Alt-J’s Thom Green on returning to touring in a pandemic: “We’re just going to have to be extra vigilant”

Alt-J’s Thom Green has spoken about returning to touring in a pandemic as someone who is considered clinically extremely vulnerable.

The drummer has a rare genetic condition, which meant he had to have a kidney transplant when he was a student. He now has to take medication to help his body accept the kidney, but which also suppresses his immune system.

With Alt-J preparing to go back on tour across the UK and the US in February in support of their upcoming album ‘The Dream’, which is released on February 11, Green has spoken about the realities of touring in this time. “We’re just going to have to be extra vigilant,” he told the BBC. “Whatever we have to do, that’s what we’ll do because it’ll be so worth it just to get on stage again.”

During the summer, the musician caught COVID-19 and was hospitalised for a week. “The symptoms dragged on for three or four months,” he explained. “I’m actually fortunate that I’m OK and I’m back to normal, but I don’t want that to happen again.”

In November, the band – which is completed by keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton and singer and guitarist Joe Newman – released a new single that paid tribute to frontline workers. “The context of the coronavirus pandemic lent my words a chilling weight and gave me a new sense of responsibility as a lyricist,” Newman said of ‘Get Better’.

“Whilst the direct events described are fictional, I believe – or I hope – that it’s emotionally the most honest song I’ve written.”

Alt-J’s UK and Ireland tour will begin in Glasgow on May 7, visiting Leeds, Manchester, London, Dublin and Belfast before concluding in Birmingham on May 27. Before that, they will embark on a North American tour at the end of February, including shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden and LA’s Staples Center.

Nirvana file official response to ‘Nevermind’ baby lawsuit: “He has been fully aware of the facts”

Nirvana have filed an official response to a lawsuit from the man who was photographed as a baby for the cover of ‘Nevermind’.

Spencer Elden, 30, is suing the band over the photo of him as an infant, in which he appears naked and swimming after a dollar bill in a swimming pool. He has claimed that he has suffered “lifelong damages” from the image and that it is “commercial child sexual exploitation” and child pornography.

Representatives for Nirvana have now issued a statement refuting the claims in the lawsuit, saying it is “not serious” and is beyond the statute of limitations. The lawsuit would only apply within 10 years of him finding out he was the baby on the album cover and the group rejected the idea that he had only discovered this in the last decade.

“But the ‘Nevermind’ cover photograph was taken in 1991,” the statement read, as Billboard reports. “It was world-famous by no later than 1992. Long before 2011, as Elden has pled, Elden knew about the photograph and knew that he (and not someone else) was the baby in the photograph. He has been fully aware of the facts of both the supposed ‘violation’ and ‘injury’ for decades.”

It continued to cite occasions where Elden seemingly embraced being on the cover. “Elden has spent three decades profiting from his celebrity as the self-anointed ‘Nirvana Baby’,” claimed the band’s representatives. It noted that Elden has recreated the photo on more than one occasion and has ‘Nevermind’ tattooed on his chest.

In response to the man’s claims that the photo is equal to child pornography, the band said it was “not serious”. “A brief examination of the photograph, or Elden’s own conduct (not to mention the photograph’s presence in the homes of millions of Americans who, on Elden’s theory, are guilty of felony possession of child pornography) makes that clear,” they wrote.

The original lawsuit was filed in August 2021, with Elden seeking $150,000 (£112k) in damages from drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic, the estate of Kurt Cobain, album artwork photographer Kirk Weddle and designer Robert Fisher. The labels responsible for the album’s release, including Universal Music and Geffen Records, were also named.

In November, Elden made amendments to the lawsuit, alleging that he had also been styled and photographed as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The amended claim also brought up unearthed journal entries allegedly made by Cobain, which present a “sketch [of] the album cover in a sexual manner, with semen all over it”, and removed former Nirvana drummer Chad Channing’s name from the suit.

As well as damages, Elden wants the album art to be altered for any future re-releases of the record. “If there is a 30th-anniversary re-release, he wants for the entire world not to see his genitals,” his lawyer Maggie Mabie said. A 30th-anniversary reissue was released in November, using the original cover art.

