Big in Germany: ABBA and a Sea Shanty Singer Rule Year-End Charts

This year’s German pop charts are ruled by a Swedish group and a sea shanty singer.

ABBA‘s Voyage was the best-selling album of 2021 and “Wellerman” by Nathan Evans was the most popular single, according to GfK Entertainment, which tracks music sales and streaming in the German market. (The company’s charts count physical sales downloads and streams — plus airplay for singles — and weight them. The annual charts count sales from the 50th week of 2020 to the 49th week of 2021.)

The top ten albums list also includes two titles from the German schlager singer Helene Fischer (her new album, Rausch, at No. 2, plus and a compilation at No. 8), as well as AC/DC (No. 3, with Power Up), Iron Maiden (No. 6, with Senjutsu), and Adele (No. 7, after only a few weeks of sales for her new 30).

Nathan Evans

The singles chart includes Ed Sheeran (“Bad Habits,” No. 2), Tiësto (“The Business,” No. 3), The Weeknd (“Save Your Tears” at No. 5 and “Blinding Lights” at No. 9), The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber (“Stay,” No. 6) and Olivia Rodrigo (“Good 4 U,” No. 10).

ABBA’s Voyage has been especially impressive, according to related GfK data, given it delivered first-week sales of 235,000 and total sales of 400,000 in a country with about 83 million people — about a quarter of the U.S. population. A full 33,000 of those sales were vinyl.

The charts represent good news for Universal Music Group, which has ABBA, Fischer and Evans, among others. Overall, the company had five of the top ten albums and six of the top ten singles.

Beyonce Stuns in Ivy Park’s Halls of Ivy Collection: See the Pictures

Beyoncé is showing off pieces from her recently released Halls of Ivy collection from Ivy Park x Adidas.

The 40-year-old singer posted a series of images to her Instagram account on Wednesday (Dec. 15) of her wearing three items from the new Ivy Park drop — the black-and-white plaid suit jacket ($130), matching suit pants ($110) and the houndstooth all-over printed zip bra 2.0 ($75). To accessorize her look, Beyoncé wore oversized Louis Vuitton sunglasses, textured gold hoop earrings and of course, a pair of Adidas superstar sneakers with the classic shell toe.

Though the collection dropped on Dec. 9, fans looking to get Beyoncé’s exact look are out of luck: The jacket and pants are currently sold out, but the bra and sneakers are still available for purchase. The new collection features pieces for both adults and children, which the singer spoke about offering in Harper’s BAZAAR’s September 2021 issue.

“On our family vacations, we love to coordinate our outfits,” she told the magazine. “My kids are usually on set with me for shoots, and we’d find ourselves putting them in extra-extra-smalls so we could match. So, it is a natural progression for IVY PARK to introduce a selection of key silhouettes in children’s sizing.”

Beyoncé also gave an update on her new music to the magazine. “I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half,” she shared. “Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare. One chorus can have up to 200 stacked harmonies … Yes, the music is coming!”

Billboard’s Greatest Pop Stars of 2021: No. 1 — Taylor Swift

For this year’s update of our ongoing Greatest Pop Star by Year project, Billboard is counting down our staff picks for the top 10 pop stars of 2021 for the rest of this week. At No. 1. we remember the year in Taylor Swift — who rewrote industry rules and had one of the most impactful years of her storied pop career without even releasing an entirely new album.

“You guys turned a hard thing into a very, very wonderful experience,” Taylor Swift told an audience of diehard fans at a November screening of her All Too Well short film at New York City’s AMC Lincoln Square theater. Before unveiling the self-directed companion piece to the 10-minute version of the fan favorite epic of the same name, featured on the re-recorded Red (Taylor’s Version), Swift expressed gratitude to a group of supporters that helped turn a non-single breakup track from her original 2012 album into a signature song worthy of expanding past the double-digit minute mark. “All Too Well” could have been little more than a personally revealing footnote to her career, Swift pointed out; instead, the fans identified its intimate power, championed it, and ultimately revived it, to create one of the most eagerly anticipated revisited songs in pop history. “All of this is happening,” Swift told her audience, “because you made this happen.”

