DMX’s Ex-Wife & Eldest Sons Named Estate Administrators After Alleged 15th Child Emerges

Months after DMX died at age 50, his ex-wife and three eldest sons will temporarily manage his estate.

The late Grammy-nominated hitmaker died April 9, one week after he was admitted to White Plains Hospital in New York when he suffered a heart attack. According to a statement issued Monday (Oct. 25), “DMX’s ex wife, Tashera Simmons [and his] oldest sons Xavier Simmons, Sean Simmons and Tacoma Simmons have been appointed temporary co-administrators of the estate of Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons pursuant to a decision of the Westchester county Surrogate’s Court today.

“They will now exclusively manage the affairs of their late father’s estate,” the statement continues.

Estate attorney Herb Nass will protect Earl “DMX” Simmons’ estate and assist the rapper’s co-administrator sons. Meanwhile, entertainment attorney Ron Sweeney of Ron Sweeney and Company will be responsible for all industry-related matters pertaining to DMX.

The statement comes after a woman claimed this weekend to be DMX’s 15th child and asked to be included in his estate. Nass said that all 15 people claiming to be DMX’s children will be asked to submit to DNA testing in the coming weeks to prove paternity.

At the time of DMX’s death, his family issued a statement, saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever.”

Born Dec. 18, 1970, in Baltimore, Maryland, DMX released 15 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including “Party Up (Up in Here),” which peaked at No. 27 and charted for 21 weeks. His collaborative tune “Money, Power, Respect” with The LOX and Lil’ Kim peaked at No. 17 and charted for 20 weeks. DMX has also appeared in several films, including Belly, Fast and Fierce: Death Race and Romeo Must Die — the latter alongside Jet Li and fellow hitmaker Aaliyah (who died in 2001 at age 22). DMX has also guest starred on TV shows, including Moesha, Half and Half, Fresh Off the Boat and Eve.

Hailey Bieber Extends Condolences to Halyna Hutchins’ Family After ‘Rust’ Shooting

Hailey Bieber is sharing her condolences in light of the tragic accident on the set of Alec Baldwin’s upcoming movie, Rust, which saw cinematographer Halyna Hutchins fatally shot and director Joel Souza injured after the actor misfired a prop gun on set. Bieber is Baldwin’s niece, the daughter of Alec’s brother Stephen.

Over the weekend, the model and wife of Justin Bieber wrote a message to Hutchins’ family via her Instagram Story.

“Sending all my love to the family of Halyna Hutchins,” the 24-year-old wrote. “This is a truly unimaginable and devastating tragedy. My thoughts are also with Joel Souza as he recovers. I am absolutely heartbroken for everyone involved.”

Following the incident — which took place Thursday on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico — Baldwin explained that he was working with police in Santa Fe to piece together the events that led up to the accident and told his followers that he was left stunned by the incident.

“There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,” he tweeted Friday. “I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”

Souza, the director for Rust, was injured during the gun misfire but was released from the hospital the next day. The investigation of the incident is continuing. Production for Rust is on hiatus until further notice.

Nike Adds Plaid Collars To The Air Max Goadome SE

Nike has long-fostered the concept of a sneaker boot, often expanding their selection whenever the weather begins to cool. This year is certainly no exception, the brand quick to bring out the Air Max Goadome SE in a new, plaid-accented colorway.

The lumberjack feel only amplifies thanks to the “Shadow Brown” exterior, the shade integral in likening the silhouette more to a boot than a sneaker. Branding, then, is largely camouflaged amongst the earth tone, debossed very small into the side profile. The buffalo plaid at the collar is much more apparent by comparison, it’s brief display of color used across the lateral and medial padding. Finally, black rounds out the palette underfoot, mimicking that of Vibram soles and the like.

If you’d like to get your hands on a pair of these, they’re available now in limited sizes. Find them at Nike.com for a retail of $180 USD.

Boots not your thing? Maybe you’ll enjoy the Light Bone Air Jordan 1 GORE-TEX.