Grohl previously said he had “many ideas” of how the cover could be changed, depending on the results of the lawsuit. “We’ll let you know,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll come up with something good.”

A number of legal experts, meanwhile, have said that they believe the case is likely to be dismissed. Entertainment litigation partner Bryan Sullivan told The Hollywood Reporter that there being no release form, as Elden claims, “does not mean he has a claim for child pornography”.

“As to the right of privacy, you can waive it by your actions or by his parents’ actions in allowing him to be photographed,” he said.

Entertainment lawyer Andrew Brettler added that some of Elden’s past actions could damage his case, saying: “What I think really damns their case is the fact that this kid sat for all these interviews and re-created the album art.”

Ex-Mumford & Sons member Winston Marshall to return as ‘Spectator’ podcast host

Former Mumford & Sons member Winston Marshall has announced his first project since leaving the band in June 2021.

The banjo player and guitarist quit the group this summer after controversy was raised over a since-deleted tweet in which he praised right-wing author Andy Ngo.

Writing on his personal Twitter page earlier this week (December 20), Marshall confirmed what he termed “exciting personal news”. “I’m partnering @spectator to bring you… Marshall Matters,” he wrote.

His bio on the social media site confirms that Marshall Matters is a new podcast set to launch next year. In his tweet, he added it will see him “interviewing people across the creative industries to find out what indeed is the state of the arts”. “This is gonna be fun,” he said.

— Winston Marshall (@MrWinMarshall) December 20, 2021

In March, Marshall had shared praise for Ngo’s book Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan To Destroy Democracy, calling it “important” and its author “a brave man”, and immediately faced a backlash for his words.

After announcing his departure from Mumford & Sons, the musician said in a BBC Radio 4 interview that his former bandmates had been targeted by “internet mobs”, while he himself had received “a lot of very horrible negativity” over his tweet.

“What was sort of unpleasant about it is that they went for my bandmates, they went for my friends, and that’s not fair on them because it’s got nothing to do with them,” he said, adding that was “what was so troubling for me about the experience – was to see my friends getting dragged under the bus with me, which is not fair on them.”

Marshall confirmed he was leaving the band with a statement reflecting on his time with them. “From odysseys through the Scottish Islands to headlining Glastonbury, from The Betsy Trotwood to Madison Square Garden. We’ve done it all,” he wrote. “What a blessing it was to be so close to such talent as those three lads. I will look back at it all with immense pride and love. However, after much reflection and consideration, I have decided it is time to move on.”

Joni Mitchell shares first official video for 1971 classic ‘River’

Joni Mitchell has shared the first official music video for her classic track ‘River’, which was released in 1971.

The song featured on the singer-songwriter’s seminal album ‘Blue’ and over the years has become a melancholy Christmas staple.

For its first-ever video, ‘River’ has been given the animation treatment by director Matvey Rezanov and Skazka Studios. Splashes of black land on a white screen like dripping ink on a page before forming a black-and-white portrait of Mitchell looking out over a frozen mass of water.

Later, the cartoon musician is seen ice skating over the river, before it cracks and turns to a branch growing in a dark sky. According to a press release, the visuals “capture the song’s lonesome mood while paying tribute to Mitchell’s prolific creativity as a painter”. Watch it below now.

In a statement, the star said: “‘River’ expresses regret at the end of a relationship, but it’s also about being lonely at Christmas time. A Christmas song for people who are lonely at Christmas! We need a song like that.”

Yesterday (December 22), Mitchell was celebrated at the 2021 Kennedy Center Honors, where she received a lifetime achievement award. At the event, the likes of Ellie Goulding, Norah Jones and Brittany Howard all paid tribute to the iconic musician, performing their own versions of some of her best-loved songs.

President Joe Biden delivered a speech honouring the star, saying: “Your words and melodies touch the deepest parts of our souls. [Mitchell has] a capacity to love with abandon, and she does it by letting us in, by sharing what’s deeply personal and yet universal. It’s why millions of people will listen to her songs and feel they were written just for them.”

He went on to call ‘Blue’ “one of the best albums ever, ever, ever” and praised Mitchell for “[touching] the range of human nature and the sense of struggle and how we overcome and how we love”.

