to bookers and promoters to plan ahead.

Festivals like BottleRock, which sold out “in a matter of minutes” this year company officials say, are a bright spot in the post-pandemic music business, with the majority of such events increasing their attendance over 2019 levels, according to Live Nation’s most recent earnings report. One reason: Outdoor festivals are perceived to be safer than indoor shows. They also provide much better value.

“Fans can see so many more acts at a festival for the same price they would pay to attend a big headline tour,” says Bobby Dee, who’s producing the Once Upon a Time in LA festival in December, which features Snoop Dogg, The Game and Al Green and sold out in less than 24 hours. “They are coming out the pandemic and making the decision that they don’t want to spend two hours watching one artist play their set and encore. They want the freedom to roam the event and curate their own experience.”

With this in mind, artists are rethinking their touring plans for next year and beyond. In most cases, traditional headline concerts pay artists a guaranteed minimum, after which ticket revenue is split with the promoter, which means both sides share risk. Festivals instead offer acts a flat payment, regardless of subsequent ticket sales. That’s appealing to booking agents, who are worried about exposing their clients to risks as the concert business re-opens. It also gives some festivals the chance to book once-in-a-lifetime headliners like Stevie Nicks, who was booked to perform at BottleRock.

It can also mean paying huge fees to book headline talent that might not bring in the kind of ticket sales organizers hoped for.

In the case of BottleRock, weeks before the event, Nicks announced she couldn’t perform because of “rising COVID cases,” which left organizers to find a replacement big enough to placate customers and hopefully prevent refund requests that would put the festival in financial jeopardy. They secured Chris Stapleton, but he too pulled out the night before he was supposed to take the stage, blaming an unspecified illness. Brandi Carlile, who was already on the lineup, ended up filing in by flying in members of The Highwomen and singer Yola for a special set of their songs and covers. After all that, organizers say refund requests were minimal, speaking to the importance of the festival experience beyond headlining acts. But it shows how festivals may now need multiple backup plans.

“If festivals continue to dominate in 2021, the major management companies might need to think about creating an on-call network of alternate acts that can step in at the last minute to high profile slots if something goes wrong,” said one agency source at the event. “We’ve got to prepare for a music business that’s going to require more flexibility and contingencies.”
