‘Drag Race’ Star Ginger Minj Cast In Upcoming ‘Hocus Pocus’ Sequel: See Who She’s Playing

Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race have come to know the Florida queen Ginger Minj quite well. Following her appearances on season 7 of the show, as well as All Stars seasons 2 and 6, Minj is ready to finally take on a new role.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Ginger has joined the cast of the hotly-anticipated sequel to Hocus Pocus on Disney+. The new role will see Minj playing a drag queen impersonating Winifred Sanderson, the evil, campy witch portrayed in the 1993 original by Bette Midler.

In a piece of footage shared from the set earlier this month, fans got a first glimpse of the Glamour Toad all glammed up, wearing a red updo wig and a large dress in the style of Midler’s iconic character. Neither Minj nor Disney have commented on her casting in the film.

This is not Ginger’s first time taking to the silver screen in a new drag persona — in 2018’s Dumplin’, Minj portrayed a drag queen who helped the protagonist, a wannabe beauty queen, realize her true potential. In RuPaul’s scripted Netflix series AJ & The Queen, Minj played a personal assistant who ultimately shows up to a part in drag, inspired by the titular queen’s charisma in drag. Currently, Minj is playing Albie in a Music Theater Works production of La Cage Aux Folles in Wilmette, Illinois.

The sequel to the fan-favorite film was announced to be in development in October 2019, with Hairspray director Adam Shankman joining the film’s roster back in March 2020. Back in January 2022, Shankman gave fans a long-awaited update, announcing that filming had wrapped on Hocus Pocus 2, with all three of the original Sanderson Sisters (played by Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) returning. “Coming to you #halloween #2022 on @disneyplus,” he teased at the end of his post.

Billboard has reached out to Disney and Ginger Minj for comment.

Watch Coldplay’s new manga-inspired animated video for ‘People Of The Pride’

Coldplay have shared their manga-inspired new video for ‘People Of The Pride’ – you can watch it below.

READ MORE: Coldplay: “This is our period of having no fear”

Directed by Paul Dugdale, the clip mixes live footage from the band’s October 2021 performance at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena with robot-heavy, dystopian animation.

The track follows previous singles ‘Let Somebody Go‘, ‘Higher Power‘, ‘My Universe‘ and ‘Coloratura’.

The song is taken from Coldplay’s recent album ‘Music Of The Spheres’, which arrived last October.

The band recently shared an expansive cover of Kid Cudi‘s 2008 hit ‘Day ‘n’ Nite as part of a new Spotify Singles release, which also features a new version of ‘Let Somebody Go’, their recent collaboration with Selena Gomez.

“This is the first time I think that we’ve really taken proper time to record a cover, because in my head I could hear a version of it quite different from the original, that hopefully just reinforces what a brilliant song it is,” Martin said of the cover. “One way or another I hope that anyone listening will just think, ‘Wow, Kid Cudi is amazing.’”

Coldplay are set to embark on an eco-friendly world tour later this week on the back of their new album, with dates scheduled at London’s Wembley Stadium, Glasgow, Paris, Berlin and other European cities throughout July and August.

During a Big Read interview with NME last October, bassist Guy Berryman said the band had “made a great start” with the sustainable shows. “Whatever we end up doing, will be a Phase One, but there always has to be an improvement and a continual cycle,” he said.

Last year’s inaugural South Facing Festival included sets from Dizzee Rascal, Supergrass and The Streets.

Ashcroft, who released his latest album ‘Acoustic Hymns Vol.1’ last October, is also due to perform at Millennium Square in Leeds this summer. You can find his full schedule and ticket details here.

Back in January, the singer-songwriter shared a new remix of his track ‘C’mon People (We’re Making It Now)’ featuring Liam Gallagher.

In a three-star review, NME said that Ashcroft’s ‘Acoustic Hymns Vol.1’ – a re-imagining of “classic songs” from his back catalogue – was “well worth a listen, and an excellent reminder of some of both Ashcroft and The Verve’s finest work”.

Richard Ashcroft said late last year that he wants to write some material for Rihanna and Adele.

“I like big hits. I write big melodies and big choruses,” he explained. “I like singers where you know the chorus will be heard by billions of people.”

BTS, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo & More Set to Perform on 2022 Grammys

The Recording Academy has announced the first slate of performers for the 64th annual Grammy Awards, set for April 3 in Las Vegas. Current nominees Brothers Osborne, BTS, Brandi Carlile, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, and Olivia Rodrigo are all set to take the stage.

LGBTQ artists are well-represented in this first batch of performers, with Carlile, Lil Nas X and TJ Osborne of Brothers Osborne all being out and proud.