More celebrations of Mitchell will be held next year following the confirmation that she is MusiCares’ 2022 ‘Person Of The Year’. A tribute concert to her will take place on January 29, 2022 in LA, with performers to be confirmed.

D Smoke Provides Gifts & Caroling to L.A. Foster Youth Ahead of War & Wonders Tour: ‘It Was Magical’

Ahead of his debut North American War & Wonders Tour, which launches Jan. 11 in San Diego, Grammy-nominated rapper and Rhythm + Flow inaugural champion D Smoke is wrapping up an incredible year by giving back to younger people in need.

On Saturday (Dec. 18), the Inglewood, California, native and former high school teacher hosted a Reimagining CommUNITY During the Holidays event, in partnership with CASA of Los Angeles, Crete Academy and Cancel The Contract: Antelope Valley.

During the heartwarming festivities, D Smoke and his his wife, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and violinist Angelina Sherie, were joined by their parents and pet dog, along with local Crete Academy elementary school students, to sing Christmas carols for South Central Los Angeles foster children at transitional youth and foster homes Sanctuary of Hope and Project Destiny Group Home. D Smoke also provided gifts to the youth, presented by Adidas and Black Santa. D Smoke concluded his holiday give-back with an intimate gathering at Sip & Sonder in Inglewood.

“Cancel the Contract is doing great work that’s aligned with the work I’ve been doing since I was in college, whether it be providing access to higher education or serving communities where education needs love and attention,” the “Black Habits” hitmaker tells Billboard. “Their mission is to stand against over-policing in schools.”

D Smoke goes caroling and provides gifts to South Central LA foster youth alongside his family and Crete Academy student singers in collaboration with CASA of Los Angeles and Cancel The Contract Antelope Valley on Saturday, Dec. 18.

“The culture and love for elementary school students at Crete Academy is beautiful,” adds the education reform advocate. “Even the language [they use] and how the staff is trained to deal with kids is super aware, conscious and responsible of how it affects children. And CASA of Los Angeles, those were the perfect organizations [to collaborate with].”

D Smokes recalls a particularly memorable moment from Saturday’s benefit event. “I come from church so to see the young kids really minister and positively impact teenagers [was amazing]. The little kids are so free and innocent-thinking, so it was magical to see a teenager who may have been at her breaking point tearing up because the little girl who had a solo while singing ‘Jingle Bells’ decided to make up her own lyrics. It was a beautiful moment because you’re left to assume that if somebody is feeling sensitive, it’s probably because they’re having a hard time with something. So that moment may have been encouraging.”

Speaking further on the importance of giving back and remaining active in his local community amid his rapid rise to fame, D Smoke explains, “People need to see success in places where they don’t see it all the time. Visibility is extremely important because when people see you within arm’s reach, the things you’ve accomplished become possible to them.”

L to R: Christian Green, Campaign Coordinator of Cancel the Contract AV Coalition; Waunette Cullors, Activist & Steering Committee Member of Cancel the Contract AV Coalition; D Smoke, Brett Mitchell, Co-Founder and Principal of The Crete Academy; Hattie Mitchell, Founder of The Crete Academy; Charity Chandler-Cole, CEO of CASA of Los Angeles

He adds that giving back to others also provides a personal sense of fulfillment and purpose. “The other side of it is that serving the community does something for a person. It puts things into perspective for the person doing the work,” he says.

And for Smoke, who previously taught Spanish classes, music recording and financial literacy at Inglewood High School, View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter High School, Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets High and more academic institutions for a decade, it’s especially important to restore his native South Central L.A. community. After all, his grandma’s family home has been nestled in Inglewood since the ’70s.

Simply put, “giving back improves me. It makes me a better person and a better artist,” he says.

“It’s giving me all the energy and fuel to make better art,” says D Smoke, who released his sophomore studio album, War & Wonders, in September. His debut studio album, Black Habits, debuted at No. 25 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart in February and was Grammy nominated for best rap album last year.

With all of his success in music, D Smoke still prioritizes the youth. “Kids need exposure and that’s given from professionals from diverse careers,” he explains. “They have to see their dreams in someone else and they need exposure to resources and the opportunity to explore their talents in different crafts so they can learn. They also need well-funded centers, from music and film recording studios to technology centers.”

