Stray Kids’ last release was their second studio album ‘NOEASY’ in August, featuring lead single ‘Thunderous’. That record marked the group’s first comeback since being crowned the winners of the Mnet reality TV competition Kingdom: Legendary War, and also includes the return of member Hyunjin following a lengthy hiatus.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone India, the group shared why they wanted to incorporate traditional Korean instruments into ‘Thunderous’. “We wanted to express how grand our traditional musical sounds can be, as well as the possibilities of combining these sounds with K-pop,” Changbin said.

Members Bang Chan and Felix also spoke to Rolling Stone Australia about their initial move to South Korea, with the former opening up about how he would  “take care” of Felix when he first started trainee life and their friendship.

Kanye West apologises to Soulja Boy after dropping him from ‘DONDA’

Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has apologised to Soulja Boy after dropping the rapper’s verse from his latest album, ‘DONDA’.

READ MORE: Kanye West – ‘DONDA’ review: some gems among lots – and lots – of filler

‘DONDA’ features a smorgasbord of artists, including JAY-ZTravis ScottThe WeekndLil BabyKid CudiPusha T and then some, but Soulja Boy didn’t make the final cut once the album was finally released in late August.

Shortly after the album’s release, Soulja gave an interview where he called Ye a “coward”.

“You know for a fact that Kanye’s not going to let nobody release his album without his permission,” he said to TMZ, “you know, just say you fucked up and left [me] off the album.”

In his recent appearance on Revolt‘s Drink Champs podcast, Ye said that the reason he left Soulja’s verse off the final cut was because his verse was “trash”.

An incensed Soulja responded on a livestream, saying that, despite not having listened to ‘DONDA’ himself, the album was “trash”.

“Just ’cause it’s your album don’t mean you get to pick what’s hard,” he said. “Put it out and let the people decide… That shit was trash. I ain’t even heard the album yet. All my n***as said your shit was trash.”

Yesterday (November 10), in a now-deleted Instagram post, Ye extended an olive branch to Soulja via text message, saying “Love you bro. I should have told you I wasn’t gonna use the verse.”

Soulja appeared to accept Ye’s apology, replying “Love you too bro. That’s all I wanted.”

For what it’s worth, even when Soulja first expressed disappointment in Ye, he said that he’d still be open to working together in the future.

“As far as it comes to music man I’m always open to create like it ain’t like, ‘Oh I ain’t gonna never work with Kanye again’, you know what I’m saying?” he told TMZ.

The beef with Soulja isn’t the only one Ye put to rest this week, as he reached out to Drake to end their feud by joining him on stage at a Los Angeles show in December.

Ye said the collaboration would in order to bring awareness to the cause of freeing incarcerated man Larry Hoover, and Hoover’s son has urged Drake to accept.

Security Staffing at Travis Scott’s Astroworld Was Unclear, Says Houston Police Chief

Organizers of the Astroworld music festival have not provided investigators with clear records about private security personnel working the grounds when a massive crowd surge during headliner Travis Scott’s set led to at least eight deaths, Houston’s police chief said Wednesday.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner also forcefully defended his department’s ability to handle the criminal investigation on its own, rejected calls for an outside probe and said he did not have a close relationship with the megastar rapper, who is from Houston and founded the sold-out festival that drew 50,000 fans.

Finner said he expressed safety concerns to Scott before the Friday night show but did not go into detail. He said he has only ever spoken with Scott twice.

“I had no reason to believe that it wasn’t going to be safe,” Finner said. “But I’m the kind of chief that I meet with people whenever I can, and that includes him. We had a very respectful, few minute conversation on my concerns.”

Scott played about an hour of his set before the concert ended. Finner said the decision over when to end a show early is up to the performer and the production company.

“When you say authority and ability to end the show, we don’t hold the plug. But it’s always in the plan, it’s always a discussion of how that would happen,” he said. “We had those discussions with the promoters.”

