Streaming Is Reliable Revenue, So What’s Next for Warner Music and Other Labels?

Streaming, record label’s biggest source of revenue, is becoming predictable. Revenue consistently grows by double digit percentages from year to year: Spotify’s revenue was up 26.6% in the third quarter, while streaming at Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment jumped 23.8% and 45%, respectively, in the quarter ending Sept. 30. Streaming companies constantly add bells and whistles, and they experiment with plans and pricing, but the basic value proposition has changed little in a decade.

Warner Music Group, too, posted strong gains in the quarter ending Sept. 30, the company announced Monday (Nov. 15). In the recorded music segment, streaming revenue rose 23.7% to $2.97 billion in the fiscal year and accounted for 65.4% of recorded music revenue and 56.1% for the entire company, up from 53.8% the previous year. Company-wide quarterly revenue grew 22.2% to $1.38 billion and full-year revenue improved 18.8% to $5.3 billion.

Music companies are thrilled their income is rising — with regularity — after more than a decade of trench warfare battling piracy and declining CD sales. And, at this point, it’s worth considering what comes next.

In WMG’s earnings call on Monday, a word repeatedly came up when analysts probed for insights about the opportunities that await: metaverse. Thank Mark Zuckerberg for that. The term gained widespread attention since Facebook announced its name change its to Meta on Oct. 28 and detailed its plan to create a metaverse, a combination of augmented and virtual reality, where people interact with other users’ avatars in simulated worlds. Other tech titans share Facebook’s vision. Microsoft is also working on a metaverse for its Office products and Xbox gaming platform. Apple is reportedly working on a augmented reality glasses and “mixed reality,” a combination of AR and VR.

WMG already has a metaverse play through a January investment in Roblox, a platform that hosts user-generated games. WMG artist Twenty One Pilots showed Roblox’s potential in September by kicking off a really-word tour with a virtual concert that allowed viewers to choose songs in real time. Other labels and artists are getting in too: Sony Music Entertainment struck a strategic partnership with Roblox in July that will put its artists in front of Roblox’s more than 42 million active daily users. Fortnite — arguably a social media platform rather than a metaverse — is best known in the music business for its groundbreaking performances by Marshmello and Travis Scott that attracted 10 million and 12 million viewers, respectively.

The metaverse picks up where streaming leaves off. WMG CEO Stephen Cooper described the difference between traditional streaming and the metaverse in terms of interactivity. With traditional streaming, labels and digital service providers push music to listeners, and listeners pull the music they want to hear. That’s a big change in how streaming was framed just a few years ago. For nearly 20 years, music streaming was called “interactive” because on-demand music represented a fundamental change from one-time vinyl album, CD or download purchases. In fact, there is a legal distinction here: interactive means the listener has a “lean in,” on-demand experience with unlimited song selection. Non-interactive services let listeners “lean back” by limiting the amount of control they have over the music played. For now. this nomenclature works, but it’s fast becoming outdated.

The metaverse is the interactive experience that has “interconnectivity between content, between people, between people and content, between communities [and] interaction between adjacent communities,” said Cooper. “It is bringing music and our artists to those environments, to build and enhance not only the interconnectivity of music to people, but our artists to people [and] our artists to [other] artists. And it just creates so many possibilities for the convergence of content, artists, fandom and distribution, that I think it will take music, and music’s ability to really be the one, true global language, to an entirely different level.”

At least that’s the plan. Today, the metaverse is a promising promotional opportunity without meaningful revenue. Five years from now, it may approach revenue from a current slate growing segments. Revenues from gaming, social and fitness, for example, are growing in importance, although their contribution to WMG’s income statement remained unchanged from the previous earnings call at $235 million on an annualized basis. Still, WMG believes that these platforms cannot meet users’ needs without licensed music. “I don’t see any reason why these models — whether it be social, gaming, fitness or other areas — aren’t going to continue to emerge,” said CEO Stephen Cooper. “I personally couldn’t imagine Peloton without music, or a TikTok without music.”

Not that streaming revenue can be taken for granted, especially when advertising revenue growth requires brand spending to remain stable as COVID-19 surges again around the world. And a healthy streaming market demands that labels release music that excites listeners. Streaming services must do their part, too, in drawing consumers to their platforms and turning new releases into major events (as seen with Adele’s latest release). What’s more, the amount of revenue that streaming services share with rights holders is in flux.

But for the most part, the music streaming business model is set for the foreseeable future. Now innovation and investment in audio streaming comes from podcasts, as evidenced by the hundreds of millions of dollars spent by Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, SiriusXM and other major companies on original content and licensing popular shows. Audiobooks are gaining in important, too — Spotify announced on Nov. 11 it plans to acquire Findaway, a platform for established publishers and self-service authors, to better compete with Amazon’s Audible.com. In China, Tencent Music Entertainment acquired Lazy Audio, a producer of audiobooks and podcasts, in January for $417 million.