This will be the third year in a row Eilish has performed on the Grammy telecast. She and her brother and collaborator Finneas performed “When the Party’s Over” on the 2020 telecast and “Everything I Wanted” last year. Eilish is nominated for record of the year with “Happier Than Ever.” She won in that category the last two years with “bad guy” and “Everything I Wanted.” Should she win again, she would become the first artist in Grammy history to win record of the year three years running.

This will be the second year in a row that BTS has had its own spotlight performance number on the Grammys. They performed “Dynamite” last year. They are nominated for best pop duo/group performance for the second year in a row for their megahit “Butter,” which topped the Hot 100 for 10 weeks, longer than any other hit in 2021.

Carlile had a career breakthrough moment in 2019 when she performed “The Joke” on the Grammy telecast. That ballad was nominated for both record and song of the year. Carlile is nominated in both of those categories again this year with “Right on Time.”

Lil Nas X teamed with Billy Ray Cyrus to perform their megahit “Old Town Road (Remix),” a record of the year nominee, on the 2020 telecast. Lil Nas X is nominated in that category again this year – and also song of the year this time around for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).”

Lil Nas X and Harlow are expected to perform “Industry Baby,” a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and a Grammy nominee for best melodic rap performance. Lil Nas X could also perform “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” which was also a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100.

Brothers Osborne are nominated for their tender ballad “Younger Me.” Rodrigo has nominations for both “drivers license” and “good 4 u.” Carlile is nominated for three different works — her solo hit “Right on Time,” “A Beautiful Noise” (a collab with former Grammy host Alicia Keys) and “Same Devil” (a collab with Brandy Clark).

The Grammys used to have a policy that artists could only perform their current nominated works, but that restriction is no longer in effect.

The 64th annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, April 3, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS. The show will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

The show will be held at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will be the first time the show has ever emanated from Las Vegas – or from any city other than Los Angeles, New York or Nashville.

The show will be hosted for the second year in a row by Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.

The 64th annual Grammy Awards are produced by Fulwell 73 Productions for the Recording Academy. Raj Kapoor serves as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Ben Winston and Jesse Collins as executive producers, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay as co-executive producer. Hamish Hamilton returns as director, and Eric Cook as supervising producer with Tabitha D’umo, Patrick Menton, Fatima Robinson, and David Wild as producers.

The Recording Academy and CBS issued “social teasers” from their social accounts on Monday evening, to encourage fans to theorize who will be announced today, but is the first official confirmation.

Chart Rewind: In 1997, Howard Stern Was King of the Billboard 200

By 1997, Howard Stern, then 43, was already the self-proclaimed “King of All Media.”

Then, Paramount Pictures’ release of Private Parts, the Stern biopic starring himself, Robin Quivers, Fred Norris, producer Gary Dell’Abate and other members of his on-air radio team, made the boast closer to the truth and pushed Stern into pop-culture’s mainstream – and sent him to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Based on Stern’s best-selling 1993 memoir of the same name, Private Parts finished atop the U.S. box office in its opening weekend (March 7-9, 1997), earning $14.6 million (and $41.2 million to date, according to Box Office Mojo). Its dominance quickly extended to the Billboard 200, where the movie’s soundtrack debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated March 15, 1997. It sold 178,000 copies in week one in the U.S. and has moved 564,000 to date, according to MRC Data.

The album includes songs by AC/DC, Cheap Trick and Van Halen, along with Stern’s performances of “The Great American Nightmare” (with Rob Zombie) and “Tortured Man” (with The Dust Brothers), which later served, respectively, as his radio show’s opening and closing theme songs. Also on the set are bits from Private Parts, from a disastrous DJ intro during his earliest on-air days on Boston University’s WTBU to likewise disheartening feedback from his first professional program director (the track’s title: “Howard You Stink.”)

In 2005, Stern left terrestrial radio (from then-WXRK New York) to join what is now SiriusXM satellite radio. Its initial 400,000 subscribers have since exploded to more than 34 million, in no small part because of his appeal. In 2012, he was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame and, in his most family-friendly turn yet, he became a judge on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, where he stayed for four seasons through 2015.

Stern signed a five-year contract extension with SiriusXM in December 2020 (as part of a larger 12-year deal that grants the broadcasting company further use of his audio and video content). In a 2014 Billboard cover story, Stern said, “There’s no reason to [leave SiriusXM]. This is my dream. I feel like we’ve created a new home for broadcasters. I’m doing radio the way I wanted to as a little kid.”

Stern echoed his sentiments in December 2020, calling SiriusXM “the greatest content provider in media today,” adding: “SiriusXM, I love you, and I’m thrilled to continue our journey together.”