Celebrating Toad’s Place, the New Haven Club Where Dylan, Springsteen & The Stones Came to Play

For nearly five decades, the music club Toad’s Place in New Haven, Conn. has earned an outsized national reputation that has drawn superstars including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel — and most memorably the Rolling Stones — to its 750-capacity room.

Now the club’s history has been captured in the new book The Legendary Toad’s Place: Stories from New Haven’s Famed Music Venue (Globe Pequot), co-written by the club’s owner, Brian Phelps, and veteran journalist Randall Beach. The authors hosted a book party at Toad’s on Oct. 20. (Editor’s note: This writer contributed a short essay to the book.)

“It has been my job to present the music as best as I could,” said Phelps, seated next to Beach onstage at the club.

And what music. It’s fair to say that almost any national or regional club-level artist touring the Northeast from the late 1970s onward has been welcomed at Toad’s Place, located on a side street in New Haven, surrounded by the campus of Yale University.

While the walls of Toad’s Place may not talk, they are emblazoned with the names of acts that played the club early in their careers. Among many others: U2, R.E.M., Meat Loaf, Michael Bolton (a native of New Haven), Ramones, Talking Heads, Pat Benatar, Joe Jackson and Huey Lewis & the News, whose lead singer told the book’s authors: “We love that joint.”

Phelps says Toad’s Place had survived through the decades thanks to the club’s willingness to evolve with tastes in music and the desires of fans. Paintings on the walls commemorate appearances by Kanye West in 2004, Drake in 2009, Iggy Azalea in 2013 and three bookings of Cardi B in 2016 and 2017.

Originally opened in January 1975 by the late Mike Spoerndle and two partners, and originally conceived as a French restaurant, Toad’s Place began booking national club acts in 1976 with the help of well-connected musician and agent Peter Menta and, from 1977 onward, with help from promoter Jimmy Koplik, who is now Live Nation’s regional president of Connecticut and upstate New York.

On Aug. 25, 1978, Koplik had booked Springsteen to play the since-demolished New Haven Coliseum area. After the show, Springsteen stopped by Toad’s Place to jam with John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. The club’s reputation was growing, thanks to the savvy of in-house bookers Lucy Sabini and her successor, Katherine Blossom.

By the summer of 1980, in the wake of the multiplatinum success of The Stranger, Billy Joel had become an arena-packing superstar when he chose to play two nights at Toad’s Place to record tracks for his Songs From The Attic album.

But the most remarkable night at Toad’s Place took place at the end of that decade, in August 1989. Beach recalled for the crowd the night that he heard a message on his home answering machine tipping him off to a hot booking at the club. Others had been told the event was a birthday party for Koplik. A local band, Sons of Bob, were on the bill that night.

On Aug. 12, 1989, The Rolling Stones took the stage at Toad’s Place in front of just 600-something dazed fans at Toad’s Place. The band, which had been rehearsing for their Steel Wheels tour in Washington, Conn., played an 11-song set that opened with “Start Me Up,” closed with “Jumping Jack Flash,” and featured the first live performance of “Mixed Emotions.”

Less than a year later, Dylan, also warming up for a concert tour, gave a marathon performance at Toad’s Place on Jan. 12, 1990, playing for four hours and 20 minutes in multiple sets, granting the request of an audience member to cover Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” and concluding with “Like a Rolling Stone” at 2:20 a.m.

In the book, Beach quotes Billboard touring editor Dave Brooks, who cites a handful of clubs nationwide that have survived as long as Toad’s Place, like the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, N.J.; First Avenue in Minneapolis; the Troubadour in West Hollywood; and the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass.

“I think the main thing that has kept them open all these years is staff or current ownership who feel a sense of guardianship and strive to protect these venues because of their cultural and historical impact on popular music,” said Brooks.

Phelps managed Toad’s Place from 1976 to 1985, then became a partner with Spoerndle and subsequently took over ownership of the club. But at the book party, Phelps praised the role of his former mentor and partner in launching Toad’s Place. “Big Mike” Spoerndle earned his nickname with his size, his appetites, his lifestyle, his charisma and his generosity; he became “the soul of Toad’s,” Koplik told the book’s authors.