Speaking to reporters for just the second time since the tragedy, Finner was defensive at times and criticized what he described as rumors and speculation surrounding what happened. He offered few new details and refused to go into timelines about the investigation, which he said could take weeks or months.

About 530 Houston police officers worked the festival, more than twice as many as when the festival was last held in 2019, according to Finner. He said Live Nation, the promoter of the event, and other organizers had not provided “good records” about the number of private security personnel working inside.

It was Live Nation’s role to secure two mosh pits directly in front of the stage where Scott performed, Finner said.

But he repeatedly cautioned that the investigation was still in the early stages and said he would not “cast blame on any organization.” He also said there was no evidence that a security guard near the crowd had unknowingly received an injection during the show, despite reports.

At least two concertgoers remained in critical condition Wednesday. Officials have not disclosed details about the fans who have been hospitalized since Friday, but the family of a 9-year-old boy who attended the concert with his father has said the child was in a medically induced coma after sustaining injuries to his heart, lungs and brain.

“How did this happen? That is a question that remains on all of our minds,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said earlier Wednesday. “How did this happen? Where were the missteps? Where were the failures? Where were the gaps? We owe it to the family members, all of those who attended and quite frankly the city as a whole, to the first responders, all of them, how did this happen?”

Turner read the names of the eight people who died before pausing a city council meeting for a moment of silence. The victims were between the ages of 14 and 27 and came from Texas, Illinois and Washington state, according to authorities.

The festival grounds and stage where Scott performed have yet to be disassembled as authorities and attorneys representing the injured and their families continued combing the area. The festival was held on a parking lot that is part of NRG Park, a complex consisting of stadiums, an arena and a convention center.

Bernon Blount said his son and 9-year-old grandson, Ezra, attended the festival together but became separated during the crowd surge. He said Tuesday that the child was in a medically induced coma at a Houston hospital.

“I’m angry because it’s disrupted our family, and this could have been avoided if people in positions of power had done the right thing,” Blount said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday announced the formation of a task force to develop concert safety recommendations, which he said would “ensure that the tragedy that occurred at the Astroworld Festival never happens again.”

Emergency plans for the Astroworld music festival did not include protocols for dangerous crowd surges like the one that unfolded during the rush to see Scott, who founded the festival. More than 20 lawsuits have been filed, accusing organizers of failing to implement simple crowd-control measures or staff properly. Those being sued include Scott, Live Nation, and rapper Drake, who performed with Scott.

Houston police and fire departments have said they reviewed and approved safety plans. But the union head of the Houston Fire Department pushed back Tuesday, saying firefighters did not have a presence inside the festival and were not given radios to communicate directly with organizers.

Experts say crowd surge deaths happen because people are packed into a space so tightly that they can’t get enough oxygen. It’s not usually because they’re being trampled.

Hwasa of MAMAMOO has officially unveiled details for her forthcoming solo single album ‘Guilty Pleasure’.

The vocalist took to the group’s official social media on November 11 at midnight KST to announce that she would be making her highly anticipated solo return on November 24 at 6pm KST with a single album titled ‘Guilty Pleasure’.

The announcement was made just a day after Hwasa dropped a cryptic “come back trailer” on November 10 via the group’s YouTube channel, hinting at a potentially intense concept for ‘Guilty Pleasure’.

The forthcoming record follows her hit first mini-album ‘María’, which dropped over a year ago in June. That project featured a lead single of the same name, as well as her debut 2019 solo single ‘Twit’. ‘Guilty Pleasure’ will also be Hwasa’s first solo release since she renewed her exclusive contract with RBW Entertainment earlier this year.

Hwasa’s solo comeback was first confirmed by the label back in September, where it had confirmed that she was still working on new material at the time. “But the exact timing of the release has not been decided, and we will share an announcement in the future once it is decided on,” it said at the time.