D Smoke goes caroling and provides gifts to South Central LA foster youth alongside his family and Crete Academy student singers in collaboration with CASA of Los Angeles and Cancel The Contract Antelope Valley on Saturday, Dec. 18.

Smoke tied the knot with his wife Sherie on July 24. She appears in the album artwork for War & Wonders and will join Smoke on tour. Also exciting during D Smoke’s North American War & Wonders tour, fans can expect to see special appearances from his cousin Tiffany Gouché and Domani Harris (rapper T.I.’s son). “These are people who are true artists and with this being my first outing, people are going to see an authentic view of the art in person,” he says.

Pianist Smoke teases, “There will be some piano moments where I’m playing and rapping scaled down things and there will be full show moments. We’re excited and I trust that everything is going to work together as it should.”

The tour will run from the U.S. and Canada from Jan. 11 to Feb. 9, with stops in California, Texas, Maryland, Philadelphia and more. Tickets are available for purchase at D Smoke’s official website.

Weverse Fandom Report 2021: BTS, BLACKPINK Dominate as Subscriber Count Passes 36M

On Thursday (Dec. 23), HYBE’s global fan community platform Weverse revealed its second annual 2021 “Weverse Fandom Trend,” which breaks down the year’s most popular topics, hashtags, keywords and posts among Weverse fandoms worldwide.

The growth in Weverse subscribers was substantial this year, surpassing 36 million from 238 countries. That’s up a whopping 16.8 million from 2020, though that number does include duplicate subscribers, according to a press release announcing the 2021 report. The total number of posts on Weverse in 2021 approximately doubled from the number of posts last year, exceeding 240 million as of Dec. 14, while the total number of comments reached 460 million. The total number of moments, posts and comments written by artists themselves reached 120,000.

The most popular hashtag in 2021 was #BTS with 1.96 million uses, followed by #BLINK_in_Weverse, which celebrated BLACKPINK’s arrival on the platform, at 240,000 uses. The third most popular at 230,000 uses was #CARNIVALwithENGENE, which arose following discussions around ENHYPEN’s second mini-album, BORDER: CARNIVAL.

Twenty-three artists joined Weverse in 2021, including BLACKPINK, Cherry Bullet, New Hope Club, Treasure, FTISLAND, iKON, STAYC, ONEUS and WINNER. That brings the total number of artists on the platform — which also hosts fandoms for BTS, Seventeen and ENHYPEN, among others — to 36.

The most popular new fandom of 2021 was BLACKPINK, which launched their community in August and saw the quickest fan-subscription accumulation of any new Weverse artist this year, with over 1 million subscribers joining on the first day.

Speaking of BLACKPINK, the day with the greatest number of visitors this year came on Aug. 3, when BLACKPINK began interacting on Weverse one day after first joining the platform. Also on that day, “Butter” became BTS’ ninth No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, leading to celebration among fans on Weverse.

The second-highest number of visitors came on Dec. 9, when “Super Tuna” — a song written by BTS member Jin to celebrate his birthday — trended at No. 1 on YouTube globally. The third-highest occurred on Oct. 15, when Seventeen revealed the title and track list of the lead single from their ninth EP Attacca; also on that day, Season 2 of Big Hit’s BTS reality series In the SOOP BTS premiered.

In a year of continued social distancing amid the ongoing pandemic, in-person interactions remained minimal while online events, including virtual fan meets, livestreamed concerts, one-on-one video chats and more, continued to thrive. Additionally, Weverse notes that online interactions between artists and fandoms “evolved” over the past year.

As an example, the company cites Jung Kook of BTS composing a song made up of lyrics collected from the BTS fandom via “moment” comments. BTS’ V also hosted an acrostic poems event, to which he submitted his own entry and a video response. Seungkwan of Seventeen watched a volleyball game in real-time with his fans while communicating through post comments, while New Hope Club uploaded cover videos of songs by BTS and Tomorrow x Together and discussed them with fans.

Among all artists, Song Hayoung of K-pop girl group fromis_9 recorded the highest number of interactions with fans on Weverse last year, logging 86 instant comments.