Well, yes and no. Swift is correct that the fandom that gathered around “All Too Well” — a long-form songwriting feat, with some of the most evocative lyricism of Swift’s career — in the nine years since its original release helped clear the path for “All Too Well (10-Minute Version)” as a capital-E Event stretching beyond the Swifties into the mainstream. Yet she deserves a ton of credit herself: No other popular artist harnessed that type of fan energy with as much passion and imagination in 2021 as Swift, across albums and platforms, on projects that challenged the modern music industry while still succeeding wildly within it.

Billboard’s Greatest Pop Stars of 2021:
Introduction & Honorable Mentions | Comeback of the Year: Willow | Rookie of the Year: Olivia Rodrigo
| No. 10: Bad BunnyNo. 9: Dua Lipa | No. 8: Justin Bieber | No. 7: Drake No. 6: BTSNo. 5: The Weeknd No. 4: Doja Cat No. 3: AdeleNo. 2: Lil Nas X

Swift began 2021 still riding high from a triumphant 2020 – a year she reasonably could have taken off, having delivered her Lover album in August 2019 and watched her planned Lover Fest stadium shows fall victim to the pandemic the following year. Instead, Swift fell down a musical rabbit hole that yielded two full albums and, in hindsight, catered perfectly to her songwriting strengths. The first one, Folklore scored the largest debut week for an album in 2020 upon its July release, and companion piece Evermore earned the fifth-largest in December, both ending 2020 and starting 2021 atop the Billboard 200 albums chart.

With Evermore, Swift continued the sonic reinvention kick-started by Folklore, an unexpected alt-folk exploration recorded in secret during quarantine with indie vets like The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Evermore would go on to spend three total weeks atop the Billboard 200 in 2021. Meanwhile, its hushed, woodsy single “Willow,” which launched atop the Hot 100 in December alongside the album release, grew into a radio success in the spring, ascending to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart in April.

Before that, however, Swift won another album of the year trophy. At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in March, Folklore took home the top prize — the third of Swift’s career, following wins for Fearless at the 2010 ceremony and 1989 in 2016. Not only did the win help Swift enter the record books, as the fourth artist overall and only woman with three album of the year wins (following Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon), the accomplishment was also a bit of personal validation after Swift’s two previous albums, 2017’s Reputation and 2019’s Lover, were not even nominated in the top category. Once again, Swift thanked the fans, this time for embracing the artistic swerve of her 2020 output: “You guys met us in this imaginary world that we created,” she said in her acceptance speech, “and we can’t tell you how honored we are forever by this.”

One month later, Swift returned to that first album of the year winner of hers. In April, Fearless (Taylor’s Version) kicked off the behemoth endeavor of re-recording her first six studio albums. Announced in 2019, the project followed the acquisition of Swift’s master recordings by Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings, as a way for her to essentially reclaim ownership over the period of her career that made her a household name. What could have been an industry curiosity based around a rights dispute instead played out like a widescreen revisit to a pivotal era of Swift’s career, as hits like “You Belong With Me” and “Love Story” were lovingly re-created, and previously unreleased tracks from the Fearless recording sessions were finally unveiled as “From The Vault” treasures.

The amount of care that Swift put into Fearless (Taylor’s Version) turned the 26-track set into a must-hear remake of the diamond-certified original, and fans embraced it as such. The full-length became the first re-recorded version of a previous No. 1 album to top the Billboard 200 albums chart upon its release, with the biggest debut week of 2021 at the time with 291,000 equivalent album units, according to MRC Data.

It wasn’t the only way that Swift’s towering legacy cast a shadow over the first half of 2021, either. In between the April release of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and the June announcement that Red (Taylor’s Version) would be the next re-recorded album to arrive in November, Swift proved a key influence, and contributor, to another artist’s year-defining album. Pop singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo hasn’t been shy about her love of Swift’s music over the course of her breakout year, name-checking the superstar as a sonic and spiritual guide when “Drivers License” was released back in January, and receiving an Instagram shout-out from Swift during the debut single’s quick ascent.

Rodrigo’s debut album Sour took the adoration even further upon its May release: the heart-wrenching piano ballad “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” borrowed from Swift’s own heart-wrenching piano ballad, 2017’s “New Year’s Day,” resulting in Swift and Jack Antonoff being listed as writers on the track. Two months after the album’s release, Rodrigo also added Swift, Antonoff and Annie Clark as co-writers to the post-breakup reflection “Deja Vu” due to the bridge’s similarities to Swift’s own complex-romance remembrance, 2019’s  “Cruel Summer.” Rodrigo is pop’s rookie of the year with 2021’s biggest breakthrough album — which Swift gets some of the credit for, in ways both figurative and literal.