Meanwhile, MAMAMOO made their return in September with the single ‘mumumumuch’, from their Greatest Hits album ‘I Say MAMAMOO: The Best’. The 23-track record also included “2021” versions of the quartet’s hits such as ‘I Miss You’, ‘Piano Man’, ‘Decalcomanie’ and more, all of which had been re-recorded.

November 30 will also be exactly one year after Kai made his solo debut in 2020 with his first mini-album ‘KAI (开)’. That record featured the title track ‘Mmmh’, which peaked at NUmber 26 on the Gaon Digital Chart, and five other B-side tracks.

His forthcoming comeback was first confirmed by his label SM Entertainment last month, after South Korean news site SPOTV News reported on October 26 that the singer had been preparing for a “solo album” and is expected to return sometime in “late November”.

Kai is set to star in the upcoming Netflix series New World, alongside SUPER JUNIOR‘s Heechul, Lee Seung-gi, Park Na-rae, Eun Ji-won and Jo Bo-ah.

Meanwhile, EXO’s most recent music release was their June ‘Don’t Fight The Feeling’ special album, which featured a title track of the same name. Meanwhile D.O made his long-awaited solo debut in July this year.

Kai is also part of SM Entertainment supergroup SuperM, alongside fellow EXO member Baekhyun, NCT‘s Mark, Taeyong, Ten and Lucas, as well as SHINee singer Taemin. The group’s most recent single was ‘We DO’, which dropped in April.

Toro y Moi to donate Astroworld profits to victim’s families

Toro y Moi has promised to donate the entirety of his fees and any profit he makes from playing Travis Scott‘s Astroworld to the families of those who died at the event.

Eight people, ranging in age from 14 to 27, died as a result of a crowd crush that occurred during Scott’s headlining set at the Houston festival on November 5 that also left hundreds injured.

In a lengthy statement posted on Instagram, Toro y Moi – real name Chaz Bear – said that he sends his “condolences to the families of those who were killed at AstroWorld last
week.

“The loss of life at a concert is unbelievably sad and discouraging as an entertainer. It’s taken me a few days to process and understand what all has happened. To show support, my business/management teams, my band and crew, and I are all donating our entire fees and any profit to the families of the victims from the event.”

He also encouraged other artists on the lineup, which included SZA, Yves Tumor and Lil Baby, to do the same as “profiting from this event feels completely off.”

“We have always promoted a positive, safe space for people to express and have fun,” he continued. “I promise to prioritize our fans’ safety throughout the show. All I ask all of my fans, venue staff and security is that if you ever see someone in distress or in need of any help at a show, please- help them out.”

Bear also gave a reminder to fans to follow the health and safety guidelines as regards to COVID-19, saying “the pandemic is still alive and well.

“Please prepare and take the proper precautions when attending events with large gatherings of people and respect the space of others.”

Toro Y Moi is the latest artist on the bill to donate his fees, after Roddy Ricch made a similar announcement earlier this week.

The incident has led to a growing number of lawsuits filed against Scott and promoter Live Nation, among other parties, with the family of a nine-year-old boy who is in a medically induced coma after sustaining injuries at the event seeking $1million in damages.

While Scott has yet to publicly comment on the lawsuits, he has previously said he is “devastated” by the incident and that he’s co-operating with authorities and “committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need.”

Live Nation previously announced that it is developing a fund to pay the medical fees of those who were injured, while Scott has said he will cover funeral costs for all victims, as well as offer free therapy sessions to those who were at the event.

Second defendant agrees to plead guilty to fentanyl distribution in Mac Miller case

A second defendant has agreed to plead guilty in the case involving Mac Miller‘s 2018 death from an accidental overdose.

READ MORE: Mac Miller – ‘Circles’ review: posthumous album is a conflicting, tantalising taste of what might have been

One of three defendants in the case, Ryan Michael Reavis previously plead not guilty, but has since agreed to plead guilty to the charge of fentanyl distribution.

