Red Hot Chili Peppers have covered Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit‘ – watch footage below.

The band played a benefit concert for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music on Saturday  (October 29) and covered the grunge classic for the first time during their set.

Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis sang the first verse with his shirt pulled over his face, before guitarist John Frusciante took on singing the song’s iconic chorus.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers toured with Nirvana in 1991. Bassist Flea recalled the tour during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, saying: “I remember just feeling like, you know, they’re good bands, but Nirvana, they were really carrying a heavy magic with them, just this feeling like they are a powerful entity to be respected.”

Kiedis said that he was “pretty nervous” being around Nirvana singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain because he was “in awe” of his work and Cobain “wasn’t the type who wanted to discuss being a frontman, he was just kind of shy and in his energetic state”.

Meanwhile, D.H. Peligro, the drummer for Dead Kennedys and briefly the Chili Peppers died on Friday (October) at the age of 63 from an accidental fall.

Born Darren Henley in St. Louis, Missouri in 1959, Peligro joined Dead Kennedys in 1981, replacing founding drummer Ted (real name Bruce Slesinger). After the band broke up in 1986, Peligro briefly joined Red Hot Chili Peppers as replacement for Jack Irons, although he was fired less than a year later due to drug and alcohol-related issues.

Among those to pay tribute was Flea, who tweeted: “DH Peligro forever and ever. The funnest, kindest and the rockingest. My dear brother I’m so grateful for our time I love you forever.”

In an extended Instagram post, Flea added: “My dear friend, my brother I miss you so much. I’m devastated today, a river of tears, but all my life I will treasure every second. The first time I saw you play with the DK’s in ‘81 you blew my mind. The power, the soul, the recklessness. You became my beloved friend, so many times of every kind.

“We had so much fun, so much joy, having each other’s backs. I love you with all my heart. You are the truest rocker, and a crucial part of rhcp history. D H P in the place to be, you live forever in our hearts, you wild man, you bringer of joy, you giant hearted man. I will always honor you. Rest In Peace and freedom from all that restrained you.”

The Chili Peppers’ latest album, ‘Dream Canteen‘ – their second of 2022 – was released earlier this month.

Jack White delivers surprise cover of ‘Van Lear Rose’ at Loretta Lynn tribute show

Jack White made a surprise appearance at a Loretta Lynn tribute show last night (October 30) and performed a cover of her song ‘Van Lear Rose’.

The soloist and former The White Stripes singer and guitarist wasn’t initially listed for the tribute concert to Lynn, who died earlier this month at the age of 90.

But White made a last-minute appearance with his rendition of the title track from the late country singer-songwriter’s 2004 album.

He produced the late star’s 42nd solo album ‘Van Lear Rose’, played guitar on it, and sang a duet with Lynn.

In an Instagram tribute earlier this month, White wrote that Lynn was “a mother figure”, a “very good friend”, and “the greatest female singer-songwriter of the 20th century”.

Watch his performance below.

White joined several country greats at Sunday’s show held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, including George Strait, Alan Jackson, Tanya Tucker and Wynonna Judd.

The show also featured Margo Price, another Lynn collaborator, singing Lynn’s 1975 classic ‘The Pill’.

Three of the four members of The Highwomen, the all-star country-rock supergroup, gathered to perform Lynn’s ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’. Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby sang the song together, with Brittany Spencer standing in for the absent Maren Morris.

On her own, Highwomen member Carlile sang ‘She’s Got You’, which Lynn famously recorded in tribute to her own late friend Patsy Cline.

The show also featured performances from Alan Jackson, Darius Rucker, Emmy Russell and Lukas Nelson, Keith Urban and Little Big Town, as well as testimonials from Taylor Swift, Sissy Spacek, Dolly Parton, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert and more.

Meanwhile, White announced recently that he’ll release a new live album recorded during his Supply Chain Issues world tour.

Jello Biafra pays tribute to “unforgettable” Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro

Former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra has penned a eulogy for the band’s late drummer, D.H. Peligro, who passed away over the weekend.

The singer took to the website of his label, Alternative Tentacles, to share the tribute on Sunday night (October 30). In it, he described his longtime bandmate as “unforgettable” and “gifted”.

“Even behind the drum kit, he had presence,” Biafra wrote. “All animal instinct, he never played anything quite the same way twice. He was a born showman.”

He went on to recall his first encounter with Peligro, watching his band SSI play at defunct San Francisco venue the Deaf Club. Peligro, in Biafra’s eyes, “stole the show” with his performance that night. “A free spirited African American force of nature… with this shit eating grin, a bandana on his head, and two kick drums, singing his ass off,” Biafra recalled.