Delays in the vinyl shipping of Evermore pushed the album back to the top of the Billboard 200 when the record was finally sent out to fans in June, displacing Sour at No. 1 for a nice bit of teacher-student pop interplay. Swift stayed active all summer, guesting on two songs on How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, the latest album from Dessner’s Big Red Machine project — a charming continuation of the Folklore/Evermore era of gentle songwriting and rustic textures — and tossing out the Taylor’s Version re-recording of 1989’s “Wildest Dreams” to have a little fun with an unexpected viral moment the song was enjoying on TikTok.

But by then, the 1989 era wasn’t the one fans were anxiously awaiting to revisit. If Red (Taylor’s Version) had simply matched Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in terms of fanfare and listenership, Swift’s year would have still been pretty spectacular. Instead, her second re-recorded album wildly outpaced its predecessor in nearly every way, turning the release of “All Too Well (10-Minute Version)” into a cultural sensation — The short film! The remarkable SNL performance! The new lyrical allusions that launched a thousand Jake Gyllenhaal jokes! — and another chart-topper for Swift. With its November debut atop the Hot 100, “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)” also became the longest No. 1 in the chart’s history — in the age of TikTok virality and dwindling attention spans, no less.

The expanded “All Too Well” wasn’t the only new revelation from the set, which also boasted new collaborations with Phoebe Bridgers, Ed Sheeran and Chris Stapleton on old “From The Vault” tracks; the Stapleton team-up, “I Bet You Think About Me,” has been getting airplay on Swift’s old stomping grounds of country radio. In the end, Red (Taylor’s Version) drove as much conversation as any of Swift’s recent all-new studio albums, and scored a blockbuster debut, with 605,000 first-week equivalent album units moved — good for the third-best debut week of 2021 with, it bears repeating, the majority of its songs released nearly a decade earlier.

Even without a proper new album in 2021, Swift sent three separate projects to the top spot of the Billboard 200 during the calendar year — the first female artist to accomplish that feat in the chart’s 65-year history. And in November, one final domino fell for Swift’s re-recordings project when iHeartRadio announced that it would now only be playing Taylor’s Versions of her older hits from each album as they rolled out – after streaming platforms had already given them prominent placement on main pages and major playlists. In addition to the impressive sales of her re-recorded albums, the reactions from the streaming and radio worlds underline the widespread acceptance that these new recordings have replaced the classic versions as the ones listeners will be digesting and caring about moving forward.

As Swift enters 2022, she once again has the chance to make history: Evermore is nominated for the album of the year Grammy, and a victory at the Jan. 31 ceremony would make her the most celebrated artist in the 64-year history of the category. While other popular artists are rightfully celebrating award nominations and chart achievements, Swift can do both, while also credibly changing the way artists can approach creative ownership and sonic shifts. If Swift changed the game in the mid-2010s when pivoting from country to pop, playing it top 40’s way and earning the splashiest commercial wins of her career, including the distinction of also being Billboard’s Greatest Pop Star of 2015, the past year found her rejecting the game entirely and drawing up her own rules. Now, she has the power to pull any sound she wants into her mainstream orbit, or make any industry institution reckon with her impact. She could release a 20-minute version of a song on her next re-recorded album, and you’d be foolish to bet against it becoming a hit.

Taylor Swift is making the type of moves within and outside of her music that elevate an artist from superstar to legend. Those moves are often very hard to execute, but no one who had been paying attention was the least bit surprised when she stuck each landing. Wind in her hair, Swift is here, and making it look all too easy.

Il Divo Wish ‘Speedy Recovery’ For Hospitalized Member Carlos Marin

Classical crossover vocal group Il Divo revealed on Thursday (Dec. 16) that group member Carlos Marin has been hospitalized for an undisclosed illness. “Our dear friend and partner, Carlos, is in the hospital,” they tweeted about the 53-year-old member of the multi-national quartet who’ve sold tens of millions of albums since their formation in 2004.

“We are hoping and praying for a speedy recovery,” they added about the Spanish baritone who has toured the world alongside bandmates Urs Bühler (Sweden), David Miller (U.S.) and Sébastien Izambard (France). At press time a spokesperson for the group had not returned requests for comment and additional information on Marin’s condition.