Where else does Warner look for growth? Good old acquisitions. Cooper continued his ongoing message about WMG’s approach to catalogs in the face of rising multiples amidst a growing number of competitors. “We’re certainly not going to be one of the lemmings going over a cliff by spending unwisely and thinking that without the organization and expertise [that] these assets are going to grow through some mystical and magical formulation,” said Cooper.

Which Album Should Taylor Swift Re-Record Next? Vote!

Two down, four to go. On Friday, Taylor Swift released Red (Taylor’s Version), a re-recording of her beloved 2012 album, which followed her very first re-recorded album, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), back in April. But which album should come next?

Swift vowed to re-record her first six albums after her Big Machine record label, and therefore her master recordings, were sold to Scooter Braun in June 2019. Now she’s two-sixths of the way through the ambitious undertaking, with four albums left to go.

In chronological order, she has her 2006 self-titled album, which includes debut single “Tim McGraw” as well as “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Our Song” and “Picture to Burn.” Then there’s 2010’s Speak Now, with “Mine,” “Back to December,” “Mean” and “The Story of Us.”

Next up was 2014’s 1989, Swift’s self-proclaimed first pop album, which features “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” “Style” and “Bad Blood.” And finally, there’s Reputation, Swift’s final album for Big Machine in 2017, which includes “Look What You Made Me Do,” “…Ready for It” (featuring Ed Sheeran and Future) and “Delicate.”

So there’s still a lot of ground left to cover. Which project will be next? Swifties have been picking up clues that 1989 is on deck, though they also thought the 2014 album was going to be next ahead of the announcement of Red (Taylor’s Version), so it remains to be seen.

Travis Scott’s Latest Nike Shoe Launch Postponed ‘Out of Respect’ After Astroworld Tragedy

Following 10 deaths and more than 300 injuries at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival in Houston on Nov. 5 due to a fatal crowd surge, the release of the rapper’s latest Nike collaboration has been delayed.

On Monday (Nov. 15), Nike’s SNKRS app issued a statement, saying, “Out of respect for everyone impacted by the tragic events at the Astroworld Festival, we are postponing the launch of the Air Max 1 x Cactus Jack.” Though the original release date for the footwear collection is unclear, the shoes were due out by early 2022, according to Sneaker News.

The postponement comes after a 10th victim was pronounced dead Sunday after attending Astroworld. Nine-year-old Ezra Blount died after he was reportedly trampled during the concert. He had gone with his dad and was placed in a medically induced coma after sustaining internal injuries to his vital organs.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner confirmed Blount’s tragic death in a post he shared Sunday (Nov. 14), tweeting, “I am saddened to learn of Ezra’s death this evening. Our city tonight prays for his mom, dad, grandparents, other family members and classmates at this time. They will need all of our support in the months and years to come. May God give them strength. RIP Ezra.”

The late child’s grandfather, Bernon Blount, told The Associated Press of the incident, “They were expecting to come and have a good time with each other, bond as father and son, and it turned into a tragic event because of the negligence of others.”

Following the fatalities, a slew of lawsuits have been filed against Scott, fellow rapper Drake (who performed during Scott’s headlining set), Live Nation, and Austin-based concert promoter ScoreMore.

As of last Thursday, at least 79 cases had been filed in Houston court, accusing event organizers of failing to implement adequate crowd-control measures or staffing failures and more.

The rapper has previously collaborated with Nike on limited Air Force 1 releases, including a Cactus Jack shoe that came out in October 2019. All of his shoes have sold out upon release.

Watch The Weeknd & Post Malone Duel to the Death in Bloody ‘One Right Now’ Music Video

Post Malone and The Weeknd deliver nothing short of a bloodbath in the new music video for their first joint track “One Right Now,” which premiered Monday (Nov. 15) and isn’t for the faint of heart.

The visual kicks off with The Weeknd casually walking into a building before opening fire on a series of men to get revenge on his cheating ex-girlfriend. “Said you love me, but I don’t care/ That I broke my hand on the same wall/ That you told me that he f—-d you on,” he sings in the chorus.

With his arm in a cast, the singer continues his shooting spree as he moves through the space, even unleashing a grenade at one point.

Soon after, Malone chimes in, saying, “Said you wanna have my babies, I f—ed you so good you should pay me/ Don’t call me ‘baby’ when you did me so wrong.”

Post Malone then picks up a rifle of his own and proceeds to shoot several Weeknd doppelgangers along his path, until he meets his archnemesis face to face.