Peligro joined the Dead Kennedys in 1981, replacing Bruce “Ted” Slesinger. According to Biafra’s eulogy, he secured his position in the band on his call-back audition on account of being “the one who’d done his homework” on the band.

“[Dead Kennedys guitarist, East Bay] Ray said he’d learned ‘In-Sight’ from hearing it once in his car on the radio,” Biafra wrote. “Now we had more fire and feel than ever before, and the rest is history.”

Although Biafra left the Dead Kennedys in 1986, and maintains a contentious relationship with the band as a whole to this day, he remained friends with Peligro, and admired both his personal efforts in rehabilitation and his creative endeavours with his own band – also named Peligro.

“We laughed about a lot of stuff the other guys [in the band] didn’t,” Biafra said. “We had our own unique bond.”

Peligro passed away on Friday October 28, 2022, at the age of 63. Biafra’s tribute adds to many that have come in following the news of Peligro’s death. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who played with Peligro briefly in the band circa 1988, described the late drummer as his “brother”.

“You are the truest rocker, and a crucial part of RHCP history,” he wrote on Instagram.

Dave Lombardo, the former drummer of Slayer, wrote on Twitter that his drumming for the band was “inspired” by Peligro’s playing. “Sending my deepest sympathies to his family, bandmates and all those affected by this tragic, untimely loss,” he wrote.

Superchunk and The Mountain Goats drummer Jon Wurster described Peligro as “one of the greats”, while The Cure alum Lol Tolhurst wrote that Peligro was “a lovely man and an awesome drummer”.

Hear Turnstile’s ‘Holiday’ soundtracking a new Taco Bell commercial

Turnstile have furthered their push into the mainstream in a rather unexpected way, soundtracking a new Taco Bell commercial with their 2021 single ‘Holiday’.

READ MORE: Turnstile live at Brooklyn Mirage — 12 powerful photos from their rain-drenched set

The song’s synth-percussion intro and belting lead riff can be heard throughout the 30-second promo, which follows two young women dashing through a Taco Bell drive-thru in pursuit of nacho fries. A shortened version of the ad debuted earlier this month on TikTok, while the full clip made it to national television in the US, airing on NBC during last week’s Sunday Night Football.

Have a look at the latter version of the ad below:

‘Holiday’ was first released as part of the ‘Turnstile Love Connection’ EP, all four songs of which went on to feature on the band’s third studio album, ‘GLOW ON’. Other singles from the “communal” record included ‘Mystery’, ‘Alien Love Call’ (featuring Blood Orange), ‘Blackout’, ‘Fly Again’, ‘Underwater Boi’ and ‘New Heart Design’.

In addition to being praised by the likes of Quicksand‘s Walter Schreifels and Demi Lovato, the album earned a five-star review from NME, where Will Richards called it “an album that goes wherever it damn pleases, scorching a new path for others in their wake”.

Since releasing the album, Turnstile – who appeared on the cover of NME in July – have performed on shows like Late Night With Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, delivered an NPR Tiny Desk Concert and conducted an interview with Nardwuar, and appeared on the soundtrack for Halo Infinite.

The band have spent most of 2022 touring, leading NME to bill them as “the live band of the summer”. Among their biggest shows have been festival sets at Lollapalooza, All Points East and Roskilde (where they played table tennis with Post Malone), as well as headline shows in London and Brooklyn – plus one in California, where a fan allegedly shat themselves in the moshpit.

Back in August, Turnstile parted ways with forming guitarist Brady Ebert. In a statement, the band wrote: “We are deeply grateful for our time together. Our love for him continues and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Natalie Imbruglia discusses “shocking” media treatment in the late ’90s: “I was called difficult”

Natalie Imbruglia has opened up about her treatment by mainstream media in the late ’90s, describing it in a new interview as “shocking”.

READ MORE: Soundtrack Of My Life: Natalie Imbruglia

Speaking with The Forty Five to promote the 25th anniversary of her debut album ‘Left Of The Middle’, Imbruglia fielded a question pertaining to TFI Friday presenter Chris Evans. The radio and television personality once lambasted Imbruglia on air for the fact that her hit single ‘Torn’ was not written by her; the song was originally written and performed by American band Ednaswap in 1995. Imbruglia explained that he had done this because she turned him down when asking her out on a dinner date.

“I saw him in a pub and I went up to him and got in his face and was like, ‘You owe me an apology,’” she recalled. “He looked terrified and I was like, ‘Do you realise what you did?’ So he gave the most genuine, look-me-in-the-eye apology, and then got me on the show and tried to correct that.” The Australian-born singer went on to note that her treatment from Evans was symptomatic of a larger issue within the mainstream media.

“Recently, I had to look back through some old press articles,” said Imbruglia. “We can’t put all of this on Chris, this is an industry [where] certain things were a given – but it’s quite shocking now to look back at some of those old articles.