“Online interactions between artists and fans evolved in various ways during prolonged social distancing protocols,” Weverse said in a statement. “Even as offline events make their gradual return, it is probable that more and more services will implement both online and offline approaches. It is expected that platform businesses will focus on enhancing the synergy between the two activities to better meet the needs of fandoms.”

Kith’s 10th Anniversary Sees Ronnie Fieg Revisit 2013’s “Daytona” Colorway On The New Balance 990v3

Founded by Ronnie Fieg in 2011, the New York City-based label Kith has accomplished a lot in just a decade. And while partnerships with Coca-Cola, BMW and a plethora of other institutions have consistently raised the bar for what a “streetwear” brand can do, footwear collaborations with companies the likes of New Balance have allowed opened many doors for Fieg’s team.

In celebration of Kith’s 10th anniversary, the Queens-native has put together a handful of special projects, which includes a New Balance 990v3 dipped in the fan-favorite “Daytona” colorway first seen atop the New Balance 1600 in 2013. As was the case with the ASICS GEL-Lyte V duo launched on November 26th, the newly-surfaced pair pays homage to past “RF”-branded sneakers, envisioning old color-blockings in new ways. Inspired by trips to Daytona Beach, Florida Fieg went on with his family when he was younger, the arrangement couples premium pig suede, breathable mesh and smooth leather with a navy, cream and light brown color palette. The “Daytona”‘s highly-visible touch of pink at the profile “N” logos reprises its role, though it’s removed from the NB 990v3’s tongue underside, vamp area and outsole. “RF”-stamped lace dubraes and the clever “KXTH” logo at the spine bring some of that SoFlo flair into the mix, while sole units keep things simple in a slight yellow, white and black makeup.

Enjoy early images of the New Balance 990v3 “Daytona” by Ronnie Fieg for Kith, and anticipate a Kith.com launch in 2022.

Daft Punk Returns to No. 1 on Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart With ‘Tron: Legacy’

Daft Punk re-enters Billboard‘s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart (dated Dec. 25) at No. 1 with its Tron: Legacy soundtrack, following the release of its Target exclusive blue/clear vinyl edition. The set registered 10,000 equivalent album units in the Dec. 10-16 tracking week, up 1,364%, with nearly all (94%) from physical sales, according to MRC Data.

It’s the 11th total week at No. 1 for Tron, and its first since April 30, 2011. In its first chart run, the soundtrack to the hit 2010 sci-fi film debuted atop the chart dated exactly 11 years ago this week (Dec. 25, 2010). Among 10 career entries on the chart, the now-defunct French duo owns six No. 1s, the most of any duo or group, and trails only Louie DeVito and Lady Gaga, each with seven toppers, dating to the chart’s 2001 inception.

Daft Punk’s other Top Dance/Electronic Albums No. 1s are: Human After All (2005), Alive 2007 (two weeks at No. 1, 2007), Tron: Legacy Reconfigured (2011), Random Access Memories (21 weeks, 2013-14) and Discovery (2021).

‘Birthday’ present: Tempo and El Alfa begin at No. 23 on the multi-metric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart with “Happy Birthday.” The Latin/EDM crossover track, which heavily samples Reel 2 Real’s “I Like to Move It,” featuring The Mad Stuntman (which reached No. 8 on Dance Club Songs and No. 89 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1994), earned 1.1 million airplay audience impressions and 484,000 U.S. streams in the tracking week.

On Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, “Birthday” marks Tempo’s first appearance. It’s the first as a lead act, and third overall, for El Alfa, who was previously featured on Major Lazer and J Balvin’s “Que Calor” (No. 6, 2019) and, alongside Sean Paul, Play N Skillz and Sfera Ebbasta, on Steve Aoki and Willy William’s “Mambo” (No. 41, this February).

‘Signals’ on signals: Shifting to the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, Regard and Kwabs hit the top 10 with “Signals” (12-7). The fourth top 10 for Regard and first for Kwabs is drawing core-dance airplay across outlets including MusicChoice’s Dance/EDM Channel, KMVQ-HD2 San Francisco and WZFL (Revolution 93.5) Miami. (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on nearly 80 top 40-formatted reporters.)
