Watch Chance The Rapper put a country-rock twist on Nelly’s ‘Hot In Herre’

Chance The Rapper has proved he has a bright future in country-rock, should he ever tire of rap, with a rollicking cover of Nelly’s 2002 hit ‘Hot In Herre’.

He performed the tune – replete with a twangy faux-Texan accent and acoustic backing from a proper live band – during an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s new musical game show, That’s My Jam.

Per a synopsis for the series, set to premiere Monday (January 3) on NBC, the hourlong show is inspired by segments Fallon has hosted on The Tonight Show, and will see “two teams of two celebrities competing for a charity of their choice in a series of music, dance, and trivia-based games and musical performances”.

Chance will play in the forthcoming premiere as part of a team rounded out by Josh Groban, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Alessia Cara. As an earlier preview revealed, their team will go up against the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, Blake Shelton and John Legend.

Take a look at Chance’s country-rock cover of ‘Hot In Herre’ below:

The cover rounds out a decently busy year for Chance, who kicked off his 2021 by teaming up with Vic Mensa and Wyclef Jean on the politically charged single ‘Shelter’ (which Chance and Mensa followed up in April with an acoustic redux). February saw him sue his former manager for $3million (£2.2million), while in March, he released the solo single ‘The Heart & The Tongue’.

In May, Chance released a concert film titled Magnificent Coloring World. It was recorded at a secret gig he put on in 2017, just after he’d won three Grammys for his 2016 record ‘Colouring Book’. The month after it came out, he appeared on the soundtrack for Space Jam: A New Legacy, linking up with John Legend and Symba for the track ‘See Me Fly’.

Another collaborative effort followed in September, with Chance, Smoko Ono, Joey Purp and Yxng Bane joining forces for the afrobeat-inspired ‘Winners’. Then, last month, his long-awaited team-up with R&B legend Dionne Warwick, ‘Nothing’s Impossible’, was finally released.

Lil Xan hits out at his ex-manager for enabling his drug addiction: “That was a time I almost died”

Lil Xan (aka Diego, full name Nicholas Diego Leanos) has spoken out against his former manager, Stat Quo, for allegedly enabling his drug addiction on tour.

Leanos made the claims in a livestream that he later shared on Instagram, labelling Quo a “terrible fucking human being” and alleging that Quo would regularly supply him with drugs while he was out touring with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Juice WRLD.

Noting in the stream that he’s now sober, and no longer wishes to be known as Lil Xan, Leanos said: “He knew all my plugs, so if I couldn’t perform because I was withdrawing back then – because yes, I used to be a drug addict – he would make calls, send $5,000 out here, just to ship the drugs to wherever we were at in the world.

“He’s going to act like he didn’t do that, like a fucking hypocrite, and I’m really feeling like I should take him to court, right? Because that was a time I almost died from the drugs. I was so skinny, unhealthy…”

Leanos goes on to say that his negative experiences with the music industry – in particular its general apathy towards artists dealing with substance dependency – have dissuaded him from releasing a follow-up to his sole studio album, 2018’s ‘Total Xanarchy’.

“The industry just sucks,” he says. “That’s a big reason why I haven’t dropped another album, is because after I got sober, it put such a bad taste in my mouth, like, to even want to make music, knowing how fucked the industry is. They just want to keep you alive long enough to make their fucking money, and if you die, even better for them. Because guess what? It’s easier to manage a dead artist than an alive one.”

Referencing the 2019 death of Juice WRLD – when at age 21, the late emo-rap pioneer died from a seizure after overdosing on oxycodone and codeine – Leanos continued: “Juice was one of the most talented fucking people, and now they have this whole catalogue of music that… And who knows if that’s even what Juice’s vision was.”

“They don’t care about us artists,” Leanos asserted, “and that’s why it’s hard, and almost traumatising, to make music at this point. And that’s why I’m trying to find my love again for it.”

Later in the stream, he says that once Quo “felt that [Leanos] was useless to him”, he moved the rapper out “an hour away” to Corona, California, “just not to deal with [him] anymore”. According to Leanos, “that’s when the drug problem got even worse, because I felt depressed that I was so far away from LA, and I just spiralled out of control”.

Leanos also alleges that Quo “took away” his car, and is now asking for $30,000 (£22,200) to pay it off.

