Eddie Montgomery on Getting Real With First Solo Country Album: ‘The Good, Bad and Ugly — And the Party on the Weekend’

In 2017 Eddie Montgomery’s life and career unalterably changed when Troy Gentry, his longtime musical partner in Montgomery Gentry, died in a helicopter crash.

Four years later, Montgomery, who’s an ACM and CMA Award winner, Grand Ole Opry member, cancer survivor and self-professed bar fly is admirably soldiering on with his first solo album, Ain’t No Closing Me Down, which came out last week exclusively at Walmart via Average Joe’s Entertainment.

Produced by Noah Gordon and Shannon Houchins, the 12-song set features eight songs co-written by Montgomery. The title track is a rebellious country anthem taken directly from the Kentucky native’s pandemic playbook, while “Alive and Well,” finds Montgomery candidly singing about the loss of Gentry and two of his sons. The music veteran has survived more than his share of tragedy and his solo debut unflinchingly explores heartbreak, but doesn’t get mired in despair.

“It’s my heart and soul poured out,” Montgomery tells Billboard via Zoom. “With ‘Alive and Well,’ I’m talking about my two sons and T-Roy [his nickname for Gentry]. It was opening up my soul and it kind of helped me a little bit. I ain’t going to lie about it and that’s the stuff that I tried to write about — the good, bad, and ugly, and the party on the weekend.”

The title track was inspired by Montgomery transforming his garage into a gathering place during the pandemic. “They closed all the restaurants and bars down,” he says of COVID restrictions in his home state of Kentucky. “Of course, we’re bar flies. We’ve got to find that place. You can’t take that away from us… I’ve got a pretty good size garage, so I started to hang a few TVs, then a disco ball and an old dart board. When the restaurants all closed down, they were selling their stuff. I saw this big refrigerator and I was like, ‘Well, hell I’ll just go get it and put it in the garage too.’ We started grilling and people started hanging in there. We were watching sports on TV. That’s the way we live.”

Montgomery’s home backs up to a golf course, and soon he was feeding everyone from golfers to the mail carriers. “If a FedEx guy or mailman would come up, we’d fix them a hamburger or steak,” he says. “Whatever we were fixing at the time. It’s still going on. Eddie’s Garage is what it’s called. Somebody made me a big neon sign for it.”

Montgomery penned the title track with Chris Wallin and Ira Dean, who also collaborated with Montgomery on “Alive and Well.” “If anything good came out of COVID, it’s me sitting in that garage writing,” he says. “It took me a long time to figure out when I was going to do a solo project because a day don’t go by that I don’t think about T-Roy. I think through this whole thing he may have been there with me.”

When asked why he chose to carry on solo, Montgomery says it was something they had agreed on. “Me and T-Roy made a promise to each other over some Jim Beam quite a few years back,” he says. “We told each other if anything ever happened to one of us, we wanted the other to make sure the MG logo and Montgomery Gentry is always there. I made a promise and I’m going to keep that promise. So even though it’s a solo, it’s still me and T.”

Montgomery Gentry scored a number of hits, including such Billboard Country Songs No. 1s as “If You Ever Stop Loving Me,” “Lucky Man” and “Back When I Knew It All” in the first decade of the 2000s.

Montgomery takes great pride in the fact that their band, The Wild Bunch, plays on his solo record instead of the standard Nashville practice of using session musicians. “Me and T had been fighting for a long time to get them on there — because we thought they were that good. I told the label, ‘Let’s do three or four cuts, and if it don’t work, then we’ll trash it. I’ll pay for it and we’ll go on.’ They came in and they killed it… We’ve been touring together and have been through divorces and bus fires or whatever. That’s gives the CD maybe a little edge, because those guys know who we are.”

In addition to recording for the first time with his band, Montgomery has a couple other significant firsts on the album, including duetting with country legend Tanya Tucker on “Higher,” written by Jim “Moose” Brown, David Wade, Shane Grove and Erik Michael Westfall. “I’m just glad Tanya would sing with me. I can’t believe it,” he says, shaking his head with a big smile. “She’s an icon, and her voice is so unbelievably strong. I’d put her up against anybody that’s coming into town now — and I promise you she’ll smoke them. To get the chance to sing with an icon like that, that’s pretty awesome.”