Last week, the group postponed their planned UK Christmas tour until next year, “due to illness.” At the time they did not specify the nature of the illness, writing, “Il Divo are deeply sorry to their fans, but look forward to returning to the road again in the new year and seeing you all in the run up to next Christmas.”

A video posted on Dec. 6 from a concert in Bath, England appeared to be the last time Marin was recorded on stage, with planned shows in Hull and Nottingham canceled before the group announced the postponement of the tour on Dec. 10. The quartet’s site still lists a series of U.S. shows slated to kick off on Jan. 6 with a show at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Saratoga, Florida; the early 2022 leg is currently slated to run through a March 6 gig at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Ticketholders were encouraged to hold on to their existing tickets for the UK holiday tour, which will be valid for the rescheduled 2022 dates.

Supergrass postpone December shows due to rise in Omicron cases

Supergrass have postponed all of their remaining December shows due to the “uncertainty” caused by a rise of Omicron cases in the UK.

The band were set to play their first hometown show in 12 years on December 18 at the O2 Academy Oxford, followed by a gig in Glasgow and a headline show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. All three shows will be rescheduled for next year.

Announcing the postponement on Twitter, Supergrass wrote: “Folks, we’re so sorry but we’re going to have to postpone our December shows. A lot has changed over the last few days with the rise in Omicron cases. It’s been an incredibly tough call to make but we feel to play these shows at this point in time would be the wrong thing to do for all concerned.”

“We want to give you all the best show we can, everyone to feel safe and for no fan to lose out at Christmas time due to all the uncertainty at the moment. We’re gutted to have to do this and we hope you all understand.”

So gutted to announce this. Looking to reschedule asap in the new year. pic.twitter.com/cOWS93LNRA

— Supergrass (@SupergrassHQ) December 16, 2021

The list of postponed shows is as follows:

DECEMBER

18 – O2 Academy Oxford, Oxford
19 – O2 Academy, Glasgow
20 – O2 Academy Brixton, London

The likes of The Charlatans, Sam Fender, Paul Weller and Coldplay have all scrapped recent shows due to COVID infections while The Streets have pulled their entire 2022 tour.

Last week, Boris Johnson announced ‘Plan B’ measures that made COVID passports mandatory for gigs and nightclubs, with people needing to show proof they’re fully vaccinated, or provide a negative test.

However yesterday, he confirmed that the government had no plans to close pubs, venues or nightclubs. “We are not closing hospitality or stopping parties,” he said, though he did urge the public to take caution when attending social events and emphasised the importance of regular testing.

This messaging has created what some industry professionals are calling a “steal lockdown” with many venues “on the brink of collapse” due to postponed gigs, a “catastrophic” drop in attendance and worries about a January lockdown.

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, has hit back at Johnson’s messaging. “You can’t tell people to ‘think carefully’ before going to pubs and restaurants and then fail to provide any support for the workers/businesses affected,” he said on social media.

“The Government needs to bring forward a support package TODAY for hospitality, events, music and other affected sectors.”

Government to “continue to listen” to industry leaders with venues and clubs in COVID peril

The UK government has promised to “continue to work with industry leaders” in the coming days, while music venues and nightclubs are calling for immediate help and support amid the Omicron COVID crisis.

READ MORE: Get £10 off Fightback Lager and help save UK music venues

Following the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant and new restrictions imposed upon the UK, a huge drop in turn-outs at shows and events due to either illness or reduced public confidence has left music venues “on the brink of collapse”.

Now is the time when many venues, clubs, pubs and theatres make enough money to see them through the first quarter of the next year. This is also having a huge impact on the staff, crew and freelancers who make night-time entertainment happen, with many already losing work well into 2022.

Further confusion spread when Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the government would not be “closing hospitality or stopping parties”, while urging the public to take caution when attending social and nightlife events.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham Tweeted this morning (December 16): “You can’t tell people to ‘think carefully’ before going to pubs and restaurants and then fail to provide any support for the workers/businesses affected. The Government needs to bring forward a support package TODAY for hospitality, events, music and other affected sectors.”

To be clear – if support is provided to businesses, it should be on the clear condition that some is passed on to staff facing reduced income over the holiday period or being laid off (ie a furlough).

