Sampha – “Plastic 100°C” (Live Performance)

Sampha details his debut album, and all the learning and personal trauma that accompanied its creation, in a new The FADER cover story, to be published on The FADER today at 10 a.m. EST.

“Plastic 100°C,” a beautifully raw song about pressure, is one of that album’s highlights. Its chorus refers to feeling like plastic melting in the heat, and one of its verses hints at the source of the discomfort Sampha describes: Usually I’d run home/ And tuck the issue under/ Oh/ Sleeping with my worries/ I didn’t really know what that lump was/ My luck.

Here, Sampha plays a singular acoustic version of that song. His performance was captured in one beautiful take at dusk, on the rooftop of his label Young Turks’s London office.

“There’s a lot I see, feel, really want to express,” Sampha tells The FADER. “I think that’s part of the thing, like — I feel so much.” In his most in-depth interview to date, he opens up about the journey he’s been on, the music he’ll be releasing, and his hopes for the future. “I wanna make things feel more magic to me, like how I felt when I was younger. When you grow older, you try and work harder to find the magic in life.”

SuperM want their own ‘Avengers’-style movie

When you’re in a band as large as seven-piece K-pop behemoth #SuperM, some arguments are bound to come up. So you can imagine the (supremely entertaining) disagreements that arose when we quizzed them for the latest episode of Would You Rather? We subjected Ten, Baekhyun, Lucas, Taemin, Taeyong, Kai, and Mark with some classics (would you rather a SuperM video game or SuperM film, for example) as well as some weird ones, and definitely sparked enough conversation to carry them through to the end of their world tour in February.

Mac Miller – Stopped Making Excuses (Documentary)

Mac Miller – Stopped Making Excuses

“I’m probably going to cry a few times through the course of this thing,” Mac Miller says in the first scene of Stopped Making Excuses, a new documentary produced and presented by The FADER.

What follows is a candid look at the Pittsburgh native’s past six years, starting with his ascent, when he was 19, as a popular but critically panned rapper. “I was an easy target. I admit that,” he says now. “It became one of those things where I got so much negativity that it almost became, like, ‘There’s no point to overly hate on this dude, let me look in and see what he’s doing.’ And when you look in, there’s some good music there.” Following his 2011 debut album, Billboard’s first independently released No.1 in over a decade, Mac moved to Los Angeles, where it seemed to many he was thriving. That’s where Andrew Nosnitsky met him for Mac Miller’s 2013 The FADER cover story, and where he played an endearing role in Earl Sweatshirt’s cover too.

But Mac says L.A. soon turned toxic, as he spiraled into increasing drug use. In one scene in Stopped Making Excuses, French Montana counsels him to slow down with codeine. In another, Mac appears in a bathtub wearing a long-sleeved shirt, top hat, and sunglasses, while saying “I’m not on drugs… drugs are on me.”

To finish 2015’s acclaimed GO:OD AM, he headed back to Pittsburgh to regain his composure. Watch him lead the Steelers onto the field, eat one of those weird sandwiches with french fries on it, and perform in his Taylor Allderdice High School graduation gown.

Now, he’s living in New York, trying to make sense of his past and orient himself to an independent, healthy future. “I’d rather be the corny white rapper than the drugged-out mess that can’t even get out of his house,” he says. “You don’t go down in history because you overdosed.”

YoungBoy Never Broke Again on dating, meeting Nicki Minaj, and finishing high school

YoungBoy Never Broke Again has done a lot of living in his 18 years on earth. In the past few months, the FADER cover star, who celebrated his birthday just last week, has put out two projects and has a lot more in the tank.

During a recent visit to The FADER, YoungBoy discussed his plans to return to high school to earn his diploma, his search for a girlfriend, and his plans for the future. “In ten years, I should not be rapping,” the Baton Rouge native told us. “I should be rich as fuck. On to a different career, on to some different shit.” Watch the full interview above.

Thundercat Draws Zack Fox

Zack Fox and Thundercat are true pals with a penchant for cracking wise. The two are known for their cripplingly funny back-and-forth Twitter antics, and recently touring together seems to have fully blasted their otherworldly comedic chemistry into a new galaxy.

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, we got up with the two for a chill drawing sesh, in which the duo flexed their artistic chops, and flamed themselves and the world as we know it into oblivion. Of the final portraits, Fox said, “I think both of these are fantastic pieces of art.” See the interview for yourself above.

Ski Mask the Slump God and Juice WRLD get baked on ‘Would You Rather’

On the latest episode of ‘Would You Rather,’ #SkiMask the Slump God and #JuiceWRLD tackle age-old conundrums, like whether or not all of your exes forming a band or joining the ‘Love & Hip-Hop’ cast would be more preferable; choosing between a daily consumption of either Hennessey or a handful of creme brûlée Juul pods; and the ideal freestyle battle. During one tangent we’re even treated to an unreleased freestyle from Juice while Ski performs live ad-libs.