He also wrote his first-ever love song, “She Just Loves Me.” “Of course, I wrote it about my smokin’ hot wife,” he says. “When I come home, I told her, ‘I wrote a song for you. I’ve got the demo on it, and I want you to listen to it.’ I said, ‘I can’t sing it right now’ — because there was no way I could have done it [without getting too emotional]. I wanted her to hear it first on the demo, just in case she thought it sucked. She got tore up and loved it, so I reckon that’s a good thing.”

Another personal song on the album is “My Son,” a song Montgomery co-wrote with Gordon that is featured on the soundtrack of the western Old Henry, starring Tim Blake Nelson and Trace Adkins. “I got to thinking about my sons, and me and Noah got to talking. The next thing I know, we had that song written,” Montgomery recalls. “I’ve got a bunch of boys and of course I lost a couple of them. [I was] just trying to think, ‘What do I tell my sons? And what did my old man tell me?’ So that’s how that come out. It means a lot to me that song does.”

Filming the video for “Alive and Well,” which also addresses the loss of his two sons, was understandably difficult. “If I get to thinking about that song too much when I’m singing it, too much emotion gets up in there, but it helped my heart and it helped my soul after I got it done.”

Though Montgomery co-wrote the bulk of the album, he also recorded some outside tunes, including the patriotic “Ain’t She Beautiful,” which was written by Chris Rafetto, Brendan Cooney and his nephew Walker Montgomery (Eddie’s brother John Michael Montgomery’s son). “I call it ‘The Flag Song.’ It just shows you, as young as [Walker] is, he loves this country that much. I feel like we let her down sometimes, but we’ve got the greatest country in the world.”

Montgomery pours a lot of life and emotion into every song on the album, matching his philosophy on living life to the fullest. “We can either lay down or we can go get it,” he says. “Life is very short and I’m going to live it by the second. That’s the way T-Roy did. That’s the way we grew up. If you aren’t living, then you probably don’t know much or you probably ain’t been hurt. You ain’t been nothing because you’ve been sitting still, but once you go out there and live life, sh*t is going to happen.”

Doja Cat Passes Drake for Most Rhythmic Airplay No. 1s of 2021

Doja Cat again pounces to the No. 1 rank on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart as “Need to Know” leads the list dated Nov. 6. The single advances from No. 3 thanks to a 17% boost in plays in the week ending Oct. 31 to become the week’s most-played song on U.S. monitored rhythmic radio stations, according to MRC Data.

“Need” becomes Doja Cat’s fifth No. 1 on Rhythmic Airplay and fourth of 2021, the year’s highest total among all acts. With the new champ, she passes Drake and his three chart-toppers on the year. Furthermore, Doja Cat is the first woman to land four Rhythmic Airplay No. 1s in a calendar year since Rihanna in 2012. That year, the latter reigned with “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris (which split its nine weeks in charge across 2011 and 2012), a featured role on Drake’s “Take Care” and her own singles “Where Have You Been” and “Diamonds.”

In terms of four new No. 1s in a calendar year, Rihanna, too, owns the last quartet. In 2010, she sent “Rude Boy” to the top slot in May, followed by a featured turn on Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” in July and posted back-to-back No. 1s with “Only Girl (in the World)” and “What’s My Name?,” featuring Drake, in December.

Back to the new quartet queen – here’s a full rundown of Doja Cat’s leaders on Rhythmic Airplay:

“Say So,” three weeks at No. 1, beginning April 18, 2020
“Best Friend,” Saweetie featuring Doja Cat, one week, April 10, 2021
“Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA, two weeks, June 26, 2021
“You Right,” with The Weeknd, four weeks, Aug. 28, 2021
“Need to Know,” one (to date), Nov. 6, 2021

Also, as “Need” reaches the top slot in its ninth week on the list, it ties “You Right” as the fastest climber of Doja Cat’s five champs.