But Spoerndle also struggled for years with substance abuse. For those familiar with the onstage history of Toad’s Place, the book’s deeply reported chapter on Spoerndle, his upbringing and the roots of his addictions is the emotional heart of the Toad’s Place story. On May 6, 2011, Spoerndle, then 59, was found dead at his home and the cause of death was later given as poly-substance abuse and kidney failure.

When the pandemic struck, Toad’s Place was forced to close for months, “shut up like a damn morgue,” a Yale student said at the time. Phelps turned to savings, the federal Paycheck Protection Program and, at the time of the book’s completion, was awaiting additional help from the Shuttered Venues Operators Grant, which Congress passed in December 2020.

Toad’s Place has reopened and continues to book artists bound for greater glory. (Two nights after the book party, the club hosted hotly tipped singer/songwriter Maggie Lindemann.) As he sat beside Beach, Phelps told the crowd he was looking ahead to celebrating the 50th anniversary of Toad’s Place in 2025.

Reflecting in the book on the pandemic and its aftermath, Phelps writes: “We will survive. We have a destiny in front of us!”

Brandi Carlile Announces 2022 Tour With Ani DiFranco, Brittany Howard, Allison Russell, Lucius & More

On Saturday, Brandi Carlile made her Saturday Night Live debut, performing two songs from her new album In These Silent Days, including “Right on Time” and “Broken Horses.” Next year, Carlile will hit the road in support of the project, which debuted atop Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart, Top Rock Albums chart and Tastemaster Albums chart.

The six-time Grammy winner’s Beyond These Silent Days Tour will launch June 11 at Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. The Live Nation-produced trek will also include two shows at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater on July 8-9. Other stops include Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Boston’s TD Garden and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

To open shows on the tour, Carlile will welcome several artists including Ani DiFranco, Brittany Howard, Celisse, Indigo Girls, Lake Street Dive, Lucius, Sarah McLachlan and Allison Russell.

“I know what I want it to look like. I want it to feel like I’m getting to pick up where I left off,” Carlile recently told Billboard of the upcoming tour. “We went and did some things this summer and they were so special. They’re special in their own way. I’ll probably actually never forget because we were right on a razor’s edge, emotionally.”

Though artists have begun making their way back to touring over the past few months, many of those shows have come with unpredictability and added concerns. Carlile’s recent shows have been no exception, with the singer/songwriter and her team facing obstacles due to extreme weather and COVID concerns.

“It seemed like every show was within 24 hours from getting canceled multiple times, and then a bunch did get canceled,” she said. “We had two hurricanes, we had wildfire smoke cancel shows. We had heat domes, temperatures above a hundred that are dangerous for everyone. Then we had COVID scares and compliance issues. But it made the shows into huge emotional releases, just because it felt like every single one of them was hard one. Having said that, I’m pretty glad to put that gauntlet behind me and go out on the road with a heart full of joy, and feel confident and at peace.”

Artist pre-sale will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. local time, with the general on-sale opening Friday at 10 a.m. local time. In addition to these newly added tour dates, Carlile is already set for a sold-out show at New York’s Carnegie Hall on Nov. 6, 2021, as well as the four-night Girls Just Wanna Weekend at Riviera Maya, Mexico, in February. Carlile will perform as part of Moon Crush 2022 in Miramar Beach, Fla. (set for April 21-24), and at Stagecoach in Indio, Calif., on April 29.

Prince Could Posthumously Receive Congressional Gold Medal

Minnesota’s Congressional delegation on Monday (Oct. 25) is introducing a resolution to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to pop superstar Prince, citing his “indelible mark on Minnesota and American culture,” The Associated Press has learned.

The medal is one of the nation’s highest civilian honors and past recipients include George Washington, the Wright Brothers, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, the Navajo Code Talkers, the Tuskegee Airmen and the Dalai Lama.

