“I was in between living situations when I wrote this. I remember just being posted up inside my car, writing, in a Whole Foods parking lot (they always have free WiFi). I had a lot on my mind that day. I sent the vocals to Shöckface and he built all the production around them. Not many producers can do that well, but he’s a fuckin genius man. This song was the beginning to me and Shöckface’s musical relationship, and we’ve worked on so many projects since then. I can’t wait for you guys to hear it all.”

Watch Elton John resume his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour in New Orleans

Elton John returned to the stage last night to resume his ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ tour – you can see the setlist and watch fan-shot footage below.

READ MORE: The NME Big Read – Elton John: “I’m not interested in the past – not even Elton John’s past”

After multiple delays, the legendary artist played at the Smoothie King Center in  New Orleans, Louisiana yesterday (January 19) where he treated the sold-out crowd to a career-spanning, hit-packed set.

The musician kicked off the 21-track concert by performing ‘Bennie And The Jets’ from his 1973 album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’. He went on to dust off favourites such as ‘Tiny Dancer’, ‘Rocket Man’, ‘I’m Still Standing’, ‘Crocodile Rock’ and ‘Your Song’.

Towards the end of the show, John performed a solo rendition of ‘Cold Heart (PNAU Remix)’ from his star-studded latest studio album, ‘The Lockdown Sessions’. It marked the first live airing of the song.

Check out a selection of videos from the concert here:

Last night’s show marked John’s first ‘Farewell Yellow Brick Road’ gig since he performed in Australia in early March 2020. Since then, ongoing COVID-related restrictions have prevented the star from making his live comeback.

“This is a new experience for us,” John told the crowd at the start of yesterday’s concert. “I’ve never had this amount of time off in my life, as far as playing music. Well, at least since I was 17 years of age.

“I have a fact for you: you have been holding on to these tickets for 745 days. And I can’t thank you enough for being so patient. We live in funny times but we’re gonna have a great time!”

Elton John played:

1. Bennie And The Jets
2. Philadelphia Freedom
3. Border Song
4. Tiny Dancer
5. Have Mercy On The Criminal
6. Rocket Man
7. Take Me To The Pilot
8. Someone Saved My Life Tonight
9. Levon
10. Candle In The Wind (solo)
11. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
12. Burn Down The Mission
13. Sad Songs (Say So Much)
14. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me
15. The Bitch Is Back
16. I’m Still Standing
17. Crocodile Rock
18. Saturday’s Alright For Fighting
19. Cold Heart (solo)
20. Your Song
21. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

John was due to play a run of rescheduled UK headline dates between October and December 2021. However, he was forced to postpone the shows to 2023 after sustaining a hip injury from an “awkward” fall.

Speaking to NME as part of a Big Read cover interview in October, Elton John said he was determined to finish the tour, but confirmed that it will also certainly be his last.

“It’s something I wanna finish,” he told NME. “I’m looking forward to doing it and going out on the high that we were on – we were an express train that hit the buffers. At the moment I finish supposedly in 2023, in the summer, by which time I’ll be 76 – and that’s it, baby.”

Taylor Swift Tapped as First Record Store Day Global Ambassador

Taylor Swift has been tapped as the first-ever global ambassador for Record Store Day, with the singer stepping up to help mark the 15th anniversary of the annual celebration. In an announcement, the RSD braintrust wrote, “RSD AMBASSADOR (Taylor’s Version,” a nod to the singer’s recent re-recordings of her classic Fearless and Red albums.

“Thanks to @taylorswift for putting on the sash and serving as the first ever GLOBAL RECORD STORE DAY AMBASSADOR, helping us celebrate the culture of the independent record store around the world.” This year’s RSD will take place on April 23, with the official list of this year’s RSD releases coming soon.

“I’m very proud to be this year’s Ambassador for Record Store Day,” Swift said in a statement. “The places where we go to browse and explore and discover music new and old have always been sacred to me. Record stores are so important because they help to perpetuate and foster music-loving as a passion. They create settings for live events. They employ people who adore music thoroughly and purely. Those people and shops have had a rough few years and we need to support these small businesses more now than ever to make sure they can stay alive, stay eccentric, and stay individual. It’s been a true joy for me to watch vinyl sales grow in the past few years and we, the artists, have the fans to thank for this pleasant surprise. Happy Record Store Day, everyone! Stay safe out there.”

The announcement noted that during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 Swift “took her support a step further, directing fans to record stores around the country where they could find autographed CDs, bringing much needed traffic and attention at a time of business uncertainty. She also then made a quiet, thoughtful gesture to a store she knows well, Grimey’s New and Pre-loved Music in Nashville.”