At long last Shlump has finally unveiled his anticipated WAKAAN-released EP, Drift Away. The four-track project opens strongly with ‘Forever,’ which is already one of the most impressive and heaviest bangers of the year. The track does a great job in building a crazy amount of energy and tension before dropping into alien bass madness. As you’ll hear below, Shlump’s inventive sound design and psychedelic production style are on full display and really help set the tone for the rest of his impressive EP. With so much bass music around today, ‘Forever’ keeps things fresh and exciting and we can’t imagine how crazy hearing this track at the festival mainstage would be. Check out the single via Spotify and be sure to read what the artist himself has to say about the inspiration behind this EP.

“This EP really came together on its own. The songs were created around the same time in my life and mesh together really well. We all have ideas of what we are doing with our lives and that create purpose and meaning, but sometimes I feel like it is equally important to not try so hard and to let things happen. From one part of life to the next, we drift away – not running and at the same time not staying still.”– Shlump

Rishi Sunak urged to scrap “damaging” VAT hike on ticket prices

Rishi Sunak has been urged to scrap a large VAT tax hike on concert and live event ticket prices.

READ MORE: No wonder Jacob Rees-Mogg hasn’t read NME: the Tories don’t care about saving UK music

The 7.5 per cent increase, which is set to kick in on April 1, comes ahead of the Chancellor’s Spring Statement on March 23 when he will outline a mini-Budget.

VAT is currently charged at 12.5 per cent on tickets for live events but Sunak is planning to restore the tax return to its pre-pandemic level of 20 per cent.

UK Music chief Jamie Njoku-Goodwin has written to the Chancellor ahead of the mini-Budget in a bid to get the tax hike scrapped.

“The planned hike in VAT could not come at a worse time for millions of music fans and the live music industry, which was shut down for almost two years due to the pandemic,” he wrote.

“Pushing up VAT to 20 per cent would be hugely damaging for the music industry and leave music fans facing a cost of gigging crisis. The rise would come at a time when we are rebuilding post-COVID-19, with hundreds of concerts planned over the next few months.”

Fans at Download 2021 CREDIT: Katja Ogrin/Getty Images

He continued, addressing Sunak: “We would urge the Chancellor to give people who already face rising prices and grim headlines every day a little lift by ditching the ticket tax and abandoning the VAT hike. Dumping the planned VAT hike would help keep ticket prices down for fans and help music businesses pay down debts they built up during the pandemic, generate thousands of new jobs and nurture new talent.

“It would help the music industry continue to recover and rebuild after the COVID-19 pandemic, which wiped out around one in three jobs in our sector.”

UK Music has also called for a six-point plan including extending the current 50 per cent discount on business rates on music venues, and more funding to help British performers touring the EU to navigate extra costs and post-Brexit red tape.

It is also calling for a Music Export Office to help boost sales of British music abroad, which dropped 23 per cent from £2.9billion in 2019 to £2.3billion in 2020 due to COVID-19.

It comes after Sunak was previously criticised for his handling of the Brexit touring fiasco – as well as potential future provisions for nightclubs and music venues.

Speaking to NME at the time ahead of the announcement of a new £750million government-backed insurance scheme for gigs and festivals, The Chancellor said that this was “really, really good news” for UK touring artists.

When asked if he’d financially back the proposed export office specifically to help UK artists tour and promote their music overseas, he added: “We already have existing budgets that the Department For International Trade run to help promote exports of all types. We’re opening up new markets, and that’s part of our post-Brexit future – to create strong links with other markets. For example, the terms that we’ve agreed with Australia allow for an increased amount of mobility for young people between our countries, which is something that young people will value, particularly within this industry which has a lot of young people working in it.”

Meanwhile, live music industry leaders and insiders recently criticised the “clueless” UK government and opened up about the problems that remain for artists and crew wishing to tour in Europe, one year on from the feeling that the sector has been dealt a “No Deal Brexit”.

Raising the issue in the House Of Commons, Labour MP and DCMS Select Committee Member Kevin Brennan put it to Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Conservative Leader of the House of Commons, that the government had not been active and engaged enough in helping overcome the remaining obstacles for live music on the continent and referred to our recent article about the ongoing frustration surrounding post-Brexit touring.

Rees-Mogg defended the government’s current stance and approach for artists wishing to tour the EU after Brexit and said that he had “not read the New Musical Express this morning, or indeed on any morning that I can ever recall.”

Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun and Kim Nam-gil to star in upcoming Netflix original series

Girls’ Generation member Seohyun and Through The Darkness actor Kim Nam-gil will join the cast of Netflix’s upcoming original series Song of the Bandits.