“Need,” “Right” and “Kiss Me More” all appear on Doja Cat’s latest album, Planet Her, which debuted and has peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and logged three weeks at No. 1 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Elsewhere, “Need” rises to a new peak on Pop Airplay with a 10-8 ascent on the latest published chart through an 11% gain in weekly plays. Strength in the pop and rhythmic sectors helps the track climb 14-12 to a new high on the all-genre Radio Songs chart. There, it added 14% to 44.1 million in audience in the week ending Oct. 31.

Airplay gains likewise push the song into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, which factors radio airplay, song sales and streaming into its calculations. “Need” advances 11-9 there, giving Doja Cat her fourth career hit in the upper tier.

U2 explore the power of music on new track ‘Your Song Saved My Life’

U2 have shared a brand new song called ‘Your Song Saved My Life’ – you can listen to the track in full below.

READ MORE: SING – film review

The band previewed the new single earlier this week when they shared a snippet on their newly opened TikTok account.

Premiered this evening (November 3) by BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley, ‘Your Song Saved My Life’ is the first new music from U2 since 2019’s ‘Ahimsa’, which the band collaborated on with ‘Jai Ho’ composer AR Rahman.

Taken from the soundtrack for the upcoming animated sequel SING 2, the film will see U2 frontman Bono make his animated screen debut as reclusive rockstar lion Clay Calloway.

On the track, Bono explores the cathartic power of music. “You know your song saved my life / I don’t sing it just so I can get by/ Won’t you hear me when I tell you darlin’/ I sing it to survive,” he sings.

Your song saved my life/ The worst and the best days of my life/ I was broken now I’m open your love keeps me alive/ It keeps me alive.”

You can listen to the track below:

The soundtrack for SING 2 is set to be released on December 17 via Illumination, Universal Pictures and Republic Records.

U2’s discography is now available for TikTok users to soundtrack their posts with following the band’s arrival on the video-sharing platform. You can follow the band’s account here.

According to a press release, prior to the band joining TikTok, U2 had already seen huge success and demand on the platform, with the #U2 hashtag and related content receiving over 249million video views.

This month marks the 30th anniversary of U2’s seminal album ‘Achtung Baby’. To celebrate, the band will be unearthing archival footage from some of their performances and tours over the decades for TikTok users.

Meanwhile, U2 have said that they would have no problem with frontman Bono going solo if he ever decided to do so.

Speaking in a recent interview, the band’s bassist Adam Clayton insisted he and the rest of the band – also comprising guitarist The Edge and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. – would support Bono if he decided to do a solo record.

Watch IDLES’ video for abrasive new single ‘Car Crash’

IDLES have shared the video for their abrasive new single ‘Car Crash’, the latest track to be taken from their upcoming album ‘CRAWLER’.

The Bristol band will release their fourth album next week (November 12), just over a year since the release of its predecessor, 2020’s ‘Ultra Mono’.

READ MORE: IDLES: Don’t Go Gentle review: a touching portrait of fandom done right

The ‘Car Crash’ video features clips of car crashes from old films, edited together as one. It was created by Matthew Cusick and edited by the band’s guitarist Lee Kiernan. Cusick has been compiling car chase scenes from American films throughout the 20th century since 2001, and said his project now has “what it was always missing… a killer soundtrack”.

The song itself, meanwhile, was inspired by IDLES frontman Joe Talbot’s own near-death experience in a car accident. “It’s the horrific, comedown hangover – waking up in the morning and realising the smashes, like, what the fuck am I doing with my life?” he explained in a press release.

Mark Bowen, IDLES guitarist and co-producer on the record, added: “We wanted it to be as violent as possible to reflect that event. We recorded the drums beforehand and put them on a vinyl acetate. Whenever you replay an acetate, because it is kind of like a liquid, it degrades every time.

“It touches on things being transient and momentary — even a single drum hit. It’s like a memory, when the moment has passed and you deal with the repercussions over and over again, and they morph and change into something else.”

