Rick Gervais divides fans with joke about Sam Smith’s BRITs outfit: “You now belong to the Piers Morgans of the world”

Ricky Gervais has divided fans with his joke about Sam Smith‘s outfit at the BRIT Awards.

The ‘Unholy’ singer drew headlines at this year’s ceremony after stepping onto the red carpet in a black rubber suit with overinflated shoulders and legs.

Reacting to the costume on Twitter, Gervais pasted his own head on Sam’s body and jokingly suggested the singer was seeking attention.

Alongside the fake image of Gervais wearing the rubber costume, he sarcastically tweeted: “The Worst thing about being famous is the lack of privacy. I can’t even walk down the street without people looking and pointing.”

Although the majority of Gervais’ followers enjoyed the joke, some noted that Smith’s costume and style was not too dissimilar to some of the outfits worn by David Bowie and other iconic music stars.

One Twitter user replied: “I must say, much as this guy isn’t my cup of tea, it doesn’t bother me what he’s up to. In fact, I only see things about him from older men who seem increasingly upset about what younger generations are doing. This stuff happened in your generation too. You do know that, grandpa?”

To which Gervais quipped back: “Bit ageist.”

Another person tweeted: “I agree Bowie is far far superior to Sam Smith in terms of talent that their talent can’t be compared. That’s not to say the idea of shock factor can’t be. Even Jagger used to wear dresses etc.”

Taking greater issue with the joke, one Twitter user wrote: “Welcome to the heteronormative group of now officially old aged men, Ricky Gervais. You now belong to the Piers Morgans of the world in your glee of #SamSmith and his costume. Bowie would be proud.”

But it succeeds in spite of its clunkier moments because Swift’s melodies are frequently dazzling and her loved-up lyrics are ultimately quite touching.”

Swift followed up the record with her 2020 sister albums ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’, before releasing her 10th studio effort ‘Midnights’ last October.

Meanwhile, the star is set to head out on her 2023 North American ‘Eras Tour’ next month. Swift recently confirmed that rehearsals for the upcoming stadium concerts were underway.

Listen to Sinéad O’Connor’s new version of ‘Outlander’ theme

Sinéad O’Connor has shared a new version of ‘The Skye Boat Song’, the theme tune for sci-fi drama series Outlander – listen below.

READ MORE: What I learned about Sinéad O’Connor from making a documentary of her life

The Irish singer’s interpretation of the song will soundtrack the opening title sequence for the Starz show’s seventh season, which is due to premiere this summer. As Entertainment Weekly notes, the arrangement and artist of the theme changes with each season.

Matthew B Roberts, showrunner and executive producer of Outlander, said: “We are honoured to have Sinéad O’Connor performing ‘The Skye Boat Song’.

“Her rendition is, for me, a reminder of all that’s beautiful about Outlander. She is talented beyond measure. Hers is a voice of the ages — one which pierces heart and soul — and embodies the spirit of the show.”

The expanded,16-episode season seven will serve as the penultimate run of Outlander, with Starz recently confirming that season eight will be the series’ last.

Check out the new opening titles, featuring O’Connor’s version of ‘The Skye Boat Song’, above.

Last September saw the arrival of Nothing Compares, a Kathryn Ferguson-directed documentary about O’Connor’s rise to fame and career. The artist released a memoir titles Rememberings in 2021.

O’Connor’s 10th and most recent studio album, ‘I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss’, came out in 2014.

Last Summer, the singer cancelled all her scheduled live shows for “her own heath and well being” following the death of her son Shane in January 2022.