“The world is a whole lot cooler because Prince was in it — he touched our hearts, opened our minds, and made us want to dance. With this legislation, we honor his memory and contributions as a composer, performer, and music innovator. Purple reigns in Minnesota today and every day because of him,” said Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who represents the state, in a statement.

Prince, whose hits include “Little Red Corvette,” ″Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry,” died April 21, 2016, of an accidental fentanyl overdose at age 57 at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

The resolution for Prince is led by Klobuchar and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat who represents Minneapolis in the House. The full Minnesota delegation serves as original cosponsors, including Sen. Tina Smith and Reps. Jim Hagedorn, Angie Craig, Dean Phillips, Betty McCollum, Tom Emmer, Michelle Fischbach, Pete Stauber and Omar.

“Prince is a Minnesota icon,” said Omar in a statement. “He showed that it was OK to be a short, Black kid from Minneapolis and still change the world. He not only changed the arc of music history; he put Minneapolis on the map.”

The legislation notes that Prince is “widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation,” with seven Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, an Oscar for the score to “Purple Rain” and a Golden Globe.

It adds that he is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, sold more than 150 million records worldwide and that “Purple Rain” was added by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. The bill also puts into the Congressional record the glyph he used instead of his name for a time that Prince called “The Love Symbol.”

Under the rules, Congressional Gold Medals require the support of at least two-thirds of the members of both the Senate and House of Representatives before they can be signed into law by the president. The Prince legislation will be introduced in the House and Senate.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, the singer, songwriter, arranger and instrumentalist broke through in the late 1970s with the hits “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” and soared over the following decade with such albums as “1999” and “Purple Rain.” Among his other notable releases: “Sign O’ the Times,” “Graffiti Bridge” and “The Black Album.”

If the gold medal is approved and made, the bill asks that it be given to the Smithsonian Institution, which should make it available for display at the National Museum of African American History and Culture or on loan.

10 Cool New Pop Songs to Get You Through the Week: Aly & AJ, Craig David & MNEK and More

Another week is upon us, which means it’s time to press play on 10 Cool Pop Songs to Get You Through the Week. If you’re looking from some inspiration and sonic fuel, we’ve rounded up songs from Aly & AJ, Duran Duran ft. Tove Lo, Hippo Campus, Dreamer Boy ft. BENEE and Craig David & MNEK and others to help get you through another week.

Slide any of these gems into your personal playlist to get energized to take on the week – or scroll to the end of the post for a custom playlist of all 10.

Wet with Blood Orange, “Bound”

Wet is back (and independent!) with the emotive pop that thrust them into the spotlight back in 2016, this time, with their most recent offering, Letter Blue. The album shines and envelopes the listener in a dreamy, synth-filled cocoon of sounds before hitting a sweet spot halfway through with “Bound.” Blood Orange blends seamlessly in both production and vocals — a nod to the collaborators’ total harmony on the track. – Starr Bowenbank

Hippo Campus, “Boys”

Hippo Campus isn’t new to having pointed lyrics in their songs, and “Boys” is proof — the new track sees lead singer Jake Luppen cutting into the messiness of one’s twenties with expert precision, starting off like a movie before gradually descending into a happy-go-lucky chaos by the bridge. – S. Bowenbank

Mild Orange, “The Time of Our Lives”

Mild Orange has mastered the art of making music for the nostalgic, as evidenced on “The Time of Our Lives.” The indie quartet reflects on a trip to Japan through rose-colored glasses, an understandable choice given the pandemic. Hints of shoegaze come together with the group’s self-described “melting melodies” for a concoction that’s satisfying enough to get swept up in. – S. Bowenbank

Alice Ivy and Sycco, “Weakness”

For this perfect summer closer, 28-year-old Australian musician/producer Alice Ivy teams up with fellow Aussie Sycco, a rising singer-songwriter who was up for the Triple J Unearthed Artist of the Year award in 2020. Ivy delivers a welcome dose of reverb while Sycco plays with repeated phrases, working together to ensure this one gets stuck deep in listeners’ heads. – Lyndsey Havens

Aly & AJ, “Am I Alright”