The new track follows a mysterious teaser that was shared by the band last week (October 27), which featured a phone number. When the number was dialled, it played what sounded like a car driving and weird, warped screams. After a few minutes, the call automatically hung up.

IDLES will head out on a sold-out UK and Ireland tour next year, which features four consecutive nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. Before that, Talbot will take part in a series of Q&A shows with Creation Records’ Alan McGee in December.

Official Images Of The adidas Trae Young 1 “Peach Tree”

Trae Young might still not be welcomed in New York City, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to expand his adidas Trae Young 1 roster. For its next ensemble, the BOOST-cushioned basketball sneaker has drawn inspiration from peach trees commonly found throughout Georgia.

A Texas-native, Young has ensured to celebrate the city in which he currently plays, with the newly-surfaced “Acid Orange/Team Green” colorway continuing the trend of immortalizing Atlanta. The mesh upper and most of the foam and rubber sole unit indulge in a faint citrus tone, while lush “Team Green” animates pull tabs at the tongue and spine. A peach graphic on the sock-liner confirms the sneaker’s inspiration, as it dons both titular colors. BOOST-cushioning exposed across the heel deliver stark white contrast, allowing the aforementioned hues to revel that much more in the spotlight.

Enjoy official images of the pair here below, and expect an adidas.com launch on November 19th.

Chartbreaker: Inside CKay’s Global Success With a Years-Old Hit

In 2019, a then-rising Nigerian artist CKay sent the sultry, slow-tempo “Love Nwantiti (ah ah ah)” to his label Chocolate City Music. “To be honest… it was overlooked,” he says. “No one took it seriously because it wasn’t a fast song.”

Two years later — and thanks to a viral TikTok challenge, plus five more versions, including an acoustic rendition and sped-up offerings — the song became CKay’s first Billboard Hot 100 hit, climbing into the top 40 on that chart and also making it all the way to No. 2 on Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. and Global 200 tallies. The 26-year-old CKay, born Chukwuka Ekweani, describes it as “my own spin on Afrobeats,” saying he finds particular joy in creating what he calls emo Afrobeats.

“Emo Afrobeats is a way to express myself, my emotions and my sound and still have a groove to it,” he explains. “Plus I’m a cancer, so my energy is basically emotions.”

CKay says he was in love while making the record — the title translated from his native Igbo language means “small love” — which came about while he was making beats and freestyling in his living room. “[The humming] was supposed to be backing vocals for the chorus,” he says, “but the record sounded perfect as it was.” He then sent it to a young producer from Lagos named Tempoe, who he says added extra details on the drums, completing the song seven months before it was released.

At first, nothing happened. But with the help of his manager Ogbolu Favour, who first heard CKay’s music in 2016, the artist was upstreamed in November 2020 to Warner Music South Africa, with Chocolate City Music licensing “Love Nwantiti” to the major (his U.S. contract is with Atlantic).  “It’s great to be in an environment working with people who understand your vision and are ready to make it happen,” CKay says of his new label homes. “My dream was always to make music [where] I wouldn’t have to change my sound and it would touch the whole world, so it’s amazing to be doing that right now.”

With the help of his manager Ogbolu Favour, who first heard CKay’s music in 2016, the artist signed a new label deal with Warner Music South Africa in November 2020 — his U.S. contract is with Atlantic. Chocolate City Music then licensed “Love Nwantiti” to Warner.

He released his major label debut EP Boyfriend this February, but this summer, it was “Love Nwantiti” — off his 2019 debut EP CKay the First — that was putting CKay on the map. By this September, the song had hit No. 1 on Shazam’s Global 200 chart. “Social media definitely played a role — and it wasn’t only TikTok. It was also Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. The world discovered it one person at a time.” (“Love Nwantiti” has now collected 97.4 million on-demand streams in the U.S. alone, according to MRC Data.)