It comes after his co-defendant, Stephen Andrew Walter, also agreed to plead guilty to fentanyl distribution last month, accepting a 17-year prison sentence for the waiving of more serious charges related to Miller’s death. Both Reavis and Walter expected to plead guilty before a district judge in Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

It was previously reported that Cameron James Pettit, the third defendant in the case, had also reached a plea agreement, but the case is currently pending. Walter, Pettit and Reavis were indicted in 2019 on charges of conspiracy and distribution of drugs resulting in death.

As Pitchfork reports, Reavis’ plea agreement accepts that on or around September 4 2018, Walter provided counterfeit oxycodone pills to Reavis, who then delivered them to Pettit, who finally distributed the pills to Miller.

“[Reavis] knew that these pills that defendant provided to Pettit contained fentanyl or some other federally controlled substance; in fact, the pills contained fentanyl,” the document reads.

Miller was found dead on September 7, with his death later determined an accidental drug overdose from a combination of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.

Reavis’ plea agreement asserts the rapper “would not have died from an overdose but for the fentanyl contained in the pills that [Miller] had received from Pettit (and that Pettit had received from [Reavis]) on September 4, 2018”.

8 Can’t-Miss Moments From the 2021 CMA Awards

After the pandemic caused last-minute changes at the CMA Awards last November, with artists testing positive for COVID-19 and dropping out right up to show time, Wednesday night’s celebration, the  55th annual CMA Awards, felt blessedly normal.

The Nov. 10 awards returned to Nashville’s full-capacity Bridgestone Arena after a scaled-down show at the Music City Center in 2020. There was a sense of relief that, even though the pandemic is still with us, we may have turned a corner with acts back on the road, the biggest names gathering together again, and crowds (in this case, fully vaccinated) screaming again for their favorite artists. “It’s a room full of joy,” declared Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey.

Hosted by Luke Bryan, this year’s show was heavy on performances and gratitude, with a number of moments that proved captivating and showed that country music continues to expand beyond its straight, mainly white male borders. There were historic firsts, including  T.J. Osborne kissing his boyfriend before accepting vocal duo of the year with his brother, and Mickey Guyton, Brittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards singing Guyton’s beautiful song of acceptance “Love My Hair.”

Among the show’s best moments:

Love Wins

As country music continues to struggle with diversity and inclusion, one of this year’s biggest stories was the Brothers Osborne’s T.J. Osborne coming out. The pair, who won vocal duo of the year from 2016-2018, recaptured their title after losing to Dan + Shay the past two years, and T.J. noted, “It’s been a crazy roller coaster of a year for us in so many ways, especially for me emotionally, and to have you all support me, it really does feel like love wins tonight, thank you.” But he saved his larger statement for when the Brothers Osborne performed “Younger Me,” a letter to his younger self that no doubt resonated with any viewers struggling with their sexuality or other hurdles. As T.J. said before starting the song, as a young boy, he never thought he would perform on the CMAs — not because he lacked talent, but “I always truthfully felt it would never be possible for me because of my sexuality to be here and I just wish my younger me could see me now.”

Strength in Numbers

Only a few years ago, it would have been unimaginable that the CMAs would have a performance about empowering Black women through their hair, but Mickey Guyton, Brittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards delivered an emotional and visual tour de force as they sang Guyton’s “Love My Hair.” With big hair and even bigger voices, they delivered a personal-yet-universal statement about acceptance that brought the audience to its feet and showed country music is at its best when it is talking about real topics.

Bridgestone on Fire

Last year’s entertainer of the year Eric Church turned in a smoldering performance of “Heart on Fire” that included fire rimming the stage and some incendiary guitar licks, but the real pyrotechnics came from Church’s backing vocalist and not-so-secret weapon Joanna Cotten, especially as the two sang together at the end, making it seems as if we’d dropped into a Church show already full-throttle.

