BTS visit the White House to discuss anti-Asian hate with President Biden

BTS have today (May 31) taken part in a press conference at the White House.

Last week, it was announced that BTS would be speaking with President Joe Biden at the White House to address the issue of “Asian inclusion and representation” and to discuss their platform “as youth ambassadors who spread a message of hope and positivity across the world”.

All members of the group appeared at the press conference. RM spoke first at the conference and said it was “a great honour to be invited to the White House today to discuss the important issues of Anti-Asian hate crimes, Asian inclusion, and diversity.”

Jin followed, adding: “Today is the last day of AANHPI heritage month. We join the White House to stand with the AANHPI community and to celebrate,” before Jimin said: “We’re devastated by the recent surge of hate crimes including Asian American hate crimes, to put a stop [to] this and support the cause we’d like to take this opportunity to voice ourselves once again.”

J-Hope continued: “We are here today thanks to our ARMY, our fans worldwide, who are from different nationalities and cultures and use different languages. We are truly and always grateful,” while Jungkook said: “We still feel surprised that music created by South Korean artists reaches so many people around the world, transcending languages and cultural barriers. We believe music is always an amazing and wonderful unifier of all things.”

Towards the close, Suga, V and RM also spoke. Suga began: “It’s not wrong to be different, and equality begins when we open up and embrace all of our differences,” while V added: “Everyone has their own history. We hope today is one step forward to respecting and understanding each and everyone as a valuable person.”

RM concluded their speech, thanking the White House for what he described as an “important opportunity to speak about [these] important causes.”

The group are due to meet President Biden in the Oval Office later today.

Earlier today, US Senators Mazie Hirono and Chris Coons entered a playful Twitter feud over their love for BTS, ahead of the boyband’s meeting with President Joe Biden.

Last week, The Wall Street Journal’s Natalie Andrews tweeted that US Senator Mazie Hirono (D) from the state of Hawaii was “looking for her invite” to see the boyband at the White House on today (May 31).

“I’m the only US Senator who knows who BTS is,” Hirono reportedly said, per Andrews.
Another US Senator, Chris Coons (D) from Delaware, later responded to the tweet, writing “not even close #BTSARMY”, along with a picture of his desk, where he placed a standee of the boyband, along with a placard which reads “Senator Chris Coons” in Korean.

Senator Hirono later replied to Coons via her own Twitter account, challenging him to name his favourite member of BTS to prove himself as a “true fan” of the group. “If you’re a true fan, who’s your bias? And don’t ask your staff,” she wrote.

BTS previously appeared at the United Nations in New York last September where they performed single ‘Permission To Dance’ after being named the UN’s Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture. They also gave a speech at the assembly.

Carmelo Anthony Gifts Nike Air Bakin’ Inspired Air Jordan 36 To Baltimore AAU Team

Whether it’s the renaming of a major athletic sports facility at Syracuse, or giving to his Baltimore-based AAU squad, Carmelo Anthony has done all that’s required to set a true lasting legacy in the game. He’s a sure-fire first-ballot hall-of-famer as well as one of the top 75 NBA players of all-time, so Melo’s spot in hoops history is without contention.

This past weekend, Melo gifted his Baltimore AAU team with some sick new kicks – specifically an Air Jordan 36 PE inspired by the Nike Air Bakin‘ – a classic Nike Basketball shoe that Melo has fond memories of. The Air Bakin’, which originally released in 1997, was noted for its blazing hot red and yellow design and its infamous “AIR” logo that was met by protest from the Muslim community as the word “AIR” resembled “Allah”. Nike pulled pairs from the shelves and re-released them with a standard Nike Air logo.

This Air Jordan 36 PE shares some obvious resemblance to that classic, but with the added flame logos on the tongue with the Jumpman and Melo’s classic logo. Additionally, a Nike Swoosh logo appears at the ankle collar. Check out the photos below.

Seventeen’s Joshua Recalls How the Group Prepared to Record Their First English-Language Single ‘Darl+ing’

SEVENTEEN joined Apply Music 1’s The Chart Show with Brooke Reese on Tuesday (May 31), where the K-pop group discussed their freshly released fourth studio album Face The Sun, which features their first-ever English language single, “Darl+ing.”

“All of our members kind of had a hard time at first, pronouncing all the words because they were all in English,” Joshua explained of recording the song, adding that the group was “practicing all the time” and asking American-born group members Joshua and Vernon for advice on the language. “But in the end, we came out with a great song. So yeah, we’re really proud of them right now.”

On the concept behind Face the Sun‘s second track, “Hot,” Hoshi said it was all about symbolism. “It’s our determination to become the sun, which is the best,” he explained during the interview. “So like the sun that is really sizzling hot, there’s only one sun in the world. It’s our determination to become that shining, sizzling sun.”

Face the Sun is SEVENTEEN’s fourth studio album and first in almost three years. As one of the act’s main producers and leader of its vocal team, Woozi co-wrote all the tracks on Face the Sun, which follows 2019’s An Ode. The 13-piece pop band will support the new LP with a North American tour, beginning in August, part of the band’s first world tour in more than two years.

Listen to the full interview when it airs here at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT, and anytime on demand here.

Sprite Taps James Blake, Coi Leray & More For Global Music Program

Sprite is going global with their new music program, Sprite Limelight, and the initiative has rounded up a diverse collective of acts to execute the project, which is all about keeping your cool.