Meanwhile, that discovery was happening at the same time another Nigerian artist was making a major splash on the Hot 100. This summer, Wizkid’s “Essence” (featuring Tems) took off, followed by a remix that added Justin Bieber and helped the song peak at No. 9 on the chart last month, making it the first Hot 100 top 10 hit to include Nigeria’s Yoruba language.

Favour says Warner Music South Africa in particular was instrumental in enforcing a global rollout plan for the revived “Love Nwantiti”: “When it was licensed from Chocolate City Music, the Warner team wanted to release different products of the song, so we had different remixes in different regions. We had the North African remix, East African remix, South African, Spanish and French [versions] featuring different people that speak different languages from different parts of the world. Afrobeats gave the song a wider reach and with that step, the song had wings.”

CKay — who says he would love to collaborate with R&B artists like SZA, Summer Walker and Chris Brown, as well as pop stars like Chris Martin and Billie Eilish — hopes to release his debut album next year, teasing much more music on the way. “My album is going to be my best work yet,” he asserts, “because I’m going to put my whole soul and essence into it.”

Favour also believes the international success of “Love Nwantiti” is just the beginning for CKay: “I see [him] as an African global star.”

A version of this story will appear in the November 20, 2021 issue of Billboard.

Travis Scott Gifts Kylie Jenner & Daughter Stormi Matching Diamond Rings

Travis Scott is spoiling the two most important women in his life: girlfriend Kylie Jenner and their 3-year-old daughter Stormi Webster. On Tuesday, Jenner took to Instagram to share that the “Highest in the Room” rapper had surprised his best ladies with diamond rings — one for Kylie’s pointer finger and a much smaller and daintier version of Kylie’s ring for Stormi.

Jenner posted a picture of her and her daughter’s matching bling, captioning the post “daddy got us matching rings” along with a white heart and stormy cloud emoji. Jenner’s sister Khloé Kardashian commented on the post in disbelief, writing, “Daaaaammmmnnnnnnnnn” in a first comment and “No he did not!!!!!!!!!!!!” in a second.

Jenner is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child. The beauty mogul announced the news back in September with an emotional video of her showing the rapper her positive pregnancy test, going to the doctor with their daughter Stormi for an ultrasound, and telling Kardashian-Jenner matriarch Kris that she’ll be having baby number two with some help from their little girl. “What is it, are you pregnant?” Jenner’s mother asked her in the video.”Stormi, we’re going to have a baby,” she added, after opening an envelope with the ultrasound photos. “This is one of the happiest days of my life.”

Scott is gearing up for the third installment of his Astroworld Festival, which is set to take place in Houston over the coming weekend starting on Friday, Nov. 5. Scott is headlining the event, with Tame Impala, SZA, Earth, Wind &  Fire and more also set to perform.

DaBaby Announces First Tour Since Onstage Homophobic Comments

After making egregious comments against the LGTBQ community at July’s Rolling Loud Miami Festival, DaBaby announced a new tour in collaboration with Rolling Loud titled the Live Show Killa Tour on Tuesday (Nov. 2).

“The show you thought you’d never see again,” Baby wrote on Instagram. “Rolling Loud presents @dababy. Live Show Killa Tour.” Baby recently performed at Rolling Loud New York as 50 Cent’s surprise guest last week at Citi Field. There, he performed hits such as “Masterpiece,” “Suge” and “Rockstar.”

During his performance at Rolling Loud Miami 2021, DaBaby said from the stage: “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up.” He added: “Fellas, if you ain’t sucking d–k in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up!”

Shortly after his diatribe against the LGBTQ community, Baby was dropped from several festival lineups, including Governors Ball and Lollapalooza. Though he issued several apologies via social media, his attempts proved futile as fans felt he lacked remorse for his remarks.

In August, DaBaby had a meeting with nine leaders of various HIV organizations and “discussed HIV history and education, as well as the groups’ work in Black, LGBTQ, and faith communities.” The leaders signed an open letter acknowledging his participation in the conversation.

Check out the dates for DaBaby’s upcoming tour, which will kick off this month in Chicago before ending next February in Los Angeles.