Showstopper

The musical circle of life ran deep as Jennifer Hudson, on the Oscar stump for her role as Aretha Franklin in Respect, performed “The Nightlife,” recorded by Franklin in 1967. But the selection also heralded back to its country roots: Willie Nelson co-wrote the song and first released it in 1965. Hudson, who was joined by Chris Stapleton, then switched to “You Are My Sunshine,” which Franklin cut in 1967, performing it first as a slow ballad and then an upbeat handclapper. As Hudson took the Bridgestone audience to church on a Wednesday night, Stapleton had the biggest grin of the night on his face — more so than when he won his four awards — and you could literally see the country artists’ jaws dropping as Hudson hit and held rafter-raising notes in the evening’s most dazzling vocal performance.

The New Reba and Linda

Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde started slow but ultimately squeezed a grand dollop of melodrama out of “Never Wanted to Be That Girl,” an updated version of Reba McEntire and Linda Davis’s 1993 smash “Does He Love You,” with McBryde playing the (at-first unwitting) adulteress and Pearce playing the cheated- upon spouse. Even their color scheme — McBryde in black and Pearce in white, like in the video — reinforced the good girl/bad girl vibe. It could have used a little more sauciness, but their voices together were heavenly good. Then when Pearce was speechless after winning female vocalist of the year, McBryde showed she had her back by jumping onstage and talking until Pearce regained her composure.

Thank God He’s a Country Boy

Thomas Rhett showed that a good song needs little, if any, embellishment. To be sure, Rhett can bring the high-octane energy with the best of them, but his stripped-down performance of “Country Again,” in a version that felt more earthy and satisfying than the recorded version, was a gentle testament to his roots and his singing chops.

Cold as Ice

Chris Stapleton showed why he was the night’s big winner, snagging four out of the five awards for which he was nominated. His performance of “Cold,” about a woman so icy she cut him out without a second thought, was such a bluesy gut punch it’s easy to imagine that the temperature in Bridgestone dropped below freezing. Between the dirge-like opening, the strings, Stapleton’s guitar playing and unrelenting vocal growl, it was like he was channeling B.B. King as his heart was ripped out for all to see.

Strength in Numbers

Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood performed their multi-week No. 1 “If I Didn’t Love You” for the first time on live TV. Aldean would most certainly agree that when duetting with Underwood, the idea is just to hang on and not get overwhelmed by her powerful vocals, and Aldean did more than hold his own here, bringing a solidness to his part that allowed Underwood to vocally soar. We’re still trying to figure out the wrecked piano surrounded by cinder blocks motif though.

Morgan Wallen Weighs In on Twitter After CMA Awards Loss

Morgan Wallen may have lost in the album of the year race at Wednesday night’s (Nov. 10) 55th annual CMA Awards, but he took to Twitter to express nothing but gratitude just minutes after the show concluded.

“I wake up every morning and thank the Lord for my blessings,” Wallen tweeted. “Tomorrow morning will be no different. I love y’all.”

I wake up every morning and thank the Lord for my blessings. Tomorrow morning will be no different. I love y’all

— morgan wallen (@MorganWallen) November 11, 2021

As his fans know, Wallen — who won best new artist at the 2020 CMA Awards — not only lost; he was banned from even attending the ceremony, making him the only album of the year nominee not to perform. Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, which was the most-consumed album through mid-2021 according to MRC Data, was up against Carly Pearce’s 29, Eric Church’s Heart, Brothers Osborne’s Skeletons and the night’s winner, Chris Stapleton’s Starting Over.

Ever since video footage of Wallen using a racial slur surfaced in February, awards shows have wrestled with how to deal with Wallen. Some, including the Academy of Country Music Awards, declared him ineligible. The CMAs ruled that he wasn’t eligible for any solo awards, such as male artist of the year or entertainer of the year, but his collaborative works were eligible.

Wallen’s tweet was his first comment to address — no matter how obliquely — his CMA banishment. Though he was dropped by his booking agency, WME, Wallen has recently returned to the road, filling arenas in the south, with a full 2022 arena tour slated to be announced shortly.