— Andy Burnham (@AndyBurnhamGM) December 16, 2021

When NME approached The Treasury for a comment today, they provided assurance that talks for support were ongoing while the immediate help requested appeared to not be imminently available.

“This Government has done whatever it takes at every stage to support lives and livelihoods throughout this pandemic – and of course we will continue to do so,” said Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak.

“We understand that this is a concerning time for businesses. Myself and my wider team met with business representatives earlier today, listened to their concerns and will continue to work with industry leaders over the coming days.”

He added: “To keep safeguarding our economic recovery and the lives and livelihoods of the British people our priority is now to make sure everyone has the opportunity to ‘Get Boosted Now’.”

The Treasury Ministerial team met with representatives from the likes of UK Hospitality, Prezzo, Nandos and UK live music body LIVE. The Chancellor will be returning to the UK on an earlier flight to resume discussions with business leaders tomorrow.

In just one week, losses have come to over £2million with 86 per cent of grassroots music venues reporting negative impacts and 61 per cent being forced to cancel at least one event due to touring party members testing positive for COVID, functions being cancelled by organisers or poor ticket sales. Overall, attendance at shows held at grassroots venues has dropped by 23 per cent (but up to 40 per cent across live music in general) with over 140,000 ‘no shows’ from ticket holders resulting in a 27 per cent decline in gross income.

“This is the busiest time of the year for grassroots music venues, representing more than 20 per cent of their annual income being raised during the party season,” said Beverley Whitrick, Strategic Director of MVT (Music Venue Trust).

READ MORE: “We wanted togetherness and community”: how gigs came back with a bang in 2021

She continued: “Rapid declines in attendance at this time of year represent an exponential threat to the whole sector, and losses of this magnitude cannot be sustained without throwing hundreds of music venues into crisis mode and at risk of permanent closure. A ‘no show’ isn’t just lost ticket income, it’s lost bar take and excess staff costs.”

MVT CEO Mark Davyd said the current crisis threw venues back to exactly where we were in March 2020″, arguing that once again “confusing government messaging had created a ‘stealth lockdown’ with venues apparently able to open but in reality haemorrhaging money at a rate that will inevitably result in permanent closures unless the government acts quickly to prevent it.”

CREDIT: Rob Pinney/Getty Images

Among other solutions, the MVT are calling upon Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries to “immediately create a ring-fenced stabilisation fund to protect the sector”, including £1.7million from the lifeline £1.57billion Culture Recovery Fund which has reportedly yet to be spent or allocated.

“We have been here before,” said Davyd. “This time the government already has all the tools in place that it needs to manage this impact and prevent permanent closures in the grassroots music venue sector.

“The Culture Recovery Fund can be swiftly adapted to mitigate this economic impact, the money is already there and waiting, we just need the Secretary of State to act quickly. The government previously used Business Rate suspension and VAT cuts to support and sustain the sector. We don’t need to spend time considering the situation; the government already knows what can be done and can choose very quickly to do it.”

Nightclubs meanwhile have seen footfall down 30 per cent since last Thursday and likely to reach 50 per cent or more in the days ahead. The UK’s nightlife is likely to be put in a very perilous situation going forward.

“The Christmas period is really important for building up cash reserves so that we’re able to survive Q1 of 2022,” said NTIA leader Michael Kill. “Without this, the result is a threat to the very survival of thousands of businesses and jobs. “This downturn in trade around the narrative from government around socialising and the Omicron variant has obviously created some uncertainty and hit the confidence of the customer.”

In order to help nightlife survive, Kill and the NTIA are calling for a VAT for the sector at 12.5 per cent, additional grants unique to hospitality, and for the government to reinstate furlough for the first quarter of 2022.

Music fans and gig-goers are being encouraged to help their local venues survive by purchasing official merchandise in the days ahead.

This comes at a time when UK music venues are already facing £90million of debt due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic.

Dr. Dre calls Paul McCartney “one of my heroes” in new photo with the Beatles star

Dr. Dre has shared a photo of him with Paul McCartney, and called the former Beatles member “one of my heroes”.

READ MORE: ‘The Beatles: Get Back’ review: Peter Jackson’s long and winding but utterly unmissable epic

Sharing the BTS scene clip of the pair getting a selfie, Dre called McCartney “cool AF” and said he was “chillin with one of the fucking Beatles!!”.