Spoiler alert: In the end, The Weeknd and Malone fatally shoot each other simultaneously.

In addition to the new music video, Malone released a limited-edition “One Right Now” merchandise collection, available for purchase online.

Universal Music Sues Over Launch of ‘Republic’ Music Investment Platform

Universal Music Group, the owner of Republic Records, is suing an investment platform called Republic for trademark infringement over a recent expansion into music royalty streams.

In a case filed Friday in Manhattan federal court, UMG claimed the use of the Republic name on the new music-focused service, launched this earlier month, is already causing the members of the music industry to mistakenly think its connected to the existing Republic Records.

“The artists, labels, managers, agents, and fans who currently know of plaintiff’s Republic label would be presented with two different companies offering identical services under identical names in the same industry,” attorneys for the music giant wrote in the lawsuit. “Confusion is inevitable.”

Formally named OpenDeal Inc., Republic is a crowdfunding platform that lets users buy into startups, cryptocurrency projects and other investments. In October, the company announced it would start allowing users to invest in music royalties, calling itself the first to “bring music investing to the masses.”

Using NFT (non-fungible token) technology, Republic’s new music service allows users to buy a small stake in future royalty streams from a particular song or album. The debut project saw rapper Lil Pump sell a portion of the earnings from his single “Mona Lisa,” featuring Soulja Boy and produced by Jimmy Duval.

Republic has billed such offerings as way for artists to “have more control over their art” by directly funding their own productions, and for fans to earn money by investing in the success of their favorite musicians. It also advertises that investors get special perks, like access to tickets, merch and events.

Republic Records, meanwhile, was founded as an independent in 1995 and today operates as one of UMG’s top imprints, home to Ariana Grande, Drake, Post Malone and many other major artists. Most notably, Taylor Swift signed to Republic when she made the jump to UMG in 2018.

In Friday’s lawsuit, UMG said Republic’s use of its name on a music-related service violated U.S. trademark law, which prohibits the use of similar branding on overlapping goods and services. UMG said the use such a prominent name in the music industry, on a platform that offers many services “that record labels typically offer,” was precisely such an illegal overlap.

“Plaintiff’s Republic Records label has grown into one of the most successful and renowned record labels in the world,” UMG’s attorneys wrote. “Plaintiff brings this action to stop defendant’s wanton effort to usurp plaintiff’s Republic name and trademarks for itself in connection with new music-related services that defendant recently launched.”

Trademark rights are tightly limited to certain types of commercial offerings, and UMG’s lawsuit stressed that it did not oppose Republic’s use of the name on its existing investment products, only on music-related offerings.

A spokeswoman for Republic told Billboard on Monday (Nov. 15) that the company “does not comment on ongoing litigation and looks forward to working with UMG’s counsel to resolve the matter amicably.”

UMG is repped in the lawsuit by David Donahue, Jason D. Jones and Daniel M. Nuzzaci of the law firm Fross Zelnick Lehrman & Zissu PC.

Matt Young Named President of UMG’s Bravado Merch Company

Matt Young has been appointed president of Universal Music Group’s merchandise company Bravado, it was announced Monday (Nov. 15). He joins UMG from Warner Music Group, where he worked at Warner Music Artist Services — most recently as president — for nearly 14 years before departing the company last month.

Young will be based out of Bravado’s New York offices, where he’ll report to global e-commerce and business development president Richelle Parham, who complimented Young in a statement for his “leadership and vision. She added that Young “will be a critical element of the ecosystem we have built to deliver unparalleled consumer-driven e-commerce, as well as ensure our artists are reaching their fans and new audiences around the world with exciting products and experiences.”

In his work at WMG, Young was a leading force in developing consumer engagement, marketing execution and revenue generation for the company’s artists. He brings over 20 years of industry experience in brand-building and artist services to UMG, with a focus on merchandising, e-commerce, retail, consumer product licensing, ticketing and customer relationship management.

Prior to WMG Young worked at Bandmerch, where he served as GM of the New York office and as head of retail and A&R. Before that, he served in roles at Blue Grape Merchandising and indie labels Bush League Records and Earache Records.

“I’m stoked to lead Bravado at this pivotal time and to build on the company’s reputation as the leader in our industry,” said Young in a statement. “Bravado is known for creating innovative new opportunities for artists to meaningfully connect with their fans, both directly, on tour and through some of the most prominent retailers in the world. With Richelle and her team, Bravado will work closely with our roster of artists, as well as UMG’s labels, territories and operating companies to take UMG’s direct-to-consumer and merchandise strategy to an even greater level of success.”