“I was made of pretty tough stuff, I just took it on the chin, but I think what you see in that ‘Torn’ video is someone taking ownership after being exploited in numerous situations and going, ‘I don’t need to show my body. I’m gonna draw a line in the sand.’ There were numerous occasions I was called difficult because of that, because I wouldn’t wear a dress. I wanted to cover up, and it didn’t go down well.”

Imbruglia went on to note in the interview that this period of her life also coincided with her “going through curiosity about [her] sexuality”.

“[It’s] more evident to me now when I look at myself back then,” she said.
That exploration was a period of time that I had to go through very privately – [which is] another thing that people can go through a lot more openly now.”

Imbruglia has spoken openly about her struggles with body image while promoting ‘Left Of The Middle”s silver jubilee. Three weeks ago, speaking with The Independent, the singer said she was “body dysmorphic and insecure” while making the video for ‘Torn’.

“My intention in wearing that [outfit] was so that you couldn’t see my silhouette, because I didn’t want anyone to see,” Imbruglia said. “But it ended up that there was a power in that, because it was like [seen as] androgyny cool.

“But it really came from a place of, ‘Thank God I don’t have to wear a dress!’”

Last month saw Imbruglia complete a UK tour, in which she performed nearly every song from ‘Left Of The Middle’. Prior to the October tour, Imbruglia made an on-stage appearance with Olivia Rodrigo in London to perform a duet of ‘Torn’.

Harry Styles has helped over 54,000 Americans to register for voting

Harry Styles has teamed up with non-profit organisation HeadCount to encourage his American fans to register for voting ahead of the country’s midterm elections.

Billboard reports that the singer’s campaign has seen over 54,000 people register as part of HeadCount’s ‘Good To Vote’ initiative, with nearly 30,000 registrations taking place within its first 24 hours. With this, Styles has broken HeadCount’s record for the most successful campaign headed up by a musician.

His campaign came as part of a sweepstakes, where every new voter that was registered via HeadCount would go into the draw to win tickets to the singer’s annual ‘Harryween’ concert – which took place last night (October 31) at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. It also follows his endorsement of Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke, which took place during his Austin show last month.

Styles’ work with HeadCount began back in September, with the organisation’s co-founder and executive director Andy Bernstein describing Styles’ support as having “tremendous impact”.

“This [support] is especially important for the midterms, which often receive less media attention than the presidential elections,” he said. “It helps us reach more potential voters, and ensure people get their voices heard.”

Other artists of note that have teamed up with HeadCount include Lizzo, Paramore, Noah Cyrus, Greta Van Fleet and the Dave Matthews Band. Each will have volunteers working at these artists’ upcoming shows, with booths set up to provide information for first-time voters and those looking to register. The organisation’s full itinerary can be viewed here.

Styles is currently performing in Los Angeles as part of his extensive world tour Love On Tour, in support of his third solo album ‘Harry’s House’ – whose opener, ‘Music From A Sushi Restaurant’, had its music video shared last week. He can also currently be seen in cinemas, starring in the films Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman.

Bruce Springsteen recalls playing guitar for Clarence Clemons in hospital as he died

Bruce Springsteen has opened up about the final moments of longtime E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons’ life in a new interview.

READ MORE: Clarence Clemons’ career in photos

Speaking with Howard Stern on The Howard Stern Show, Springsteen – on the show to promote his forthcoming covers album ‘Only The Strong Survive’ – recalled visiting Clemons in the hospital following the saxophonist suffering from a stroke. Despite two brain surgeries, Clemons’ medical issues proved to be too severe and he passed away on June 11, 2011 at the age of 69.

On the day he died, Springsteen had brought his guitar with him into Clemons’ room. “I had a feeling he could hear me, because he could squeeze your hand,” Springsteen said to Stern. “I took the hunch and brought the guitar, and strummed ‘Land of Hope and Dreams’.”

Clemons – also known as “The Big Man” – was a founding member of the E Street Band upon its formation in 1972. He played on nearly every Springsteen album up to 2012’s ‘Wrecking Ball’ – including ‘Born To Run’, on which he featured on the album cover alongside Springsteen himself. Following his passing, Clemons was survived in the E Street Band by his nephew Jake.

‘Only The Strong Survive’, Springsteen’s 21st studio album and second covers album, is set for release next Friday, November 11. It has been preceded by the release of three singles: ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)’ (originally by Frank Wilson), ‘Nightshift’ (originally by The Commodores) and ‘Don’t Play That Song’ (originally by Ben E. King).

The Boss also recently appeared on stage with The Killers at their Madison Square Garden show, joining them for ‘A Dustland Fairytale’ as well as renditions of his own hits ‘Badlands’ and ‘Born to Run’.