“We’re thrilled to learn that Taylor Swift is our 2022 Record Store Day Ambassador!,” said Anna Lundy and Doyle Davis of Grimey’s in a statement. “Swift has shown her love and support for independent record stores by not only supporting our shop specifically during the dark, early days of the pandemic, when she directly donated to help us support our staff, but also by steering her eager, excited, and dedicated fans to independent record stores, places that many of them visited for the first time while in search of her signed CDs. As Swift has grown as an artist, we’ve watched her fans grow with her and have been delighted to see her taking control of her recordings and working with musicians like Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, artists whose music has resonated in shops like ours for years. We can’t think of a better choice for RSD Ambassador for 2022!”

Swift has supported RSD a number of times in the past, offering up special versions of her albums 1989 and Speak Now and a 7″ vinyl single version of Haim’s single, “Gasoline.”

“The role of RSD Ambassador is, of course, something we take seriously in the sense that it helps us do our job of shining a light on these special places,” said RSD co-founder Carrie Colliton in a statement. “We’re pretty picky about the people we invite to “wear the sash”, and we always want to make sure those Ambassadors genuinely love record stores and are creative about ways to celebrate them. But mostly it’s a title we want people to have fun with, and we know that our RSD 2022 Ambassador loves having fun, loves music, and loves record stores.  For our 15th Record Store Day, we’re teaming up with a woman who does all that and just happens to be one of the biggest artists on the planet.”

Swift helped record stores around the world weather the storm of coronavirus-enforced closures and restrictions by sending them signed copies of her surprise-released 2020 albums, ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’.

The star also directly donated to Grimey’s New & Preloved Music, a record shop in her hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. “We’re thrilled to learn that Taylor Swift is our 2022 Record Store Day Ambassador!” said the store’s Anna Lundy and Doyle Davis.

Last May, Taylor Swift broke the record for the biggest one-week vinyl album sales in the US with ‘Evermore’. Her re-recorded version of 2008’s ‘Fearless’ later shot back to the top of the US Billboard 200 chart thanks to huge physical sales of the album.

Jamie Webster criticises ticket resale sites: “If we don’t speak up against it, nothing will change”

Singer-songwriter Jamie Webster has shared a video on social media criticising ticket resale sites, former culture secretary Sajid Javid and the way politics is “entwined” with the music industry.

READ MORE: As live music returns, let’s build back fairer – by wiping out unscrupulous touts

The viral clip has been viewed almost 400,000 times across Twitter and Instagram, racked up thousands of likes on TikTok and been shared by members of Bastille.

“If you’ve ever been ripped off for gig tickets, then this video is for you,” Webster began.

“My two gigs at The Cavern sold out within fifteen seconds last week but then I found out they were back onsale on resale sites like Viagogo for prices up to £143. That’s more than 3 times as much as the original ticket price (£27). It got me thinking, why hasn’t this been stopped? Why is this still going on.”

Webster continued: “Turns out, in May 2014 a bill was put forward, which passed its first reading, to stop ticketing websites selling tickets on for more than 10 percent of the original face value. Anyone who infringed on that would receive a hefty fine.

“Our now Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Sajid Javid came out and spoke against it, he was Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport back then. He came out and said it is ‘a service that deserves to be rewarded’ so long as the original tickets have been brought legally and legitimately.”

“He then came out and said ‘as someone who believes passionately in the virtues of the free market and who is on the side of the ordinary, common working man, I respectfully oppose the Bill’. Common, ordinary working man, as if we’re some sort of animal species,” added Webster.

Preach!!! https://t.co/7SE7Lk6t8q

— Woody (@Woodythedrum) January 19, 2022

“To add to all this, the CEO of Viagogo and Stubhub, Eric Baker has just bought his third Beverly Hills mansion for $39million (£28.6million). So, if you’re wondering where all the money goes when you buy these tickets for stupid prices, you’re just buying this fella another house.”

Webster finished by saying: “I’ve got people telling me to keep my politics out of music. After all that I’ve told you, here’s a lesson for you. Politics is well and truly entwined in the music industry and if we don’t speak up against it, nothing will change.”

Webster’s comments come as last year, new proposals from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) would see secondary ticketing websites fined or shut down under new rules aiming to battle against “unscrupulous” ticket touts.

Under the new proposals, websites such as Viagogo and StubHub would need to gain licenses to operate, and could be fined or have their sites taken down if they are found to break consumer protection rules.

In response to the CMA’s proposals, Labour MP Sharon Hodgson – who has led a group of MPs examining secondary ticket use – said work needs to be done to tackle the “parasitical market” of secondary ticketing.

“The abuses in the secondary ticket market are clear as day and the CMA have been provided a wealth of evidence on this,” Hodgson said. “Fixing the secondary ticket market to make it fit for fans will require political will from the government and time allowed in parliament.”

Back in 2019, Google suspended Viagogo from advertising on its platform amid concerns that the resale site was allowing touts to use the site to sell tickets at an inflated price.

