Ed Sheeran is rooting for Sir Elton John to dethrone him on the U.K. chart, and Sheeran is recruiting his own fans to ditch their favorite and support Team Elton instead.

The Rocket Man’s expedition on the U.K. charts is even more historic after he became the first artist in history to score a U.K. top 10 single in six different decades, thanks to “Cold Heart” with Dua Lipa and remixed by Pnau. “Cold Heart,” which is currently seated at No. 2 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, is his 33rd top 10 on the tally, and it’s inching closer to sitting on the throne. Now, Sheeran is pushing his own fanbase to help John secure the spot, despite it being currently occupied by his own single “Shivers.”

“@eltonjohn is so close to knocking me off the #1 spot in the U.K. It will be his first number one in almost twenty years and I really want it to happen,” Sheeran wrote Thursday (Oct. 14) on Instagram next to a sweet black-and-white photo of him lovingly looking down at the seated legend. “Please go buy/stream/download Cold Heart with @dualipa now, 15 weeks at #1 was more than I ever expected anyway, love you all. Who doesn’t wanna be knocked off by Elton anyway.”

Sheeran has been pretty comfortable on the U.K. Singles Chart for months, with his previous single “Bad Habits” ruling for 11 weeks and “Shivers” replacing it at No. 1, where it’s remained for the last four weeks. But John doesn’t want to engage in any sort of competition with his dear pal. “Couldn’t be up against someone I love more, @teddysphotos x,” he replied with his own black-and-white Instagram photo of both artists laughing.

The two might be able to take over the tally together this upcoming holiday season, because Sheeran revealed that they’ll be presenting fans with a Christmas collaboration in December after John proposed the idea last Christmas. “He rung me on Christmas Day and he said, ‘”Step Into Christmas” is No. 6 on the charts, and I’m 74, and I’m still having f—ing chart hits, this is great! I want to do another Christmas song, will you do it with me?’” he recalled of their phone conversation.