Back in August, Leanos opened up about his ongoing mental health struggles in an interview with 60 Minutes. He spoke candidly about fighting bouts of “intense anxiety”, saying: “It’ll jump out at the weirdest points in life. I can do a show for thousands of people and I won’t have a drop of anxiety. But the minute I’m in a closed environment, it could just be the most random thing will just set me off.”

He went on to acknowledge that his Lil Xan moniker is “popularising” the anti-anxiety drug, adding: “I always made that known that I didn’t like that my name was popularising it. But it’s what worked for me.” The rapper had talked about being hospitalised after suffering “multiple seizures” in October 2020, after he said last summer that he was “sober from all prescription pills” and that sobriety made him feel “alive”.

Justin Bieber’s ‘Peaches’ has broken a record at the Grammy Awards, with 11 songwriters contributing to the Song Of The Year nominee.

With performers Bieber, Daniel Ceasar (Ashton Simmonds) and Giveon getting a songwriting credit alongside Louis Bell, Bernard Harvey, Felisha “Fury” King, Matthew Sean Leon, Luis Manuel Martinez Jr., Aaron Simmonds, Andrew Wotman and Keavan Yazdani, ‘Peaches’ has become the Song Of The Year nominee with the most songwriters ever involved.

Before that, Destiny’s Child’s 2000 hit ‘Say My Name’ held the record for most songwriters involved in Song Of The Year, with seven people credited.

The final round of voting for the 64th annual Grammy Awards is currently underway. Members of the Recording Academy have until January 3 to cast their ballots, with winners announced on January 31.

The leading nominees for the 2022 Grammys include Jon Batiste with 11 nominations, Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. with eight each, and Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo with seven.

Nominated in the Best New Artist category are the likes of Finneas, Japanese Breakfast, Glass Animals and Arlo ParksJay-Z also earned three nominations for the 2022 ceremony, setting a new Grammys record by surpassing Quincy Jones for the most nominations in the history of the awards with 83.

Trevor Noah has been announced as the host of the Grammy Awards for the second year in a row. Noah peppered his opening monologue at the 2021 Grammys with jokes about the Royal Family and Harry Styles.

The 2022 ceremony will take place at what will, by then, be the newly named Crypto.com Arena. It’s also been confirmed that the Recording Academy will be releasing NFTs to commemorate the next three years of the Grammys.

Billie Joe Armstrong backs out of Miley Cyrus’ NYE gig over COVID-19 concerns

Billie Joe Armstrong has cancelled his appearance at Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party – a livestreamed concert event set to be hosted by Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson tonight (December 31) – citing concerns over his recent exposure to COVID-19.

The Green Day frontman gave the unfortunate news in an update to his Instagram Story, writing: “After the holiday I found out I was exposed to COVID. I’ve tested negative but, I have made the decision not to travel to Miami for New Year’s Eve Party out of caution. Happy New Year and hope everyone stays safe!”

At the time of writing, NBC have not announced a replacement for Armstrong. Acts still slated to perform include Saweetie, Jack Harlow, Brandi Carlile, Anitta, 24kGoldn and Kitty Ca$h, while NBC have also promised “more surprises” to come. The show will be streamed live from Miami on NBC and Peacock, kicking off at 10:30pm ET and running for two hours.

Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party will replace Carson Daly’s long-running New Year’s Eve special, which he had hosted on NBC since 2004. Saturday Night Live helmer Lorne Michael is on board to executive produce the event.

It’s also been revealed that Cyrus and Davidson got matching tattoos following a previous appearance on Saturday Night Live. The pair recalled making their decision after they played singing and dancing babies for a sketch: “We said, ‘We babies,’ and for some reason, we looked at each other and were like, ‘That’s a great tattoo,’” explained Cyrus on The Tonight Show.

Were he able to appear at tonight’s gig, Armstrong would likely have shown off cuts from his 2020 solo album, ‘No Fun Mondays’. In a three-star review of the record, NME’s Andrew Trendell said the covers album “paints a pretty spot-on portrait of what it’s like to be alive in 2020, told through the hidden gems of [Armstrong’s] record collection and delivered with the heart and energy that you’ve always known him for”.

Armstrong has kept busy since the album’s release last November. Last December, he reunited Green Day’s “secret” side-project, The Network, for their ‘Money Money 2020 Part II: Told Ya So!’ album. March saw him mint an exclusive podcast for Audible’s Words + Music series, while in June (and then earlier this month), he teased that Green Day had new music on the horizon.

Green Day also embarked on their long-delayed Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer, and celebrated the 30th anniversary of their seminal second album, ‘Kerplunk’.