The legendary producer and former NWA member then went on to call McCartney “one of my heroes”.

This isn’t the first time the pair have posed for a selfie either, with McCartney having previously shared a snap of him and Dre at the post-Grammy Beats Music Party in 2014.

Back in October it was teased that a new Dre album would be released in December, with DJ Battlecat sharing a timeline of ‘The Aftermath Takeover’ with “Dr. Dre new music” pencilled in for December.

However, Battlecat could have been referring to the six new songs that Dre released yesterday (December 15) as part of GTA Online’s expansion The Contract. The tracks included collaborations with EminemAnderson .Paak and Snoop Dogg while the storyline of the game saw players trying to retrieve the “lost” Dre tracks.

Dre recently confirmed he’s been in the studio, recording an album with Marsha Ambrosius, with both artists describing the finished product as some of their “best work”.

Dre shared an image of himself in the studio watching an orchestra record, captioning the picture: “I just finished recording an album with Marsha Ambrosius. ‘Casablanco’ I had a blast!! This is some of my best work!!”

Meanwhile Paul McCartney’s bass recently broke a world record. The guitar, which was used on the road and in the studio with Wings, became the most expensive bass ever sold at auction.

It fetched £374,905 for the charity Music Rising, while other instruments from the likes of U2, Elton John, Pearl Jam, Rush, Tom Morello, Joan Jett, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Kings Of Leon, Johnny Marr, Green Day, Radiohead and Arcade Fire’s Win Butler helped raise over $2million (£1.5million) for the cause.

Union LA Also Has A Nike Cortez Collaboration In The Works

Aside from their 30th anniversary Air Jordan 4s, Union LA has kept quiet throughout the year. But in 2022, that will quickly change as the boutique has teamed up with Nike for a small sum of collaborative releases. And in addition to their already revealed Air Jordan 2 and Dunk Low, we’re to see two colorways of the Nike Cortez.

Reflective of past offerings, Union’s Cortez is no simple palette swap. While the bones are relatively true to the original, the paneling and sole are much more unique, each opting for a complex design. Underfoot, the midsole foam has been heavily worn away and patched over at the fore and rear. Above, suedes wrap the toe and side with many an individual piece, while thick canvas lays underneath in its striped pattern. “UN/LA” tags, then, hang on the side as per usual, branding in tandem with the tongue label and heel tab’s own text and Frontman logo.

Color-wise, one option veers close to the AJ4 “Guava Ice” offered in 2022. Pinks lay atop the Swoosh, lace, and vamp, while tan builds out many of the exterior fixtures. Blue plays a subtle part over top, highlighting every instance of insignia. In contrast, the alternate is rendered near entirely in black, with accenting pops of green and light cool tones.

Charlie Puth Tests Positive for COVID-19: ‘I Think the Worst Is Behind Me’

Charlie Puth has tested positive COVID-19, he told fans via Twitter Wednesday (Dec. 15). The “Attention” singer shared a brief message abut the severity of his condition and also issued a brief warning for the holiday season.

“Hey everyone. I tested positive for Covid this morning,” he wrote.  “I’m not feeling amazing but I think the worst is behind me. I write you this update, feeling like complete a–, in hopes that you will be safe and careful this holiday season. Love you and I’ll speak to you very soon.”

Though Puth is now forced to take a break, he was gearing up to release his forthcoming single, “Light Switch,” before learning he had COVID-19. The singer teased the release of the track on his Instagram account earlier in December, and shared snippets of the song’s creation via his TikTok page on Sept. 16 — the video went viral and later amassed 14. 2 million likes. Puth has yet to provide an official release date for the track, but it is currently available to be pre-saved on Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. The 30-year-old has not announced any plans to head out on tour for 2022.

Puth recently collaborated with Elton John for the veteran singer-songwriter’s album The Lockdown Sessions. The body of work was released on Oct. 22, and their collaborative track, “After All,” was released as the second single after John and Dua Lipa’s “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix),” which reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

See Puth’s tweet below.

Hey everyone. I tested positive for Covid this morning. I’m not feeling amazing but I think the worst is behind me. I write you this update, feeling like complete ass, in hopes that you will be safe and careful this holiday season. Love you and I’ll speak to you very soon.