Viagogo also recently faced further legal action from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). MPs and campaigners for fair ticket prices have also hit out at the site, with MPs warning music fans to avoid using Viagogo until it “fully complies with consumer law”.

Sia Says Friend Kathy Griffin ‘Saved My Life’ After Media Firestorm Over ‘Music’ Movie

Buried deep in a just-published New York Times profile of  Kathy Griffin’s quest to get back onto the D-list following the widespread backlash to the comedian’s 2017 photo shoot with a bloody Halloween mask of Donald Trump is the previously undisclosed story of how Griffin helped save singer/songwriter Sia‘s life.

The piece chronicles the acerbic comedian’s slow return from Hollywood exile in the wake of the photo stunt, noting that along the way she befriended Sia, who was enmeshed in her own media whirlwind surrounding the 2021 film musical she wrote and directed, Music. The widely panned movie musical that the Times notes was criticized by disability rights activists for its depiction of people on the autism spectrum and for its casting of a neurotypical actor in the lead role — Sia’s longtime dancer/foil Maddie Ziegler — was a passion project for the singer.

In a Jan. 2021 interview, Sia recalled that on the first day of rehearsals, Ziegler was very worried that audiences might think she was “making fun” of the autism community, to which Sia replied, “I won’t let that happen. And last week I realized I couldn’t really protect her from that. I thought I could.” Ziegler played the title role of “Music” in the film, a non-verbal teen who is suddenly thrown into a relationship with her newly sober half-sister, played by Kate Hudson.

In addition to weathering a torrent of harsh online comments, a petition drive was launched to have the movie’s release canceled. According to the Times, the avalanche of negative reaction pushed Sia to the edge. “I was suicidal and relapsed and went to rehab,” Sia told the paper, adding that Griffin’s help was key to getting her through the experience. “She saved my life.” At press time a spokesperson for Sia had not returned requests for additional comment.

Despite writing and recording dozens of Billboard Hot 100 hits for herself as well as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry and many more, Sia has long eschewed the spotlight by wearing elaborate wigs and costumes and rarely performing on stage. The singer has also previously discussed her struggles with addiction and suicidal ideation.

But at the behest of Griffin, the normally camera-shy Sia accompanied the comedian to a West Hollywood restaurant that is a paparazzi hangout last November sans costume to help out her friend.

“I just need one good picture out there besides those that say, ‘Kathy Griffin is a jihadist,’” Griffin told the paper she said to comedian/director Judd Apatow, who was reportedly her first choice for a date that night. Instead, Sia drove to the spot with Griffin, “strategically timing their arrival to be ‘caught’ by photographers.”

“We were joking that we were on Survivor: Hollywood,” Sia said of the stunt, which resulted in some snaps running in The Daily Mail. The warm, smiling shots of the two — a rare instance of Sia not obscuring her face in public — ran under the headline “Sia shares a warm hug with Kathy Griffin at dinner… after singer helped the comedian restore her voice following lung cancer surgery.”

At the time of the backlash, Sia explained to online commenters that she wrote the script and 10 original songs for the accompanying album after spending three years doing research. She also said that Music was based on an unnamed friend on the spectrum who “found it too stressful being non verbal, and I made this movie with nothing but love for him and his mother.” She also noted that there were 13 people on the spectrum cast in the film and that two people on the spectrum were advising her at all times, calling the movie a “love letter to caregivers and to the autism community.”

If you or anyone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255, or dial 988) for free, confidential support and resources 24/7.

Charlie Puth Can’t Turn Off His Desire on Funky ‘Light Switch’

Charlie Puth has a love he just can’t shake on his new single, “Light Switch.” The funky, uptempo track the singer has been teasing for months dropped on Thursday morning (Jan. 20) as the first taste of Charlie, his upcoming follow-up to 2018’s Grammy-nominated Voicenotes.

“You turn me on like a light switch/ When you’re movin’ your body around and around/ Now, I don’t wanna fight this/ You know how to just make me want/ You turn me on like a light switch/ When you’re movin’ your body around and around/ You got me in a tight grip,” he sings over a propulsive beat in a longing falsetto on the track he produced and co-wrote with longtime collaborators Jake Torrey and JKash.

Puth, 30, breaks down the frustration of trying to walk away and getting pulled right back every time on the bouncy track that features the familiar click of a light switch on the chorus. And while little is known about the album so far, Puth has been dropping nuggets about “Switch” on his social feeds for months, noting on Dec. 28 of last year that in the three years since Voicenotes his voice has changed for a very good reason.

“First thing you’ll notice is my voice sounds different because I had my nose fixed and tonsils out…I sound less…scratchy hahah,” he tweeted. He’s also posted a series of TikTok videos cued to the single’s instantly earworm refrain, with the official video for the track slated to drop at noon ET on Thurdsay.