Placebo on new album ‘Never Let Me Go’: “I hope I’ve been courageous”

Placebo have spoken about their upcoming eighth album ‘Never Let Me Go’ in a new interview, with vocalist Brian Molko hoping he’s been “courageous” with it.

READ MORE: Soundtrack Of My Life: Placebo’s Brian Molko

Placebo announced ‘Never Let Me Go’ earlier this month, with the followup to 2013’s ‘Loud Like Love’ being released March 25 2022.

In a new interview with The Guardian, it’s revealed that ‘Never Let Me Go’ started life while the band were doing a 20th anniversary tour for their 1996 self-titled debut album.

For Molko, that run felt like “an extremely commercial exercise. Having to go back and play songs which felt quite sophomoric for me at first made me want to do something that really, really broke with all of my safety nets.”

The band have already detailed how they wrote the album “backwards”. Talking about this new way of working, Molko said: “If you decide to do everything in a way that you don’t actually know how to do, you’ll fall into a series of accidents which can stimulate you or disgust you. That surprise is what I live for.”

According to the interview, ‘Never Let Me Go’ deals with climate change, extreme inequality and a society under constant surveillance. Not that Molko has the answers. “For me, it’s about not existing in the problem and trying to live in the solution. I wanted to express something visceral, something very human. I just hope that other people will understand it and that it will move them,” he said.

“I hope that I’ve been somewhat courageous with this record so that it might inspire courage in others. It might help them stand up for what they believe in. That’s all. That’s what music did for me,” he added.

In September, Placebo released ‘Beautiful James’, their first song in five years which was followed up by ‘Surrounded By Spies’ earlier this month, alongside details of a tour of UK and Ireland.

The run will take place in November and December of 2022 and features two shows at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.

Rina Sawayama on album two: “I just want to write really big songs”

Rina Sawayama has spoken about her second album, saying how she just wants “to write really big songs”

READ MORE: Rina Sawayama – ‘SAWAYAMA’ review: deeply personal self-portrait lays waste to genre constraints

In a new interview with Music Week, Sawayama has admitted she’s still trying to finish writing the followup to her 2020 self-titled debut but she’s working with “with some incredible people” including producers Paul Epworth and Stuart Price.

“Most of the songs were started with me and Clarence Clarity, so it’s still got that core that ‘Sawayama’ had. I just want to write really big songs, songs that make me feel a certain way,” said Sawayama.

“All these newcomers have been incredible. So much of it was written during lockdown on Zoom sessions, which I hated. But somehow they yielded good songs. It will be out next year, hopefully.” In September, Sawayama told a fan she hoped the record would be out “next year, late summer”.

Rina Sawayama is currently touring the UK. At a gig in Glasgow, she aired new song ‘Catch Me In The Air’ and explained how her second album is “ even more personal” than her debut.

Speaking to NME about the new album in May, Sawayama explained how she’s “not locking herself into one genre”.

“I’ve been listening to a lot of Garbage, prog rock, grunge, a lot early ’00s Britpop, ‘Sound Of The Underground’ by Girls Aloud, a lot of the Xenomania stuff, and even ’90s rave as well. Plus garage and stadium rock – everything!”

In a review of her show in Manchester, NME said: “The meticulous choreography and altered arrangements of her songs result in a dazzling, all-encompassing pop assault on the senses, the sort which usually takes place on far larger stages than these.”

Rina Sawayama is also expected to appear on Charli XCX’s upcoming fifth album ‘Crash

Noah NY Channels Their Love Of Running With Two New adidas Silhouettes

Noah NY has long-fostered a healthy relationship with adidas, often iterating on older classics for each instance of collaboration. But here, the label crafts two original silhouettes — the Vintage Runner and Lab Race — both of which are made simple just as they should be.

“After years of running, we’ve come to a handful of conclusions,” the brand states. One of the biggest being that whatever we go for a run in has to be simple and not overly technical. For our Fall ’21 Adidas Originals collaboration we set out for a functional, yet wearable collection that blurs the line between performance and lifestyle.”

The Lab Race, as its namesake implies, is a far more experimental design. Mesh is used heavily throughout the upper, amplifying breathability in between slim cut suede overlays. Leather stripes, then, dress the side, creating leading lines towards the featherweight Lightstrike sole. This model comes in both a brown-dominant colorway as well as a much more vibrant arrangement of white, yellow, and green.

In contrast, the Vintage Runner offers a more familiar feeling. It borrows directly from a track spike shoe released in the 1980s, which is readable in the classic paneling and use of synthetic as well as suede materials. A brown color scheme makes a return here, accompanied by a green-dressed, yellow-accented sidekick.

Enjoy a look at the entire collection below. The footwear and apparel are currently scheduled to hit the NoahNY.com on November 18th.
