Elvie Shane rises to No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart (dated Oct. 23) to become the top emerging act in the U.S. for the first time, thanks to his breakthrough single “My Boy.”

The track hits No. 1 on Country Airplay and rises to No. 4 on Hot Country Songs with 31.8 million airplay audience impressions (up 24%), 6.6 million U.S. streams (up 20%) and 2,000 downloads sold (up nearly 1%), according to MRC Data.

“My Boy,” which also surges from No. 42 to No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, marks Shane’s first entry on any Billboard chart. It’s from the Caneyville, Ky., native’s debut LP, Backslider, due Oct. 29.

“This song was originally written from my perspective as a stepfather,” Shane says. “I feel so blessed knowing it is now so many other families’ song, as well. A big thank you to ‘my boy’ for the inspiration.”

Shane, who is signed to Wheelhouse, is the fourth act that has appeared on Billboard’s country charts to top Emerging Artists this year. He follows Niko Moon, who led for two weeks in February, Lainey Wilson and Billy Strings (each for a week in October).

Elsewhere on Emerging Artists, BADBADNOTGOOD debuts at No. 7 as its new LP Talk Memory starts at No. 3 on Jazz Albums with 5,000 equivalent album units. It’s the Toronto act’s third top five Jazz Albums entry and its first debut on any ranking in four years, after III hit No. 2 in May 2014 and IV led for a week in July 2016.

The Emerging Artists chart ranks the most popular developing artists of the week, using the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. (The Artist 100 lists the most popular acts, overall, each week.) However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard’s “Hot” song genre charts and/or consumption-based “Top” album genre rankings.