As pop-rock duo Aly & AJ gear up to release the deluxe version of their stellar summer album a touch of the beat gets you up on your feet and then out and then into the sun, they continue to release even more inventive and edgy tracks with the latest being “Am I Alright.” The plinking riff and steadying drumbeat add vibrant color to the oftentimes dark question, “am I alright?” – L. Havens

Duran Duran ft. Tove Love, “Give It All Up”

Duran Duran delve into dark, moody atmospherics on “Give It All Up,” a highlight from their new LP Future Past. Even after four decades, the English hitmakers still have an ineffable alchemy together, and adding Swedish dark-pop chanteuse Tove Lo to the mix is a smart move that takes “Give” to the next level of melancholy pop bliss. – Joe Lynch

Ariana and the Rose ft. Cakes da Killa, “London Boys”

Synth-pop purveyor Ariana and the Rose and electro-infused rapper Cakes da Killa – neither one a stranger to the dancefloor – team up on “London Boys,” a thumping four-on-the-floor house banger about beautiful Brits that boasts an absolutely fire verse from Cakes. – J. Lynch

Craig David & MNEK, “Who You Are”

A gentle harp arrangement introduces this inspired pairing, as MNEK and Craig David find a meeting point between separate generations of radio-ready R&B. “Who You Are” is both understated and exciting, two pros delivering romantic deference and sidestepping unnecessary vocal theatrics. – Jason Lipshutz

Hope Tala, “Tiptoeing”

Hope Tala’s rhythmic pop often flows so naturally that it’s not hard to overlook the intricacies of her songwriting. New single “Tiptoeing,” which was created with Greg Kurstin, presents itself as both easily developed and fussily mastered, with Tala’s tone offering comfort but the production and lyrics striving for a complex equilibrium. – J. Lipshutz

Dreamer Boy feat. BENEE, “Are You Letting Go?”

Ready for the “Circles” of this fall? “Are You Letting Go?,” the new team-up between Dreamer Boy and BENEE, nails the balance between pop and alt-rock crooning that Post Malone rode to ubiquity two years ago, as BENEE interacts with electric guitar riffs and channels the same type of charm that helped “Supalonely” become her breakthrough. – J. Lipshutz

This tour announcement follows on from the release of PVRIS’ new single ‘My Way’, which came out last week.

“‘My Way’ is a song about accepting and embracing the trials and tribulations of the past, present, and future,” vocalist Lynn Gunn said of the track. “It’s about facing the pain, loss, hard times, and hard decisions while finding empowerment and humility (and a sprinkle of humour) through it all.”

She continued: “Life always pushes us toward great change and growth. When we stop fighting it and flow with it, we offer ourselves, and others, so much more. Whatever way it takes us, our paths are all so uniquely our own. You have your way and I have my way.”

The single follows on from the release of ‘Monster’ in August, which marked the start of a “new era” for the band, and ‘Burn It All Down’, the official anthem for the 2021 League of Legends World Championship.

PVRIS released their third album ‘Use Me’ in 2020.

Speaking about it to NME, Gunn said: “[Those songs] capture the chaos of the last two years. There’s so much that I’ll never be able to share. You’ve got to keep changing and growing. If someone or something is attacking you negatively, sometimes you’ve just got to have the power and the courage to walk away from it.”

Nike Dunk High “Pink Prime” Official Images

As it inches closer to its 37th anniversary, the Nike Dunk High continues to appear in compelling colorways. The latest?: A two-tone arrangement featuring vibrant “Pink Prime” flair.

Akin to some of the model’s most iconic styles, the newly-surfaced pair indulges in a “colorless” smooth leather base that allows for the tone that takes over the superimposed panels to revel in the spotlight. A near-fluorescent rose shade animates the overlays around the toe, along the tongue and across the heel, as well as the laces and branding on the tongue. Underfoot, the Air Jordan 1-like sole unit opts for a “White” midsole, whereas the tried-and-proven tread reverts to a “Pink Prime” makeup.

No official Nike SNKRS release date has been confirmed, but that’s likely to change soon. While you wait, enjoy images of the pair ahead.