READ MORE: Taeyeon talks Girls’ Generation: “It always feels like home when we’re all together”

On March 14, Netflix Korea confirmed that Seohyun and Kim will join the cast of its upcoming original period drama. Song of the Bandits is also set to star veteran actor Yoo Jae-myung (Hometown), Lee Hyun-wook (Mine), and rising actress Lee Ho-jung (Nevertheless).

The historical drama will be set in the 1920s, a period during which Korea was under Japanese colonial rule. Song of the Bandits will follow a group of Koreans who gather in Northeastern China as they attempt to rebel against Japanese rule and protect their homes.

According to The Korea Times, Seohyun will star as Nam Hee-shin, an employee at the Choson Railway Bureau. Meanwhile, Kim will play the character of Lee Yoon, a former Japanese soldier who later rebels to protect Koreans against the Japanese military.

Song of the Bandits will be helmed by director Hwang Joon-hyuk, who had previously worked on youth drama Black Dog (2019). He is joined by screenwriter Han Jung-hoon, who made his debut in 2011’s Vampire Prosecutor.

Seohyun recently starred in Netflix’s BDSM-themed romantic comedy film Love and Leashes as Jung Ji-woo, a confident office worker who begins a contractual dominant and submissive relationship with a co-worker.

In a four-star review of the Love and Leashes, NME‘s Carmen Chin said the show was “poignant in informing and representing the value of sexual expression and acceptance”.

On the other hand, Kim’s last project was the crime procedural Through The Darkness, where he played criminal profiler Song Ha-young. The recently-concluded series was loosely based a non-fiction book by Korea’s first real-life criminal profiler Kwon Il-yong and journalist Ko Na-mu.

Reebok’s Second Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Collection Celebrates The Series’ Iconic Villains

With their original Power Rangers collection, Reebok celebrated the Mighty Morphin series’ main cast, nodding to both the Rangers themselves as well as their respective Zords. The five-piece capsule was a well-crafted ode to the franchise, whose packaging came together to form the beloved Megazord.

As they embark on yet another partnership, the footwear brand is highlighting the show’s equally iconic villains, creating three colorways inspired by antagonists Rita Repulsa, Rito Revolto, and Lord Zedd.

The Instapump Fury is an accurate impression of the vile space witch, as the blacked out bladder and light pink base feature gilded accents reminiscent of the character’s own garb. Even her jewel-adorned staff and headwear are present along the tongue and faux fur heel, respectively. Rito Revolto and his Hurrikaze II Low also bear a resemblance to one another, with bone white dressing the pair’s lateral and camo the side opposite. Finally, the pack culminates with Lord Zedd’s Answer IV, which is outfitted with nods to the Evil Space Aliens leader’s red body and silver armor. Additionally, all three shoes will display the signature moments of their influences.

Accompanied by a series of apparel, the aforementioned colorways will be available at Reebok.com beginning March 25th.

Megan Thee Stallion Wants You to Take a Bite of Her Extra-Sweet ‘H-Town Hottie Pie’

Megan Thee Stallion did the math and realized that the only way to properly celebrate the nerdiest holiday is with a sweet and savory dessert. The rapper helped her Hotties raise a fork to Pi Day on Tuesday (March 14) — the global party commemorating the Greek letter that is used as mathematical symbol to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter (3.14159…) — by offering up the mouth-watering “Megan’s H-Town Hottie Pie.”

The $59 delight cooked up with GoldBelly,  was inspired by Megan’s “hometown of Houston and her love for all things sweet,” according to a statement. It is described as a “deliciously decadent” mix of sweet and salty, rich and gooey, made up of coconut, pecans, butterscotch chips, dusted with edible gold. “With a hint of salt and a whole lot of sugar, she’s serving up a Texas-sized dose of sweetness,” reads a description.

Each 10″ pie serves 8 people and arrives in a custom box, slated to arrive after St. Patrick’s day (March 17). The treat, of course, also serves as a brand extension for the rapper’s new collab with Dua Lipa, “Sweetest Pie,” which dropped last week.

“Y’all, I’m so excited to partner with the hotties at Goldbelly,” Megan said in a release. “Ya girl wanted to create the sweetest pie of the century and my fam at Goldbelly did not disappoint. With the Texas-sized dose of sweetness it’s serving up, if you don’t have my pie in your mouth you are missing out!” In a Goldbelly TV video promoting the pie, Megan dug into a series of scrumptious pies, from pecan to sweet potato, sour cherry and Texas Trash Pie, giving her honest reviews of the mouth-watering dessert spread.

“That look like a science project, I’m scared,” she said of a mint flavored confection, fearing it might taste like toothpaste. “It’s fire, it’s actually really f—ing good… I’m shook, cuz I don’t like green s–t… except money,” she joked during the taste test.

Watch Megan talk about her sweetest pie on Goldbelly TV below.