Today, Billboard announced the program, which sees Grammy-winning super-producer James Blake spearheading the project. For his role, Blake was tasked with providing a central hook in line with the brand’s new narrative, Heat Happens. The messaging encourages folks to turn to Sprite to help cool down in the face of everyday challenges. Blake took that philosophy and provided a simple hook for the campaign, to which three fearless artists, including rapper Coi Leray, Nigerian singer Omah Lay and Chinese singer Hua Chenyu, reimagined it through their own cultural lens and creative muses. They collaborated with Blake on each of their respective tracks to help shape their own individual visions, bringing a new meaning to teamwork in 2022.

“The limelight program is a chance for me to collaborate with artists from around the world in a process that’s new to me, to create a unique song with an empowering message that they can carry through each of their beautiful interpretations,” Blake said in a statement. “It’s been inspiring to see how each artist took this hook and beat and created something that would never have existed any other way.”

Leray was quick to admit that she’s excited to be part of the project that’s so complimentary to her mission statement, saying, “As an artist I’m constantly pushing myself to raise the bar when it comes to my creativity. Finding new ways to express myself is so much a part of who I am as an artist, that’s why I’m hyped to be partnering with Sprite on their Limelight program. Helping other dope musicians to not only get through the door, but flourish while shining a light on their individuality through music is something I’m happy to be a part of.”

As for Lay, the star understood what a huge opportunity it was to bring his Nigerian culture to the spotlight. “It means a lot to me to be part of the Sprite Limelight Program, an incredible opportunity for me to share my culture with the world,” he explained. “I feel blessed to stand among these other amazing artists to bring something refreshing and positive to the world; big Shout out to James Blake for masterminding the music, absolute Legend!”

Meanwhile, Chenyu admitted that the campaign fell in line with his artistic agenda and he’s hoping that his track offers audiences a brand-new experience of consuming music. ”It’s incredibly exciting to participate in this new experimental global music platform Sprite Limelight. I always try to push the boundaries and reach for higher when it comes to music,” he said, adding, “As one of the debut artists from across the world, representing Chinese talent, I hope this fresh music track can bring a unique experience to the audience.”

To find out how Leray, Lay and Chenyu worked through their visions, alongside Blake, you can head on over to both YouTube and Spotify. The result of their collaborations can be heard as individual tracks and featured in the form of documentary-style music films dubbed Heat Confessionals. The latter highlights how each of the acts have also conquered their own moments of heat through their creativity and music. Additionally, fans can expect individual playlists from each of the artists, where they offer their go-to listens for relaxing in the face of heat. It all kicks off with Leray’s drop on June 10. Lay and Chenyu’s drops will follow afterward.

“Sprite Limelight provides a unique opportunity for fans to experience new music, through one hook reimagined three different ways. It also offers a window into the way they make music, as well as their own personal experiences – connected to our core brand philosophy – of staying cool in those moments when life’s heat feels intense,” Shrenik Dasani, Sprite Global Brand Director, The Coca-Cola Company, shared in a statement. “In bringing very different artists from around the world together around one musical expression based on a shared life experience, it connects music fans across cultures and borders.”

Richard Yaffa, EVP, Global Brands, Universal Music Group, also chimed in on the venture, saying, “Our partnership with Sprite around Limelight demonstrates how UMGB continues to connect brands with some of the world’s most notable talent and produce culturally relevant content that resonates with consumers on a global level.”

Recruiting specific talent like Blake, Leray, Lay and Chenyu was important for the Sprite Limelight campaign, and it appears to be just the beginning for the initiative. “The collaborations fostered through Sprite Limelight have produced music that feels exciting and fresh. Working with the right talent has been critical – each of the artists needed to bring authenticity, strong individuality and openness to the process, as well as their talent, in order to make it work,” Joshua Burke, Senior Director, Global Music and Culture, The Coca-Cola Company, said. “It’s been an amazing journey to get to launch – and now we’re just excited to be able to introduce the music, as well as the broader program, to the wider world. And of course, to seeing where Sprite Limelight goes next…”

Listen to Working Men’s Club’s new song, ‘Ploys’

Working Men’s Club have today (May 31) shared a new single – check out ‘Ploys’ below.

READ MORE: Working Men’s Club: the Yorkshire group representing a frustrated Northern youth

The song is taken from their recently announced second album, ‘Fear Fear’, and follows on from the previously released tracks, ‘Widow‘ and ‘Circumference‘.

The band’s self-titled debut album came out in 2020, and they announced last September that its follow-up was finished.

‘Fear Fear’ will come out on July 15 via Heavenly, and frontman Syd Minsky-Sargeant discussed its creation and themes in a statement, saying: “The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on.

“I like the contrast of it being happy, uplifting music and really dark lyrics,” he added. “It’s not a minimal record, certainly compared to the first one. That’s because there’s been a lot more going on that needed to be said.”

Pre-order ‘Fear Fear’ here and watch the band’s ‘Ploys’ video below.

The track’s video was directed by Edwin Burdis and features Jamaican international weightlifter Chloe Whylie.

Talking about the video Edwin said: “When we heard the album I wanted to be involved immediately. It was a good opportunity to work with the artist/hybrid athlete Whylie and create a meeting of feminine meets masculine in an EDM-world.”

“We just set out to make the best-sounding album we could,” Minsky-Sargeant added of album ‘Fear Fear’, which was produced by Ross Orton, whose previous credits include Arctic Monkeys and M.I.A., at Orton’s studio in Sheffield.

“Me and Ross have worked tirelessly together on it this past year and I’m really proud of the outcome,” Minsky-Sargeant tweeted when announcing the album was finished last year.

Reviewing Working Men’s Club’s self-titled debut album, NME wrote: “Cycling through the conflicting emotions that come from living in a society that’s set itself on fire, ‘Working Men’s Club’ is an attention-demanding debut that couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Hope, despair, destruction and the desire for new beginnings, their chaotic energy makes perfect sense in these strange times.”
